Abstract
Purpose: The consumption of drugs during pregnancy without medical advice constitutes a risk for the mother and the fetus. It is a public health problem. This study aimed to assess self-medication practices among pregnant women, the most used medicines, and factors associated with this practice.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured questionnaire on pregnant women who were attending Settat health centers. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Descriptive and inferential statistics were computed using the SPSS version 19.Results: Among 364 pregnant women, 118 (32%) practiced self-medication in modern medicine. Paracetamol was the most used medication, and nausea and vomiting were the most frequent symptoms reported by self-medicated pregnant women. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that women over 30 years old were four-fold more likely to practice self-medication than the other groups [AOR: 4.19; 95% CI (1.80–9.77)]. Similarly, unemployed women [AOR: 3.93; 95% CI (0.80–19.23)], those in third trimester [AOR: 2.63; 95% CI (1.29–5.36)], multiparous [AOR: 6.03; 95% CI (3.12–11.65)], without chronic illness [AOR: 2.84; 95% CI (1.26–6.41)], without therapeutic treatment [AOR: 10.1; 95% CI (2.81–37.03)] and who have attended ANC at least once, were more likely to practice self-medication than the other groups.Conclusion: The prevalence of modern drug self-medication among pregnant women in Morocco is classified as lower. Health professionals can exert positive pressure through education and information provided during ANC about OTC medications to significantly reduce the rate of self-medication.

Abstract
To examine the prevalence, determinants and attitude towards herbal medication (HM) use in the first trimester of pregnancy in Cameroon women. Between March to August 2015, we surveyed 795 pregnant women attending 20 randomly selected urban or rural hospitals in South West Cameroon on first trimester orthodox medication (OM) and HM use. Data was obtained by interviews using structured questionnaires. First trimester HM use was reported by 293 (36∙9%) women, 76% of whom used it in combination with OM. The most frequent indication for taking HM was prevention/treatment of anaemia (26∙3%). The HM were usually self-prescribed (33∙3%) or by family (56∙2%), and obtained from the woman's own garden (69∙3%). Twenty percent of women believed that HM was always safe to take in pregnancy, compared to 69.3% for OM. Intake of HM was significantly influenced by women's opinion on OM or HM safety-the odds of taking HM was 3 time higher among women who were unsure about the safety of OM (AOR: 3∙0, 95%CI = 1∙5-6∙1), while women who thought HM were never safe or who were unsure about its safety, were 91% or 84% respectively less likely to take HM compared to women who believed HM were always safe. We identified a high prevalence of HM use and concomitant use with OM, strongly influenced by women's perception of HM and OM safety. These findings indicate the need for WHO to specifically address safety in pregnancy in its policy to integrate traditional medicine use into existing healthcare systems in Africa.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Self-medication is an important part of daily self-care, without the supervision of health professionals. It is commonly practiced by pregnant women all over the world and may result in maternal and fetal risks. Hence, this study assessed self-medication practices and associated factors among pregnant women attending Kemisie General Hospital. METHODS A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured questionnaire on pregnant women who were attending antenatal care at Kemisie General Hospital. A simple random sampling technique was employed to select the study participants. Descriptive and inferential statistics were computed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20. RESULTS Among 223 pregnant women, 60 (26.9%; 95% CI: 20.9%, 32.9%) and 111 (48.9%; 95% CI: 43%, 58%) practiced self-medication on conventional and herbal medicine, respectively. The predictors of self-medication of conventional medicine among pregnant women were prior experience to the drug (P-value: 0.00, AOR=126.04, 95% CI: 32.55-488.04) and no pervious history of abortion (P-value: 0.00, AOR=0.01,95% CI:0.002-0.04), while college educational level (P-value: 0.00, AOR=13.45,95%, CI: 3.58-50.5), history prior herbal medicine use (P-value: 0.00, AOR=9, 95% CI: 3.32-24.39), Ruta chalepensis (P-value:0.001,AOR=193.7,95% CI:8.64-4342.1) and Ocimum lamiifolium type of herb use (P-value: 0.004, AOR=12.72, 95% CI: 2.27-71.38), and 5-10km health facility distance (P-value:0.022, AOR=0.1, 95% CI: 0.01-0.73) were predictors for self-medication practice of herbal medicines among pregnant women. CONCLUSION Nearly one-third and two-third of pregnant women practiced self-medication on conventional and herbal medicine, respectively. Prior experience to the drug and no previous history of abortion associated with self-medication of conventional medicine, while college educational level, history prior herbal medicine use, Ruta chalepensis and, Ocimum lamiifolium type of herb use, and 5-10km distance were predictors for self-medication practice of herbal medicines. Improving health service coverage and awareness creation on rational medication use is recommended to prevent fetal and maternal risks.