Abstract
This study aimed to explore polymorphisms in the promoter region of the caprine BMPR1B (Bone morphogenetic protein receptor 1 beta) gene and its association with body measurement and litter size traits in Damani does. A total of 53 blood samples were collected to analyze the association between the BMPR1B gene polymorphism and 11 phenotypic traits in Damani female goats. The results revealed that three novel SNPs were identified in the promoter region of the caprine BMPR1B gene, including g.67 A > C (SNP1), g.170 G > A(SNP2), and g.501A > T (SNP3), among which the SNP1 and SNP2 were significantly (p < 0.05) associated with litter size and body measurement traits in Damani goats. In SNP1 the AC genotype could be used as a marker for litter size, and the CC genotype for body weight in Damani goats. In SNP2, the genotype GG was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with ear and head length. Therefore, we can conclude from the present study, that genetic variants AC and CC of the caprine BMPR1B gene could be used as genetic markers for economic traits through marker-assisted selection for the breed improvement program of the Damani goat.

Abstract
Identifying genetic markers of economically valuable traits has practical benefits for the meat goat industry. To better understand the genomic variations influencing body conformation traits, a genome-wide association study was performed on Tashi goats, an indigenous Chinese goat breed. A total of 155 Tashi goats were phenotyped for eight body conformation traits: body height, body length, chest depth, chest width, chest girth, rump width, rump height, and cannon bone circumference. Then, 100 Tashi goats were randomly selected for whole-genome sequencing and genotyped. We obtained 1676.4 Gb of raw data with an average sequencing depth of 6.2X. Clean reads were aligned to the ARS1.2 reference genome, and 11,257,923 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified. The structure analysis showed that these Tashi goats were almost not genetically related. The 109, 20, 52, 14, 62, 51, 70, and 7 SNPs were significantly associated with body height, body length, chest depth, chest width, chest girth, rump width, rump height, and cannon bone circumference. Within the ±500 kb region of significant SNPs, 183 genes were annotated. The most significantly enriched KEGG pathway was "olfactory transduction", and the most significantly enriched gene ontology (GO) terms were "cellular process", "cellular anatomical entity", and "molecular transducer activity". Interestingly, we found several SNPs on chromosomes 10 and 11 that have been identified multiple times for all eight body conformation traits located in two fragments (114 kb and 1.03 Mb). In chr.10:25988403-26102739, the six SNPs were tightly linked, the TACTAG genotype was the highest at 91.8%, and the FNTB (Farnesyltransferase, CAAX Box Beta) and CHURC1 (Churchill Domain Containing 1) genes were located. In chr.11:88216493-89250659, ten SNPs were identified with several dependent linkage disequilibrium (LD) blocks, and seven related genes were annotated, but no significant SNP was located in them. Our results provide valuable biological information for improving growth performance with practical applications for genomic selection in goats.

Abstract
The goats have been considered one of the noteworthy animals to provide food security and could promote socio-economic upliftment under challenging climatic scenarios in the coming decades, particularly in the tropics. Black Bengal goat (BBG) is one of the recognised native meat-type breeds of hot-humid tropics with distinguished characteristics, including superior-quality meat, excellent skin and high prolificacy. Smaller body mass, lower metabolic rate and efficient utilisation of high-fibre forages enable BBG to adapt to a wide range of harsh climates in the tropics. The BBG can maintain physiological homeostasis efficiently in terms of electrolyte profile, endocrine functions and haemato-biochemical traits in different life phases, including the gestation period, even in high-saline coastal areas of hot-humid tropics. Crossbreeding to improve its growth rate has been attempted, but the prolificacy has been decayed. This review is intended to attract global attention to the adaptive potentialities of Black Bengal goats in terms of growth and production, haemato-biochemical, endocrinological, salt tolerance and disease characteristics that could be an asset of climate-resilient agricultural farming.

Abstract
Calsyntenin-2 (CLSTN2) is involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, cell death, tumorigenesis, and follicular expression. Although CLSTN2 has been identified as a potential candidate gene for sheep prolificacy, no studies have been done on its effect on goat prolificacy. The purpose of this study was to identify mRNA expression and genetic variation within goat CLSTN2, and its association with prolificacy. Herein, we uncovered significant differences in mRNA levels of the CLSTN2 gene in different tissues in female goats (p < 0.01), including ovary tissue. Nine putative indels were designed to investigate their correlation to litter size, but only one 16-bp deletion was discovered in female Shaanbei white cashmere goats (n = 902). We discovered that a 16-bp deletion within the CLSTN2 gene was significantly correlated with first-born litter size (p = 0.0001). As shown by the chi-squared test, the genotypic II of single-lambs and multi-lambs was dramatically higher than with genotype ID (p = 0.005). Our findings suggest that indel within the CLSTN2 gene is a candidate gene affecting prolificacy in goats and may be used for Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) in goats.

