Abstract
Physical frailty and hypertension are both highly prevalent among older adults. Furthermore, physical frailty may impact the risk-benefit ratio of pharmacological hypertension treatment. Thus, it may be prudent to focus on physical activity and exercise interventions to achieve better patient outcomes that addresses both conditions. This systematic review aimed to investigate the effects of exercise interventions on physical frailty components and hypertension-related outcomes in older adults with hypertension. PubMed/Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Cinahl and PEDro were searched for exercise trials in older adults with hypertension, measuring physical frailty or physical frailty components. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis protocol (PRISMA-P) and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale were used for internal validity. The searches retrieved 4965 titles without duplicates. Ninety-four potential full texts were evaluated, and 30 original studies were included in the review. Mean methodological quality of the included studies was 5.7 out of 10. Only one study measured frailty (using a cumulative deficit model) in older adults with hypertension. Different types of exercise training demonstrated improvements in components of physical frailty. This systematic review shows that there is no evidence whether exercise ameliorates the effects of physical frailty and hypertension and there is a need for more data to be generated.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aims to investigate the combining effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) compared to MICT alone on physical fitness, academic performance, and anxiety levels among adolescents in a school setting. METHODS Sixty male adolescents were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (HIIT + MICT) or a control group (MICT only) for 12 weeks. Physical fitness was assessed using lung capacity, a 50-meter sprint, a standing long jump, and a 1000-meter run. Anxiety levels were measured using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, and cognitive performance through academic evaluations. Statistical analyses included Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney U, unpaired t-tests, chi-square, and McNemar tests. RESULTS After 12 weeks, the experimental group showed a significant increase in lung capacity (10.30 ml/kg) compared to the control group (3.18 ml/kg, P = 0.03). Sprint and run completion times were also significantly faster in the experimental group (P < 0.01 and P = 0.02), with greater improvements in the long jump (P = 0.01). Academic performance and anxiety levels improved significantly in the experimental group (P = 0.02 and P < 0.01), while the control group exhibited no significant changes. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that combining HIIT with MICT results in greater improvements in adolescent cardiorespiratory fitness, anaerobic performance, academic outcomes, and anxiety levels compared to MICT alone. These findings support the incorporation of HIIT alongside traditional MICT in adolescents. TRIAL REGISTRATION The study was retrospectively registered in the clinical trials registry on 26/04/2023 (ChiCTR2300070895).

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has gained recognition for its positive impacts on cardiovascular (CV) health, metabolic outcomes, mental health, and quality of life (QoL). This narrative review aims to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy of HIIT in enhancing CV health and preventing CV disease (CVD). METHODS A comprehensive search of PubMed identified 257 articles, of which 39 studies met predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria for quality assessment. Key metrics evaluated included blood pressure, vascular function, lipid profiles, body composition, and CRF. RESULTS HIIT significantly improved vascular function, evidenced by reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and enhanced flow-mediated dilation. Improvements in cardiac function were observed through increased cardiac output and heart rate variability. Additionally, HIIT positively influenced lipid profiles, decreasing low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides while increasing high-density lipoprotein. Significant reductions in body fat and improvements in VO2peak were noted, contributing to enhanced CRF. HIIT also positively impacted mental health and QoL, reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms. Importantly, HIIT was safely and effectively applied to high-risk populations-individuals with obesity, metabolic syndrome, CVD, and cancer survivors-with a low incidence of adverse effects. CONCLUSIONS This review highlights HIIT as an effective and safe exercise modality for improving CV health, metabolic indicators, mental health, and QoL. Future research should focus on developing tailored HIIT protocols to optimize adherence and efficacy across diverse populations, considering variations in age, sex, health status, and underlying medical conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) have been increasingly adopted for localized prostate cancer (PCa) under active surveillance (AS). However, it is unclear which training modality is the most favorable in terms of cardiorespiratory fitness and biochemical progression. METHODS We searched PubMed, Cochrane and Embase for relevant RCTs. PRISMA guideline was adopted to ensure optimal conduct of this study. Serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) and peak VO2 were selected as primary outcomes and PSA doubling time (PSADT) and testosterone were selected as secondary outcomes. Only articles written in English were included. Cochrane risk-of-bias tool was used for risk of bias evaluation. RESULTS A total of 501 studies were selected. Six RCTs with 222 patients were included for data extraction and analysis. