Determining Excited-State Absorption Properties of a Quinoid Flavin by Polarization-Resolved Transient Spectroscopy

As important naturally occurring chromophores, photophysical/chemical properties of quinoid flavins have been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically. However, little is known about the transition dipole moment (TDM) orientation of excited-state absorption transitions of these important compounds. This aspect is of high interest in the fields of photocatalysis and quantum control studies. In this work, we employ polarization-associated spectra (PAS) to study the excited-state absorption transitions and the underlying TDM directions of a standard quinoid flavin compound. As compared to transient absorption anisotropy (TAA), an analysis based on PAS not only avoids diverging signals but also retrieves the relative angle for ESA transitions with respect to known TDM directions. Quantum chemical calculations of excited-state properties lead to good agreement with TA signals measured in magic angle configuration. Only when comparing experiment and theory for TAA spectra and PAS, do we find deviations when and only when the S0 → S1 of flavin is used as a reference. We attribute this to the vibronic coupling of this transition to a dark state. This effect is only observed in the employed polarization-controlled spectroscopy and would have gone unnoticed in conventional TA.

Fluorescent Solvatochromic Probes for Long-Term Imaging of Lipid Order in Living Cells

High-resolution spatio-temporal monitoring of the cell membrane lipid order provides visual insights into the complex and sophisticated systems that control cellular physiological functions. Solvatochromic fluorescent probes are highly promising noninvasive visualization tools for identifying the ordering of the microenvironment of plasma membrane microdomains. However, conventional probes, although capable of structural analysis, lack the necessary long-term photostability required for live imaging at the cellular level. Here, an ultra-high-light-resistant solvatochromic fluorescence probe, 2-N,N-diethylamino-7-(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-9,9-dimethylfluorene (FπCM) is reported, which enables live lipid order imaging of cell division. This probe and its derivatives exhibit sufficient fluorescence wavelengths, brightness, polarity responsiveness, low phototoxicity, and remarkable photostability under physiological conditions compared to conventional solvatochromic probes. Therefore, these probes have the potential to overcome the limitations of fluorescence microscopy, particularly those associated with photobleaching. FπCM probes can serve as valuable tools for elucidating mechanisms of cellular processes at the bio-membrane level.

N-Heteroacenes as an Organic Gain Medium for Room-Temperature Masers

The development of future quantum devices such as the maser, i.e., the microwave analog of the laser, could be well-served by the exploration of chemically tunable organic materials. Current iterations of room-temperature organic solid-state masers are composed of an inert host material that is doped with a spin-active molecule. In this work, we systematically modulated the structure of three nitrogen-substituted tetracene derivatives to augment their photoexcited spin dynamics and then evaluated their potential as novel maser gain media by optical, computational, and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. To facilitate these investigations, we adopted an organic glass former, 1,3,5-tri(1-naphthyl)benzene to act as a universal host. These chemical modifications impacted the rates of intersystem crossing, triplet spin polarization, triplet decay, and spin-lattice relaxation, leading to significant consequences on the conditions required to surpass the maser threshold.

Singlet fission dynamics modulated by molecular configuration in covalently linked pyrene dimers, Anti- and Syn-1,2-di(pyrenyl)benzene

Covalently linked dimers (CLDs) and their structural isomers have attracted much attention as potential materials for improving power conversion efficiencies through singlet fission (SF). Here, we designed and synthesized two covalently ortho-linked pyrene (Py) dimers, anti- and syn-1,2-di(pyrenyl)benzene (Anti-DPyB and Syn-DPyB, respectively), and investigated the effect of molecular configuration on SF dynamics using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies. Both Anti-DPyB and Syn-DPyB, which have different Py-stacking configurations, form excimers, which then relax to the correlated triplet pair ((T₁T₁)) state, indicating the occurrence of SF. Unlike previous studies where the excimer formation inhibited an SF process, the (T₁T₁)'s of Anti-DPyB and Syn-DPyB are formed through the excimer state. The dissociation of (T₁T₁)'s to 2T₁ in Anti-DPyB is more favorable than in Syn-DPyB. Our results showcase that the molecular configuration of a CLD plays an important role in SF dynamics.

