Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung transplantation (LuTx) is a challenge when right heart function fails. Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) is then necessary. METHODS We aimed to investigate whether preoperative transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) can predict MCS use and help to exclude the sickest patients. Between 2011 and 2018, 52 patients at our institution received LuTx and qualified for this study: 35 bilateral, 16 single, 1 lobar [1] and 1 retransplantation procedure. Of these, 22 were operated using MCS and 30 without MCS. The patients were aged between 18 and 65 years, and 23 were women. The indications were lung fibrosis for 18 patients, chronic obstructive lung disease for 16, cystic fibrosis for 15, primary pulmonary hypertension for 2 and bronchiectasis for 1. TTE was performed up to 30 days before treatment and 1 to 7 days after. RESULTS Patients undergoing MCS versus patients not undergoing MCS: preoperative right ventricular systolic pressure 56.5 (30) vs 37.8 (11.5) mm Hg (P = .03); tricuspid regurgitation pressure gradient 48.7 (27) vs 30.2 (10.8) mm Hg (P = .015); tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion 17.8 (4.3) vs 19.9 (2.8) mm Hg (P = .04); pulmonary artery diameter 27.5 (5.2) vs 23.9 (4.1) mm (P = .004); age 41.9 (14.1) vs 54.3 (11.8) years (P = .001). Patients who were Dead versus patients who were alive pulmonary valve acceleration time of 82.8 (24.1) vs 104.9 (27.2) ms (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.959, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.923-0.996 per ms, P = .02) and pulmonary artery diameter of 28.9 (5.8) vs 24.4 (4.1) mm HR = 1.225, 95% CI = 1.028-1.460 per 1 mm, P = .016 were predictors of death. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative TTE parameters: right ventricular systolic pressure, tricuspid regurgitation pressure gradient, tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, and pulmonary artery diameter predicted MCS use during LuTx. Certain values of valve acceleration time and pulmonary artery diameter could help discern LuTx qualification.

Sex, Age and Race Related Normal Values of Right Ventricular Diastolic Function Parameters: Data from the World Alliance of Societies of Echocardiography Study. Abstract
BACKGROUND Though the assessment of right ventricular (RV) diastolic function is feasible, it has garnered far less momentum for use compared to its left ventricular counterpart. The scarcity of data defining normative RV diastolic function and the fact that implications of RV diastolic dysfunction in different disease states on outcomes are less well known, both hinder integration into routine clinical assessment. We sought to establish normal values of RV diastolic parameters stratified by sex, age and race using data from the World Alliance of Societies of Echocardiography (WASE) Study. METHODS We analyzed a subset of 888 normal subjects from the WASE database, including measurements of tricuspid valve (TV) inflow E- and A-wave velocities, E-wave deceleration time, TV annular tissue Doppler e' and a' velocities. Additionally, right atrial (RA) maximal volume and RA peak reservoir strain were measured. Patients were grouped by age (<40, 41-65, >65 years), and stratified by sex and race. Differences were analyzed using unpaired t-tests. RESULTS When compared to men, women had significantly higher TV e', E-wave and A-wave velocities, though differences were modest. Increasing age was associated with stepwise lower TV E-wave, e' velocities and TV E/A, higher a' velocities and E/e' ratios. RA peak reservoir strain was also lower and RA ESV trended towards being smaller for older age groups. Asian subjects demonstrated significantly higher a' velocities, lower E-wave, smallest RA ESV and lowest RA peak strain values, compared to whites of both sexes. CONCLUSIONS This study provides normal values for parameters used in the assessment of RV diastolic function stratified by race, sex and age. Our results demonstrate significant differences in RV diastolic parameters between age groups, which manifest in both the individual parameters and composite ratios of TV inflow and annular velocities. While limited sex- and race-related differences were also noted, age appears to have the most significant impact on RV diastolic parameters. These findings may aid in refining the current normative values.

Abstract
Background Data on left ventricular (LV) function in patients with neurocardiogenic syncope (NS) is conflicting in adults and lacking in children. The aim of this study was to analyze LV myocardial performance in children with NS at rest and during head-up tilt-table (HUTT) testing. Methods This is the first study to combine HUTT and speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) in children with NS. 43 consecutive normotensive pediatric patients with NS (mean age 13.9 ± 2.6 years, 51% female) and 41 sex- and age-matched healthy controls were included in the study. The study groups consisted of 21 patients with a positive HUTT reaction (HUTT+) and 22 with a negative HUTT reaction (HUTT-). STE was used to analyze peak systolic LV myocardial strain and strain rate. Results Conventional echocardiographic parameters were similar in all analyzed groups. When compared to healthy controls, children with NS had depressed levels of circumferential strain rate (p = 0.032) and significantly depressed longitudinal strain rate (p < 0.001) at rest. Interestingly, during HUTT testing LV global strain and strain rate were similar in both groups. LV strain rate was lowest in HUTT+ followed by HUTT- and control subjects both at rest and during HUTT. Conclusions Resting LV longitudinal strain rate is attenuated in children with NS, especially in those with a positive HUTT response. This is further evidence that NS patients feature altered cardiac mechanics rendering them prone to vasovagal perturbations that can ultimately result in collapse. Abstract
There is a crescent interest on normal adult echocardiographic values and the introduction of new deformation imaging and 3D parameters pose the issue of normative data. A multitude of nomograms has been recently published, however data are often fragmentary, difficult to find, and their strengths/limitations have been never evaluated. AIMS (I) to provide a review of current echocardiographic nomograms; (II) to generate a tool for easy and fast access to these data. A literature search was conducted accessing the National Library of Medicine using the keywords: 2D/3D echocardiography, strain, left/right ventricle, atrial, mitral/tricuspid valve, aorta, reference values/nomograms/normal values. Adding the following keywords, the results were further refined: range/intervals, myocardial velocity, strain rate and speckle tracking. Forty one published studies were included. Our study reveals that for several of 2D/3D parameters sufficient normative data exist, however, a few limitations still persist. For some basic parameters (i.e., mitral/tricuspid/pulmonary valves, great vessels) and for 3D valves data are scarce. There is a lack of studies evaluating ethnic differences. Data have been generally expressed as mean values normalised for gender and age instead of computing models incorporating different variables (age/gender/body sizes) to calculate z scores. To summarize results a software (Echocardio-Normal Values) who automatically calculate range of normality for a broad range of echocardiographic measurements according to age/gender/weight/height, has been generated. We provide an up-to-date and critical review of strengths/limitation of current adult echocardiographic nomograms. Furthermore we generated a software for automatic, easy and fast access to multiple echocardiographic normative data.