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) group demonstrated significantly lower PSA compared with usual care (UC) (MD = -1.4; 95%CI = -2.77 to -0.03) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) group (MD = -1.67; 95%CI = -3.30 to -0.05). Both HIIT and MICT showed significantly improved peak VO2 compared with UC. No significant difference was observed in PSADT and testosterone among different training modalities and UC. Regarding peak VO2, MICT had the highest surface under cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) scores (98.1%). For serum PSA, HIIT had the highest probability (97.8%) to be the training with the highest efficacy. The potential source of bias mainly came from poorly performed allocation concealment and blinding strategies. CONCLUSIONS The present study indicated that HIIT and MICT showed considerable cardiorespiratory benefits for localized PCa. HIIT was preferred over MICT in biochemical progression control in terms of decreasing serum PSA levels. However, MICT was favored over HIIT regarding cardiorespiratory benefits. The findings of this study may facilitate future lifestyle intervention, particularly in the form of physical training, for individuals diagnosed with localized PCa under AS.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cancer is amongst the leading causes of death worldwide. A total of 19.3 million new cases were diagnosed in 2020. Cardiovascular impairment is the second leading cause of death in patients undergoing cancer treatment. By measuring the maximum rate of oxygen consumption (VO2max) in cancer patients, it is possible to estimate their cardiorespiratory health. This study aims to show how participants' VO2max increases with a therapeutic physical exercise programme. METHODS Four databases were used for the literature search. Twenty-eight studies were analysed using the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of these studies was analysed with the PEDRO scale. The structural characteristics of the articles and the study variable (VO2max) were studied. RESULTS The VO2max of the 2558 patients studied presents some variations by gender, intervention and moment of measurement. For male-associated cancer, the increased VO2max ranged between 1.5 and 4.2% after the intervention. The increase in the maximum VO2max in female-associated cancer was between 0.3 and 53%. Different types of cancer for both genders presented an oscillation between 0.5 and 3.47%. CONCLUSIONS Therapeutic physical exercise is an efficient intervention to improve the VO2max in oncology patients. The results show that a therapeutic physical exercise intervention lasting 12 weeks, 3 days per week with a moderate-vigorous intensity, increases the VO2max in oncology patients.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of different exercise interventions on cardiopulmonary function in male tobacco-dependent college students. Forty-five male tobacco-dependent college students were recruited as the tobacco-dependent (TB) group, and 45 non-tobacco-dependent college students were recruited as the control group. The TB group was randomly assigned to three subgroups: non-exercise (NE), high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT). The HIIT and MICT groups underwent a 10-week exercise training, while the NE group received no intervention. Cardiac parameters, including maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), heart rate max (HRmax), and heart rate reserve (HRR), and pulmonary indicators, including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), vital capacity (VC), maximum ventilation volume (MVV), and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were investigated. The results showed that the TB group had significantly lower cardiopulmonary function than the control group. The degree of tobacco dependence was negatively correlated with VO2max, FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and MVV. Furthermore, both HIIT and MICT training improved cardiopulmonary function. HIIT training exhibited superior efficacy compared to MICT in improving HRmax, HRR, FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and PEF. In conclusion, tobacco dependence adversely affects cardiopulmonary function in male college students. Both HIIT and MICT effectively improved cardiopulmonary function, with HIIT showing superior efficacy.

