The Role of Aryldiazonium Chemistry in Designing Electrochemical Aptasensors for the Detection of Food Contaminants

Food safety monitoring assays based on synthetic recognition structures such as aptamers are receiving considerable attention due to their remarkable advantages in terms of their ability to bind to a wide range of target analytes, strong binding affinity, facile manufacturing, and cost-effectiveness. Although aptasensors for food monitoring are still in the development stage, the use of an electrochemical detection route, combined with the wide range of materials available as transducers and the proper immobilization strategy of the aptamer at the transducer surface, can lead to powerful analytical tools. In such a context, employing aryldiazonium salts for the surface derivatization of transducer electrodes serves as a simple, versatile and robust strategy to fine-tune the interface properties and to facilitate the convenient anchoring and stability of the aptamer. By summarizing the most important results disclosed in the last years, this article provides a comprehensive review that emphasizes the contribution of aryldiazonium chemistry in developing electrochemical aptasensors for food safety monitoring.

Imparting superhydrophobic and biocidal functionalities to a polymeric substrate by the sonochemical method

Multifunctional substrates with superhydrophobic and biocidal properties are gaining interest for a wide range of applications; however, the production of such surfaces remains challenging. Here, the sonochemical method is utilized to impart superhydrophobicity and antimicrobial properties to a polyethylene (PE) sheet. This is achieved by sonochemically depositing nanoparticles (NPs) of a hydrophobic fluoro-polymer (FP) on the PE sheets. The polymer is a flexible, transparent fluoroplastic composed of tetrafluoroethylene, hexafluoropropylene and vinylidene fluoride in the form of a powder. The NPs of polymers are generated and deposited on the surface of the PE using ultrasound irradiation. Optimizing the process results in a homogeneous distribution of 110-200 nm of NPs on the PE surface. The coated surface displays a water-contact angle of 160°, indicating excellent superhydrophobicity. This superhydrophobic surface shows high stability under outdoor conditions for two months, which is essential for various applications. In addition, metal-oxide nanoparticles (CuO or ZnO NPs) were integrated into the polymer coating to achieve antibacterial properties and increase the surface roughness. The metal oxides were also deposited sonochemically. The antibacterial activity of the FP@ZnO and FP@CuO PE composites was tested against the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, and the results show that the FP@CuO PE can effectively eradicate the bacteria. This study highlights the feasibility of using the sonochemical method to deposit two separate functions, opening up new possibilities for producing "smart" novel surfaces.

Dyneon THV, a fluorinated thermoplastic as a novel material for microchip capillary electrophoresis

In this work, we have investigated Dyneon THV, a fluorinated material, as a new material to afford electrokinetic separations in microfluidic devices. To overcome protein adsorption, two poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based coatings have been investigated: Pluronic F127 and PEO stearate 40. The best results were obtained with the PEO stearate 40 coating which allowed decreasing the surface contact angle from 91 ± 3 to 76°± 3. With this surface treatment, a 66% reduction of the electroosmotic mobility at pH 8.0 and a marked suppression of protein adsorption were observed compared to a native Dyneon THV microchip. Finally, a separation of fluorescently labeled proteins (bovine serum albumin and trypsin inhibitor), well-known for their strong tendency to adsorb on hydrophobic surfaces, was successfully achieved in an HEPES buffer with a PEO stearate 40 treated microchip by capillary zone electrophoresis. Furthermore, we demonstrated the possibility to perform non-aqueous capillary electrophoresis analysis of hydrophobic dyes using various solvents in untreated microchips. The overall results demonstrated not only the suitability of the Dyneon THV microchip for electrokinetic separations, but also its versatility allowing different separation modes to be implemented with the same microchip material.

Surface Modification of Polymers by Reaction of Alkyl Radicals

The surfaces of poly(methyl methacrylate) and polyethylene are modified either (i) by a two-step process including the thermal reaction of alkyl radicals derived from bromohexanoic acid in a mixture of 2,6-dimethylbenzene diazonium salt and neat isopentyl nitrite at 60 °C, followed by reaction with p-nitroaniline, anthraquinone, neutral red, and polyethylene glycol moieties, or (ii) by reaction of a previously anthraquinone-modified bromohexanoic acid. The modified surfaces are characterized by IR, XPS, UV, and water contact angles. A mechanism is proposed to rationalize the results. This approach is an efficient way to modify and pattern polymer surfaces with different organic groups and chemical functionalities under mild conditions.
