Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study investigated the roles birthplace and acculturation play in sleep estimates among Hispanic/Latino population at the US-Mexico border. MEASURES Data were collected in 2016, from N = 100 adults of Mexican descent from the city of Nogales, AZ, at the US-Mexico border. Sleep was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index categorized as none, mild, moderate, and severe, and Multivariable Apnea Prediction Index (MAP) categorized as never, infrequently, and frequently. Acculturation was measured with the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican-Americans II (ARSMA-II). RESULTS The sample consisted of majority Mexican-born (66%, vs. born in the USA 38.2%). Being born in the USA was associated with 55 fewer minutes of nighttime sleep (p = .011), and 1.65 greater PSQI score (p = .031). Compared to no symptoms, being born in the USA was associated with greater likelihood of severe difficulty falling asleep (OR = 8.3, p = .030) and severe difficulty staying asleep (OR = 11.2, p = .050), as well as decreased likelihood of breathing pauses during sleep (OR = 0.18, P = .020). These relationships remained significant after Mexican acculturation was entered in these models. However, greater Anglo acculturation appears to mediate one fewer hour of sleep per night, poorer sleep quality, and reporting of severe difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. CONCLUSIONS Among individuals of Mexican descent, being born in the USA (vs Mexico) is associated with about 1 hour less sleep per night, worse sleep quality, more insomnia symptoms, and less mild sleep apnea symptoms. These relationships are influenced by acculturation, primarily the degree of Anglo rather than the degree of Mexican acculturation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the association between sleep quality and all-cause mortality in community-dwelling adults living in rural Ecuador. METHODS Individuals aged ≥40years enrolled in the prospective population-based Three Villages Study cohort were included. Sleep quality was assessed by means of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Study participants were evaluated at baseline and at every annual door-to-door survey until they remained enrolled in the study. Mixed models Poisson regression for repeated Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index determinations and multivariate Cox-proportional hazards models were fitted to estimate mortality risk according to sleep quality. RESULTS Analysis included 1494 individuals (mean age: 56.6 ± 12.5years; 56% women) followed for a median of 6.3 ± 3.3years. At baseline, 978 (65%) individuals had good sleep quality and 516 (35%) had poor sleep quality. The effects of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores changing over time on mortality was confounded by the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on both. One hundred ninety-five individuals (13%) died during the follow-up, resulting in a crude mortality rate of 1.58 per 100 person years (95% C.I.: 1.27-1.88) for individuals with good sleep quality, and 3.18 (95% C.I.: 2.53-3.82) for those with poor sleep quality at baseline. A multivariate Cox-proportional hazards model showed that individuals with poor sleep quality at baseline were 1.38 times (95% C.I.: 1.02-1.85) more likely to die compared to those with good sleep quality; in this model, increased age, poor physical activity, and high fasting glucose remained significant. CONCLUSIONS Poor sleep quality is associated with increased mortality risk among middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between alcohol consumption and incidence of sleep disorder. METHODS PubMed, EMBASE and OVID were searched systematically until March 2020 for cohort studies quantitatively investigating the effect of alcohol on incident sleep disorder. We conducted a random-effects meta-analysis to calculate the summary ORs (odds ratios) and 95 %CIs (confidence intervals) on the incidence of sleep disorder in relation to alcohol consumption. RESULTS The pooled analysis of eleven included cohort studies demonstrated that general drinking was significantly associated with incidence of sleep disorder (OR:1.37, 95 %CI:1.22,1.54,I² = 0.0 %) while heavy drinking was not (OR:1.22, 95 %CI:0.94,1.60, I² = 81.1 %). (general drinking (women <24 g/day; men <48 g/day; < 4 times/week), heavy drinking (women ≥24 g/day; men ≥48 g/day; ≥ 4times/week)). CONCLUSIONS Findings from the present systematic review and meta-analyses showed that there was no evidence that alcohol consumption diminished sleep problems, and some evidence that general drinking might increase the sleep problems, but further study is necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND and purpose: Inadequate sleep is highly prevalent