Effects of stem training on the physiology, growth, and yield responses of indeterminate tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants grown in protected cultivation

The lower yield of tomatoes grown in tunnels, due to the limited space, remains a challenge. Stem training has long been identified as one of the most important horticultural practices used to improve the yield and fruit quality of tomatoes grown in commercial tunnels; however, there is little information available on the dome-shaped tunnels that are used, particularly by smallholder farmers. The common stem-training methods used in tunnels include the Single-Stem (SS), the Double-Stem (DS) and the Two-Plants-per-Pot (TPP) methods. Their effect on the plants' growth, development and physiology varies significantly, and hence, it affects crop productivity. The experiment was conducted in an 8 m × 30 m dome-shaped tunnel and the treatment included the single-stem, double-stem and two-plants-per-pot methods. A higher photosynthetic rate was observed in the SS treatment, followed by the DS treatment. Similar trends were found in the growth, yield and fruit quality parameters of the SS and DS treatments. However, the DS and TPP treatments exhibited, on average, a higher number of fruits, as well as a higher colour index, TSS, TA and Brima per harvest, than the SS treatment. The study indicated that the double-stem and two-plants-per-pot training methods are the best for farmers who seek to optimize their yields and maximize their profits for this cultivar.

Phosphorus application improves grain yield in low phytic acid maize synthetic populations

Maize mutants with low phytic acid have a compromised overall agronomic performance that results in low yields. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of P (18, 26 and 34 mg/kg) on the agronomic performance of low and high phytic acid (LPA and HPA) maize synthetic populations of tropical origin, compared to two commercial hybrids (SC701 and LS8520). Subsequently, a germination test was performed on the seeds produced from the different levels of P fertilizer application rates. The germination test was conducted in the laboratory, using a germination paper towel, while the agronomic study was conducted in a controlled environment. The measured parameters included days to 50% flowering, plant height, and grain yield, as well as the final germination and germination velocity index. The results found that the grain yield increased by 1.30, 0.51, 2.41 and 1.87 t/ha in LPA, HPA, SC701 and LS8520, from the application of 18–26 mg/kg of P, respectively. However, there were non-significant differences (p > 0.05) in the grain yields of all varieties at a P application of 26 and 34 mg/kg. The final germination increased by 4% and 2% in LPA and LS8520, respectively, with the increase in the P application rate being from 18 to 26 mg/kg. However, no significant differences (p > 0.05) were found in the final germination percentage of all varieties at 26 mg/kg of P. This study indicated that the optimum application of P at planting enhances the overall performance of the LPA maize synthetic population to a level that is comparable to commercially-grown varieties.

Postharvest quality and bioactive properties of tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) stored in a low-cost and energy-free evaporative cooling system

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of low cost evaporative cooling system on the quality of two tomato cultivars, namely, 9065 jam and round tomatoes. Both the tomato cultivars were harvested from a smallholder farmer's field at Umsinga and stored for 20 days in one of the three storage conditions namely; cold room (CR), room temperature (RT) and evaporative cooling system (ECS) and sampling done every 5 days. The tomato samples were laid out as a factorial design with four replications. Results obtained proved that the storage conditions and storage period had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on the lycopene content (LC), antioxidants, total phenolic content (TPC) and ascorbic acid (AA) of the tomato samples. A decreasing trend with storage time was observed for antioxidants and TPC for both the cultivars whilst there was an increasing trend of AA and lycopene content on both the cultivars stored in the different storage conditions. Ascorbic acid was highest in samples stored in RT (0.173 mg/100g for round tomatoes; 0.172 mg/100g for 9065 jam tomatoes), second highest in samples stored under ECS (0.16 mg/100g for round; 0.17 mg/100g for 9065 jam) and lowest in samples inside the CR (0.11 mg/100g; 0.12 mg/100g for 9065 jam). Lycopene content was highest in samples stored in RT (45.31 mg/100g for round tomatoes; 52.9 mg/100g for 9065 jam tomatoes) second highest in samples stored under ECS (32.46 mg/100g for round tomatoes; 42.98 mg/100g for 9065 jam tomatoes) and lowest in samples inside the CR (14.16 mg/100g for round tomatoes; 8.79 mg/100g for 9065 jam tomatoes). Total phenolic content was highest in samples stored in CR (0.17 mg/100g GAE for round tomatoes; 0.19 mg/100g GAE for 9065 jam tomatoes) second highest in samples stored under ECS (0.124 mg/100g GAE for round tomatoes; 0.126 mg/100g GAE for 9065 jam tomatoes) and lowest in samples inside the RT (0.11 mg/100g GAE for round tomatoes; 0.12 mg/100g GAE for 9065 jam tomatoes). Antioxidant activities were highest in samples stored in CR (2.05 mg/100g for round tomatoes; 2.03 mg/100g for 9065 jam tomatoes), followed by samples stored under ECS (1.82 mg/100g for round tomatoes; 1.96 mg/100g for 9065 jam tomatoes) and lowest in samples inside the RT (1.02 mg/100g for round tomatoes; 1.07 mg/100 g for 9065 jam tomatoes). The correlation relationship among cultivars was positive and PCA proved that the cultivars were similar. Although CR provided the best storage condition for the investigated parameters, the results provided sufficient evidence that ECS can be the best method to increase shelf life in rural communities due to its association with cost reduction.