Abstract
With the increasing popularity of genomic sequencing, breeders pay more attention to identifying the crucial molecular markers and quantitative trait loci for improving the body size and reproduction traits that could affect the production efficiency of pig-breeding enterprises. Nevertheless, for the Shaziling pig, a well-known indigenous breed in China, the relationship between phenotypes and their corresponding genetic architecture remains largely unknown. Herein, in the Shaziling population, a total of 190 samples were genotyped using the Geneseek Porcine 50K SNP Chip, obtaining 41857 SNPs for further analysis. For phenotypes, two body measurement traits and four reproduction traits in the first parity from the 190 Shaziling sows were measured and recorded, respectively. Subsequently, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) between the SNPs and the six phenotypes was performed. The correlation between body size and reproduction phenotypes was not statistically significant. A total of 31 SNPs were found to be associated with body length (BL), chest circumference (CC), number of healthy births (NHB), and number of stillborns (NSB). Gene annotation for those candidate SNPs identified 18 functional genes, such as GLP1R, NFYA, NANOG, COX7A2, BMPR1B, FOXP1, SLC29A1, CNTNAP4, and KIT, which exert important roles in skeletal morphogenesis, chondrogenesis, obesity, and embryonic and fetal development. These findings are helpful to better understand the genetic mechanism for body size and reproduction phenotypes, while the phenotype-associated SNPs could be used as the molecular markers for the pig breeding programs.

Abstract
Historically, female domestic goats carrying multiple kids are mostly unable to express sufficient nursing ability due to a limited number of functional teats. Therefore, the functional teat is an important component in prolific goat breeding, and plays a key role in the future health of their kids. With this motivation, we wanted to investigate the phenotypic features, litter size, histology of adult female mammary glands, and the gene expression profile of the fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2) gene in goats. To illustrate this, the initial dataset of the current study consists of an electronic questionnaire that includes 697 individuals (548 does and 149 bucks) of five endemic and three exotic goats from 2015 to 2020 in different geographic areas of Iran, from 59 Markhoz (MARG), 50 Azari (AZAR), 73 Busheri (BUSH), 69 Sarbisheh (SARB), 165 Mahabadi (MOHA) indigenous goats and also exotic breeds, including 183 Saanen (SANN), 39 Alpine (ALPN), and 59 Boer (BORE) goats. The results of this study confirmed that MOHA goats (4.16%), BORE (4.43%) and SANN goat breeds (5.75%) have larger litter sizes. Interestingly, the evidence gathering when SNTs occurred showed that both the BUSH and BORE goat breeds had the highest frequency of SNTs. Moreover, under the same physiological and lactation conditions, there was no statistically significant difference in histological features between the three compared does class consist of the two teats, SNTs, and four functional teats. In addition, the results of the gene expression profile significantly highlight the FGF-2 gene pattern in two teat groups compared to other SNT groups (P < 0.01). In summary, this scenario can be used to generate further research and facts on responsible candidate genes, the variations in teat numbers in goats, examining both the incidence of SNT and litter size.

Abstract
The present study aims to estimate geochemical arsenic toxicity in the domestic livestock and possible risk for human and environment caused by them. Daily dietary arsenic intake of an exposed adult cow or bull is nearly 4.56 times higher than control populace and about 3.65 times higher than exposed goats. Arsenic toxicity is well exhibited in all the biomarkers through different statistical interpretations. Arsenic bioconcentration is faster through water compared to paddy straw and mostly manifested in faeces and tail hair in cattle. Cow dung and tail hair are the most pronounced pathways of arsenic biotransformation into environment. A considerable amount of arsenic has been observed in animal proteins such as cow milk, boiled egg yolk, albumen, liver and meat from the exposed livestock. Cow milk arsenic is mostly accumulated in casein (83%) due to the presence of phosphoserine units. SAMOE-risk thermometer, calculated for the most regularly consumed foodstuffs in the area, shows the human health risk in a distinct order: drinking water > rice grain > cow milk > chicken > egg > mutton ranging from class 5 to 1. USEPA health risk assessment model reveals more risk in adults than in children, subsisting severe cancer risk from the foodstuffs where the edible animal proteins cannot be ignored. Therefore, the domestic livestock should be urgently treated with surface water, while provision of both arsenic-free drinking water and nutritional supplements is mandatory for the affected human population to overcome the severe arsenic crisis situation.

