Supramolecular Strategy to Achieve Distinct Optical Characteristics and Boosted Chiroptical Enhancement Based on the Closed Conformation of Platinum(II) Complexes

Synthesis of chiral molecules for understanding and revealing the expression, transfer, and amplification of chirality is beneficial to explore effective chiral medicines and high-performance chiroptical materials. Herein, we report a series of square-planar phosphorescent platinum(II) complexes adopting a dominantly closed conformation that exhibit efficient chiroptical transfer and enhancement due to the nonclassical intramolecular C-H···O or C-H···F hydrogen bonds between bipyridyl chelating and alkynyl auxiliary ligands as well as the intermolecular π-π stacking and metal-metal interactions. The spectroscopic and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that the chirality and optic properties are regulated from the molecular level to hierarchical assemblies. Notably, a 154 times larger g_abs value of the circular dichroism signals is obtained. This study provides a feasible design principle to achieve large chiropticity and control the expression and transfer of the chirality.

Dual supramolecular chirogenesis based on platinum(II) metallotweezers

Optically active platinum(II) metallotweezers demonstrate both self-complexation and host-guest complexation capabilities, leading to two distinct supramolecular chirogenic signals in the visible region.

Solvent-driven chirality for luminescent self-assembled structures: experiments and theory

We describe, for a single platinum complex bearing a dipeptide moiety, a solvent-driven interconversion from twisted to straight micrometric assembled structures with different chirality. The photophysical and morphological properties of the aggregates have been investigated as well as the role of the media and concentration. A real-time visualization of the solvent-driven interconversion processes has been achieved by confocal microscopy. Finally, atomistic and coarse-grained simulations, providing results consistent with the experimental observations, allow to obtain a molecular-level insight into the interesting solvent-responsive behavior of this system.

Multinuclear PtII Complexes: Why Three is Better Than Two to Enhance Photophysical Properties

The self-assembly of platinum complexes is a well-documented process that leads to interesting changes of the photophysical and electrochemical behavior as well as to a change in reactivity of the complexes. However, it is still not clear how many metal units must interact in order to achieve the desired properties of a large assembly. This work aimed to clarify the role of the number of interacting PtII units leading to an enhancement of the spectroscopic properties and how to address inter- versus intramolecular processes. Therefore, a series of neutral multinuclear PtII complexes were synthesized and characterized, and their photophysical properties at different concentration were studied. Going from the monomer to dimers, the growth of a new emission band and the enhancement of the emission properties were observed. Upon increasing the platinum units up to three, the monomeric blue emission could not be detected anymore and a concentration independent bright-yellow/orange emission, due to the establishment of intramolecular metallophilic interactions, was observed.

Steering the Achiral into Chiral with a Self-Assembly Strategy

Chirality transfer from self-assembly of achiral titanyl phthalocyanine (TiOPc) to its top-sitting TiOPc molecule has been successfully achieved. The TiOPc molecules first assemble into a porous network on Au(111) that contains periodic chiral voids, each being fenced by four axially rotating TiOPc molecules in upward adsorption geometry where their ending O atoms exclusively point away from the substrate. The additional top-sitting TiOPc molecule turns out to be chiral upon adsorption on a chiral void with its ending O atom toward the substrate. The chirality of the top-sitting TiOPc is associated with a charge transfer between its indole rings and the ending O atoms of the underlying TiOPc molecules that form the chiral void, resulting in asymmetric electronic density of the indole rings in the top-sitting molecule and accordingly the chirality of the molecular orbitals. Such a scenario also validates other planar achiral metallophthalocyanines such as copper phthalocyanine that become chiral upon adsorption on the chiral voids in the underlying TiOPc assembly, indicating that the chirality transfer mechanism from assembly to the top-sitting molecule is not uncommon.

Luminescence of Amphiphilic PtII Complexes Controlled by Confinement

The formation of hybrid silica-based systems to study the effect of the confinement on the emission properties of self-assembled platinum(II) complexes is reported. The complexes behave as surfactants since they possess a hydrophobic moiety and, on the ancillary ligand, a relatively long hydrophilic chain terminated with a positively charged group. The compounds, soluble in water, self-assemble, even at very low concentration, in supramolecular structures which display an orange luminescence. The properties of the assemblies have been studied in detail and in order to stabilize these supramolecular architectures and to enhance their emission properties hybrid silica porous nanoparticles have been prepared. In particular the Pt^II complexes have been employed as co-surfactant for the template formation of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) using a sol gel synthesis. Interestingly, upon encapsulation in the silica pores, the platinum aggregates exhibit an emission profile similar in energy to the complexes assembled in solution, but the photoluminescence quantum yields of the hybrid systems are significantly higher (up to 45 %), and the excited state lifetimes much longer than those recorded in solution. Such enhancement of the photophysical properties together with the possibility to process the hybrid silica nanomaterials can pave the way to new type of emitters.

Supramolecular platinum(ii) complexes with highly efficient monomer luminescence

A new platinum(ii) complex containing a quaternary ammonium group was synthesized. The monomer and excimer emission of the complex could be tuned via the solvophobic effect, which was accompanied by transformation from a fiber to ribbon-like morphology.

