Abstract
Objective This study aimed to investigate the global research status, hot topics, and prospects in the field of sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP) through bibliometric analysis. Methods The literature on SNIP was retrieved and downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection from 2002 to 2021. The bibliometric and visualisation networks of SNIP were constructed using VOSviewer 1.6.18, CiteSpace 6.1. R2, and a bibliometric online analysis platform. Results A total of 560 original articles about SNIP research were included, involving 2,457 authors from 610 institutions in 45 countries. The number of SNIP publications showed an overall rising trend, with an average annual output of 28 articles and almost 3 times as many articles published in 2020 as in 2002. The analysis of keyword burst detection indicated that EGFR mutation, malignant transformation and infection are emerging research hotspots. Moreover, EGFR mutation, KRAS mutation, malignant tumour, metallothionein 2a gene, pre-operative diagnosis, HPV-negative tumour, and expression were among the 11 key clusters of co-cited references. Conclusions This study provided a comprehensive, systematic, and objective analysis and visualised knowledge map of SNIP over the past 2 decades. In particular, current hotspots and prospective trends in the field of SNIP have been identified. These results highlight the future direction of SNIP research for rhinologists.

Abstract
Background
The sinonasal inverted papilloma is a rare benign tumor, characterized by local aggressiveness, a high rate of recurrence after surgical resection, and the possibility of malignant transformation. The aims of this study are to analyze diagnostic strategy and therapeutic modalities and to evaluate results after surgery.
Methods
We report a retrospective study, including patients operated for inverted sinonasal papilloma in our department. Preoperatively, all patients were assessed by CT scan (computed tomography), 9 of them by MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).
Results
The average age of our patients was 52 years with a male predominance. The most common symptom was unilateral nasal obstruction. The endoscopic appearance was suggestive of inverted papilloma (IP) in 75% of cases. Thirty-two patients underwent an exclusive endonasal endoscopic surgery; one patient was operated with a combined approach. Two patients underwent external approaches. A recurrence was observed in 4 patients (11%).
Conclusion
Preoperative investigation for IP is essentially based on MRI, also required in case of recurrence. Histological examination of the entire tumor is crucial to rule out an associated carcinoma. The “all endoscopic” management is not always achievable for these tumors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sinonasal oncocytic papilloma (SOP) is a rare subtype of sinonasal papilloma. There are currently few reports on its clinical features and outcomes after endoscopic surgical resection. This study aims to explore the clinical characteristics of SOP and potential factors predicting tumor recurrence through a single-center retrospective case series analysis. METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis of 69 patients who underwent endoscopic surgery of SOP from June 2012 to April 2019. The data of patients' demographics, clinical features, follow-up period, and treatment outcomes were collected. RESULTS The series includes 43 males and 26 females with an average age of 60.2 years. The tumor commonly involved the nasal cavity (n = 59; 89.4%), followed by maxillary sinus (n = 31; 44.9%), ethmoid sinus (n = 28; 40.6%), frontal sinus (n = 6; 8.7%) and sphenoid sinus (n = 6; 8.7%). The follow-up period ranged from 3 months to 96 months (mean, 34.6 months) and nine patients (13%) developed tumor recurrence during the follow-up period. Univariate analysis found that the recurrence of SOP was significantly related to tumor attachment site, Oikawa tumor stage, and histological dysplasia (p<0.05). Multivariate COX regression analysis found that Oikawa staging system (p = 0.024) and presence of dysplasia (p = 0.04) were significantly related to tumor recurrence. CONCLUSION SOP had low recurrence rate which was comparable to sinonasal inverted papilloma in the endoscopic era. Our findings also demonstrated that presence of dysplasia is an independent prognostic factor for recurrence free survival.

