Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus leads to debilitating complications that affect the quality of life of many Filipinos. Genetic variability contributes to 30% to 70% of T2DM risk. Determining genomic variants related to type 2 diabetes mellitus susceptibility can lead to early detection to prevent complications. However, interethnic variability in risk and genetic susceptibility exists. This study aimed to identify variants associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus among Filipinos using a case-control design frequency matched for age and sex. A comparison was made between 66 unrelated Filipino adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 121 without. Genotyping was done using a candidate gene approach on genetic variants of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications involving allelic association and genotypic association studies with correction for multiple testing. Nine (9) significant variants, mostly involved in glucose and energy metabolism, associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Filipinos were found. Notably, a CDKAL1 variant (rs7766070) confers the highest level of risk while rs7119 (HMG20A) and rs708272 (CETP) have high risk allele frequencies in this population at 0.77 and 0.66, respectively, making them potentially good markers for type 2 diabetes mellitus screening. The data generated can be valuable in developing genetic risk prediction models for type 2 diabetes mellitus to diagnose and prevent the condition among Filipinos.

Abstract
With more than 4.2 million people, Filipino Americans are the third largest Asian group in the US and the largest Southeast Asian group in the country. Despite relatively favorable average socioeconomic indicators compared to the general US population, Filipino Americans face a significant burden of traditional cardiovascular risk factors, particularly among men. Moreover, Filipino Americans have high rates of cardiovascular death, often occurring at a younger age compared to other minority groups and Non-Hispanic White adults. In view of these trends, in 2010 the American Heart Association designated Filipino Americans as a high cardiovascular risk group. Despite this, in 2023, Filipino Americans remain underrepresented in landmark cardiovascular cohort studies and are often over looked as a group at increased cardiovascular risk. In this updated narrative review, we summarize the current state of knowledge about the burden of cardiovascular risk factors and diseases experienced by the Filipino American population. Our aim is to inform enhanced clinical, population, and policy-level prevention interventions and boost research in this space.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to examine the associations of cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP) rs6499861 and rs12708980 with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) considering obesity and family history of diabetes (FHD) in Korean men and women. Methods We analyzed the association of CETP single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with HDL-C among individuals selected from a hospital (n=4 294) and the Bundang-gu area in Korea (n=2 304). Results We found that the CETP SNP rs6499861 was associated with a lower HDL-C level (effect per allele: −2.044 mg/dL, p<0.0001). Individuals with a rs6499861 CG/GG genotype had a 1.45-fold higher risk of an abnormal level of HDL-C (<40 mg/dL) than those with a CC genotype. This genotype-HDL-C association was stronger in women (odds ratio [OR], 1.99; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.39–2.85) compared with men (OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.10–1.61) and in women with a FHD (OR, 4.82; 95% CI, 1.86–12.5; p=0.0012) compared with women without a family history. Relative to individuals with a CC genotype and body mass index (BMI) <25.69 kg/m2, individuals with a CG/GG genotype and BMI ≥25.69 kg/m2 had an OR (95% CI) of 2.61 (1.97–3.47). Conclusions These findings indicate that CETP variants are linked to HDL-C level in Koreans and that this link is stronger in obese men and in women who have a FHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM This study aimed to explore the associations of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) gene TaqIB and D442G polymorphisms with essential hypertension (EH). MATERIALS AND METHODS In this case-control study, 883 hypertensive patients and 1044 normal controls were randomly selected from the Mongolian population of China. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct sequencing of PCR products were used to identify the genotypes. Haplotype analysis was performed by estimating the haplotype frequencies using the online SHEsis package. RESULTS The distribution frequency of the B2-G haplotype was significantly lower in the EH group than in the control group (0.7% vs. 1.9%, P = 0.001, OR = 0.359 [0.188-0.689]). Subjects with the B2B2 genotype showed significantly lower levels of total cholesterol (TC) (P < 0.05). When subgrouped by sex, male subjects with the B2B2 genotype showed significantly increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and decreased TC levels (P < 0.05), and those with the B2 allele showed significantly lower triglyceride levels as compared to the subjects with the B1B1 homozygote (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION TaqIB and D442G polymorphisms of the CETP gene did not independently affect the risk of developing EH in the Chinese Mongolian population, while the B2-G haplotype obviously decreased the susceptibility to EH. The B2 allele could alter the blood lipid level and reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
AIM We aimed at evaluation of the possible association of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) Taq1B polymorphism with the components of metabolic syndrome in a cohort of Egyptian patients compared to their healthy counterparts. PATIENTS AND METHODS Blood samples were collected for lipid profile, fasting glucose, insulin and routine biochemical tests. The Taq1B genotypes of CETP were determined using RFLP-PCR technique. RESULTS The patients group showed a significantly higher B1B1 genotype and lower B2B2 genotype compared to the controls group. Serum HDL-C level was significantly higher in all subjects with the B2B2 genotype compared to those with B1B1 genotype. In the patients group, age positively correlated with cholesterol level, triglycerides, BMI and waist circumference. CONCLUSION Egyptian patients affected with metabolic syndrome have a higher prevalence of B1B1 genotype that is associated with lower serum HDL-C levels.

Abstract
Both alcohol consumption and the polymorphism of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) TaqIB gene (rs708272) influence plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. However, their interactions on serum HDL-C levels is not well known. The present study was undertaken to detect the interactions between alcohol consumption and the rs708272 polymorphism on serum lipid levels in the Guangxi Hei Yi Zhuang population. Genotyping of the rs708272 in 342 nondrinkers and 416 drinkers aged 15-70 years was performed by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism. Interactions between rs708272 genotype and alcohol consumption was assessed using a cross-product term between genotypes and the aforementioned factor. Statistical significance was evaluated with analysis of co-variance. The frequency of B1 allele was 65.8% in nondrinkers and 64.7% in drinkers (P>.05), respectively. The frequencies of B1B1, B1B2, and B2B2 genotypes were 45.0%, 41.5%, and 13.5% in nondrinkers, and 41.3%, 46.6%, and 12.0% in drinkers (P>.05), respectively. The levels of HDL-C and apolipoprotein (Apo) AI in nondrinkers were higher in B2B2 genotype than in B1B1 genotype (P<.05 for each), whereas triglyceride (TG) levels in drinkers were higher in B1B1 genotype than in B1B2 genotype (P<.05). The levels of TG, HDL-C, Apo AI in B1B1 genotype, and HDL-C and Apo AI in B1B2 genotype were higher in drinkers than in nondrinkers (P<.05-.01), whereas the levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and Apo B in B2B2 genotype, and the levels of LDL-C in B1B1 genotype were lower in drinkers than in nondrinkers (P<.05-.01). The levels of HDL-C were positively correlated with female sex and genotype in nondrinkers (P<.001 for each), and were positively associated with age and alcohol consumption in drinkers (P<.005 and<.01, respectively). This study suggests that the B1 carriers benefited more from alcohol consumption than the B2 carriers in increasing serum HDL-C and Apo AI levels, and lowering LDL-C levels.
