Abstract
Developing efficient catalysts for ammonia synthesis is increasingly crucial but remains a formidable challenge due to the lack of robust design criteria, particularly in addressing the activity and selectivity issues, especially in electrochemical nitrogen reduction reactions (NRR). In this study, we systematically investigated the catalytic potential of hexagonal boron nitride (BN) embedded with non-metal (C, Si, P and S) atoms as an electrocatalyst for the nitrogen reduction reaction using density functional theory (DFT) computations. The preference for non-metal-doped BN nanomaterials stems from their ability to suppress hydrogen evolution and their environmentally friendly nature, in contrast to transition metals. Among the designed single-atom catalysts (SACs), Si-doped boron nitride (SiBBN) exhibits a favorable inclination toward activating nitrogen, which is determined by the combination of advantageous molecular orbital coupling and formation of a covalent bond with the N2 molecule. Under thermal conditions, the first protonation step emerges as the rate-determining step (22.66 kcal mol-1) for SiBBN. Conversely, under electrochemical conditions, the final elementary step becomes the potential-determining step (PDS) with 2.38 eV. We explored the impact of the exogenous addition of Lewis acids (alkali metal ions, neutral boron Lewis acids, and halogen bond donors) on modulating the electrochemical NRR activity. Our results highlight the pivotal role of halogen bond donors as catalytic promoters in facilitating electron density transfer through activated N2, establishing a push-pull charge transfer mechanism that populates the distal nitrogen more than the proximal nitrogen. This facilitates the potential requirements for the first reduction step. The synergistic effect of both halogen bonding and hydrogen bonding interactions in the final reduction step was proven to be the main determinant for a significant reduction in the PDS from 2.38 to 0.10 V. Notably, this study unveils the pioneering role of halogen bond donors as promoters for NRR, providing valuable insights into the development of robust metal-free catalysts and promoters in experimental research.

Abstract
Anion recognition is pertinent to a range of environmental, medicinal and industrial applications. Recent progress in the field has relied on advances in synthetic host design to afford a broad range of potent recognition motifs and novel supramolecular structures capable of effective binding both in solution and at derived molecular films. However, performance in aqueous media remains a critical challenge. Understanding the effects of bulk and local solvent on anion recognition by host scaffolds is imperative if effective and selective detection in real-world media is to be viable. This Review seeks to provide a framework within which these effects can be considered both experimentally and theoretically. We highlight proposed models for solvation effects on anion binding and discuss approaches to retain strong anion binding in highly competitive (polar) solvents. The synthetic design principles for exploiting the aforementioned solvent effects are explored.

Abstract
The ubiquity of charged species in biological and industrial processes has resulted in ever-increasing interest in their selective recognition, detection, and environmental remediation. Building on the established coordination chemistry principles of the chelate and macrocyclic effects, and host preorganization, supramolecular chemists seek to construct specific 3D binding cavities reminiscent of biotic systems to enhance host-guest binding affinity and selectivity. Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) present a wholly unique platform for synthetic host design, wherein topologies afforded by the mechanical bond enable the decoration of 3D cavities for non-covalent interactions with a range of target guest geometries. Notably, MIM host systems exhibit mechanical bond effect augmented affinities and selectivities for a variety of charged guest species, compared to non-interlocked acyclic and macrocycle host analogs. Furthermore, the modular nature of MIM synthesis facilitates incorporation of optical and electrochemical reporter groups, enabling fabrication of highly sensitive and specific molecular sensors. This review discusses the development of recognition and sensing MIMs, from the first reports in the late 20th century through to the present day, delineating how their topologically preorganized and dynamic host cavities enhance charged guest recognition and sensing, demonstrating the mechanical bond effect as a potent tool in future chemosensing materials.

Abstract
The prevalence of anion-cation contacts in biomolecular recognition under aqueous conditions suggests that ionic interactions should dominate the binding of anions in solvents across both high and low polarities. Investigations of this idea using titrations in low polarity solvents are impaired by interferences from ion pairing that prevent a clear picture of binding. To address this limitation and test the impact of ion-ion interactions across multiple solvents, we quantified chloride binding to a cationic receptor after accounting for ion pairing. In these studies, we created a chelate receptor using aryl-triazole CH donors and a quinolinium unit that directs its cationic methyl inside the binding pocket. In low-polarity dichloromethane, the 1 : 1 complex (log K1 : 1 ~ 7.3) is more stable than neutral chelates, but fortuitously comparable to a preorganized macrocycle (log K1 : 1 ~ 6.9). Polar acetonitrile and DMSO diminish stabilities of the charged receptor (log K1 : 1 ~ 3.7 and 1.9) but surprisingly 100-fold more than the macrocycle. While both receptors lose stability by dielectric screening of electrostatic stability, the cationic receptor also pays additional costs of organization. Thus even though the charged receptor has stronger binding in apolar solvents, the uncharged receptor has more anion affinity in polar solvents.