Abstract
Physical exercise studies are generally underrepresented in young adulthood. Seventeen subjects were randomized into an intervention group (24.2 ± 3.9 years; 3 trainings/week) and 10 subjects into a passive control group (23.7 ± 4.2 years), over a duration of 6 months. Every two months, performance diagnostics, computerized spatial memory tests, and 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging were conducted. Here we find that the intervention group, compared to controls, showed increased cardiorespiratory fitness, spatial memory performance and subregional hippocampal volumes over time. Time-by-condition interactions occurred in right cornu ammonis 4 body and (trend only) dentate gyrus, left hippocampal tail and left subiculum. Increases in spatial memory performance correlated with hippocampal body volume changes and, subregionally, with left subicular volume changes. In conclusion, findings support earlier reports of exercise-induced subregional hippocampal volume changes. Such exercise-related plasticity may not only be of interest for young adults with clinical disorders of hippocampal function, but also for sedentary normal cohorts.

Abstract
Aerobic fitness is a critical aspect of overall health and well-being, essential for maintaining a high quality of life. Unfortunately, sedentary behavior has been on the rise among young adults, and this has had a negative impact on their aerobic fitness levels. Therefore, it is crucial to identify enjoyable physical exercise training programs that can play a pivotal role in improving aerobic fitness. The objective of this study was to systematically review the experimental studies concerning the impact of small-sided games (SSGs) training programs, implemented across various team sports, on the enhancement of aerobic fitness in a youth sedentary population. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and the Web of Science on August 01, 2023. Our eligibility criteria focused on studies involving sedentary youth populations (aged <18 years) as the target population. These studies needed to incorporate interventions based on SSGs as the intervention of interest, comparing them to passive or control groups as the comparator. The primary outcomes of interest were related to maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), assessed either directly or indirectly, or the results of field-based cardiorespiratory tests. We specifically considered two- or multi-arm randomized controlled studies as the study design of interest. Out of the initial pool of 1980 studies, we reviewed 38 full-text articles, ultimately selecting and analyzing 13 studies for inclusion in our review. Among the studies included, a total of 1281 participants were enrolled in SSG-based interventions, while 744 participants acted as part of the control groups. Regarding the impact on VO2max, the six studies that investigated this outcome showed varying improvements, ranging from 2.2 % to 31.3 % when participants were exposed to SSGs. In terms of the outcome related to endurance performance in field-based tests, the eight studies that examined this aspect found that participants exposed to SSGs showed improvements ranging from 0.1 % to 79.8 %. In conclusion, this systematic review suggests that SSG-based interventions conducted among sedentary youth populations can play a positive role in improving their aerobic fitness. This improvement in aerobic fitness can have potential positive impacts on their overall health and quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To prospectively analyze the associations with coronary heart disease (CHD) risk of reallocating time from sedentary behavior to various physical activities using the isotemporal substitution model, particularly according to whether the participants meet the recommended physical activity level. METHODS We included 455,298 UK Biobank participants free of CHD at baseline (March 13, 2006, to October 10, 2010). Sedentary behavior time was quantified by summing up the time spent on television watching, computer (not at work), and driving. Physical activities were categorized as daily-life activities (walking for pleasure, light do-it-yourself, and heavy do-it-yourself) and structured exercise (strenuous sports and other exercise). RESULTS During a median follow-up of 11 years, 20,162 incident CHD cases were documented. Sedentary behavior time was significantly associated with a higher risk of CHD, independent of physical activity. Replacing 30 min/d of sedentary behavior with an equal time of various physical activities was associated with a 3% to 12% risk reduction of CHD. Replacing 1 h/d of sedentary behavior with different types of physical activities was associated with a 6% to 23% risk reduction of CHD. Sedentary behavior to strenuous sports reallocations showed the largest benefit. Reallocations of sedentary behavior to various physical activities showed particularly greater benefits among those who did not meet the physical activity recommendations. CONCLUSIONS Replacing sedentary behavior time with various daily-life activities or structured exercise is associated with significant reductions in CHD risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND For the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, the practice of physical exercises is an effective strategy in improving or maintaining cardiorespiratory health; however, a lack of time is a barrier to access and interval training appears as possible facilitator. This study aims to compare the effects of two interval training protocols on cardiac autonomic modulation in healthy women. METHODS we conducted a randomized clinical trial with 43 women with a mean age of 29.96 ± 6.25 years, allocated into two groups; high-intensity interval training (HIIT) consisting of four four-minute high-intensity sprints interspersed with three minutes of active recovery and the Sprint interval training (SIT) with four 30-s sprints all-out, interspersed with four minutes of recovery (active or passive). RESULTS the HIIT group presented better results for the patterns without variation (0V) variables (p = 0.022); Shannon entropy (p = 0.004) Conditional Entropy (p = 0.025). However, there was a significant group effect for some variables, Oxygen Volume (VO2) (p = 0.004), Square root of the mean quadratic differences between the adjacent normal R-R intervals (p = 0.002) and standard deviation of all normal R-R intervals recorded in a time interval (p = 0.003), demonstrating an improvement independent of the protocol. CONCLUSION we conclude that eight weeks of interval training were able to produce positive effects on cardiac autonomic modulation in healthy women, with better results for HIIT in this population.

