Abstract
BACKGROUND Icaridin and DEET are common insect repellents widely used on human skin and clothing (skin-insect repellents [skin-IR]) to repel common pests, such as mosquitoes and biting flies. Novel analytical methods for urinary skin-IR exposure biomarkers that can be effectively applied in epidemiological studies and provide strong evidence related to risk assessment associated with daily exposure are required. In this study, we aimed to develop a method for analyzing the concentrations of icaridin, DEET, and two DEET metabolites N,N-diethyl-3-(hydroxymethyl) benzamide and 3-(diethylcarbamoyl) benzoic acid in human urine. METHODS In this analysis, after formic acid-induced acidification of the urine sample, exposure biomarkers were extracted using solid-phase extraction composed of a modified polystyrenedivinylbenzene polymer for reversed phase (hydrophobic) retention. Subsequently, high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was performed within 10 min for a separation analysis. The present method was applied to five Japanese adults (aged 20-43 years) who used icaridin or DEET-containing products within a week. RESULTS Limits of detection were 0.06-0.11 µg/L. Extraction recoveries were 74%-88%. The intraday and interday variations were 1.5-17.5 and 0.9-15.8% relative standard deviation, respectively. All exposure biomarkers were successfully detected in all five adults. Urinary concentrations of exposure biomarkers reached their maximum values within 15 h after starting to use skin-IR. CONCLUSIONS This method was successful in measuring urinary exposure biomarkers of skin-IR, including icaridin and DEET. Moreover, this study presents the first application of biomonitoring of urinary icaridin concentrations after using a commercial product.

Abstract
Amblyomma sculptum is a species of public health interest because it is associated with the transmission of the bacteria that causes Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF). The use of repellents on humans is a prophylactic measure widely used to provide protection against a series of arthropod vectors, including mosquitoes and ticks. However, in Brazil, the effectiveness of commercial repellents against A. sculptum is little known. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out specific studies to evaluate the repellency of these commercial products, registered for use against mosquitoes, against the star tick. The main goal of the present work was to evaluate the effectiveness of six commercial repellents against A. sculptum. Unfed nymphs, aged between two and eight weeks, were tested against products based on DEET (OFF!® and Repelex®), Icaridin (Exposis® and SBP®), and IR3535 (Johnsons and Henlau). Three bioassays were conducted to evaluate tick behavior: (i) filter paper, (ii) fingertip, and (iii) field. All bases tested showed high repellent activity, differing significantly (p < 0.05) from the control. It was observed the formulation with DEET resulted in the best results in the filter paper bioassay. In the fingertip bioassay, the DEET base repelled a greater number of ticks compared to Icaridin. In the field bioassay, there was no significant difference between the Icaridin base and DEET, and both formulations differed from the control (p < 0.05). The six formulations tested showed significant percentages of repellency against ticks; however, for the fingertip and field bioassays, the products OFF!®, Repelex®, and Exposis® were tested as they showed better performance in the filter paper test. OFF!® showed the best percentage of repellency (100%), followed by Repelex® (96.8%), and Exposis® (93.1%), considering the two-hour period of the bioassay-field-test. Proving the effectiveness of repellents on the market against A. sculptum presented in this study is crucial, since this is the main ectoparasite of humans that can transmit Rickettsia rickettsii when infected. The effectiveness of commercial insect repellents against other tick species that parasitize humans can also be explored.

Abstract
Objective This study examined the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of an at-risk population living in Niigata prefecture regarding tick-borne diseases (TBDs) and preventive strategies. Methods A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted to assess the KAP of the community. Results In total, 186 responses were received. Among the respondents, 130 (69·9%) were men, and the mean age was 51.1 (14·3). Nine (4·8%) respondents reported having experienced tick bites. Of the respondents, 44 (23.7%) knew about both scrub typhus and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome, while 156 (83·9%) and 71 (38·2%) recognized limiting skin exposure and use of insect repellents as preventive measures, respectively. The attitudes towards TBDs: being worried about tick bites (p = 0·018) and interested in preventing TBDs (p = 0·001), were significantly higher among women than men. About 75% of the respondents reported taking preventive measures against tick bites, and limiting skin exposure was the most frequently applied method (69·9%). Insect repellents were used by 58 (31·2%) respondents. Age (p = 0·049), being worried about tick bites (p = 0·046), and knowledge of ticks score (p = 0·024) were the significant independent predictors of practicing countermeasures. Conclusion We identified gaps in knowledge and practices regarding TBDs. Public health interventions should be implemented to improve public awareness of TBDs.