Abstract
Background A staging system is essential for determining the optimal surgical approach and predicting postoperative outcomes for inverted papilloma (IP). Although staging systems based on the extent to which the location is occupied by an IP have been widely used, an origin site-based classification of IP using unsupervised machine learning algorithms has recently been reported. Objective To determine the most appropriate of five staging systems for sinonasal IP by comparing recurrence rates for each stage according to each of those systems. Methods Eighty-seven patients with sinonasal IP were enrolled in the study. Their tumors were retrospectively categorized according to the Krouse, Oikawa, Cannady, and Han staging systems, which are based on the extent of IP, and the Meng system, which is based on the site of origin. The rates of recurrence for each stage of the five systems were compared. Results Seven of the 87 patients (8.0%) had recurrences during an average 45.5 months (12–138 months) of follow-up. There were significant differences in disease-free survival between the stages specified by Han and Meng (p = 0.027 and p < 0.001, respectively), but not between the stages specified by Krouse, Oikawa, and Cannady (p = 0.236, 0.062, and 0.130, respectively). Cox proportional hazard models revealed that Meng system (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 4.32, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.10–17.04) and presence of dysplasia (aHR 7.42, 95% CI 1.15–47.85) were significantly associated with recurrence. Conclusion The staging systems proposed by Han and Meng were found to be accurate in terms of tumor recurrence. We recommend use of the Han staging system before surgery and the Meng system after intraoperative identification of the origin of the tumor.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sinonasal inverted papilloma is noted for its high rate of recurrence. Staging systems aid to reduce recurrence and avoid excessive surgeries by guiding the selection of the optimal surgical approach. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of different endoscopic approaches in inverted papilloma by assessing tumor origin site and tumor volume. METHODS Krouse classification system that is based on tumor volume was used for staging; furthermore, tumor origin sites were grouped as lateral nasal wall, medial wall and other walls of maxillary sinus. The main treatment method for all patients was endoscopic sinus surgery. Endoscopic extended middle meatal antrostomy, endoscopic Caldwell-Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were the additional surgery types performed in different combinations. RESULTS Fifty-five patients (42 male) with a mean 54.9±14.4 years of age were included. 37 patients were diagnosed with advanced stage inverted papilloma (67.2 %). Recurrence was observed in 12 patients (21.8 %). In early stage lateral nasal wall origination, no recurrence was observed in the simple tumor resection group (0/10). In early stage medial wall origination, no recurrence was observed in the extended middle meatal antrostomy group (0/8). In advanced stage medial wall origination, the recurrence rates of extended middle meatal antrostomy, extended middle meatal antrostomy+endoscopic Caldwell- Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were 100.0 %, 53.8 % and 13.6 %, respectively (p=0.002). In advanced stage other walls of maxillary sinus origination, recurrence rates of extended middle meatal antrostomy+endoscopic Caldwell-Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were 20 % and 16.6 %, respectively (p=0.887). CONCLUSION Tumor origin site, tumor stage and surgery types show an impact on recurrence. Despite the fact that tumor origin site singly could lead to appropriate selection of the surgery type in most cases, tumor stage carries substantial importance in selection of surgery type for sinonasal-inverted papilloma. An operation plan regarding both tumor volume and tumor origin site may aid surgeons in selecting optimal endoscopic surgical method to avoid recurrence or excessive surgeries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The treatment of all forms of sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is a complete, wide, local resection. The main surgical purpose is to remove all diseased mucosa and mucoperiosteum, together with a cuff of normal-looking mucosa at the attachment site, followed by drilling and/or coagulation. Our aim is to present our experiences in endoscopic surgical management of IP by using attachment-oriented excision. METHODS We present 20 cases of sinonasal IP. The data collected includes the histopathological diagnosis, staging, extension of the tumor, tumor attachment site, approach to surgery, serum squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA) level, and recurrences. RESULTS All patients underwent endoscopic surgery. A Caldwell-Luc operation was required in addition to the endoscopic surgery in one case. There was one case of recurrence (5%). After the additional operation, there was no recurrence. The tumor attachment sites vary, and the case of recurrence had a wide attachment site at the primary surgery. No major intra- or post-operative complications were observed. CONCLUSION The present study shows that attachment-oriented excision for IP is useful for complete resection of IP. Surgeons should choose the surgical approach according to the location of the tumor attachment site rather than the Krouse staging system.

Abstract
Background We aimed to assess the recurrence risk of sinonasal inverted papillomas (SNIPs), based on a staging system developed according to the originating site of SNIP. Methods A total of 200 patients with SNIP were enrolled, and a staging system was developed based on the originating sites and corresponding recurrence rates of tumor in the patients. In the verification phase, 675 patients with SNIPs were enrolled as above, and the originating sites of the SNIPs were confirmed by an endoscopic sinus surgery. Cluster analysis was performed to determine the stage for each SNIP. Results Overall, 608 patients completed the study. SNIP recurrence rates for stages 1‐4 were 0 (n = 43), 4.0% (n = 420), 13.4% (n = 134), 36.4% (n = 11), respectively (total = 6.4%). Conclusions The origin site‐based classification of SNIP may aid surgeons in selecting appropriate endoscopic surgical approaches to minimize the risk of recurrence.

