Influence of Ion Nitriding on Microstructure and Properties of Haynes 282 Nickel Superalloy Specimens Produced Using DMLS Technique

The paper investigates the influence of the ion-nitriding process on the microstructure, corrosion resistance, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures of Haynes 282 nickel superalloy specimens produced by the Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technique. The study was performed for two conditions, i.e., as-built by DMLS method and as-built by DMLS method + covered by a layer containing CrN + Cr₂N phases. An analysis of the surface morphology revealed that the ion-nitriding process significantly affects the physical and chemical phenomena occurring on the specimen's surface. The XRD measurement of the specimens showed that preparing them with the DMLS method as well as following a nitriding process produced residual tensile stresses. Based on the measurement of the nanohardness distribution through the layer approximatively of 7 μm in width and the superalloys substrate, the results of the nanohardness showed the maximum values of 27 GPa and 13.5 GPa for the nitrided layer and the substrate, respectively. The surface protection from the nitrided layer proved a positive effect on the corrosion resistance of the DMLS specimens in the solution of 0.1 M Na₂SO₄ + 0.1 M NaCl at room temperature. The results of the tensile tests at 750 °C showed that the ion-nitriding process did not significantly affect the elevated-temperature tensile strength of the superalloy specimens produced with the DMLS technique.

Microstructure and Mechanical Characterization of Novel Al2O3-(NiAl-Al2O3) Composites Fabricated via Pulse Plasma Sintering

The scientific goal of this paper is to study and explain the relationship between the microstructure of a ceramic-intermetallic composite fabricated by consolidating a mixture of Al₂O₃ and NiAl-Al₂O₃ using the PPS technique and its basic mechanical properties. Six series of composites were manufactured. The obtained samples differed in the sintering temperature and content of compo-powder. The base powders, compo-powder, and composites were investigated using SEM equipped with an EDS and XRD. Hardness tests and K_IC measurements were applied to estimate the mechanical properties of the fabricated composites. The wear resistance was evaluated using a "ball-on-disc" method. The results demonstrate that the density of the obtained composites increases with the increased temperature of the sintering. The content of NiAl + 20 wt.% Al₂O₃ did not have a determining effect on the hardness of the manufactured composites. The highest hardness, contacting 20.9 ± 0.8 GPa, was found for the composite series sintered at 1300 °C and 2.5 vol.% of compo-powder. The highest K_IC value from all the studied series equaled 8.13 ± 0.55 MPa·m^0.5 and was also achieved for the series manufactured at 1300 °C (2.5 vol.% of compo-powder). The average friction coefficient during the ball-friction test with the Si₃N₄ ceramic counter-sample was between 0.8 and 0.95.

Comparison Study of PVD Coatings: TiN/AlTiN, TiN and TiAlSiN Used in Wood Machining

In this paper, we analyze the possibilities of the protection of tools for wood machining with PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) hard coatings. The nanolayered TiN/AlTiN coating, nanocomposite TiAlSiN coatings, and single layer TiN coating were analyzed in order to use them for protection of tools for wood machining. Both nanostructured coatings were deposited in an industrial magnetron sputtering system on the cutting blades made of sintered carbide WC-Co, while TiN single layer coating was deposited by evaporation using thermionic arc. In the case of TiN/AlTiN nanolayer coatings the thickness of the individual TiN and AlTiN layer was in the 5-10 nm range, depending on the substrate vertical position. The microstructure and chemical composition of coatings were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) method. Additionally, in the case of the TiN/AlTiN coating, which was characterized by the best durability characteristics, the transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods were applied. The coatings adhesion to the substrate was analyzed by scratch test method combined with optical microscopy. Nano-hardness and durability tests were performed with uncoated and coated blades using chipboard. The best results durability characteristics were observed for TiN/AlTiN nanolayered coating. Performance tests of knives protected with TiN and TiAlSiN hard coatings did not show significantly better results compared to uncoated ones.

Diethylstilbestrol-linked cytotoxic agents: synthesis and binding affinity for estrogen receptors

The syntheses of diethylstilbestrol derivatives with a C4 side chain at the double bond bearing various functional and potentially alkylating groups (9-25, 38-40, 43, 44) as well as the coupling product with daunorubicin (41) are described. Derivatives with free phenolic groups show easy isomerization to (Z)-stilbenes and styrenes, which could be minimized with silyl protecting groups. Estrogen receptor binding is decreased by polar groups such as carboxylic acids (10) as well as sterically demanding substituents.