Abstract
The Wilderness Medical Society convened an expert panel to develop evidence-based guidelines for the prevention and management of tick-borne illness (TBI). Recommendations are graded based on quality of supporting evidence according to criteria put forth by the American College of Chest Physicians. The guidelines include a brief review of the clinical presentation, epidemiology, prevention, and management of TBI in the United States, with a primary focus on interventions that are appropriate for resource-limited settings. Strong recommendations are provided for the use of DEET, picaridin, and permethrin; tick checks; washing and drying clothing at high temperatures; mechanical tick removal within 36 h of attachment; single-dose doxycycline for high-risk Lyme disease exposures versus "watchful waiting;" evacuation from backcountry settings for symptomatic tick exposures; and TBI education programs. Weak recommendations are provided for the use of light-colored clothing; insect repellents other than DEET, picaridin, and permethrin; and showering after exposure to tick habitat. Weak recommendations are also provided against passive methods of tick removal, including the use of systemic and local treatments. There was insufficient evidence to support the use of long-sleeved clothing and the avoidance of tick habitat such as long grasses and leaf litter. Although there was sound evidence supporting Lyme disease vaccination, a grade was not offered as the vaccine is not currently available for use in the United States.

Abstract
Biting midges (Diptera; Ceratopogonidae; Culicoides spp.) are biological vectors of disease agents, and they cause nuisance and insect bite hypersensitivity. Currently there are no effective means to control biting midges as screening is impractical and the application of insecticides or repellents is of limited efficacy. Spatial repellents have the advantage over contact repellents that they can create a vector-free environment. Studies have shown the efficacy of spatial repellents to protect humans against mosquitoes, also outdoors, but no data are available for biting midges. We tested the spatial repellency and toxicity (knockdown effect) of the volatile pyrethroid transfluthrin against the laboratory-reared biting midges Culicoides nubeculosus (Meigen) and Culicoides sonorensis (Wirth and Jones) and the mosquito Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) in a high-throughput tube setup. Observations were made 15, 30 and 60 min. after application of the repellent. In addition to transfluthrin, the non-volatile pyrethroid permethrin and DEET, the gold standard of repellents, were included. Spatial repellency by transfluthrin was observed against both biting midge species and Ae. aegypti, already at the first observation after 15 min. and at much lower concentrations than DEET. Permethrin was spatially repellent only to C. sonorensis at the highest concentration tested (10 μg/cm2). Knockdown of biting midges and mosquitoes by transfluthrin, both by vapour or contact toxicity, was observed even at low concentrations. DEET had little to no effect on the knockdown of the insects, neither by direct contact nor vapour toxicity, while permethrin caused a high proportion of knockdown when direct contact was possible. In case these results can be confirmed in field experiments, spatial repellents could become a novel tool in integrated control programmes to reduce biting by Culicoides spp.

Abstract
Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) causes mild or moderate febrile illness in humans that may progress to encephalitis, leading to severe long-term complications and sometimes death. TBEV is prevalent in the Eurasian continent and has been isolated in China, Japan and Republic of Korea (ROK). The TBEV isolates from Japan are of the Far-Eastern subtype; in ROK, the isolates are of the Western subtype; and all TBEV isolates in China are of the Far-Eastern subtype, except one strain that was identified most recently as the Siberian subtype. TBE is endemic to the northeast, northwest and southeast of China; only two confirmed TBE cases have been reported in Japan to date; and no TBE case has been confirmed in ROK. For TBE patients in China, the onset of disease is acute with no biphasic course for disease presentation. The clinical spectrum of disease phenotypes may be wider than currently understood, since serological evidence suggests the presence of TBEV infections in healthy people, indicating that asymptomatic or unspecific manifestations of TBEV infection may exist. The current treatment for TBE is supportive care. In China, vaccines against TBEV have been developed and are available with demonstrated immunogenicity and safety, although efficacy data are lacking. No vaccines are available in ROK or Japan.