Investigating the involvement of ABA, ABA catabolites and cytokinins in the susceptibility of 'Nules Clementine' mandarin to rind breakdown disorder

BACKGROUND

'Nules Clementine' mandarin was used to investigate the potential involvement of endogenous plant hormones in mediating citrus fruit susceptibility to rind breakdown disorder (RBD). The effect of light exposure (namely canopy position and bagging treatments) on the endogenous concentration of ABA, 7'-hydroxy-abscisic acid (7-OH-ABA), ABA-glucose ester (ABA-GE) and dihydrophaseic acid (DPA), and t-zeatin was tested using four preharvest treatments: outside, outside bagged, inside and inside bagged. Phytohormones concentration was evaluated during nine weeks of postharvest storage at 8 °C.

RESULTS

The shaded fruit inside the canopy had the highest RBD score (0.88) at the end of postharvest storage, while sun-exposed fruit had the lowest score (0.12). Before storage, ABA concentration was lowest (462.8 µg kg^-1 ) for inside fruit, and highest in outside bagged fruit (680.5 µg kg^-1 ). Although ABA concentration suddenly increased from the third week, reaching a maximum concentration of 580 µg kg^-1 at week 6 in fruit from inside position, it generally reduced 1.6-fold ranging from 240.52 to 480.65 µg kg^-1 throughout storage. The increase of 7-OH-ABA was more prominent in fruit from inside canopy. Overall, the concentration of ABA-GE increased three-fold with storage time. DPA concentration of bagged fruit from inside canopy position was significantly higher compared to outside fruit. The lower ABA-GE and higher DPA concentration in inside bagged fruit throughout storage also coincided with higher RBD.

CONCLUSION

The strong positive correlations between 7-OH-ABA, DPA and RBD incidence demonstrated that these ABA catabolites could be used as biomarkers for fruit susceptibility to the disorder. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Drought tolerance of selected bottle gourd [Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl.] landraces assessed by leaf gas exchange and photosynthetic efficiency

Successful cultivation of bottle gourd in arid and semi-arid areas of sub-Saharan Africa and globally requires the identification of drought tolerant parents for developing superior genotypes with increased drought resistance. The objective of this study was to determine the level of drought tolerance among genetically diverse South African bottle gourd landraces based on leaf gas exchange and photosynthetic efficiency and identify promising genotypes for breeding. The responses of 12 bottle gourd landraces grown in glasshouse under non-stressed (NS) and drought-stressed (DS) conditions were studied. A significant genotype x water regime interaction was observed for gs, T, A, A/C_i, IWUE, WUE_ins, F_m', F_v'/F_m', Ф_PSII, qP, qN, ETR, ETR/A and AES indicating variability in response among the studied bottle gourd landraces under NS and DS conditions. Principal component analysis identified three principal components (PC's) under drought stress condition contributing to 82.9% of total variation among leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters measured. PC1 explained 36% of total variation contributed by gs, T, F₀', F_m', F_v'/F_m' and qN, while PC2 explained 28% of the variation and highly correlated with A, A/C_i, IWUE, WUE_ins ETR/A and AES. PC3 explained 14% of total variation contributed by Ф_PSII, qP and ETR. Principal biplot analysis allowed the identification of drought tolerant genotypes such as BG-27, BG-48, BG-58, BG-79, BG-70 and BG-78 which were grouped based on high gs, A, F_m'F_v'/F_m', qN, ETR/A and AES under DS condition. The study suggests that the identified physiological traits could be useful indicators in the selection of bottle gourd genotypes for increased drought tolerance.