Abstract
Today, more than 20% of the world's population suffers from hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease. Therefore, lifestyle modifications such as dietary change, smoking cessation, and exercise are often prescribed to hypertensive patients as a first-line treatment. This study aims to examine and compare the effects of different exercise regimens on the cardiovascular system, particularly that of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and lower-to-moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (aka aerobic exercise). After researching various databases and extracting 4,724 studies, 196 were viable within the exclusion criteria related to exercise's effects on blood pressure and maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max). Of these, 36 studies were selected as viable, and their data is herein outlined. In addition, the results provided by these studies were summarized, respectively, and the raw data were analyzed using a two-tailed unpaired t-test. Through this study, we aim to clarify whether HIIT or lower-to-moderate-intensity aerobic exercise differ in their effects on improving cardiovascular health. It was observed that HIIT was non-inferior to lower-to-moderate-intensity aerobic exercise in the reduction of ambulatory blood pressure of hypertensive or normotensive individuals. However, HIIT was more effective at increasing cardiorespiratory fitness by means of V̇O2max than aerobic exercise was. Considering the significant time-to-completion difference between both exercise modalities, it is remarkable that HIIT has the same benefits as lower-to-moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on blood pressure and higher efficiency in increasing V̇O2max.

Abstract
Exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) is associated with a number of adverse health outcomes. However, the relationship between mixed and individual PFAS exposure and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in adolescents remains unclear. We used cross-sectional data from 491 teenagers (aged 13-19 years) from the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and examined the association between mixed PFAS exposure and CRF via weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression. Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) was used to evaluate CRF. Multivariate linear regression was performed to investigate the relationship between each PFAS and VO2max as well as the relationship between PFAS exposure and the inflammation parameters and blood lipid content. Mediation analyses were performed to investigate possible explanations of the risk of low CRF due to PFAS exposure. The results showed that for males, mixed PFAS exposure was negatively related to VO2max (beta = - 0.80, 95% CI: - 1.53 to - 0.10, P = 0.028) and that of the PFASs, perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) had the greatest influence on VO2max. In the individual PFAS analysis, PFNA was negatively related to VO2max in male adolescents (beta = - 1.49, 95% CI: - 2.65 to - 0.32, P = 0.013). Additionally, significant relationships among serum PFNA levels and total cholesterol and the white blood cell (WBC) count were found. Mediation analyses revealed that WBC count accounted for 24.18% of the variation between PFNA level and CRF. The present results provide epidemiological evidence that exposure to PFASs, mainly PFNA, is negatively associated with CRF, possibly via alterations in WBC count.