Abstract
Goat farming in Bangladesh is primarily centred on indigenous Black Bengal goat, a highly prolific breed. Searching for genetic markers associated with prolificacy in this breed is vital for the country's goat breeding industry. However, there are no reports on polymorphisms associated with the fertility of Bangladeshi Black Bengal goats. This study investigated two major fecundity genes-bone morphogenetic protein 15 (BMP15) and growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9) to detect any possible mutations in these two genes associated with litter size in Black Bengal goats. Blood samples were collected from 40 raised goats in Hathazari Government Goat Farm, Bangladesh. Genomic DNA was extracted; PCR amplification was performed; and sequencing of PCR products was performed to detect polymorphism loci in the target genes. Five SNPs viz. C735A, C743A, G754T, C781A and C808G were detected in exon 2 of BMP15 gene. A SNP (T1173A) was detected in GDF9 exon 2. Association results show that SNPs at the 735, 754 and 781 nucleotide positions of BMP15 exon 2 had a significant association with litter size in Black Bengal goat. The effect of parity was also highly significant (P < 0.001) on litter size. For the first time, this study explored SNP loci in fecundity genes in Bangladeshi prolific Black Bengal goats. Further studies with many genetically unrelated animals for assessing the association of these loci and others in the fecundity genes with litter size may be useful.

Abstract
Context
Two native goat breeds from Kerala, Malabari and Attappady Black, differ significantly in prolificacy (i.e. no. of kids born/kidding). Prolificacy is an important economic trait and the subject of genetic research showing that bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) genes have a significant effect. Double digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) is a highly efficient and low cost technology for high density discovery of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which could serve as predictive markers for animal breeding programs.
Aims
The study was aimed at discovering SNPs in BMP genes that affect prolificacy, using ddRADseq followed by validation of selected SNP.
Methods
Blood DNA samples of 10 highly prolific Malabari and 10 less prolific Attappady Black goats were pooled by group and subjected to ddRADseq. SNPs observed in BMP genes were investigated and compared between groups. A validation study was done for the c.614–32789C>T variant in 100 Malabari and 50 Attappady Black goats by using PCR-RFLP.
Key results
In total, 6333 variants were identified by ddRADseq. Three variants were identified in BMP genes, which included two intronic variants c.614–32789C>T and c.490+6793T>C, in genes BMP6 and BMP5 and a downstream gene variant near the BMPR1B gene. According to ddRADseq data, variants in BMP5 and BMP6 differed in allelic distribution between Malabari and Attappady Black goats. For c.490+6793T>C in BMP5, the CC genotype was predominant in the highly prolific Malabari whereas TC was present in the Attappady Black group. The variant c.614–32789C>T in BMP6 was genotyped as TC in Malabari and CC in Attappady Black goats by ddRADseq. This variant was predicted to have an effect on splicing, according to the tool SplicePort. On the basis of bioinformatics analysis and the role of BMP6 gene in follicular dynamics, the variant in BMP6 was selected for further validation studies. All three genotypes were identified by PCR-RFLP; the C allele was the rare allele in the population with an allele frequency of 0.36. Presence of both alleles C and T and the three genotypes CC, TC and TT in this larger population substantiated the robustness of ddRADseq technique.
Conclusions
The technique discovered high confidence SNPs, which could be used for further validation and association studies to develop markers for selection of animals and for genetic improvement of this complex trait.
Implications
Techniques such as ddRADseq provide a large number of SNPs, and investigation of those polymorphisms found across the genome will help to identify new loci affecting traits of interest. This, in turn, will aid in exploring genetically complex traits in a faster and cheaper manner.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The current study aims to describe the Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence across the US regions, and explore the predictive factors of MD adherence among US adults. DESIGN Cross-sectional secondary data analysis. MD adherence score (0-9) was calculated using the Block 98 FFQ. Hot spot analysis was conducted to describe the geospatial distribution of MD adherence across the US regions. Logistic regression explored predictors of MD adherence. SETTING Nationwide community-dwelling residency in the USA. PARTICIPANTS Adults aged ≥45 years (n 20 897) who participated in the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study and completed baseline assessment during January 2003 and October 2007. RESULTS The mean of MD adherence score was 4·36 (sd 1·70), and 46·5 % of the sample had high MD adherence (score 5-9). Higher MD adherence clusters were primarily located in the western and northeastern coastal areas of the USA, whereas lower MD adherence clusters were majorly observed in south and east-north-central regions. Being older, black, not a current smoker, having a college degree or above, an annual household income ≥ $US 75K, exercising ≥4 times/week and watching TV/video <4 h/d were each associated with higher odds of high MD adherence. CONCLUSIONS There were significant geospatial and population disparities in MD adherence across the US regions. Future studies are needed to explore the causes of MD adherence disparities and develop effective interventions for MD promotion in the USA.