Abstract
Sinonasal inverted papilloma is a relatively rare disease; however, it is prevalent enough for every ENT practitioner to encounter it several times throughout medical routines. Despite the developments in experimental and clinical medicine as well as surgical techniques, our knowledge of this disease is still inadequate. With improved imaging and better diagnostic techniques, proper diagnosis and qualification for surgical approaches leave no doubt. Although the endoscopic approach seems to be the gold standard for such condition, some cases may additionally require an external approach. Regardless of the type of surgery, postoperative management is crucial for both healing and long-term follow-up. Unfortunately, the procedures are still lacking in explicit and standardized postoperative management guidelines. Moreover, an important issue is still the need for a biomarker indicative of inverted papilloma and its malignant transformation. Several particles, within the spotlight of the researchers, have been SCCA, Ki-67, Bcl-2, Wnt proteins, and many more. Nevertheless, the topic requires further investigations.

Abstract
Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SIP) is a benign tumor of the nasal cavity and sinus. SIP is characterized by aggressive malignant transformation and a high rate of recurrence. Inadequate removal of the tumor during surgery is one of the most significant contributors to SIP recurrence. A growing body of evidence suggests that molecular alteration in SIP, including human papilloma virus infections, single nucleotide polymorphisms of key genes, deregulation of signaling pathways and immunological changes, may lead to SIP occurrence and malignant transformation. However, the extent to which these molecular mechanisms contribute to SIP pathology and transformation remains unclear due to limited research. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the primary dependent factors that contribute to SIP etiology. The present article reviewed risk factors of progression and recurrence of SIP, including outdoor and industrial occupational exposure, smoking, septal deviation, SIP location, recurrent cases, stage of SIP-associated squamous cell carcinoma and choice of surgical method.

Abstract
Objectives: Sinonasal inverted papillomas (SIP) present a potential for recurrence years after the surgery, but most studies report short-term follow-up, and risk factors for recurrence are still debated. Furthermore, several classifications are described, and no consensus exists regarding which one should be used. The aims of this study were to report our long-term results, investigate for potential risk factors for recurrence, and compare the existing 8 staging systems. Methods: Over a 28-year period, 110 patients with a diagnosis of SIP were enrolled. The median follow-up time was 55.6 months. Results: In multivariate Cox regression modeling, history of previous surgery was the only variable associated with recurrence (hazard ratio = 4.91, 95% CI, 1.80-13.39). Recurrences occurred up to 60 months after the surgery. Among the 8 staging systems, none proved to be associated with recurrence. Conclusion: The only factor associated with recurrence of SIP was prior surgery, probably corresponding to an incomplete initial resection. Due to late recurrences, an extended follow-up of at least 5 years is mandatory. In the absence of a classification predicting prognosis, Krouse’s staging system should be used to homogenize studies’ report since it is the most widely used.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inverted papilloma is the most common benign tumour affecting the nose. There is a high rate of recurrence and a potential of malignant transformation. This review article aimed to identify the best available management of this pathology today. METHOD A systematic review of the current English-language literature was performed. Only original articles with a minimum follow up of one year and an average follow up of two years were included. RESULTS A total of 1385 patients from 16 case series were identified. The total recurrence rate for all patients was 11.5 per cent. Significantly lower recurrence rates were found for procedures using an attachment-oriented excision (recurrence of 6.9 per cent; p = 0.0001) and utilising frozen sections (recurrence of 7.0 per cent; p = 0.0001). CONCLUSION There is a general trend towards endoscopic surgery. There may be some benefit to the use of attachment-oriented surgery and frozen sections. Multi-centred randomised controlled trials are required.

