Testing the heat dissipation limitation hypothesis: basal metabolic rates of endotherms decrease with increasing upper and lower critical temperatures

Body-Size Change in a Rodent Is Affected by Environmental Warming and Population-Specific Thermoneutral Zone

Rodent body size often exhibits a diversity of temperature-size patterns among and within species, which might be caused by differential thermoneutral zones (TNZs) and experienced extents of warming. Here, we test this hypothesis in populations of Apodemus agrarius. To study how body size varies across space, we analysed data on body size and temperature (specifically, annual mean minimum temperature) from nine sites spanning 1150 m of elevation. Using indirect calorimetry, we also measured the resting metabolic rate at different temperatures to infer the population-specific TNZ. To study how body size changes over time (2013-2020), we analysed body-size data of southern and northern populations from warm and cold sites, respectively. With increasing temperatures across space, body size increased and the TNZ narrowed. Moreover, during the eight years, temperature remained stable at the warm site but rose at the cold site. As a result, body size increased in the population at the cold site but remained stable in the population at the warm site. Finally, the rate of change in body size per 1 °C change in temperature was larger along the temporal than the spatial temperature gradient. Together, these results support our hypothesis that, among rodent populations, differential changes in body size can be caused by site-specific habitat warming and the population-specific TNZ. A population with a narrow TNZ can be restricted in its body-size response to habitat warming.

Review: Update of nutritional requirements of goats for growth and pregnancy in hot environments

Goats play an important role in the agricultural business, providing valuable income sources through producing high-quality animal protein. They are widespread livestock for rural households due to their inherent resiliency, adaptability to many environments, and suitability in sustainable production systems. While goats are reared in highly diverse environments, a great portion of their population is reared in hot environments. Heat stress is known to affect goats' productive and reproductive performance negatively. However, goats can remarkably thrive in harsh conditions due to physiological, metabolic, and molecular adaptive mechanisms. In the face of it, in the last decades, the nutrition of goats, particularly their nutritional requirements, has received special attention. Research groups worldwide have dedicated their efforts to updating feeding systems for goats. Our objective was to present the recent findings on the energy and nutrient requirements of growing and pregnant goats in hot environments. Energy and protein requirements for the maintenance and growth of goats are influenced by sex and genotype only when mature weight is not considered in the models. Sex and genotype affect the efficiency of energy use for growth but do not affect the efficiency of protein use. Major mineral requirements for maintenance and growth are not affected by sex, except for magnesium. However, the phosphorus, sodium, and potassium requirements of goats raised in hot environments differ from those in the feeding systems. This difference may be related to the adaptation mechanisms goats employ to cope with the hot environmental conditions. Regarding requirements for pregnancy, there was no effect of days of pregnancy on the energy or protein requirements. The efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization for pregnancy increased with the progress of pregnancy. Mineral accretion for pregnancy differs between single and twin pregnancies and, irrespective of pregnancy type, the mineral requirements increase as pregnancy progresses. The differences between the estimated dietary requirements of goats raised in hot environments and the most widely adopted feeding systems suggest that these goats may be using energy and nutrients to cope with heat stress and other stressors associated with hot environments. The recent findings on energy, protein, and mineral requirements of growing and pregnant goats can be an important resource of information for enhancing feeding systems worldwide.

Rapid adaptation of cellular metabolic rate to the MicroRNA complements of mammals and its relevance to the evolution of endothermy

The metabolic efficiency of mammalian cells depends on the attenuation of intrinsic translation noise by microRNAs. We devised a metric of cellular metabolic rate (cMR), rMR/Mexp optimally fit to the number of microRNA families (mirFam), that is robust to variation in mass and sensitive to body temperature (Tb), consistent with the heat dissipation limit theory of Speakman and Król (2010). Using mirFam as predictor, an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process of stabilizing selection, with an adaptive shift at the divergence of Boreoeutheria, accounted for 95% of the variation in cMR across mammals. Branchwise rates of evolution of cMR, mirFam and Tb concurrently increased 6- to 7-fold at the divergence of Boreoeutheria, independent of mass. Cellular MR variation across placental mammals was also predicted by the sum of model conserved microRNA-target interactions, revealing an unexpected degree of integration of the microRNA-target apparatus into the energy economy of the mammalian cell.

Differences in the range of thermoneutral zone between mouse strains: potential effects on translational research

Laboratory mice are commonly used for studies emulating human metabolism. To render human energetics, their ratio of daily (DEE) to basal (BMR) energy expenditure of 1.7-1.8 should be maintained. However, the DEE/BMR ratio strongly depends on whether a given study using a mouse model is carried out above, or below the lower critical temperature (LCT) of the thermoneutral zone, which is rarely considered in translational research. Here, we used mice artificially selected for high or low rates of BMR along with literature data to analyze the effect of ambient temperature on possible systematic bias in DEE/BMR. We demonstrated that the estimated LCTs of mice from the high and low BMR lines differ by more than 7°C. Furthermore, the range of variation of LCTs of mouse strains used in translational research spans from 23 to 33°C. Differences between LCTs in our selected mice and other mouse strains are mirrored by differences in their DEE-to-BMR ratio, on average increasing it at the rate of 0.172°C-1 at temperatures below LCT. Given the wide range of LCTs in different mouse strains, we conclude that the energetic cost of thermoregulation may differ greatly for different mouse strains with a potentially large impact on translational outcomes. Thus, the LCT of a given mouse strain is an important factor that must be considered in designing translational studies.