Abstract
The effect of concentrate supplementation to crossbred goats on rangeland during the dry period on their reproductive performance was investigated. Goats were assigned into two groups: a concentrate supplemented (S; n = 91) group and an unsupplemented (UNS; n = 118) group. S goats received 350 g/day of concentrate per head, 30 days prior to breeding (flushing in winter) and 30 days during the last trimester of pregnancy. UNS goats presented a lower (P < 0.01) liveweight at the onset of the breeding period than did the S group (38.2 ± 3.7 vs. 44.4 ± 3.6 kg). Average daily gains during pregnancy were higher (P < 0.01) in the S group than UNS goats (15.5 ± 1.2 vs. - 0.5 ± 5.1 g/d). S goats had a higher (P < 0.01) kidding rate (87.1%) than the UNS goats (54.7%). Litter size for UNS and S goats was 1.39 and 2.00, respectively (P < 0.01). Serum triiodothyronine, tetraiodothyronine, and cortisol concentration at the end of the flushing period were not affected by concentrate supplementation. Serum glucose (88.7 ± 3.8 vs. 95.7 ± 5.3 mg/dL), total protein (6.9 ± 1.1 vs. 8.2 ± 1.2 mg/dL), and blood urea nitrogen (17.1 vs. 21.0 ± 4.3 mg/dL) concentrations were lower for UNS goats as compared with S goats. In conclusion, concentrate supplementation in crossbred goats on rangeland markedly improved body mass changes during gestation and the reproductive performance, which implies that malnutrition is a major barrier affecting fertility of goats and liveweight of kids in this rangeland.

Abstract
The Pelibuey sheep has adaptability to climatic variations, resistance to parasites, and good maternal ability, whereas some ewes present multiple births, which increases the litter size in farm sheep. The litter size in some wool sheep breeds is associated with the presence of mutations, mainly in the family of the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) genes. To explore genetic mechanisms underlying the variation in litter size, we conducted a genome-wide association study in two groups of Pelibuey sheep (multiparous sheep with two lambs per birth vs. uniparous sheep with a single lamb at birth) using the OvineSNP50 BeadChip. We identified a total of 57 putative SNPs markers (p < 3.0 × 10-3, Bonferroni correction). The candidate genes that may be associated with litter size in Pelibuey sheep are CLSTN2, MTMR2, DLG1, CGA, ABCG5, TRPM6, and HTR1E. Genomic regions were also identified that contain three quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for aseasonal reproduction (ASREP), milk yield (MY), and body weight (BW). These results allowed us to identify SNPs associated with genes that could be involved in the reproductive process related to prolificacy.

Abstract
Several reproductive factors may affect milk yield in goats. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of reproductive disorders, parity, and litter size, and their interactions on the 150-day standardized milk yield (SMY150) of low-producing dairy goats extensively raised. A total of 148,084 lactations between 1993 and 2015 were obtained from data of the Genpro pedigree records of the Transmontano ecotype of Serrana goat breed. The presence or absence of reproductive disorders (RD) from late (>half) pregnancy (abortions followed by lactation) or at kidding, number of fetuses (single vs. multiple), and parity (primiparous vs. multiparous) of the Transmontano ecotype of Serrana goat were used as fixed effects to fit a general linear model for a SMY150 output. A significant effect (p < 0.001) of all factors on SMY150, as well as three-way interactions, were observed. The SMY150 reduction subsequent to RD was 3.7% for multiparous and 9.6% for primiparous goats carrying singletons, and 14.1% for multiparous and 18.8% primiparous goats carrying multiple fetuses. It was concluded that a new lactation following abortion occurrence is viable for production purpose in low-producing dairy goats under pastoralism. Nevertheless, the impact of RD on SMY150 varied according to the number of fetuses and the parity of the Transmontano ecotype of Serrana goats. This information should be used in decision-making practices regarding reproductive and herd health management.