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Medicinal plant (MP) use during pregnancy is common in Africa and may have profound effects on both the mother and the developing foetus. A lack of overview complicates monitoring and regulating the use of MPs during pregnancy. AIM OF THE STUDY This systematic review analyses prevalence of use of MPs during pregnancy, regional distribution, types and prevalence, MP properties, potential health risks, and consensus of MPs use, and suggests relevant measures to mitigate negative effects on pregnancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS A search was undertaken using a range of scientific databases (Medline, Embase, African Journals OnLine, Google Scholar and Biological Abstracts), non-governmental organisations, various African universities and regulatory websites for original published and unpublished studies that assess and indicate the prevalence of use of MPs during pregnancy in Africa. Additional articles were located by exploring pertinent bibliographies, and contacting experts. RESULTS A total of 3659 MP-use studies were found, but only 303 articles received full-text assessment for eligibility and finally only 50 scientific papers were eligible for the systematic review. The prevalence of MP use by pregnant women varied widely from 2% to 100%. Twenty-eight studies (56%) specified one or more plant species used as MP during pregnancy. The major reasons for MP use were relief of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (NVP), stimulation of labour, and facilitation of childbirth. The most commonly cited MP species were Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Allium sativum L. and Cucurbita pepo L. and these were used for relief of NVP, motion sickness and as a nutritional supplement. Route of administration was most commonly oral, and few adverse effects were reported. CONCLUSIONS The use of MPs among pregnant women in Africa is prevalent, and the most commonly used plant species are not known to have harmful foetal effects during pregnancy. However, many of the MP species are poorly studied and teratogenic effects cannot be ruled out. Collaboration between healthcare providers and traditional practitioners to inform about the safe use of MPs may promote safer pregnancies and better health for mothers and infants.

Abstract
Background: Self-medication has been increasing in many developing and developed countries. Its use during pregnancy presents a major challenge due to potential undesirable effects on mother and the fetus. So the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of self-medication and contributing factors, among pregnant women. Methodology: Institution based cross sectional study was conducted among 244 pregnant women attending antenatal care at Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital and Jugal Hospital from February to March, 2017. A structured questionnaire based interview was used to collect data from each study subject. Then, data were categorized and analyzed using SPSS version 20 software. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the significance of the association between the outcome and independent variables. P-value <0.05 was considered as a statistically significant in multivariate analysis. Results: The prevalence of self-medication during current pregnancy was 69.4%; out of which, 40.6% uses only herbal medicines to self-medicate. Time saving (50.7%) and prior experience of the drug (25.35%) were the main reasons for self-medication using conventional medicines while fewer side effects (59.86%) and effectiveness (35.92%) were the common reasons for self-medication using herbal medicines. Common cold and headache were among the common indications for self-medication. Friends (28.17%) and the pharmacist/druggist (23.94%) were the commonest source of information for conventional medicines while family/friends (69.72%) and neighbors (26.76%) were the common source of information for herbal medicines. Community drug retail outlets and neighbors were the commonly used sources of conventional medicines; while market place and self-preparation were the common sources of herbal medicines. Previous history of self-medication was significantly associated (P < 0.05) with current self-medication with conventional drugs and being a farmer by occupation and poor monthly income were significantly associated with herbal medicine use during pregnancy (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of self-medication during pregnancy was very high in this study which showed a need for public trainings for all women of reproductive age about the risks of inappropriate self-medication.
