Association of mean platelet volume and red blood cell distribution width with coronary collateral development in stable coronary artery disease. Abstract
Introduction The prognostic value of hematological indices in cardiovascular diseases and the association between these parameters and cardiovascular conditions have been established in the literature. Aim In this study, we aimed to investigate the relation of mean platelet volume (MPV), MPV to platelet ratio (MPR) and red cell distribution width (RDW) with degree of coronary collateral development (CCD) in stable coronary artery disease (CAD) subjects with established critical coronary artery stenosis. Material and methods A total of 306 patients with stable angina pectoris undergoing coronary arteriography were enrolled and divided on the basis of the development of CCD into two groups: a group with adequate CCD (n = 214) and a group with impaired CCD (n = 92). Routine complete blood count and biochemical parameters were measured before coronary arteriography. Results The MPV and MPR levels were significantly higher in the inadequate CCD group (10.5 ±1.8 fl vs. 8.7 ±1.9 fl, p < 0.001 and 0.06 ±0.08 vs. 0.05 ±0.07, p = 0.036). Patients with inadequate CCD had significantly higher RDW levels compared to patients with adequate CCD (15.5 ±1.7% vs. 15.0 ±1.9%, p = 0.01). MPV and RDW were significantly associated with Rentrop collateral grading (r = –0.523, p < 0.001 and r = –0.239, p < 0.001, respectively), whereas the association with MPR was not significant. An MPV value greater than 9.95 fl, determined with ROC curve analysis, had 71% sensitivity and 70% specificity in predicting inadequate CCD. An RDW greater than 14.3% has 71% sensitivity and 53% specificity in selecting patients with adequate CCD. Conclusions The present study suggests that MPV and MPR may be associated with the degree of collateral development in chronic stable CAD. However, the negative association of RDW with inadequate CCD, in combination with previous contradictory reports, raises a doubt about the possible value of RDW in stable CAD. Although these parameters may be affected by various conditions, a high MPV may lead clinicians to suspect possible inadequate collateral development in stable CAD patients.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the clinical value of the preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in the peripheral blood of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) patients. Clinical data obtained from 240 patients with CRC undergoing radical surgical resection in Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University (Jinan, Shandong, China) between January 2011 and April 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. Data were also collected from 110 patients with colon polyps and 48 healthy volunteers to serve as controls for comparative analysis. The clinicopathological characteristics of the patients in the low and high NLR and RDW groups were compared. The NLR and RDW values were compared prior to and following surgery. Kaplan-Meier analyses and Cox regression modeling were performed to predict overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). The NLR and RDW levels in the CRC patients were markedly higher than those in the colon polyp patients and the healthy controls. The optimum NLR and RDW cutoff points for CRC were 2.06 and 13.45%, respectively. Significant differences were detected in tumor location, diameter, degree of differentiation, tumor depth, carcinoembryonic antigen and carbohydrate antigen 199 when comparing the high and low NLR groups (P<0.05). A high RDW was significantly associated with distant metastasis and older age in CRC patients. No significant difference was detected in the NLR and RDW levels of CRC patients prior to and following surgery (P>0.05). CRC patients with an increased RDW had significantly worse OS and DFS rates, particularly those with metastatic CRC (P<0.05). Patients with a high NLR exhibited a reduced DFS time in CRC (P=0.053), although this difference was not significant, and a significantly worse DFS time in metastatic CRC (P=0.047). In conclusion, it is convenient to use preoperative NLR and RDW to predict prognosis following surgery for patients with CRC.

Abstract
Background Recent studies have demonstrated that red cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with cardiovascular (CV) events and mortality. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are often anemic and have high RDW levels. In this study, we investigated the effect of RDW on major composite CV outcomes among patients with CKD. Methods We retrospectively analyzed patients with CKD who were admitted to the department of cardiology of a tertiary hospital in 2011. The patients were divided into 2 groups: normal RDW (RDW < 14.5%) and elevated RDW (RDW ≥ 14.5%). Demographic characteristics, comorbidities, blood investigation results, prescriptions, and outcomes were analyzed after a 3-year follow-up period. Six adjustment levels were performed to evaluate the effect of RDW on outcomes. Results This study involved 282 patients with CKD: 213 in the elevated RDW group and 69 in the normal RDW group. The elevated RDW group had older patients, a lower proportion of male patients, lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) values, lower hemoglobin levels, lower serum albumin levels, and higher creatinine levels, compared with the normal RDW group. A linear trend was observed toward higher RDW in patients with deteriorating renal function. In the final adjusted model, RDW ≥ 14.5%, older age, and lower LVEF were associated with an increased risk of major composite CV outcomes. Conclusion RDW is a potentially useful cost-effective indicator of major composite CV outcomes in patients with CKD.