Abstract
AIMS Reference values for Doppler parameters according to age and gender are recommended for the assessment of heart physiology, specifically for left ventricular (LV) diastolic function. In this study, we report normal reference ranges for Doppler parameters obtained in a large group of healthy volunteers. Echocardiographic data were acquired using state-of-the-art cardiac ultrasound equipment following Doppler acquisition and measurement protocols approved by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 449 (mean age: 45.8 ± 13.7 years) healthy volunteers (198 men and 251 women) were enrolled at the collaborating institutions of the Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography (NORRE) study. A comprehensive echocardiographic examination was obtained from all subjects following predefined protocols. The majority of the Doppler diastolic parameters (e', E/e') as well as right ventricle systolic s' wave velocity were similar in men and women. Left ventricle s' wave velocity was higher in men than in women. E wave and e' were higher in younger subjects and decreased progressively in the older ones. E/e' ratio increased with ageing. Septal e' <8 cm/s was present in 19.7% of the subjects in the 40-60 year group and in 55% of those in the ≥60 year group. However, the cut-off value of average E/e' or lateral E/e' remained <15 or 13, respectively, in the majority of patients. CONCLUSION The NORRE study provides the reference values for the most useful Doppler parameters in the evaluation of heart physiology. These data highlight the need of using age-specific reference values especially for the diagnosis of LV systolic and diastolic dysfunction and for the estimation of LV filling pressures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The right ventricle (RV) has an essential function in cardiovascular physiology and pathology. Currently, it is gaining an increasing interest given its recognized role in many cardiovascular conditions. However, echocardiographic assessment of the RV in daily practice is frequently based on qualitative estimation, and it has been regarded as a neglected chamber. OBJECTIVE We sought to review and discuss the appropriate approach and latest methods of assessment of the RV by echocardiography. METHODS A MEDLINE/Pubmed search was performed, and 55 relevant articles were selected; articles addressing right ventricular assessment by echocardiography, along with the latest recommendations, have been reviewed and discussed. RESULTS A RV diameter >42 mm at the base and >35 mm at the mid-cavitary level indicates right ventricular dilatation; a longitudinal myocardial velocity (S') <9.5 mm/s, a tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion <17 mm, and a fractional area change <35% are indices of right ventricular systolic dysfunction. A right ventricular ejection fraction of >45% and an absolute value of global longitudinal strain of >21% reflect normal systolic function. The significance of dp/dt, the right myocardial performance index and isovolumic myocardial acceleration, is also discussed along with the parameters of right ventricular diastolic function. The use of novel echocardiographic approaches, such as three-dimensional echo and speckle tracking imaging, allows practitioners to overcome the challenges encountered with conventional echocardiography. CONCLUSION Accurate assessment of the RV by echocardiography yields early detection of cardiac diseases, enhances risk stratification, and allows timely initiation of appropriate therapy.

Abstract
The human heart cannot regenerate after injury, whereas the adult zebrafish can fully regenerate its heart even after 20% of the ventricle is amputated. Many studies have begun to reveal the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying this regenerative process, which have exciting implications for human cardiac diseases. However, the dynamic functions of the zebrafish heart during regeneration are not yet understood. This study established a high-resolution echocardiography for tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) of the zebrafish heart to explore the cardiac functions during different regeneration phases. Experiments were performed on AB-line adult zebrafish (n=40) in which 15% of the ventricle was surgically removed. An 80-MHz ultrasound TDI based on color M-mode imaging technology was employed. The cardiac flow velocities and patterns from both the ventricular chamber and myocardium were measured at different regeneration phases relative to the day of amputation. The peak velocities of early diastolic inflow, early diastolic myocardial motion, late diastolic myocardial motion, early diastolic deceleration slope, and heart rate were increased at 3 days after the myocardium amputation, but these parameters gradually returned to close to their baseline values for the normal heart at 7 days after amputation. The peak velocities of late diastolic inflow, ventricular systolic outflow, and systolic myocardial motion did not significantly differ during the heart regeneration.
