Incidental bladder lipoma: a case report and review of the literature

An Atypical Case of Bladder Lipoma Presenting as Gross Hematuria: A Case Report

While conventional lipomas represent the most commonly seen benign mesenchymal tumor in adults, their occurrence in the bladder wall is exceptionally rare. This report details a rare case of a bladder lipoma, a benign tumor primarily composed of mature adipocytes, presenting as gross hematuria in a 68-year-old male. Despite the patient's previous history of left nephrectomy, no significant pathological findings were initially observed. The bladder lipoma was detected via cystoscopy as a polypoid mass on the posterior bladder wall and confirmed through transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TUR-BT). Histopathological analysis verified the mass as a bladder lipoma composed of mature adipocytes. Following a specific postoperative follow-up period, no recurrence of the tumor was observed, suggesting successful treatment. This case underscores the clinical significance of considering bladder lipoma in differential diagnoses of bladder tumors, especially in patients presenting with gross hematuria, given its exceptional rarity.

Bladder lipoma: Moroccan case report

Lipomas are encapsulated benign tumors typically found in the integument, central nervous system or gastrointestinal tract and represent the most common benign mesenchymal neoplasm in adults. Bladder lipoma is a rare tumor that has been reported in a handful of cases in medical literature. A literature review from PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane databases of bladder lipoma yielded less than 20 cases. We report a case of a 69 year-old Moroccan male patient with hematuria as a chief symptom. The diagnosis of bladder lipoma was suspected by flexible fibroscopy and assessed by transurethral resection. Macroscopic and histological examination revealed a lipomatous tumour with no sign of malignancy. There was no recurrence after one year of follow-up. Although bladder lipomas are rare entities, they must be considered in the differential diagnosis of bladder tumor. However, we should always keep in mind that any bladder tumor is malignant until proven otherwise.

Urinary bladder lipoma: an illustrative case

Urinary bladder lipomas are rare neoplasms. Therefore, very few of them have been reported in the literature. We present a case that illustrates the typical features that allow radiologists to diagnose this entity: a solid lesion that arises from the urinary bladder wall, showing an endophytic growth and homogeneous hypoattenuation. After its surgical resection, the diagnosis was confirmed by anatomo-pathological analysis. In the discussion we describe other neoplasms that should also be considered when a submucosal bladder neoplasm is detected on computed tomography or other imaging techniques.

A yellow-colored lipomatous lesion of the bladder: An unorthodox finding seen upon investigation for microscopic hematuria

Bladder lesions are almost always malignant where only 5% turn out to be benign. Among the benign lesions, bladder lipomas are rarely reported in the literature. Typically, they are incidentally discovered, after endoscopic resection, during an investigation for hematuria or other urinary tract symptoms. This submucosal lesion must be differentiated from its malignant counterparts, such as liposarcoma or pelvic lipomatosis both of which have higher chance of recurrence and invasion when inadequately resected. We hereby report another rare case of an incidentally discovered bladder wall lipoma in a patient presenting with microscopic hematuria.

Upper urinary tract lipoma: A case report

Upper urinary tract (UUT) benign tumours are rare. We present a case of UUT lipoma in a 41-year-old man with left flank pain. A computed tomographic urography scan revealed an irregular thickening of the left renal collecting system wall extending from the upper calices to the renal pelvis. The diagnosis of UUT was made and the patient underwent a nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision, as standard treatment. However, macroscopic and histological examination revealed a lipomatous tumour with no sign of malignancy. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of its kind of a UUT managed first with a minimally invasive approach.