Abstract
For treatment of a sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP), it is essential to have a definite diagnosis, to identify its origin by computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and to select the appropriate surgical approach based on the staging system proposed by Krouse. Recently, a new surgical approach named endoscopic modified medial maxillectomy (EMMM) was proposed. This approach can preserve the inferior turbinate and nasolacrimal duct. We successfully treated sinonasal IP with EMMM in a 71-year-old female patient. In this patient, the sinonasal IP originated from the entire circumference of the maxillary sinus. EMMM is not a difficult procedure and provides good visibility of the operative field. Lacrimation and empty nose syndrome do not occur postoperatively as the nasolacrimal duct and inferior turbinate are preserved. EMMM is considered to be a very favorable approach for treatment of sinonasal IP.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this work was to analyze the occurrence of inverted papilloma within the nose and paranasal sinuses, the extent of lesions and the clinical course in the patients who underwent endoscopic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between the years of 2006-2012, at the Department of Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology, 2295 patients were subjected to surgery due to paranasal sinus diseases. The material was based on their past medical histories. The analysis includes the age and gender of the patients, the type of surgery, and results of histopathological examinations. A surgical procedure covered the paranasal sinuses with lesions diagnosed in CT. The qualified patients had inverted papilloma in histopathological results. RESULTS Among 2295 patients who were operated because of chronic inflammatory changes, inverted papilloma was histopathologically diagnosed in 49 cases. In 16 patients with inverted papilloma, inflammatory changes were present on one side only, while in 33 cases inverted papilloma was confirmed histopathologically on one side. The analysis of age and gender of the study group showed that the highest occurrence of inverted papilloma was in patients over 50 years of age. In the majority of the studied cases, inverted papilloma spread in the middle nasal concha and the maxillary or ethmoid sinus. CONCLUSIONS In surgery, the endoscopic technique allows for an effective removal of inverted papilloma from the nose and paranasal sinuses. According to the authors, endoscopy is the most valuable method for post-operative monitoring of recurrent inverted papilloma.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this work was to analyze the occurrence and type of neoplasm in unilateral pathological lesions within the nose and paranasal sinuses in patients who underwent endoscopic surgery, in own material. MATERIAL AND METHODS Between 2006 and 2012 2295 patients, including 1006 women aged 15-84 and 1289 men aged 17-87, were operated on due to diseases of paranasal sinuses in the Department of Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology. The patients underwent surgery after a medical interview, physical examination, 3D CT of paranasal sinuses and laboratory tests. The removed lesions were histopathologically investigated. The studied group included the patients with only unilateral lesions and histopathologically recognized neoplastic lesion. RESULTS In the studied material, neoplastic lesions occurred in 9.8% cases, out of which 5.4% were inverted papillomas, 3.1% osteomas, and 1.5% malignant tumors. However, in the patients who were operated due to hypertrophic changes within paranasal sinuses, neoplasm was found in 1.3% cases, while inverted papilloma in 0.7%, osteoma in 0.4% and malignant tumors in 0.1%, which altogether amounts to 8 times higher occurrence of neoplastic lesions in unilateral changes. RESULTS Unilateral changes within paranasal sinuses require highly inquisitive pre-operative diagnostics, peri-operative analysis and histopathological evaluation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence and nature of unilateral pathological lesions of paranasal sinuses in patients who had endoscopic sinus surgery performed in ENT. MATERIALS AND METHODS In the years 2006-2011 endoscopic sinus surgery for unilateral pathological lesions of paranasal sinuses was performed in 1847 patients (838 women and 1009 men). The enrollment of patients was based on the findings of otolaryngological clinical and subjective examinations, assessment of the paranasal sinuses on three-dimensional CT scans, and laboratory examinations. Based on the analysis of medical history data, including gender, age, the type of surgical procedure performed, and histopathological findings the cases were finally analyzed. RESULTS Pathological lesions of the paranasal sinuses were localized on the left side in 132 (57%) patients, and on the right side in 100 (43%) patients. Of the 232 patients with unilateral pathological changes, 41.8% subjects underwent endoscopic sinus surgery for polypotic changes in the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses; 28.4% for the maxillary sinus; 10.8% for the ethmoid, maxillary and frontal sinuses; and 8.6% patients for all paranasal sinuses on one side. The number of operations of only one sinus was considerably lower: sphenoid sinus, 4.7%; ethmoid sinus, 2.2%; and frontal sinus, 1.7% patients. The histopathological analysis of unilateral pathological lesions removed by endoscopic surgery showed chronic paranasal sinusitis with polyps in 56.5% patients; chronic paranasal sinusitis in 22.8% patients; and maxillary sinus cyst was confirmed in 11.6% patients. In 5.1% patients inverted papilloma was diagnosed and in 2.2% patients the presence of osteoma was found. CONCLUSIONS Unilateral paranasal pathological lesions, leaving aside rather typical maxillary sinus cysts, require a particularly thorough pre-operative diagnosis and a precise histopathological assessment.

