Abstract
(1) Background: It has yet to be determined whether preoperative flexible bronchoscopy (FB) should be routinely performed in patients with peripheral lung cancer. The aim of this study was to construct a model to predict the probability of positive FB findings, which would help assess the necessity of preoperative FB. (2) Methods: A total of 380 consecutive patients with peripheral lung cancer who underwent preoperative FB were recruited for this study. A prediction model was developed through univariate and multivariate logistic regression, with predictors including gender, age, body mass index (BMI), smoking, history of chronic lung diseases, respiratory symptoms, lesion size, lesion type, lesion location in the bronchi, and lesion location in the lobe. The predictive performance of the model was evaluated by validation using 1000 iterations of bootstrap resampling. Model discrimination was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC), and calibration was assessed using the Brier score and calibration plots. (3) Results: The model suggested that male patients with respiratory symptoms, decreased BMI, solid lesions, and lesions located in lower-order bronchi were more likely to have positive FB findings. The AUC and Brier score of the model for internal validation were 0.784 and 0.162, respectively. The calibration curve for the probability of positive FB findings showed convincing concordance between the predicted and actual results. (4) Conclusions: Our prediction model estimated the pretest probability of positive FB findings in patients with peripheral lung cancers. Males and patients with lower BMI, the presence of respiratory symptoms, larger lesions, solid lesions, and lesions located in lower-order bronchi were associated with increased positive FB findings. The use of our model can be of assistance when making clinical decisions about preoperative FB.

Abstract
Adenosine (ADO) generation in the tumor microenvironment (TME) plays important roles in the promotion of tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis and in suppression of the antitumor immune response. Recently, adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity in the TME has been proposed to be a compensatory mechanism against toxic accumulation of ADO in cancerous tissues. In the present study, the expression and functional activity of ADA in cervical cancer (CeCa) tumor cells were analyzed: C33A (HPV-), CaSki (HPV + ), and HeLa (HPV + ) cells. CeCa tumor cells, as well as activated T lymphocytes (ATLs), which were used as a positive control, showed different ADA contents in the membrane and intracellularly and a strong ability to convert ADO into inosine (INO). Treatment of tumor cells with EHNA, a specific ADA inhibitor, decreased the viability of CeCa tumor cells in a dose-dependent manner. In C33A (EHNA half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) = 374 μM), CaSki (EHNA IC50 = 273.6 μM), and HeLa (EHNA IC50 = 252.2 μM) cells, EHNA strongly reversed the resistance of tumor cells to the cytotoxic effect of high concentrations of ADO; 38.82 ± 3.1%, 47.18 ± 4.7%, and 71.63 ± 6.9% of the cells were apoptotic, and 40 ± 4.8%, 52 ± 5.3% and 70 ± 6.8% of the cells had mitochondrial membrane damage, respectively. In ATLs (EHNA IC50 = 391.8 μM) treated with EHNA, 32.4 ± 4.4% were apoptotic, and 32 ± 4.3% had mitochondrial membrane damage. These results suggest that the presence and activity of ADA in CeCa tumor cells can provide protection against the cytotoxic effect of high ADO contents in the TME. Therefore, the inhibition of ADA could be a strategy for the treatment of CeCa.

Abstract
Extracellular concentration of adenosine increases in the hypoxic tumor microenvironment. Adenosine signaling regulates apoptosis, angiogenesis, metastasis, and immune suppression in cancer cells. Adenosine-induced cell responses depend upon different subtypes of adenosine receptors activation and type of cancer. Suppression of adenosine signaling via inhibition of adenosine receptors or adenosine generating enzymes including CD39 and CD73 on ovarian or cervical cancer cells is a potentially novel therapeutic approach for gynecological cancer patients. This review summarizes the role of adenosine in the pathogenesis of gynecological cancer for a better understanding and hence a better management of this disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the value of Ubiquitin specific peptidase 8 (USP8), Chitinase 3-like 1 (YKL40), Heat shock protein 90a (HSP90α), glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), neuron specific enolase (NSE) and cytokeratin fragment antiogen 21-1 (CYFRA21-1) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and serum for diagnosis in patients with peripheral lung cancer. METHODS The concentration of these markers were measured in 50 patients with peripheral lung cancer and 50 patients with benign lung diseases by using enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay methods. RESULTS There were significant differences between the peripheral lung cancer group and the benign lung disease group (P < 0.05) in the BALF of USP8, YKL40, HSP90α, CEA, NSE and CYFRA21-1. There were significant differences between the peripheral lung cancer group and the benign lung disease group (P < 0.05) in the serum of HSP90α and CEA. There were no differences in others. There were no correlation between the concentration of all markers and age, histological type, TNM stage (I-IV). There was a weak correlation between the primary foci diameters and the concentration of YKL40 in BALF. (Pearson's correlation: 0.203, P = 0.048) The diagnostic efficiencies of USP8, YKL40, HSP90α were superior to CYFRA21-1 and NSE, being lower CEA. CONCLUSION Detection of tumor markers in BALF was superior to serum specimens. The measurement of USP8, HSP90α and YKL40 in BALF had more clinical value for the diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary carcinoma.
