Magnetic Coupling Control in Triangulene Dimers

Metal-free magnetism remains an enigmatic field, offering prospects for unconventional magnetic and electronic devices. In the pursuit of such magnetism, triangulenes, endowed with inherent spin polarization, are promising candidates to serve as monomers to construct extended structures. However, controlling and enhancing the magnetic interactions between the monomers persist as a significant challenge in molecular spintronics, as so far only weak antiferromagnetic coupling through the linkage has been realized, hindering their room temperature utilization. Herein, we investigate 24 triangulene dimers using first-principles calculations and demonstrate their tunable magnetic coupling (J), achieving unprecedented strong J values of up to -144 meV in a non-Kekulé dimer. We further establish a positive correlation between bandgap, electronic coupling, and antiferromagnetic interaction, thereby providing molecular-level insights into enhancing magnetic interactions. By twisting the molecular fragments, we demonstrate an effective and feasible approach to control both the sign and strength of J by tuning the balance between potential and kinetic exchanges. We discover that J can be substantially boosted at planar configurations up to -198 meV. We realize ferromagnetic coupling in nitrogen-doped triangulene dimers at both planar and largely twisted configurations, representing the first example of ferromagnetic triangulene dimers that cannot be predicted by the Ovchinnikov rule. This work thus provides a practical strategy for augmenting magnetic coupling and open up new avenues for metal-free ferromagnetism.

Carbon-[n]Triangulenes and Sila-[n]Triangulenes: Which Are Planar?

Using our recently suggested concept of a quasi-molecule ("tile") and, in the case of the planarity here at stake, its generalization to larger than tetratomics, we explain why carbon [n]triangulenes tend to be planar, while hybrids, where just a few or even all a- or b-type carbon atoms are silicon-substituted (sila-[n]triangulenes), tend to be planar/nonplanar when compared with the unsubstituted carbon-[n]triangulenes. Because other spin states of the parent carbon- and sila-[n]triangulenes tend to correlate with the same tiles, it is conjectured that no structural changes are expected to depend on their spin state. Other polycyclic and sila-compounds are also discussed.

Presence and absence of intrinsic magnetism in graphitic carbon nitrides designed through C-N-H building blocks

We use the first principle calculation to investigate the intrinsic magnetism of graphitic carbon nitrides (GCNs). By preserving three-fold symmetry, the GCN building blocks have been built out of different combinations between 6 components which are C atom, N atom, s-triazine, heptazine, heptazine with C atom at the center, and benzimidazole-like component. That results in 20 phases where 11 phases have been previously reported, and 9 phases are newly derived. The partial density of states and charge density have been analyzed through 20 phases to understand the origin of the presence and absence of intrinsic magnetism in GCNs. The intrinsic magnetism will be present not only because the GCNs comprising of radical components but also the \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\pi$$\end{document}π-conjugated states are not the valence maximum to break the delocalization of unpaired electrons. The building blocks are also employed to study alloys between g-\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\hbox {C}_3\hbox {N}_4$$\end{document}C3N4 and g-\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\hbox {C}_4\hbox {N}_3$$\end{document}C4N3. The magnetization of the alloys has been found to be linearly dependent on a number of C atoms in the unit cell and some magnetic alloys are energetically favorable. Moreover, the intrinsic magnetism in GCNs can be promoted or demoted by passivating with a H atom depending on the passivated positions.

Acene-Linked Zethrenes and Bisphenalenyls: A DFT Search for Organic Tetraradicals

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are of special interest due to their promising nonlinear optical and magnetic properties. A series of acene-linked zethrenes and bisphenalenyls comprising from five to nine benzene rings in the linker group have been computationally studied by the DFT UB3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) quantum-chemical modeling of their electronic structure, possible spin states, and exchange interactions. The zethrenes with octacene and nonacene linkers as well as bisphenalenyls comprising heptacene, octacene, and nonacene linker groups have been revealed to possess tetraradicaloid nature, which makes them promising building blocks for organic optoelectronic and spintronic devices. The results obtained open a way of constructing tetraradicaloid organic molecules characterized by the presence of two types of paramagnetic centers.