Abstract
Background Several investigations suggest that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) provokes larger changes in VO2max compared to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT); other studies associate HIIT with significant decreases in total, abdominal and visceral fat mass. However, some meta-analyses express that the enhancements with HIIT on VO2max are slightly higher concerning MICT. These studies had low-to-moderate methodological quality, and the exercise protocols were completed mostly on treadmills or cycle ergometers. Thus, the objective of this study was to compare the effect of a low-volume HIIT versus a MICT program on VO2max, body fat percentage (BFP), and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in overweight women. It followed a research protocol with high methodological rigor and good reporting quality. Methods After two physical adaptation weeks (run-in period), thirty-five volunteers were randomized to HIIT (n = 16) or MICT (n = 19). Both groups performed 24 sessions on a grass sports field (walking, jogging or running). The HIIT group completed 15 bouts of 30 s [90–95%, maximal heart rate (HRmax)], while the MICT group completed 30 min of continuous exercise (65–75% HRmax). Results The difference between HIIT and MICT post-intervention on VO2max was not statistically significant (0.8 ml/kg/min. CI 95%, −1.0 to 2.7, p = 0.37). Similarly, no statistically significant differences were found between groups for BFP and HRQoL. Conclusions Low-volume HIIT program has no quantitative advantage compared with that resulting from MICT, in VO2max, BFP, and HRQoL. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03300895.

Abstract
Highly-intensive exercise occurs in reactive oxygen species which leads to cellular damage as a result of increased oxidative stress markers. An appropriate program design incorporating volume, intensity, and types of exercise may produce different effects amid oxidative status in athletes. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the outcomes of resistance training (RT) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on oxidative stress markers, and physical performance in university athlete subjects. The effect of two different protocol types (RT and HIIT) on oxidative stress and antioxidant status were also compared. Seventy-two university athletes, were recruited and divided into control, RT, and HIIT groups (n=22/group). The RT group were undertaken a resistance exercise training program of the upper and lower body. The HIIT group performed their exercise training on a cycle ergometer. The training program was 30 min/day, 3 days/wk, continuously over 8 weeks. We observed that long-term RT and HIIT improved blood glutathione and glutathione disulfide redox ratio in all athletes. The results demonstrated that only RT training significantly decreased plasma malondialdehyde. Another finding was that RT and HIIT resulted in similar elicitation of physical performance in the post-compared with pretraining exercise. This study revealed that RT and HIIT programs improved antioxidants and physical performance in university sports athletes. However, oxidative markers were only improved following the RT program. This study suggests that RT program is superior to HIIT in improving oxidative stress markers in sport athletes.

Abstract
The optimal exercise-training characteristics for reducing blood pressure (BP) are unclear. We investigated the effects of 6-weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on BP and aortic stiffness in males with overweight or obesity. Twenty-eight participants (18-45 years; BMI: 25-35 kg/m2) performed stationary cycling three times per week for 6 weeks. Participants were randomly allocated (unblinded) to work-matched HIIT (N = 16; 10 × 1-min intervals at 90-100% peak workload) or MICT (N = 12; 30 min at 65-75% peak heart rate). Central (aortic) and peripheral (brachial) BP and aortic stiffness was assessed before and after training. There were no significant group × time interactions for any BP measure (all p > 0.21). HIIT induced moderate reductions in central (systolic/diastolic ∆: -4.6/-3.5 mmHg, effect size d = -0.51/-0.40) and peripheral BP (-5.2/-4 mmHg, d = -0.45/-0.47). MICT induced moderate reductions in diastolic BP only (peripheral: -3.4 mmHg, d = -0.57; central: -3 mmHg, d = -0.50). The magnitude of improvement in BP was strongly negatively correlated with baseline BP (r = -0.66 to -0.78), with stronger correlations observed for HIIT (r = -0.73 to -0.88) compared with MICT (r = -0.43 to -0.61). HIIT was effective for reducing BP (~3-5 mmHg) in the overweight to obese cohort. Exercise training induced positive changes in central (aortic) BP. The BP-lowering effects of exercise training are more prominent in those with higher baseline BP, with stronger correlation in HIIT than MICT.