Abstract
A highly halide affine, tetradentate pnictogen-bonding host-system based on the syn-photodimer of 1,8-diethynylanthracene was synthesized by a selective tin-antimony exchange reaction. The host carries four C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Sb(C2F5)2 units and has been investigated regarding its ability to act as a Lewis acidic host component for the cooperative trapping of halide ions (F-, Cl-, Br-, I-). The chelating effect makes this host-system superior to its bidentate derivative in competition experiments. It represents a charge-reversed crown-4 and has the ability to dissolve otherwise poorly soluble salts like tetra-methyl-ammonium chloride. Its NMR-spectroscopic properties make it a potential probe for halide ions in solution. Insights into the structural properties of the halide adducts by X-ray diffraction and computational methods (DFT, QTAIM, IQA) reveal a complex interplay of attractive pnictogen bonding interactions and Coulomb repulsion.

Abstract
A bidentate pnictogen bonding host-system based on 1,8-diethynylanthracene was synthesized by a selective tin-antimony exchange reaction and investigated regarding its ability to act as a Lewis acidic host component for the complexation of Lewis basic or anionic guests. In this work, the novel C≡C-Sb(C2 F5 )2 unit was established to study the potential of antimony(III) sites as representatives for the scarcely explored pnictogen bonding donors. The capability of this partly fluorinated host system was investigated towards halide anions (Cl- , Br- , I- ), dimethyl chalcogenides Me2 Y (Y=O, S, Se, Te), and nitrogen heterocycles (pyridine, pyrimidine). Insights into the adduct formation behavior as well as the bonding situation of such E⋅⋅⋅Sb-CF moieties were obtained in solution by means of NMR spectroscopy, in the solid state by X-ray diffraction, by elemental analyses, and by computational methods (DFT, QTAIM, IQA), respectively.

Abstract
Several examples of the cyaphide-azide 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction to afford metallo-triazaphospholes are reported. The gold(I) triazaphospholes Au(IDipp)(CPN3 R) (IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene; R=t Bu, Ad, Dipp), magnesium(II) triazaphospholes, {Mg(Dipp NacNac)(CPN3 R)}2 (Dipp NacNac=CH{C(CH3 )N(Dipp)}2 , Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl; R=t Bu, Bn), and germanium(II) triazaphosphole Ge(Dipp NacNac)-(CPN3 t Bu) can be prepared straightforwardly, under mild conditions and in good yields, in a manner reminiscent of the classic alkyne-azide click reaction (albeit without a catalyst). This reactivity can be extended to compounds with two azide functional groups such as 1,3-diazidobenzene. It is shown that the resulting metallo-triazaphospholes can be used as precursors to carbon-functionalized species, including protio- and iodo-triazaphospholes.

Abstract
A new approach towards highly enantioselective halogen-bonding catalysis has been developed. To circumvent the intrinsic issues of the nature of the halogen-bond (XB) and the resultant unresolved limitations in asymmetric catalysis, fine-tuned halogen-halogen interactions between the substrate and XB-donor were designed to preorganize the substrate in the catalyst's cavity and boost enantiocontrol. The present strategy exploits both the electron cloud (Lewis base site) and the sigma (σ)-hole site of the halogen substituent of the substrates to form a tight catalyst-substrate-counteranion chiral complex, thus enabling a controlled induction of high levels of chirality transfer. Remarkable enantioselectivities of up to 95 : 5 e.r. (90 % ee) have been achieved in a model dearomatization reaction of halogen-substituted (iso)quinolines with tetrakis-iodotriazole multidentate anion-binding catalysts.

