The Pigment World: Life's Origins as Photon-Dissipating Pigments

Many of the fundamental molecules of life share extraordinary pigment-like optical properties in the long-wavelength UV-C spectral region. These include strong photon absorption and rapid (sub-pico-second) dissipation of the induced electronic excitation energy into heat through peaked conical intersections. These properties have been attributed to a "natural selection" of molecules resistant to the dangerous UV-C light incident on Earth's surface during the Archean. In contrast, the "thermodynamic dissipation theory for the origin of life" argues that, far from being detrimental, UV-C light was, in fact, the thermodynamic potential driving the dissipative structuring of life at its origin. The optical properties were thus the thermodynamic "design goals" of microscopic dissipative structuring of organic UV-C pigments, today known as the "fundamental molecules of life", from common precursors under this light. This "UV-C Pigment World" evolved towards greater solar photon dissipation through more complex dissipative structuring pathways, eventually producing visible pigments to dissipate less energetic, but higher intensity, visible photons up to wavelengths of the "red edge". The propagation and dispersal of organic pigments, catalyzed by animals, and their coupling with abiotic dissipative processes, such as the water cycle, culminated in the apex photon dissipative structure, today's biosphere.

High sensitivity of Aeolus UV surface returns to surface reflectivity

Global ultraviolet (UV) surface reflectivity climatologies are all composed from daylight passive remote sensing observations of reflected UV light, generally integrated over a distribution of attainable reflection directions. We discovered the sensitivity of Aeolus lidar surface returns (LSR) to surface characteristics, providing the first evidence that active remote sensing can be effectively used for retrieving unidirectional UV surface reflectivity on global scales. LSR reproduces surface reflectivity monthly changes in Sahara, which are visible in the Lambertian Equivalent Reflectivity (LER) climatologies from TROPOMI and GOME-2. Very high correlations (r > 0.90) between gridded LSR and the LER climatologies are reported at global and regional scales for 36 different regions. Three clear land cover gradients are discerned from Aeolus LSR signal: (1) water/land, (2) vegetation/arid areas and (3) no snow/snow. The strongest LSR signal was retrieved over snow, while over vegetation, we found moderate negative agreement (r < - 0.60) between LSR and vegetation index proxy. Overall, the success of the first active remote sensing method for retrieving unidirectional UV surface reflectivity using Aeolus is demonstrated. Our approach can be effectively used to detect unresolved land and, especially, snow cover changes in high latitudes because, unlike passive instruments, Aeolus also provided nighttime observations.

Effect of Aerosol Vertical Distribution on the Modeling of Solar Radiation

Default aerosol extinction coefficient profiles are commonly used instead of measured profiles in radiative transfer modeling, increasing the uncertainties in the simulations. The present study aimed to determine the magnitude of these uncertainties and contribute towards the understanding of the complex interactions between aerosols and solar radiation. Default, artificial and measured profiles of the aerosol extinction coefficient were used to simulate the profiles of different radiometric quantities in the atmosphere for different surface, atmospheric, and aerosol properties and for four spectral bands: ultraviolet-B, ultraviolet-A, visible, and near-infrared. Case studies were performed over different areas in Europe and North Africa. Analysis of the results showed that under cloudless skies, changing the altitude of an artificial aerosol layer has minor impact on the levels of shortwave radiation at the top and bottom of the atmosphere, even for high aerosol loads. Differences of up to 30% were, however, detected for individual spectral bands. Using measured instead of default profiles for the simulations led to more significant differences in the atmosphere, which became very large during dust episodes (10–60% for actinic flux at altitudes between 1 and 2 km, and up to 15 K/day for heating rates depending on the site and solar elevation).

Multifractal Detrended Cross-Correlation Analysis of Global Methane and Temperature

Multifractal Detrended Cross-Correlation Analysis (MF-DCCA) was applied to time series of global methane concentrations and remotely-sensed temperature anomalies of the global lower and mid-troposphere, with the purpose of investigating the multifractal characteristics of their cross-correlated time series and examining their interaction in terms of nonlinear analysis. The findings revealed the multifractal nature of the cross-correlated time series and the existence of positive persistence. It was also found that the cross-correlation in the lower troposphere displayed more abundant multifractal characteristics when compared to the mid-troposphere. The source of multifractality in both cases was found to be mainly the dependence of long-range correlations on different fluctuation magnitudes. Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (MF-DFA) was also applied to the time series of global methane and global lower and mid-tropospheric temperature anomalies to separately study their multifractal properties. From the results, it was found that the cross-correlated time series exhibit similar multifractal characteristics to the component time series. This could be another sign of the dynamic interaction between the two climate variables.

Cooling and Energy-Saving Performance of Different Green Wall Design: A Simulation Study of a Block

To mitigate the urban heat island (UHI) and release the low carbon potential of green walls, we analyzed the cooling and energy-saving performance of different green wall designs. Envi-met was applied as the main simulation tool, and a pedestrian street named Yuhou Street was selected as the study object. Four designs of walls were summarized and simulated, demonstrating the living wall system (LWS). Super soil had superiority in cooling and energy saving. Outdoor air temperature, indoor air temperature, outside wall surface temperature, and inside wall surface temperature were analyzed. Apart from the outdoor air temperature, the other three temperatures were all significantly affected by the design of green walls. Finally, energy savings in building cavities were determined. The indoor energy saving ratio of the LWS based on super soil reached 19.92%, followed by the LWS based on boxes at 15.37%, and green facades wall at 6.29%. The indoor cooling powers on this typical day showed that the cooling power of the LWS based on super soil was 8267.32 W, followed by the LWS based on boxes at 6381.57 W, and green facades wall at 2610.08 W. The results revealed the difference in cooling and energy-saving performance of different green walls in this typical hot summer area.

Vertical Profile of Cloud Optical Parameters Derived from Airborne Measurements Above, Inside and Below Clouds

Past strategies for retrieving cloud optical properties from remote sensing assumed significant limits for desired parameters such as semi-infinite optical thickness, single scattering albedo equaling unity (non-absorbing scattering), absence of spectral dependence of the optical thickness, etc., and only one optical parameter could be retrieved (either optical thickness or single scattering albedo). Here, we demonstrate a new method based on asymptotic theory for thick atmospheres, and the presence of a diffusion domain within the clouds that does not put restrictions and makes it possible to get two or even three optical parameters (optical thickness, single scattering albedo and phase function asymmetry parameter) for every wavelength independently. We applied this method to measurements of angular distribution of solar radiation above, inside and below clouds, obtained with NASA's Cloud Absorption Radiometer (CAR) over two cases of marine stratocumulus clouds; first case, offshore of Namibia and the second case, offshore of California. The observational and retrieval errors are accounted for by regularization, which allows stable and smooth solutions. Results show good potential for parameterization of the shortwave radiative properties (reflection, transmission, radiative divergence and heating rate) of water clouds.