Chirality in metal-based anticancer agents

Chiral metal-based drugs are currently an interesting and rapidly growing field in anticancer research. Here the different chiral metal-based anticancer agents and the extent to which the chiral resolution affects their biological properties are discussed. This review will aid the design of new potent and efficient chiral metal-based anticancer drugs that exploit the unique properties combined with their potential selectivity toward targeted chiral biomolecules.

Solvent-tuned charge-transfer properties of chiral Pt(ii) complex and TCNQ˙− anion adducts

A new pair of adducts comprising one chiral Pt(ii) complex cation, [Pt((−)-L₁)(Dmpi)]⁺ ((−)-1) or [Pt((+)-L₁)(Dmpi)]⁺ ((+)-1) [(−)-L₁ = (−)-4,5-pinene-6′-phenyl-2,2′-bipyridine, (+)-L₁ = (+)-4,5-pinene-6′-phenyl-2,2′-bipyridine, Dmpi = 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide], together with one TCNQ˙⁻ anion have been obtained, and the structures have been confirmed via single-crystal X-ray crystallography and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The chiral Pt(ii) cation and TCNQ˙⁻ anion are dissociated in MeOH solution, while charge transfer adducts are formed in H₂O solution, leading to perturbation of the electronic structure and alteration of the chiral environment, as evidenced by the differences in the UV-vis absorption and electronic circular dichroism spectra. The solvent-tuned charge-transfer properties also have been validated through emission and resonance light scattering spectra. The interesting findings may have potential applications in the development of black absorbers and wide band gap semiconductors.

A new couple of charge transfer adducts comprising of one chiral Pt(ii) complex cation together with one TCNQ˙⁻ anion have been prepared, and solvent-induced variances of absorption, luminescence as well as chiral spectra have been investigated.

Molecular Engineering of Platinum(II) Terpyridine Complexes with Tetraphenylethylene-Modified Alkynyl Ligands: Supramolecular Assembly via Pt···Pt and/or π-π Stacking Interactions and the Formation of Various Superstructures

A series of platinum(II) terpyridine complexes with tetraphenylethylene-modified alkynyl ligands has been designed and synthesized. The introduction of the tetraphenylethylene motif has led to aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, which upon self-assembly led to the formation of metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MMLCT) behavior stabilized by Pt···Pt and/or π-π interactions. Tuning the steric bulk or hydrophilicity through molecular engineering of the platinum(II) complexes has been found to alter their spectroscopic properties and result in interesting superstructures (including nanorods, nanospheres, nanowires, and nanoleaves) in the self-assembly process. The eye-catching color and emission changes upon varying the solvent compositions may have potential applications in chemosensing materials for the detection of microenvironment changes. Furthermore, the importance of the directional Pt···Pt and/or π-π interactions on the construction of distinctive superstructures has also been examined by UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. This work represents the interplay of both inter- and intramolecular interactions as well as the energies of the two different chromophoric/luminophoric systems that may open up a new route for the development of platinum(II)-AIE hybrids as functional materials.

Dimensional Control and Morphological Transformations of Supramolecular Polymeric Nanofibers Based on Cofacially-Stacked Planar Amphiphilic Platinum(II) Complexes

Square-planar platinum(II) complexes often stack cofacially to yield supramolecular fiber-like structures with interesting photophysical properties. However, control over fiber dimensions and the resulting colloidal stability is limited. We report the self-assembly of amphiphilic Pt(II) complexes with solubilizing ancillary ligands based on polyethylene glycol [PEG_n, where n = 16, 12, 7]. The complex with the longest solubilizing PEG ligand, Pt-PEG₁₆, self-assembled to form polydisperse one-dimensional (1D) nanofibers (diameters <5 nm). Sonication led to short seeds which, on addition of further molecularly dissolved Pt-PEG₁₆ complex, underwent elongation in a "living supramolecular polymerization" process to yield relatively uniform fibers of length up to ca. 400 nm. The fiber lengths were dependent on the Pt-PEG₁₆ complex to seed mass ratio in a manner analogous to a living covalent polymerization of molecular monomers. Moreover, the fiber lengths were unchanged in solution after 1 week and were therefore "static" with respect to interfiber exchange processes on this time scale. In contrast, similarly formed near-uniform fibers of Pt-PEG₁₂ exhibited dynamic behavior that led to broadening of the length distribution within 48 h. After aging for 4 weeks in solution, Pt-PEG₁₂ fibers partially evolved into 2D platelets. Furthermore, self-assembly of Pt-PEG₇ yielded only transient fibers which rapidly evolved into 2D platelets. On addition of further fiber-forming Pt complex (Pt-PEG₁₆), the platelets formed assemblies via the growth of fibers selectively from their short edges. Our studies demonstrate that when interfiber dynamic exchange is suppressed, dimensional control and hierarchical structure formation are possible for supramolecular polymers through the use of kinetically controlled seeded growth methods.