Abstract
Conformational control is a key prerequisite for much molecular function. As chemists seek to create complex molecules that have applications beyond the academic laboratory, correct spatial positioning is critical. This is particularly true of flexible systems. Conformationally flexible molecules show potential because they resemble in many cases naturally occurring analogues such as the secondary structures found in proteins and peptides such as α-helices and β-sheets. One of the ways in which conformation can be controlled in these molecules is through interaction with or coordination to metal ions. This review explores how secondary structure (i.e., controlled local conformation) in foldamers and other conformationally flexible systems can be enforced or modified through coordination to metal ions. We hope to provide examples that illustrate the power of metal ions to influence this structure toward multiple different outcomes.

Abstract

Chalcogen bonding (ChB) is rapidly rising to prominence
in supramolecular
chemistry as a powerful sigma (σ)-hole-based noncovalent interaction,
especially for applications in the field of molecular recognition.
Recent studies have demonstrated ChB donor strength and potency to
be remarkably sensitive to local electronic environments, including
redox-switchable on/off anion binding and sensing capability. Influencing
the unique electronic and geometric environment sensitivity of ChB
interactions through simultaneous cobound metal cation recognition,
herein, we present the first potassium chloride-selective heteroditopic
ion-pair receptor. The direct conjugation of benzo-15-crown-5 ether
(B15C5) appendages to Te centers in a bis-tellurotriazole framework
facilitates alkali metal halide (MX) ion-pair binding through the
formation of a cofacial intramolecular bis-B15C5 M+ (M+ = K+, Rb+, Cs+) sandwich
complex and bidentate ChB···X– formation.
Extensive quantitative 1H NMR ion-pair affinity titration
experiments, solid–liquid and liquid–liquid extraction,
and U-tube transport studies all demonstrate unprecedented KCl selectivity
over all other group 1 metal chlorides. It is demonstrated that the
origin of the receptor’s ion-pair binding cooperativity and
KCl selectivity arises from an electronic polarization of the ChB
donors induced by the cobound alkali metal cation. Importantly, the
magnitude of this switch on Te-centered electrophilicity, and therefore
anion-binding affinity, is shown to correlate with the inherent Lewis
acidity of the alkali metal cation. Extensive computational DFT investigations
corroborated the experimental alkali metal cation–anion ion-pair
binding observations for halides and oxoanions.

Abstract
It is not a coincidence that both chirality and noncovalent interactions are ubiquitous in nature and synthetic molecular systems. Noncovalent interactivity between chiral molecules underlies enantioselective recognition as a fundamental phenomenon regulating life and human activities. Thus, noncovalent interactions represent the narrative thread of a fascinating story which goes across several disciplines of medical, chemical, physical, biological, and other natural sciences. This review has been conceived with the awareness that a modern attitude toward molecular chirality and its consequences needs to be founded on multidisciplinary approaches to disclose the molecular basis of essential enantioselective phenomena in the domain of chemical, physical, and life sciences. With the primary aim of discussing this topic in an integrated way, a comprehensive pool of rational and systematic multidisciplinary information is provided, which concerns the fundamentals of chirality, a description of noncovalent interactions, and their implications in enantioselective processes occurring in different contexts. A specific focus is devoted to enantioselection in chromatography and electromigration techniques because of their unique feature as "multistep" processes. A second motivation for writing this review is to make a clear statement about the state of the art, the tools we have at our disposal, and what is still missing to fully understand the mechanisms underlying enantioselective recognition.

Abstract
The σ-hole interaction represents a noncovalent interaction between atoms with σ-hole(s) on their surface (such as halogens and chalcogens) and negative sites. Over the last decade, significant developments have emerged in applications where the σ-hole interaction was demonstrated to play a key role in the control over chirality. The aim of this review is to give a comprehensive overview of the current advancements in the use of σ-hole interactions in stereoselective processes, such as formation of chiral supramolecular assemblies, separation of enantiomers, enantioselective complexation and asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract
A series of triazole-cyanostilbene receptors were designed and synthesized. The receptor binds with the anions through various CH···anion hydrogen bonding interactions, where strong binding was observed for SO42- anions followed by Cl-, Br-, NO3-, and I-, calculated from the 1H NMR titration experiment. The NOESY NMR experiment of the receptor confirmed the formation of anion-induced folded conformation. The CH···anion hydrogen bonding interaction-mediated anion recognition and foldamer formation were further confirmed from geometry optimization studies of the anion-bound complex. The receptor transports Cl- anions efficiently compared to SO42- anions across the lipid bilayer membrane via a mobile carrier mechanism.

