Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a severe mental illness that endangers human health. Depressed individuals are prone to sleep less and to the loss of appetite for food; their thinking and cognition processes, as well as mood, may even be affected. Danzhi Xiaoyao San (DXS), documented in the Internal Medicine Summary, has been used for hundreds of years in China and is widely applied traditionally to treat liver qi stagnation, liver and spleen blood deficiency, menstrual disorders, and spontaneous and night sweating. DXS can also clear heat and drain the liver. Presently, it is used frequently in the treatment of depression based on its ability to clear the liver and alleviate depression. PURPOSE To summarize clinical and preclinical studies on the antidepressant-like effects of DXS, understand the material basis and mechanisms of these effects, and offer new suggestions and methods for the clinical treatment of depression. METHODS "Danzhi Xiaoyao", "Danzhixiaoyao", "Xiaoyao", "depression" and active ingredients were entered as keywords in PubMed, Google Scholar, CNKI and WANFANG DATA databases in the search for material on DXS and its active ingredients. The PRISMA guidelines were followed in this review process. RESULTS Per clinical reports, DXS has a therapeutic effect on patients with depression but few side effects. DXS and its active ingredients allegedly produce their neuroprotective antidepressant-like effects by modulating monoamine neurotransmitter levels, inhibiting the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hyperfunction, reducing neuroinflammation and increasing neurotrophic factors. CONCLUSION Overall, DXS influences multiple potential mechanisms to exert its antidepressant-like effects thanks to its multicomponent character. Because depression is not caused by a single mechanism, probing the antidepressant-like effects of DXS could further help understand the pathogenesis of depression and discover new antidepressant drugs.

Chemical and Physical Methods to Analyze a Multicomponent Traditional Chinese Herbal Prescription Using LC-MS/MS, Electron Microscope, and Congo Red Staining. Abstract
This study develops several chemical and physical methods to evaluate the quality of a traditional Chinese formulation, Jia-Wei-Xiao-Yao-San. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) coupled with electrospray ionization was used to measure the herbal biomarkers of saikosaponin A, saikosaponin D, ferulic acid, and paeoniflorin from this herbal formula. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) and light microscopy photographs with Congo red staining were used to identify the cellulose fibers if raw herbal powder had been added to the herbal pharmaceutical product. Moreover, water solubility and crude fiber content examination were used to inspect for potential herbal additives to the herbal pharmaceutical products. The results demonstrate that the contents of the herbal ingredients of saikosaponin A, saikosaponin D, ferulic acid, and paeoniflorin were around 0.351 ± 0.017, 0.136 ± 0.010, 0.140 ± 0.005, and 2.281 ± 0.406 mg/g, respectively, for this herbal pharmaceutical product. The physical examination data demonstrate that the raw herbal powder had rough, irregular, lumpy, filamentous, and elongated shapes, as well as strong Congo red staining. In addition, water solubility and crude fiber content were not consistent in the herbal pharmaceutical products.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Chronic gastritis is a very common disease of the digestive tract. Although herbal preparation Chaihu-Shugan-San (CSS) has been widely used as an alternative treatment for chronic gastritis in East Asia, its effectiveness is not verified. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the effectiveness of CSS in treating various types of chronic gastritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective review of pertinent literature via Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure database, Wanfang Data, Vip Information and the Cochrane Library search using the keywords "Chaihushugan" or "Chaihu Shugan" or "Chai Hu Shu Gan" or "Chaihu Shu Gan". Twenty-one trials were identified including 2572 patients (1384 in CSS group and 1188 in chemotherapy group). Each trial was independently reviewed by two assessors. RESULTS The risk ratios of bile reflux gastritis, chronic superficial gastritis, chronic atrophic gastritis, and chronic erosive gastritis in the CSS-treated and chemotherapy groups were 1.30, 1.20, 1.24, and 1.48, respectively. CSS had more therapeutic effect in various types of chronic gastritis patients for improving clinical response compared with the chemotherapy group. Of the 21 trials administrating CSS to patients, no adverse event was reported. CONCLUSIONS CSS was more effective compared to chemotherapy in the treatment of chronic gastritis and no serious side-effects were identified. However, the evidence is insufficient because of the low methodological quality of the included trials. More full-scale, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials are recommended to further evaluate the therapeutic benefit of CSS.