Naphthalimide-Carbazole Compact Electron Donor-Acceptor Dyads: Effect of Molecular Geometry and Electron-Donating Capacity on the Spin-Orbit Charge Transfer Intersystem Crossing

We prepared a series of naphthalimide (NI)-carbazole (Cz) compact electron donor-acceptor dyads showing different substitution positions, C-N/C-C linkers, and conformation restriction magnitudes to study the spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC). The varied conformation restrictions lead to different dihedral angles between the donor and acceptor (37°-81°) and electronic coupling magnitude (matrix elements V: 1290-3070 cm^-1). Based on the comparison between the dyads containing C-N and C-C linkers, we found that a large dihedral angle between the donor and acceptor is favorable to efficient SOCT-ISC. For one dyad, the singlet oxygen quantum yield (Φ_Δ) is up to 84.4% (in dichloromethane), which is much higher than that of the previously reported NI-phenothiazine (PTZ) analogue dyad (Φ_Δ = 16.0% in n-hexane). The intrinsic triplet state lifetime (τ_T) is 270 μs, longer than that accessed by the heavy atom effect (75.2 μs). As compared with the NI-PTZ analogue dyad, the Cz unit in the current dyads is a weaker electron donor than PTZ. Thus, a higher CT state energy in NI-Cz dyads was observed, which makes the SOCT-ISC efficient in solvents with a wide range of polarities. Meanwhile, the localized triplet state (³LE) becomes the lowest-lying state in the NI-Cz dyads, which is different from the triplet charge transfer (³CT) state observed in the analogue NI-PTZ dyad. Moreover, the large energy gap between the CT and ³LE states inhibits the reverse ISC; as a result, no thermally activated delayed fluorescence was observed for the current NI-Cz dyads.

Tailoring the Intersystem Crossing and Triplet Dynamics of Free-Base Octaalkyl-β-oxo-Substituted Porphyrins: Competing Effects of Spin-Vibronic and NH Tautomerism Relaxation Channels

We demonstrate that β-oxo-substitution provides effective fine-tuning of both steady-state and transient electronic properties of octaalkyl-β-mono-oxochlorin and all isomers of the β,β'-dioxo-substituted chromophores. The addition of a carbonyl group increases the Qy oscillator strength and red-shifts the absorption spectra. Each oxo-substitution results in a 2-fold increase in the singlet to triplet state intersystem crossing (ISC) rates, resulting in a 4-fold ISC rate increase for the dioxo-substituted chromophores. The effects of oxo-substitution on the ISC rate are thus additive. The progressive increase in the ISC rates correlates directly with the spin-vibronic channels provided by the C═O out-of-plane distortion modes, as evidenced by density functional theory (DFT) modeling. The triplet states, however, were not evenly affected by β-oxo-substitution, and reduction in the triplet lifetime seems to be influenced instead by the presence of NH tautomers in the dioxoisobacteriochlorins.

Ultrafast sorting: Excimeric π-π stacking distinguishes pyrene-N-methylacetamide isomers on the ultrafast time scale

Pyrene based molecules are inclined to form excimers through self-association upon photoexcitation. In this work, the pyrene core is functionalized with the N-methylacetamide group at the position 1 or 2 to develop pyren-1-methylacetamide (PyMA1) and pyren-2-methylacetamide (PyMA2), respectively. Upon photoexcitation with 345 nm, a portion of molecules in PyMA1 and PyMA2 solutions at ≥1.0 mM have formed static excimers. The steady state spectroscopic measurements suggest that, whether it is the dimerization of molecules in the ground state (GS) or in excimer formation, characteristic signs are more pronounced in PyMA1 than its isomeric counterpart, PyMA2. The shift of the excimer band in their respective emission spectra suggests that the extent of overlap in π-π stacking is greater for PyMA1 than for PyMA2 in the excited state. The optimized geometry of dimers in toluene shows that the overlapping area between the pyrene moieties in π-π stacking between the dimers is greater for PyMA1 than for PyMA2 in GS. The natural bond orbital analysis with the optimized GS geometries shows that the stabilization/interaction energy between the dimers in π-π stacking is higher in PyMA1 compared to PyMA2 in toluene. The transient absorption (TA) measurements in toluene over the fs-ps regime (fs-TA) showed that the formation of static excimers with pre-associated dimers in PyMA1 happens in ∼700 fs whereas the excimers for the pre-associated dimers in PyMA2 have formed in slightly slower time scale (∼1.95 ps). Contrary to what was observed in solution, the extent of overlap in π-π stacking is lower for PyMA1 dimers (∼17%) than for PyMA2 dimers (∼37%) in single crystals.