Abstract
A series of neutral tetradentate halogen bonding (XB) macrocycles, comprising of two bis-iodotriazole XB donors were synthesised in 60-70% yields via a stepwise CuAAC-mediated cyclisation strategy. Extensive 1H NMR anion titration experiments reveal halide binding affinities are critically dependent on the substitution pattern of the xylyl spacer unit. The meta-substituted macrocycle remarkably displays cooperative tetradentate XB-halide anion recognition in highly competitive 40% aqueous-organic D2O/acetone-d6 (40 : 60, v/v) solvent mixtures. Integration of para-xylyl and naphthyl spacer units generates extended macrocyclic cavities, capable of selective oxalate recognition. Furthermore, preliminary fluorescence exeperiments reveal dicarboxylate specific sensing can be achieved through monitoring of the naphthylene centred emission.

Abstract
Anion receptors employing two distinct sensory mechanisms are rare. Herein, we report the first examples of halogen-bonding porphyrin BODIPY [2]rotaxanes capable of both fluorescent and redox electrochemical sensing of anions. 1 H NMR, UV/visible and electrochemical studies revealed rotaxane axle triazole group coordination to the zinc(II) metalloporphyrin-containing macrocycle component, serves to preorganise the rotaxane binding cavity and dramatically enhances anion binding affinities. Mechanically bonded, integrated-axle BODIPY and macrocycle strapped metalloporphyrin motifs enable the anion recognition event to be sensed by the significant quenching of the BODIPY fluorophore and cathodic perturbations of the metalloporphyrin P/P+. redox couple.

Abstract
The development of long-wavelength photoinduced copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne click (CuAAC) reaction routes is attractive for organic and polymer chemistry. In this study, we present a novel synthetic methodology for the photoinduced CuAAC reaction utilizing exfoliated two-dimensional (2D) few-layer black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs) as photocatalysts under white LED and near-IR (NIR) light irradiation. Upon irradiation, BPNs generated excited electrons and holes on its conduction (CB) and valence band (VB), respectively. The excited electrons thus formed were then transferred to the CuII ions to produce active CuI catalysts. The ability of BPNs to initiate the CuAAC reaction was investigated by studying the reaction between various low molar mass alkyne and azide derivatives under both white LED and NIR light irradiation. Due to its deeper penetration of NIR light, the possibility of synthesizing different macromolecular structures such as functional polymers, cross-linked networks and block copolymer has also been demonstrated. The structural and molecular properties of the intermediates and final products were evaluated by spectral and chromatographic analyses.

Abstract
An asymmetric Michael addition of malononitrile to vinyl phosphonates was accomplished by hydrogen bond-enhanced bifunctional halogen bond (XB) catalysis. NMR titration experiments were used to demonstrate that halogen bonding, with the support of hydrogen-bonding, played a key role in the activation of the Michael acceptors through the phosphonate group. This is the first example of the use of XBs for the activation of organophosphorus compounds in synthesis. In addition, the iodo-perfluorophenyl group proved to be a better directing unit than different iodo- and nitro-substituted phenyl groups. The developed approach afforded products with up to excellent yields and diastereoselectivities and up to good enantioselectivities.

Abstract
Halogen bonding represents a powerful tool in the field of noncovalent interactions. However, applications in enantioselective recognition and catalysis remain almost nonexistent, due in part to the distinct features of halogen bonds, including long covalent and noncovalent bond distances and high directionality. Herein, this work presents a novel chiral tetrakis-iodo-triazole structure as a neutral halogen bond donor for both chiral anion-recognition and enantioinduction in ion-pair organocatalysis. NMR-titration studies revealed significant differences in anion affinity between the halogen bonding receptor and its hydrogen bonding parent. Selective recognition of chiral dicarboxylates and asymmetric induction in a benchmark organocatalytic reaction were demonstrated using the halogen bond donor. Inversions in the absolute sense of chiral recognition, enantioselectivity, and chiroptical properties relative to the related hydrogen donor were observed. Computational modeling suggested that these effects were the result of distinct anion-binding modes for the halogen- versus hydrogen-bond donors.

Abstract
Halogen bonding has received a significant increase in attention in the past 20 years. An important part of this interest has centered on catalytic applications of halogen bonding. Halogen bond (XB) catalysis is still a developing field in organocatalysis, although XB catalysis has outgrown its proof of concept phase. The start of this year witnessed the publication of the first example of a purely XB-based enantioselective catalytic reaction. While the selectivity can be improved upon, there are already plenty of examples in which halogen bonds, among other interactions, play a crucial role in the outcome of highly enantioselective reactions. This paper will give an overview of the current state of the use of XBs in catalytic stereoselective processes.

