The use of islamic spiritual care practices among critically ill adult patients: A systematic review

Spiritual care is essential to the healthcare plans of critically ill patients and their families. However, spiritual care remains neglected and requires healthcare institutions and providers' attention to be incorporated into healthcare management plans, especially for critically ill Muslim patients and their families. To date, no review has been conducted to discuss spiritual care in adult critical care Muslim patients. Spiritual care and Holy Quran recitation have been reported to be practical non-pharmacological interventions for critically ill Muslim patients. However, there is a need for Islamic healthcare institutions and providers to pay further attention to including spiritual care in the healthcare management plans of their patients. Also, future research is recommended to test the effectiveness of incorporating spiritual care in the healthcare plans of critical care patients.

Epigenomic impacts of meditative practices

Meditative practices (MPs) are an inherent lifestyle and healing practice employed in Eastern medicine and spirituality. Integrating MPs into world mainstream medicine (WMM) requires effective empirical investigation of psychophysiological impacts. Epigenomic regulation is a probable mechanism of action that is empirically assessable. Recently, WMM-styled studies have screened the epigenomic impacts of MPs with early encouraging results. This article discusses the variety of MPs extant across three major Eastern religio-spiritual-healing traditions and their integration into WMM via the lens of epigenomic modulation. MPs unanimously report positive impacts on stress-reduction pathways, known to be epigenomically sensitive. Early high-resolution assays show MPs are potent in altering the epigenome - dynamically and by inducing long-term changes. This suggests the importance of integrating MPs into WMM.

The Impact of Listening to, Reciting, or Memorizing the Quran on Physical and Mental Health of Muslims: Evidence From Systematic Review

Objectives: Listening to or memorizing the Quran has been suggested to affect the psychosocial health and well-being of Muslims. Muslims who memorized Quran have a higher quality of life (QoL) and lower anxiety and stress. Hence, this systematic review was conducted to evaluate the studies that assessed the effect of listening to, reciting, or memorizing the Quran on physical and mental health.

Methods: This review was performed on articles published from the inception and April 2021. Databases including ProQuest, PubMed and Web of Science were searched on 19 April 2021. Keywords such as “Quran”, “al- Quran,” “al- Kareem,” “Holy Quran,” “memori,” “Tahfiz,” “Huffaz,” “listening” and “reciting” were used for databases searching. The risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane risk of bias tool and Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). Only 20 articles were included in data synthesis out of a total of 230.

Results: The findings revealed that listening to, reciting or memorizing the Quran had a favorable effect on depression, anxiety, physiologic parameters, quality of life, quality of sleep and intelligence quotient.

Conclusion: The current evidence suggests that, listening to, reciting or memorizing the Quran may be useful as an intervention to improve physical and mental health.

Improving Hemodynamic Status of COVID-19 Patients with Murottal Therapy

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is a respiratory tract infection caused by the coronavirus. Some patients with severe symptoms require hospital treatment needing oxygen support. The COVID-19 condition affects the hemodynamic status of the patient. AIM: This study aimed to analyze the effect of murottal surah Ar-Rahman therapy on the hemodynamic status of COVID-19 patients in A. Yani Islamic Hospital Surabaya. METHODS: This research design was a quasi-experiment with pre-test–post-test one group design without a control group. The population was the confirmed positive patient for COVID-19 who were treated in the Mina Room of A. Yani Islamic Hospital Surabaya from November 2020 to January 2021 with a total of 63 patients. The sample was 55 patients which were taken by purposive sampling. The variables in this study were the hemodynamic status, including blood pressure, respiration rate, heart rate, and oxygen saturation that were given murottal therapy Surah Ar-Rahman. Data were analyzed using Paired t-test and those that were not normally distributed by sign-test. RESULTS: The results of this study found that there were differences in the pre-post variables of systolic blood pressure (p = 0.000), heart rate (p = 0.000), respiration rate (p = 0.000), and oxygen saturation (p = 0.000). There was no difference in the diastolic blood pressure variable (p = 0.263). CONCLUSIONS: This study concluded that the Surah Ar-Rahman therapy murottal can be used and effective to improve hemodynamic status in conjunction with therapy from the medical team. This therapy is also very easy to use anywhere.
