[Physics properties of non-helical scan using 320-row multi detector computed tomography]

Recently, clinical applications utilizing 320-row multi detector computed tomography (320MDCT) have increased, and the physical image properties of 320MDCT have been more concerned. We evaluated the spatial resolution in scan plane and z-direction, image noise and low-contrast sensitivity of non-helical mode (320NH), 640 slices mode by a double slice reconstruction technology (640DS), and 64-row helical mode (64HE) by using a 320MDCT. The spatial resolution in z-direction was evaluated by the section sensitivity profile (SSP) measurement with the micro coin phantom and the contrast transfer ratio (CTR) with the 0.5-mm comb phantom. The in-plane spatial resolution of 320NH was uniform over all the slice positions. The spatial resolution in z-direction decreased from the cathode side toward the anode side. The image noise of the anode side was higher than that of the cathode side. The contrast to noise ratio as index of the low contrast sensitivity was uniform over all the slice position. The CTR of 320NH fluctuated in the z-position, and the fluctuation was improved by 640DS except for the center of rotation.

[Potential of helical scan technique in acute cerebral infarction assessment]

The high convenience of data collection by helical scanning, such as making multi planner reformat (MPR) and shortening scan time, means that the technique is widely used to diagnose various body parts. However, non-helical scanning is still a main current for plane brain computed tomography. The possibility of diagnosing acute cerebral infarction by helical scanning MPR was examined. It was found that image degradation in helical scanning had little influence on the physical evaluation of the characteristics of modulation transfer function and the noise power spectrum, etc. In the evaluation of the ischemic change occurring at the early stage made by examination of clinical images, the result was almost equal to that obtained by non-helical scanning, as the reported sensitivity was 52% and the specificity was 95%. This suggested that brain helical scanning MPR might be applied clinically. However, a disadvantage was confirmed as helical scanning had a higher exposure dose than non-helical scanning at the start and end of scanning. The results of this study indicated that helical scanning demonstrates sufficient convenience for the assessment of acute cerebral infarction at the basal nucleus level.

[Investigation of Region of Interest (ROI) for measurement of slice thickness in Computed Tomography (CT)]

We evaluated an appropriate region of interest (ROI) size for the measurement of full width at half maximum (FWHM) in the bead method (0.1 mm and 0.5 mm diameter; lead) and the microdisk method (0.05 mm thickness and 1.0 mm diameter; tungsten) using multislice computed tomography (CT). The FWHM of preset slice thicknesses 0.625 mm, 1.25 mm, 5.0 mm and 7.5 mm were measured by varying helical pitch, location of measurement [center and off-center of scan field of view (SFOV)] and ROI size, and they were compared with the tolerance stated in the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). It was conlcuded that the appropriate ROI size was influenced by preset slice thickness in this study. At the center of SFOV, measurements of FWHM were enabled within the tolerance of the JIS with small variations in all preset slice thicknesses if the ROI sizes were set between 0.4 times and equal to the size of the bead or microdisk indicating the maximum CT value in the series of CT images. At the off-center of SFOV, the tendency of increasing FWHM was confirmed, but it was shown that variations of the off-center in thicker slice thickness were larger regardless of helical pitch when the orbital synchronized helical scan technique was not used.
