A pyridine-N-oxide catenane for cation recognition

The rapid preparation of a pyridine-N-oxide containing [2]catenane is described. The [2]catenane was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-ray single crystal structure determination. 1H NMR titration experiments reveal the [2]catenane may be reversibly protonated, as well as an ability to bind lithium cations more strongly than sodium cations.

Development of fluorophoric [2]pseudorotaxanes and [2]rotaxane: selective sensing of Zn(II)

Fluorophoric [2]pseudorotaxanes {NiPR1(ClO4)2-NiPR3(ClO4)2} are synthesized by utilizing newly designed fluorophoric bidentate ligands (L1-L3) and a heteroditopic naphthalene containing macrocycle (NaphMC) with high yields via Ni(II) templation and π-π stacking interactions. Subsequently, a fluorophoric [2]rotaxane (NAPRTX) is established through a Cu(I) catalysed click reaction between an azide terminated pseudorotaxane, {NiPR4(ClO4)2}, which contains the newly designed fluorophoric ligand L4, and alkyne terminated bulky stopper units. All these fluorophoric [2]pseudorotaxanes and the [2]rotaxane were characterized using numerous techniques such as mass spectrometry, NMR, UV/Vis, PL, and elemental analysis, wherever applicable. Furthermore, to investigate the effect of the fluorophoric moieties, the coordinating ability of chelating units, and size and shape of the three dimensional cavity generated by the mechanical bond in the interlocked [2]rotaxane (NAPRTX), we have performed a sensing study of various metal ions. Thus, the interlocked [2]rotaxane is found to have potential as a selective fluorescent sensor for Zn(II) metal ions over other transition, alkali and alkaline earth metal ions, where the 2,2'-bipyridyl arylvinylene moiety of the axle acts as a fluorescence signalling unit.

Emerging properties from mechanical tethering within a post-synthetically functionalised catenane scaffold

Using a post-synthetic modification strategy we have prepared a series of functionalised [2]catenanes to study the impact of mechanically-enforced proximity on functional group properties, including emission, electrochemistry and photoreactivity.

Halogen-Bonding Strapped Porphyrin BODIPY Rotaxanes for Dual Optical and Electrochemical Anion Sensing

Anion receptors employing two distinct sensory mechanisms are rare. Herein, we report the first examples of halogen-bonding porphyrin BODIPY [2]rotaxanes capable of both fluorescent and redox electrochemical sensing of anions. 1 H NMR, UV/visible and electrochemical studies revealed rotaxane axle triazole group coordination to the zinc(II) metalloporphyrin-containing macrocycle component, serves to preorganise the rotaxane binding cavity and dramatically enhances anion binding affinities. Mechanically bonded, integrated-axle BODIPY and macrocycle strapped metalloporphyrin motifs enable the anion recognition event to be sensed by the significant quenching of the BODIPY fluorophore and cathodic perturbations of the metalloporphyrin P/P+. redox couple.

Correlations between Substituent Effects and Catalytic Activities: A Quantitative Approach for the Development of Halogen-Bonding-Driven Anion-Binding Catalysts

A quantitative approach for the development of halogen-bonding-driven anion-binding catalysts was studied using 4-substituted perfluorinated iodobenzene. ¹⁹ F NMR titrations were used to determine the binding constants K for chloride, and their catalytic activities were evaluated in the allylation reaction of a N-activated pyridine. We discovered that the log K and product yields were linearly correlated, and that they were dependent on the Hammett substituent parameter, σ_meta (r² =0.99). This linear correlation provided a quantitative predictive model for both the binding constant and the reaction yield. Concomitantly, this efficiently permitted the development of a highly active anion-binding catalyst, namely 4-CNC₆ F₄ I (K=489±5 M^-1 ). Additionally, the catalytic activity of 4-CNC₆ F₄ I was established in the allylation and crotylation of N-activated isoquinolines (7 examples). Overall, this approach highlights the value of quantitative analysis by exploring experimentally informed correlations in the development of halogen bond donor catalysts.