Intersystem Crossing and Triplet-State Property of Anthryl- and Carbazole-[1,12]fused Perylenebisimide Derivatives with a Twisted π-Conjugation Framework

Heavy atom-free triplet photosensitizers (PSs) are particularly of interest concerning both fundamental photochemistry study and practical applications. However, achieving efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) in planar heavy atom-free aromatic organic compounds is challenging. Herein, we demonstrate that two perylenebisimide (PBI) derivatives with anthryl and carbazole moieties fused at the bay position, showing twisted π-conjugation frameworks and red-shifted UV-vis absorption as compared to the native PBI chromophore (by 75-1610 cm^-1), possess efficient ISC (singlet oxygen quantum yield: Φ_Δ = 85%) and a long-lived triplet excited state (τ_T = 382 μs in fluid solution and τ_T = 4.28 ms in solid polymer film). Femtosecond transient absorption revealed ultrafast intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) process in the twisted PBI derivatives (0.9 ps), and the ISC takes 3.7 ns. Pulsed laser excited time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectra indicate that the triplet-state wave function of the twisted PBIs is mainly confined on the PBI core, demonstrated by the zero-field-splitting D parameter. Accordingly, the twisted derivatives have higher T₁ energy (E_T1 = 1.48-1.56 eV) as compared to the native PBI chromophore (1.20 eV), which is an advantage for the application of the derivatives as triplet PSs. Theoretical computation of the Franck-Condon density of states, based on excited-state dynamics methods, shows that the efficient ISC in the twisted PBI derivatives is due to the increased spin-orbit coupling matrix elements for the S₁-T₁ and S₁-T₂ states [spin-orbit coupling matrix element (SOCME): 0.11-0.44 cm^-1. SOCME is zero for native PBI], as well as the Herzberg-Teller vibronic coupling. For the planar benzoPBI, the moderate ISC is due to S₁ → T₂ transition (SOCME: 0.03 cm^-1. The two states share a similar energy, ca. 2.5 eV).

Chromophore Orientation-Dependent Photophysical Properties of Pyrene-Naphthalimide Compact Electron Donor-Acceptor Dyads: Electron Transfer and Intersystem Crossing

In order to study the effect of mutual orientation of the chromophores in compact electron donor-acceptor dyads on the spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC), we prepared naphthalimide (NI)-pyrene (Py) compact electron donor-acceptor dyads, in which pyrene acts as an electron donor and NI is an electron acceptor. The connection of the two units is at the 4-C and 3-C positions of the NI unit and the 1-position of the pyrene moiety for dyads NI-Py-1 and NI-Py-2, respectively. A charge transfer absorption band was observed for both dyads in the UV-vis absorption spectra. Upon nanosecond pulsed laser excitation, long-lived triplet states (lifetime is 220 μs) were observed and the triplet state was confined to the pyrene moiety. The ISC efficiency is moderate to high in nonpolar to polar solvents (singlet oxygen quantum yield: Φ_Δ = 14-52%). Ultrafast charge separation (ca. 0.81 ps) and charge recombination-induced ISC (∼3.0 ns) were observed by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirms the SOCT-ISC mechanism; interestingly, the observed electron spin polarization pattern of the triplet state is chromophore orientation-dependent; and the population rates of the triplet sublevels of NI-Py-1 (P_x:P_y:P_z = 0.2:0.8:0) are drastically different from those of NI-Py-2 (P_x:P_y:P_z = 0:0:1).

Ambient Room Temperature Phosphorescence and Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence from a Core-Substituted Pyromellitic Diimide Derivative

Triplet harvesting under ambient conditions plays a crucial role in improving the luminescence efficiency of purely organic molecular systems. This requires elegant molecular designs that can harvest triplets either via room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) or by thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). In this context, here we report a donor core-substituted pyromellitic diimide (acceptor) derivative as an efficient charge-transfer molecular design from the arylene diimide family as a triplet emitter. Solution-processed thin films of carbazole-substituted CzPhPmDI display both RTP- and TADF-mediated twin emission with a long lifetime and high efficiency under ambient conditions. The present study not only sheds light on the fundamental photophysical process involved in the triplet harvesting of donor-acceptor organic systems, but also opens new avenues in exploring an arylene diimide class of molecules as potential organic light-emitting materials.