Abstract
Skull base inverted papilloma (IP) is an unusual entity for many neurosurgeons. IP is renowned for its high rate of recurrence, its ability to cause local destruction, and its association with malignancy. This paper is a comprehensive review of the reports, studies, and reviews published in the current biomedical literature from 1947 to September 2010 and synthesize this information to focus on its potential invasion to the base of the skull and possible intradural extension. The objective is to familiarize the clinician with the different aspects of this unusual disease. The role of modern diagnostic tools in medical imaging in order to assess clearly the limits of the tumors and to enhance the efficiency and the safety in the choice of a surgical approach is pointed out. The treatment guidelines for IP have undergone a complex evolution that continues today. Radical excision of the tumour is technically difficult and often incomplete. Successful management of IP requires resection of the affected mucosa which could be achieved with open surgery, endoscopic, or combined approach. Radio and chemotherapy were used for certain indications. More optimally research would be a multicenter randomized trials with large size cohorts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS The study group for sinonasal tumors at the Korean Rhinologic Society analyzed the results of the Korean multicenter experience for sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) surgeries. STUDY DESIGN Multicenter cohort study and retrospective analysis. METHODS In total, 939 patients diagnosed with sinonasal IP treated between 1998 and 2007 at 17 university hospitals were enrolled. Demographic data and information about previous surgeries, the origin and involved site of the tumor, the surgical approach, follow-up duration, recurrence, and the presence of malignancy were collected. There were 361 patients whose follow-up was <12 months who were excluded, and 578 patients were included for recurrence analysis. RESULTS The mean follow-up duration for recurrence analysis was 41.0 months, and 15.7% (91/578) had recurrences, with a mean time to recurrence of 32.6 months. However, the group whose follow-up was longer than 3 years had a higher chance of tumor recurrence. Patients whose IPs involved the frontal sinus or the medial wall of the maxillary sinus had higher recurrence rates. There was no significant difference in recurrence rates according to stage or surgical approach. In the T3 stage of Krouse, the T3-A stage of Furuta, and group B of the Citardi staging system, the endoscopic approach alone resulted in higher recurrence rates. CONCLUSIONS Generally, there were no significant differences in recurrence rates according to clinical stage or surgical approach. Given the rate of delayed recurrence, follow-up of >3 years is required. Moreover, surgeons should always consider combined approaches to reduce the chances of recurrence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endonasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy usually includes removal of the inferior turbinate (IT) even if it is not involved in the disease. A surgical approach is presented in which the IT is temporarily excised and then reinserted, followed by postoperative occlusion of the nose for at least 2 weeks. METHODS A retrospective case series of 12 patients with inverted papilloma (IP) of the maxillary sinus (Krouse II-III) and 2 patients with 3 mucoceles of the maxillary sinus after a Caldwell-Luc operation were reviewed. After a follow-up period of 12-80 months (28 months on average) all patients underwent endoscopy, and in four cases, additionally, an MRI was performed. RESULTS There was no recurrence of tumor or mucocele after 12-80 months. The IT and its important function for warming and humidifying the inhaled air could be preserved up to now in all 15 operated sides. The patients did not have any specific pain postoperatively and there was no postoperative bleeding. They all tolerated occlusion for 2-4 weeks. Two patients developed mucoceles due to the formation of scar tissue after endonasal tumor surgery. In three cases of endonasal endoscopic Denker operation patients reported some degree of numbness or irritation of the ipsilateral frontal teeth. CONCLUSION The IT can be preserved in endonasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy for treatment of IP without a higher incidence of tumor recurrence. Aftercare should specifically focus on preventing the development of mucoceles caused by scarring.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Inverted papillomas are benign sinonasal lesions that arise primarily from the lateral nasal wall which are characterized by their tendency to recur and propensity to be associated with malignancy. The aim of this work is to analyze our experience in the treatment of these lesions, especially through the endoscopic approach. MATERIAL AND METHOD We present 61 cases of sinonasal inverted papillomas that were treated at our hospital since 1983. The patients were studied by age, gender, site of presentation of the tumor, symptoms, radiologic studies, surgical treatment and evolution. The mean follow-up was 51 months (range 6-228 months). RESULTS Thirty eight of the patients (62%) were males and 23 females (38%). The average age was 58 years (range 22-80). The most common symptom was unilateral nasal obstruction in 91% of the cases, followed by rhinorrhea in 46%. The most frequent location was the ethmoid region in 51% of cases, followed by the maxillary sinus in 28% and the lateral nasal wall in 21% of the cases. 78% of cases had associated sinusitis and the 43% polyposis. Tumours were classified with the Krouse staging system as follows: 35% stage I, 37% stage II, 18% stage III and 8% stage IV. 37% of the patients had bony erosion in the CT scan. Six of the 42 patients treated by endoscopic procedures presented recurrence (14%), compared with 6 of the 9 patients (67%) who were treated by open approaches. The average time to the recurrence was 41 months. 17% of the patients had malignant inverted papillomas, nine of them diagnosed from the beginning as malignant neoplasies and one which became malignant during follow up. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS The endoscopic approach is the method of choice for the treatment of the majority of inverted papillomas. The close follow up of the patient for a large period of time is necessary for the early detection of recurrence and to allow for surgical salvage.