Abstract
Outbreaks of Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) viral disease in Black Bengal goats were investigated from the middle Indo-Gangetic Plains of India. Clinical profile of PPR-affected flocks was recorded from four different outbreak sites of the region. The PPR outbreak was diagnosed serologically using commercially available sandwich ELISA kit. Relatively, low mortality rate (mean 26.75%) for PPR outbreak was recorded due to the endemic status of the disease. To understand the role of oxidative stress in PPR virus pathogenesis, various oxidant and antioxidant parameters in goats infected with PPR were estimated and compared with the uninfected/healthy goats of the same flock. The measured high level of pro-oxidant malondialdehyde (MDA) obtained from lipid peroxidation along with lower levels of anti-oxidants viz. superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT) in PPR-affected Black Bengal goats suggests oxidative stress as one of the mechanism of pathogenesis of PPR virus. In addition, the correlation of oxidative stress due to PPR and the resulting reproductive disorders in the female goats were evaluated. The abortion in pregnant does observed during PPR outbreak was proportional to debility and oxidative stress manifested during PPR infection. The reproductive performance of recovered female goats in the period of 18 months of monitoring was significantly compromised in terms of kidding and twinning frequency. The mortality rate in kids born from PPR-recovered goats was significantly higher compared to those from health goats in the first 9 months post-recovery. From the present study, it may be concluded that together with the PPR virus, infection in goats and the resulting oxidative stress play a vital role for abortion and reduced post-reproductive performance in Black Bengal female goat.

Abstract
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRHR) gene is considered a candidate gene for litter size due to its critical role in regulating the activities of hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis which synthesizes and releases gonadotropins. This study was designed to identify mutations within the caprine GnRHR gene and investigate their association with litter size at various parities. Polymorphisms scanning and genotyping of GnRHR gene in West African Dwarf (WAD) goats (n = 226) revealed three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), one mutation (g.-29T > G) was detected within 5'UTR region while two others (g.48G > A and g.209T > G) were identified in exon 1. Mutation at g.209T > G locus resulted in amino acid change from Methionine to Arginine at position 70 on the polypeptide residue. Based on heterozygosity and polymorphism information content (PIC), WAD goat population diversity at the SNP loci was moderate. Strong linkage disequilibrium (LD) (r2 > 0.98) existed among the detected mutations resulting in three observed haplotypes, two (T-G-T and G-A-G) had cumulative frequency of > 97%. The mutation within 5'UTR region of GnRHR gene (g.-29T > G) is novel, being reported in goats for the first time. Association analysis revealed a significant (p < 0.05) association between allele G at g.-29T > G with higher mean litter size for homozygous (GG) mutant does compared with heterozygotes (GT) or homozygotes (TT), while the relationship between SNPs at the two loci detected in exon 1 and litter size was not significant.

Animal trypanosomosis (surra), caused by Trypanosoma evansi, is one of the most important diseases in livestock and wild animals in India. The disease is prevalent across all agro-climatic regions of India, and has a considerable impact on the country's livestock economy through direct and indirect impact on livestock productivity. In the present study, the economic losses on livestock productivity were assessed resulting from surra in India, considering all possible direct and indirect losses in major six livestock species viz., cattle, buffalo, goat, equine, camel and pig. The contemplative risk and retrospective analyses were performed using various official records and scientific literature complemented with expert data for evaluation of impact of surra on livestock productivity in India. Most of the information were derived using the secondary data published in scientific journals, and the official data reported by Basic Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Statistics (BAHS, 2014), the Government of India and other scientific reports. To address the variability and uncertainty, probability distributions for many input values were used in the present study and sensitivity statistical analyses were conducted using a simulation model. In the current analysis, all prices were assumed as deterministic. Based on present study, a total annual loss (direct and indirect) caused by surra was estimated to US $ 671.1 million or Indian Rupee (INR) 44,740 million (US $ 344-US $ 1209 million or INR 22951.88-80,752.35 million at 95% confidence interval), at present valuation. The mortality losses were estimated to 15.67% of the total loss. Among morbidity losses, the reduction in milk yield and reproductive losses components were 36.46% and 25.72% of total loss, respectively. Other parameters like reduction in growth (9.83%), reduction in draught power (7.95%) and additional opportunity cost (2.93%) also yielded considerable loss. The results highlighted the urgent need for early diagnosis and control strategies for surra in livestock species to reduce the productivity losses in the country's livestock sector.