Abstract
Background: High-altitude headache (HAH) is a notably common disorder affecting the daily life of travelers ascending to high altitude. Hematological parameters are important clinical examinations for various diseases. Today, hematological characteristics of HAH remain unrevealed. Above all, we aimed to ascertain hematological characteristics and independent risk factors/predictors associated with HAH before and after exposure at 3,700 m. Methods: Forty five healthy men were enrolled in present study. Demographic and clinical data, physiological and hematological parameters were collected 3 days before the ascent and after acute exposure at 3,700 m. Results: HAH patients featured significantly lower white blood cell count (WBC), neutrophil count (NEU#) and percentage (NEU%), and higher percentage of lymphocyte (LYM%) at 3,700 m and significantly lower NEU#, reticulocyte count (RET#) and percentage (RET%) at sea level (all P < 0.05). HAH severity was significantly and negatively associated with WBC, NEU#, and NEU% at 3,700 m and RET# at sea level, whereas was positively associated with LYM% at 3,700 m (all P < 0.05). Moreover, we have found that RET# at sea level and NEU% at 3,700 m was an independent predictor and risk factor for HAH, respectively. Conclusion: The present study is the first to examine the hematological characteristics of HAH. Furthermore, lower RET# at sea level and lower NEU% at 3,700 m is a novel independent predictor and risk factor for HAH, respectively.

Abstract
Introduction Recently, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) has emerged as a significant inflammatory marker and a novel predictor of major adverse consequences in cardiovascular disease. Aim In this study, we aimed to explore the relationship between PLR and coronary collateral circulation (CCC) in patients with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Material and methods Clinical and laboratory data of 386 patients who underwent coronary angiography were evaluated retrospectively. The patients were classified into 2 groups as follows: poor CCC (group 1: Rentrop grades 0–1) and good CCC (group 2: Rentrop grades 2–3). The PLR was calculated from the complete blood count. Results The PLR values of the patients with poor CCC were significantly higher than those of patients with good CCC (153.9 ±26.6 vs. 129.8 ±23.5, p < 0.001). In the multiple logistic regression tests, PLR (odds ratio: 1.51, 95% confidence interval: 1.27–1.74; p < 0.001) and hs-CRP (odds ratio: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.03–2.11; p < 0.001) were found to be independent predictors of poor CCC. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis yielded a cutoff value of 140.5 for PLR to predict poor CCC with 79% sensitivity and 71% specificity, with the area under the ROC curve being 0.792 (95% CI: 0.721–0.864). Conclusions Our study revealed that high PLR is independently associated with poor coronary collateral circulation in patients with NSTEMI.

Abstract
Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of red blood cell volume variations (anisocytosis) and is reported as part of a standard complete blood count. In recent years, numerous studies have noted the importance of RDW as a predictor of poor clinical outcomes in the settings of various diseases, including coronary artery disease (CAD). In this paper, we discuss the prognostic value of RDW in CAD and describe the pathophysiological connection between RDW and acute coronary syndrome. In our opinion, the negative prognostic effects of elevated RDW levels may be attributed to the adverse effects of independent risk factors such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and vitamin D3 and iron deficiency on bone marrow function (erythropoiesis). Elevated RDW values may reflect the intensity of these phenomena and their unfavorable impacts on bone marrow erythropoiesis. Furthermore, decreased red blood cell deformability among patients with higher RDW values impairs blood flow through the microcirculation, resulting in the diminution of oxygen supply at the tissue level, particularly among patients suffering from myocardial infarction treated with urgent revascularization.