Ultrafast excited state relaxation dynamics in a heteroleptic Ir(iii) complex, fac-Ir(ppy)2(ppz), revealed by femtosecond X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy

The experimental and calculation results demonstrate that the ³ML_ppzCT state generated by the spin-forbidden transition rapidly relaxes to ³ML_ppyCT through internal conversion process with a time constant of ∼450 fs.

Tuning the Triplet Excited State of Bis(dipyrrin) Zinc(II) Complexes: Symmetry Breaking Charge Transfer Architecture with Exceptionally Long Lived Triplet State for Upconversion

Zinc(II) bis(dipyrrin) complexes, which feature intense visible absorption and efficient symmetry breaking charge transfer (SBCT) are outstanding candidates for photovoltaics but their short lived triplet states limit applications in several areas. Herein we demonstrate that triplet excited state dynamics of bis(dipyrrin) complexes can be efficiently tuned by attaching electron donating aryl moieties at the 5,5'-position of the complexes. For the first time, a long lived triplet excited state (τ_T =296 μs) along with efficient ISC ability (Φ_Δ =71 %) was observed for zinc(II) bis(dipyrrin) complexes, formed via SBCT. The results revealed that molecular geometry and energy gap between the charge transfer (CT) state and triplet energy levels strongly control the triplet excited state properties of the complexes. An efficient triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion system was devised for the first time using a SBCT architecture as triplet photosensitizer, reaching a high upconversion quantum yield of 6.2 %. Our findings provide a blueprint for the development of triplet photosensitizers based on earth abundant metal complexes with long lived triplet state for revolutionary photochemical applications.

Formation of excited triplet states in naphthalene diimide and perylene diimide derivatives: A detailed theoretical study

Mechanistic details of the excited triplet state formation upon photoexcitation to the low-lying singlet manifold in naphthalene diimide and perylene diimide derivatives are explored theoretically. Static and dynamic aspects of two singlets (S₁ and S₂) and six triplets (T₁-T₆) of these molecules are investigated. Suitable vibronic Hamiltonians are constructed to investigate the internal conversion dynamics in both the singlet and triplet manifolds. Computed singlet-triplet energetics, spin-orbit coupling matrix elements, and intersystem crossing rates strongly suggest an efficient intersystem crossing process involving higher triplet states (T₆, T₅, and T₄). Separate full dimensional quantum wavepacket simulations of singlet and triplet manifolds in the approximate linear vibronic model by assuming initial Franck-Condon conditions are carried out to unravel the internal conversion decay dynamics in the respective manifolds. The obtained diabatic electronic populations and nuclear densities are analyzed to illustrate the triplet generation pathways involving higher triplet states in these molecules.

Controllable Singlet-Triplet Energy Splitting of Graphene Quantum Dots through Oxidation: From Phosphorescence to TADF

Long-lived afterglow emissions, such as room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), are beneficial in the fields of displays, bioimaging, and data security. However, it is challenging to realize a single material that simultaneously exhibits both RTP and TADF properties with their relative strengths varied in a controlled manner. Herein, a new design approach is reported to control singlet-triplet energy splitting (∆E_ST ) in graphene quantum dots (GQD)/graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) by varying the ratio of oxygenated carbon to sp² carbon (γ_OC ). It is demonstrated that ∆E_ST decreases from 0.365 to 0.123 eV as γ_OC increases from 4.63% to 59.6%, which in turn induces a dramatic transition from RTP to TADF. Matrix-assisted stabilization of triplet excited states provides ultralong lifetimes to both RTP and TADF. Embedded in boron oxynitride, the low oxidized (4.63%) GQD exhibits an RTP lifetime (τ^T _avg ) of 783 ms, and the highly oxidized (59.6%) GOQD exhibits a TADF lifetime (τ^DF _avg ) of 125 ms. Furthermore, the long-lived RTP and TADF materials enable the first demonstration of anticounterfeiting and multilevel information security using GQD. These results will open up a new approach to the engineering of singlet-triplet splitting in GQD for controlled realization of smart multimodal afterglow materials.

