Impact of Public Health and Social Measures on Cosmetic Treatments in the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Retrospective Multi-Center Study Combined With a Questionnaire-Based Cross-Sectional Study

BACKGROUND

Public health and social measures (PHSMs) are considered the most effective approaches for controlling epidemic diseases. This study aimed to explore variations in the time-dependent characteristics of and public preferences for cosmetic treatments during and after the implementation of PHSMs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHOD

Medical records from six medical institutions were extracted retrospectively. Time-series analyses were conducted to reveal the variations in characteristics in volume and proportion of cosmetic treatments according to PHSMs. A cross-sectional study was conducted with online questionnaire designed for the general population during and after the implementation of PHSMs.

RESULT

A total of 141 033 records were included in this retrospective study. The implementation of PHSMs led to extremely low treatment volumes; compared with the increases in private hospitals, the treatment volumes in public hospitals exhibited earlier and more significant increases, even higher than pre-PHSM levels (p < 0.05), which mainly contributed to the increase in plastic surgery volumes during and after the implementation of PHSMs. The differences in the anxiety state, self-perceived appearance, and cosmetic treatment intentions of the participants were illustrated during and after PHSMs. We further demonstrated the participants' decisions on cosmetic treatments after the implementation of PHSMs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

CONCLUSION

The immediate effects and aftereffects of PHSMs on cosmetic treatments were different in public and private hospitals. Furthermore, as PHSMs guided the adjustment of cosmetic treatments in the post-COVID-19 era, the intention to undergo cosmetic treatment during PHSMs was associated with the anxiety states and preferences of the population.

Transformations in postgraduate medical education following the COVID-19 pandemic: lessons learned from advances and challenges

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly reshaped postgraduate medical education, driving immediate and significant adaptations in teaching methodologies and educational frameworks. This review examines the multifaceted transformations within medical education environments, particularly in response to the pandemic. Through a structured narrative review of recent literature, we identify key lessons learned and the subsequent shifts in educational practices. Our analysis underscores the critical importance of flexibility in educational delivery, the integration of technology, and the emphasis on mental health and resilience among medical trainees. We also explore the challenges and successes associated with maintaining equality and diversity in a rapidly evolving educational landscape. The findings highlight the necessity for continuous professional development and robust support systems to navigate future challenges effectively. Recommendations are provided for educational institutions to enhance adaptability, foster inclusive learning environments, and prepare for unforeseen global health emergencies. This study aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on optimizing postgraduate medical education to better prepare health professionals for a dynamic and uncertain future.

Knowledge and vaccination intention of monkeypox in China's general population: A cross-sectional online survey

BACKGROUND

Public awareness of monkeypox is critical in the fight against this infectious disease. However, at present a survey of the Chinese population on monkeypox is lacking. This study was conducted to compensate for the lack of knowledge and identify a vaccination intention assessment for monkeypox in China.

METHODS

The questionnaire comprised 20 items with the following three aspects: basic information, knowledge, and willingness to vaccinate or pay. For this study, 521 valid respondents were recruited. Utilizing logistic regression, the researchers identified the factors related with knowledge and vaccination intentions.

RESULTS

The average total score for knowledge of monkeypox was 5.6 (score range 0-10), and 309 (59.3%) participants were categorized as having greater knowledge based on a total score of 6. Most participants (76.4%) were willing to accept a monkeypox vaccination. The average acceptable cost of the monkeypox vaccine was CNY261.2. Factors such as level of education, and working within the healthcare profession were related to monkeypox knowledge. An increased knowledge of monkeypox was related to a higher willingness to vaccinate. Participants who were willing to pay more for vaccines included those with high incomes, who suffered from chronic diseases, and healthcare workers.

CONCLUSIONS

The Chinese population had relatively high knowledge of monkeypox and demonstrated a willingness to receive the vaccine.