Abstract
As a synthetic model for intra-protein interactions that reinforce binding affinities between proteins and ligands, the energetic interplay of binding and folding was investigated using foldamer-based receptors capable of adopting helical structures. The receptors were designed to have identical hydrogen-bonding sites for anion binding but different aryl appendages that simply provide additional π-stacking within the helical backbones without direct interactions with the bound anions. In particular, the presence of electron-deficient aryl appendages led to dramatic enhancements in the association constant between the receptor and chloride or nitrate ions, by up to three orders of magnitude. Extended stacking within the receptor contributes to the stabilization of the entire folding structure of complexes, thereby enhancing binding affinities.

Abstract
Even though halogen bonding-the noncovalent interaction between electrophilic halogen substituents and Lewis bases-has now been established in molecular recognition and catalysis, its use in enantioselective processes is still very rarely explored. Herein, we present the synthesis of chiral bidentate halogen-bond donors based on two iodoimidazolium units with rigidly attached chiral sidearms. With these Lewis acids, chiral recognition of a racemic diamine is achieved in NMR studies. DFT calculations support a 1:1 interaction of the halogen-bond donor with both enantiomers and indicate that the chiral recognition is based on a different spatial orientation of the Lewis bases in the halogen-bonded complexes. In addition, moderate enantioselectivity is achieved in a Mukaiyama aldol reaction with a preorganized variant of the chiral halogen-bond donor. This represents the first case in which asymmetric induction was realized with a pure halogen-bond donor lacking any additional active functional groups.

Abstract
Using anions to induce molecular structure is a rapidly growing area of dynamic and switchable supramolecular chemistry. The emphasis of this review is on helical anion foldamers in solution, and many of the beautiful complexes described herein are accentuated by their crystal structures. Anion foldamers are defined as single- or multistrand complexes-often helical-that incorporate one or more anions. The review begins by discussing foldamer structure and nomenclature and follows with discourse on the anions which are employed. Recent advances in functional foldamers that bind a single anion are examined, including: induced chirality, stimuli-responsive dynamics, fluorescence changes, organocatalysis, anion transport, and halogen bonding. The review then inspects multianion foldamers, and this section is organized by the number of strands within the foldamer-from single- to triple-strand foldamers. Finally, the review is punctuated by recent hydrogen- and halogen-bonding triple-strand anion foldamers.

Abstract
A novel strategy for the recognition of anions in water using charge-neutral σ-hole halogen and chalcogen bonding acyclic hosts is demonstrated for the first time. Exploiting the intrinsic hydrophobicity of halogen and chalcogen bond donor atoms integrated into a foldamer structural molecular framework containing hydrophilic functionalities, a series of water-soluble receptors was constructed for an anion recognition investigation. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) binding studies with a range of anions revealed the receptors to display very strong and selective binding of large, weakly hydrated anions such as I- and ReO4-. This is achieved through the formation of 2:1 host-guest stoichiometric complex assemblies, resulting in an encapsulated anion stabilized by cooperative, multidentate, convergent σ-hole donors, as shown by molecular dynamics simulations carried out in water. Importantly, the combination of multiple σ-hole-anion interactions and hydrophobic collapse results in I- affinities in water that exceed all known σ-hole receptors, including cationic systems (β2 up to 1.68 × 1011 M-2). Furthermore, the anion binding affinities and selectivity trends of the first example of an all-chalcogen bonding anion receptor in pure water are compared with halogen bonding and hydrogen bonding receptor analogues. These results further advance and establish halogen and chalcogen bond donor functions as new tools for overcoming the challenging goal of anion recognition in pure water.

Abstract
Anion-templated helical structures are emerging as a dynamic and tractable class of supramolecules that exhibit anion-switchable self-assembly. We present the first kinetic studies of an anion helicate by utilizing halogen-bonding m-arylene-ethynylene oligomers. These ligands formed high-fidelity triple helicates in solution with surprisingly long lifetimes on the order of seconds even at elevated temperatures. We propose an associative ligand-exchange mechanism that proceeded slowly on the same timescale. In contrast, intrachannel anion exchange occurred rapidly within milliseconds or faster as determined by stopped-flow visible spectroscopy. Additionally, the helicate accommodated bromide in solution and the solid state, while the thermodynamic stability of the triplex favored larger halide ions (bromide≈iodide≫chloride). Taken together, we elucidate a new class of kinetically stable helicates. These anion-switchable triplexes maintain their architectures while accommodating fast intrachannel guest exchange.

