Physiological Responses of Selected Vegetable Crop Species to Water Stress

The frequency of drought periods influences the yield potential of crops under field conditions. The change in morphology and anatomy of plants has been tested during drought stress under controlled conditions but the change in physiological processes has not been adequately studied in separate studies but needs to be reviewed collectively. This review presents the responses of green peas, snap beans, tomatoes and sweet corn to water stress based on their stomatal behaviour, canopy temperature, chlorophyll fluorescence and the chlorophyll content of leaves. These stress markers can be used for screening the drought tolerance of genotypes, the irrigation schedules or prediction of yield.

Effect of Water Supply on Spectral Traits and Their Relationship with the Productivity of Sweet Corns

Three super-sweet corn hybrids (Zea mays L. convar. saccharata) with different ripening characteristics were grown in three water supplies (regularly irrigated, deficit-irrigated, and unirrigated) to examine the spectral reflectance at leaf and canopy levels, leaf area index (LAI) during the stage of development and their relationship with the yield and nutritional quality. Under unirrigated conditions, the plant’s height, diameter, and weight of ears per plants, as well as total carotenoid content of kernels, decreased, SPAD values of leaves, normalized vegetation differential index (NDVI) and LAI were low. The difference in SPAD and LAI was higher between the hybrids during the silking than the tasseling period under water deficiency. Under unirrigated dry conditions, no correlation was found between SPAD, NDVI, and yield. Using deficit irrigation, SPAD measured during tasseling correlated closely with the individual husked ear and the final yields as well as the sugar and carotene contents of kernels. Under this condition, NDVI did not correlate with the yield, but LAI was correlated with the yield and its carotene content. Under deficit irrigated conditions, the 46 to 49 range of SPAD measured during tasseling predicted 23.5 to 26.7 t ha−1 depending on the hybrid, but this range predicted a yield lower by 6.4 to 10.1% during silking.

Analysis of maize canopy development under water stress and incorporation into the ADEL-Maize model

Substantial progress in modelling crop architecture has been made under optimal watering conditions; however, crop production is often exposed to water stress. In this research, we develop methods for implementing the simulation of maize (Zea mays L.) canopy architectural development under water stress using data from a maize field trial in 2006-07. Data of leaf number, leaf and internode extension were collected using non-destructive and destructive sampling at 2-3 day intervals. Water stress reduced the extension rate of organs and, therefore, their final length, the reduction being greater as severity of water stress increased. The duration of extension of organs in most phytomers was not significantly affected by water stress. Also, the rate of extension during the linear phase responded linearly to fraction of extractable soil water. An existing 3-D architectural model ADEL-Maize was revised using relationships developed in this study to better incorporate effects of water stress on organ extension and production. Simulated canopy production under three water regimes was validated by comparing predicted final leaf and internode length, plant height and leaf area to independent observations. The analysis and simulation showed that maize organ extension and final length under water stress can be adequately represented by simple linear patterns that are easily integrated into models.

Irrigation frequencies and corn (Zea mays L.) yield relation in northern Turkey

A field experiment was conducted during summer season of 2005 at the Research Station (altitude 180 m above sea level, 41 degrees 21' N and 36 degrees 15'E) Faculty of Agriculture, Ondokuz Mayis University, Samsun, Turkey. Experiment consisted of three irrigation levels and a non-irrigation level. Drip irrigation treatments consisted of three soil water deficits in the 90 cm soil profile depth was replenished to field capacity. Irrigation treatments were A: no irrigation, B: irrigation at 50% of available soil water capacity, C: irrigation at 30% of available soil water capacity, D: irrigation at 15% of available soil water capacity. The average seasonal water use values ranged from 257.14 to 285.71 mm in corn treatments. Irrigation frequencies (intervals) significantly affected corn crop yields. The average corn grain yields varied from 7.98 to 29.16 t ha(-1). The treatment D was recorded significantly higher corn grain yield 29.16 t ha(-1) compared to B (21.59 t ha(-1)); C (19.15 t ha(-1)) and A (7.98 t ha(-1)), respectively. According to research results, the maximum corn grain yield was obtained when the corn plants were irrigated at 15% of available soil water capacity to field capacity.