Identification of a receiver triplet state in the ultrafast intersystem crossing of carbonylpyrenes

The near-unity triplet quantum yield of photoexcited carbonyl functionalized pyrenes is theoretically investigated. The estimated energetics of singlet-triplet manifolds and relevant spin-orbit coupling parameters strongly suggest triplet state formation via the S₁→ T₄/T₅ pathway. Quantum wavepacket dynamics of triplet manifolds within the linear vibronic coupling approach reveal that the receiver triplet state would undergo rapid internal conversion decay to the lower triplet state(s), facilitating efficient triplet generation by minimizing the reverse intersystem crossing possibilities. On the basis of these results, a unified mechanism is proposed to describe the ultrafast intersystem crossing process in these molecules.

Heavy-atom-free BODIPY photosensitizers with intersystem crossing mediated by intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer

Organic photosensitizers possessing efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) and forming long-living triplet excited states, play a crucial role in a number of applications. A common approach in the design of such dyes relies on the introduction of heavy atoms (e.g. transition metals or halogens) into the structure, which promote ISC via spin-orbit coupling interaction. In recent years, alternative methods to enhance ISC have been actively studied. Among those, the generation of triplet excited states through photoinduced electron transfer (PET) in heavy-atom-free molecules has attracted particular attention because it allows for the development of photosensitizers with programmed triplet state and fluorescence quantum yields. Due to their synthetic accessibility and tunability of optical properties, boron dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) are so far the most perspective class of photosensitizers operating via this mechanism. This article reviews recently reported heavy-atom-free BODIPY donor-acceptor dyads and dimers which produce long-living triplet excited states and generate singlet oxygen. Structural factors which affect PET and concomitant triplet state formation in these molecules are discussed and the reported data on triplet state yields and singlet oxygen generation quantum yields in various solvents are summarized. Finally, examples of recent applications of these systems are highlighted.

Structure and piezochromism of pyrene-1-carbaldehyde at high pressure

The crystal structure of pyrene-1-carbaldehyde (PA), a model polyaromatic hydrocarbon, highly luminescent in the solid state and crystallizing in the triclinic system, has been re-determined at several pressures ranging from atmospheric up to 3 GPa using a diamond anvil cell. A `multi-crystal' approach was used in crystal structure determination, significantly improving completeness of X-ray diffraction data attainable for such a low-symmetry system. The crystal structure consists of infinite π-stacks of PA molecules with discernible dimers, which resemble aggregates formed by pyrene derivatives in solution as well as in the solid state. A series of measurements showed that the average inter-planar distance between individual molecules within π-stacks decreases with pressure in the investigated range. This results in piezochromic properties of PA: a significant sample color change as well as a red-shift of fluorescence with pressure, as studied with UV-vis spectroscopy. Periodic DFT calculations allowed us to relate the variations in the crystal structure with pressure to the changes in the electronic structure of this material.

Concerted Interplay of Excimer and Dipole Coupling Governs the Exciton Relaxation Dynamics in Crystalline Anthracenes

A combined theoretical and experimental investigation into the role of concerted long- (dipole coupling) and short-range (orbital overlap mediated excimer) electronic interactions in modulating the emission of six crystalline acetylanthracenes (1-3) is reported. Friedel-Crafts acylation of anthracene rendered crystalline acetylanthracenes with discrete close packing, varied orbital overlap, and resultant distinct emission (blue-green-yellow) from cooperative excimer and dipole coupling. Time-resolved emission spectroscopy (TRES) studies and the Kasha's exciton theory based quantitative estimation of dipole coupling (mean-field approximation) substantiates the exciton dynamics in crystalline 1-3. Extension of the Kasha's exciton model beyond the traditional nearest-neighbor approach, and consistent agreement among the computed spectral shifts and TRES temporal components, corroborate a holistic approach to decipher the exciton relaxation dynamics in the molecular assembly of novel photonic materials.

Extending the scope of the carbonyl facilitated triplet excited state towards visible light excitation

A series of extended π-conjugated benzophenone analogs was synthesized through a facile Lewis-acid catalyzed Friedel–Crafts reaction in order to exploit the integral triplet state properties of benzophenone.