among socioeconomically disadvantaged and racial/ethnic minority communities and is often related to maladaptive sleep behaviors and stress. There is scant research investigating the delivery of these interventions in underserved communities. The purpose of this study was to develop and test the feasibility and acceptability of a sleep education and yoga intervention for socioeconomically disadvantaged and racial/ethnic diverse adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS We present quantitative and qualitative data from a single-arm sleep education and yoga pilot study (n = 17) conducted in two affordable housing communities, and the multi-modal process we employed to refine the intervention for a future trial. RESULTS Participants were age 43.6 years on average (±19.3 years) and 88.2% were female. Nearly 56% identified as non-Hispanic Black and 19% as Hispanic/Latino. Results showed significant pre/post-intervention improvements in sleep duration (5.4 ± 1.2 h/night vs 6.9 ± 1.7 h/night; p < 0.01), sleep-related impairment (-8.15; p < 0.01), sleep disturbance (-5.95; p < 0.01), and sleep hygiene behaviors (-5.50; p < 0.01). CONCLUSION This study indicates intervention acceptability and improvements in sleep and sleep hygiene. Future randomized controlled trials are needed to assess efficacy.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES We examined the night-to-night associations of evening use of alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine with actigraphically estimated sleep duration, sleep efficiency, and wake after sleep onset (WASO) among a large cohort of African American adults. METHODS Participants in the Jackson Heart Sleep Study underwent wrist actigraphy for an average of 6.7 nights and completed concurrent daily sleep diary assessments to record any consumption of alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine within 4 hours of bedtime. Linear mixed-effect models were fit and adjusted for age, sex, educational attainment, body mass index, depression, anxiety, stress, and having work/school the next day. RESULTS Eligible participants (n = 785) were an average of 63.7 years (SD: 10.6), and were predominantly female (67.9%). There were 5164 days of concurrent actigraphy and sleep diary data. Evening alcohol use was associated with that night's lower sleep efficiency (-0.98% [95% CI: -1.67% to -0.29%], p = 0.005), but not with WASO or sleep duration. Evening nicotine use was associated with that night's lower sleep efficiency [1.74% (95% CI: -2.79 to -0.68), p = 0.001] and 6.09 minutes higher WASO ([95% CI: 0.82 to 11.35], p = 0.02), but was not associated with sleep duration. Evening caffeine use was not associated with any of the sleep parameters. CONCLUSION Nicotine and alcohol use within 4 hours of bedtime were associated with increased sleep fragmentation in the associated night, even after controlling for multiple potential confounders. These findings support the importance of sleep health recommendations that promote the restriction of evening alcohol and nicotine use to improve sleep continuity.

Abstract
The limitations of manual sleep scoring make computerized methods highly desirable. Scoring errors can arise from human rater uncertainty or inter-rater variability. Sleep scoring algorithms either come as supervised classifiers that need scored samples of each state to be trained, or as unsupervised classifiers that use heuristics or structural clues in unscored data to define states. We propose a quasi-supervised classifier that models observations in an unsupervised manner but mimics a human rater wherever training scores are available. EEG, EMG, and EOG features were extracted in 30s epochs from human-scored polysomnograms recorded from 42 healthy human subjects (18-79 years) and archived in an anonymized, publicly accessible database. Hypnograms were modified so that: 1. Some states are scored but not others; 2. Samples of all states are scored but not for transitional epochs; and 3. Two raters with 67% agreement are simulated. A framework for quasi-supervised classification was devised in which unsupervised statistical models-specifically Gaussian mixtures and hidden Markov models--are estimated from unlabeled training data, but the training samples are augmented with variables whose values depend on available scores. Classifiers were fitted to signal features incorporating partial scores, and used to predict scores for complete recordings. Performance was assessed using Cohen's Κ statistic. The quasi-supervised classifier performed significantly better than an unsupervised model and sometimes as well as a completely supervised model despite receiving only partial scores. The quasi-supervised algorithm addresses the need for classifiers that mimic scoring patterns of human raters while compensating for their limitations.