Abstract
An understanding of host-guest noncovalent interactions lies at the very heart of supramolecular chemistry. Often a minute change to the structure of a host molecule's binding site can have a dramatic impact on a prospective host-guest binding event, changing the relative selectivity for potential guest molecules. With the overall goal of aiding the rational design of selective and effective receptors for anions, we have studied the influence of small perturbations in binding site geometry for a series of five closely related 20-membered macrocyclic tetra-amide receptors, constructed from two building blocks from a pool of azulene-5,7-bisamide, azulene-1,3-bisamide, and dipicolinic bisamide units. The solid-state structures revealed that the conformational preferences of the free receptors are driven by the inherent preferences of the building blocks, yet in some cases the macrocyclic topology is able to over-ride these to promote pre-organized conformations favorable for anion binding. The solid-state structures of the chloride complexes of these receptors revealed that although all the receptors can adapt to binding to the challenging small Cl- guest with all the NH groups, only receptors containing azulene-5,7-bisamide units form short and linear, and therefore strong, hydrogen-bonding interactions. These conclusions are further supported by studies in solution. Although all the receptors showed high affinities toward a series of anions (H2 PO4- , PhCO2- , Cl- , and Br- ), even in a highly competitive polar medium (DMSO/25 % MeOH), only receptors containing azulene-5,7-bisamide units exhibited non-inherent selectivity for Cl- over PhCO2- , breaking the Hofmeister trend of selectivity. The data presented herein highlight the privileged properties of the azulene-5,7-bisamide building block for binding to chloride anions and provide guidelines for the construction of selective and efficient anion receptors with prospective practical applications.

Abstract
Tetrel atoms T (T = Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb) can engage in very strong noncovalent interactions with nucleophiles, which are commonly referred to as tetrel bonds. The ability of such bonds to bind various anions is assessed with a goal of designing an optimal receptor. The Sn atom seems to form the strongest bonds within the tetrel family. It is most effective in the context of a -SnF₃ group and a further enhancement is observed when a positive charge is placed on the receptor. Connection of the -SnF₃ group to either an imidazolium or triazolium provides a strong halide receptor, which can be improved if its point of attachment is changed from the C to an N atom of either ring. Aromaticity of the ring offers no advantage nor is a cyclic system superior to a simple alkyl amine of any chain length. Placing a pair of -SnF₃ groups on a single molecule to form a bipodal dicationic receptor with two tetrel bonds enhances the binding, but falls short of a simple doubling. These two tetrel groups can be placed on opposite ends of an alkyl diamine chain of any length although SnF₃⁺NH₂(CH₂)nNH₂SnF₃⁺ with n between 2 and 4 seems to offer the strongest halide binding. Of the various anions tested, OH− binds most strongly: OH− > F− > Cl− > Br− > I−. The binding energy of the larger NO₃− and HCO₃− anions is more dependent upon the charge of the receptor. This pattern translates into very strong selectivity of binding one anion over another. The tetrel-bonding receptors bind far more strongly to each anion than an equivalent number of K⁺ counterions, which leads to equilibrium ratios in favor of the former of many orders of magnitude.

Abstract
The halogen bond is a supramolecular interaction between a Lewis-acidic region of a covalently bound halogen and a Lewis base. It has been studied widely in silico and experimentally in the solid state; however, solution-phase applications have attracted enormous interest in the last few years. This Minireview highlights selected recent developments in halogen bond interactions in solution, with a focus on the use of receptors based on halogen bonds in anion recognition and sensing, anion-templated self-assembly, as well as in organocatalysis.

Abstract
A family of cationic halogen bonding [2]rotaxanes have been synthesised via an active-metal template synthetic strategy. 1H NMR spectroscopic anion titration investigations reveal these interlocked host systems recognize halides selectively over oxoanions in aqueous-organic solvent media. Furthermore, systematically modulating the rigidity and size of the rotaxanes' anion binding cavities via metal complexation, as well as by varying the number of halogen bond-donor groups in the axle component, was found to dramatically influence halide anion selectivity.