Functional Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Anion Sensing

We report an anion-sensing platform wherein conductance changes are triggered by chemical interactions between selectors and anions. The selector design incorporates both a cationic moiety (i.e., pyridinium) and a thiourea-based dual-hydrogen-bond donor. Anion binding by a model selector (2) was studied using ¹H NMR and UV-vis titrations, which reveal a binding strength toward acetate ions (AcO^-) followed by Cl^- > Br^- > NO₃^-. These studies reveal that selector 2 is deprotonated upon addition of AcO^-, whereas it undergoes hydrogen bonding associated with Cl^-, Br^-, and NO₃^-. The cationic pyridinium moiety improves anion binding affinity by lowering the pK_a value of selector 2 and enhancing the hydrogen-bond donor capability as confirmed by spectroscopic titrations and DFT calculations. The selector is covalently attached to poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP), which wraps single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) (i.e., P4VP-2-SWCNT) to transduce an electrical signal. As a result, continuous anion sensing was achieved with high sensitivity represented by a normalized resistance change of 101.9 ± 10.3% toward 16.7 mM AcO^-, whereas negligible sensitivity was observed toward Cl^-, Br^-, and NO₃^-. The sensitivity transition was attributed to the internal charge transfer of 2 by deprotonation of the thiourea proton upon addition of AcO^-.

Electrochemical Anion Sensing: Supramolecular Approaches

Anions play a vital role in a broad range of environmental, technological, and physiological processes, making their detection/quantification valuable. Electroanalytical sensors offer much to the selective, sensitive, cheap, portable, and real-time analysis of anion presence where suitable combinations of selective (noncovalent) recognition and transduction can be integrated. Spurred on by significant developments in anion supramolecular chemistry, electrochemical anion sensing has received considerable attention in the past two decades. In this review, we provide a detailed overview of all electroanalytical techniques that have been used for this purpose, including voltammetric, impedimetric, capacititive, and potentiometric methods. We will confine our discussion to sensors that are based on synthetic anion receptors with a specific focus on reversible, noncovalent interactions, in particular, hydrogen- and halogen-bonding. Apart from their sensory properties, we will also discuss how electrochemical techniques can be used to study anion recognition processes (e.g., binding constant determination) and will furthermore provide a detailed outlook over future efforts and promising new avenues in this field.

Properties and emerging applications of mechanically interlocked ligands

Mechanically interlocked molecules have a long and rich history as ligands thanks to the key role coordination chemistry has played in the development of high yielding passive template syntheses of rotaxanes and catenanes. In this Feature Article, we highlight the effect of the mechanical bond on the properties of metal ions bound within the sterically hindered environment of the macrocycle cavity, and discuss the emerging applications of interlocked ligands in catalysis, sensing and supramolecular materials.

Copper(ii)-directed synthesis of neutral heteroditopic [2]rotaxane ion-pair host systems incorporating hydrogen and halogen bonding anion binding cavities

Neutral heteroditopic [2]rotaxane ion-pair host systems were synthesised via a copper(ii)-directed metal template strategy and shown to undergo cooperative anion recognition with a co-bound zinc(ii) cation.

Ion-pair recognition by a neutral [2]rotaxane based on a bis-calix[4]pyrrole cyclic component

In this work, we report our investigations on the synthesis of a [2]rotaxane based on a bis(calix[4]pyrrole) cyclic component and a 3,5-bis-amidepyridyl-N-oxide derivative axle. We isolated the [2]rotaxane in a significant 50% yield through an optimized "in situ" capping strategy using the copper(i)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction. The synthetic precursor of the [2]rotaxane, featuring [2]pseudorotaxane topology, could be quantitatively assembled in solution in the presence of one equivalent of tetrabutylammonium chloride or cyanate salts producing a four-particle aggregate. However, we observed that the addition of the salt was deleterious not only for the isolation of the [2]rotaxane in its pure form but, more important, for the optimal performance of the copper catalyst. We probed the interaction of the prepared [2]rotaxane with tetraalkylammonium salts of chloride, nitrate and cyanate anions by means of 1H NMR titrations and ITC experiments. We show that in chloroform solution the [2]rotaxane functions as an efficient heteroditopic receptor for the salts forming thermodynamically and kinetically highly stable ion-paired complexes with 1 : 1 stoichiometry. At millimolar concentration and using 1H NMR spectroscopy we observed that the addition of more than 1 equiv. of the salt induced the gradual disassembly of the 1 : 1 complex of the [2]rotaxane and the concomitant formation of higher stoichiometry aggregates i.e. 2 : 1 complexes.

Halogen bonding in polymer science: from crystal engineering to functional supramolecular polymers and materials

The applications of halogen bonding in surface functionalization, soft, luminescent and magnetic materials, interpenetrated networks, synthetic methods, and separation and inclusion techniques are reviewed.
