Ligilactobacillus salivarius functionalities, applications, and manufacturing challenges

Ligilactobacillus salivarius is a lactic acid bacteria that has been gaining attention as a promising probiotic. Numerous strains exhibit functional properties with health benefits such as antimicrobial activity, immunological effects, and the ability to modulate the intestinal microbiota. However, just a small number of them are manufactured at an industrial scale and included in commercial products. The under exploitation of L. salivarius strains that remain in the freezer of companies is due to their incapacity to overcome the environmental stresses induced by production and stabilization processes.The present study summarizes the functionalities and applications of L. salivarius reported to date. It aims also at providing a critical evaluation of the literature available on the manufacturing steps of L. salivarius concentrates, the bacterial quality after each step of the process, and the putative degradation and preservation mechanisms. Here, we highlight the principal issues and future research challenges for improving the production and long-term preservation at the industrial scale of this microorganism, and probably of other probiotics.Key points• L. salivarius beneficial properties and commercialized products.• Production conditions and viability of L. salivarius after stabilization processes.• Prospects for identifying preservation mechanisms to improve L. salivarius stability.

Striatal Neurons Expressing D1 and D2 Receptors are Morphologically Distinct and Differently Affected by Dopamine Denervation in Mice

The loss of nigrostriatal dopamine neurons in Parkinson’s disease induces a reduction in the number of dendritic spines on medium spiny neurons (MSNs) of the striatum expressing D₁ or D₂ dopamine receptor. Consequences on MSNs expressing both receptors (D₁/D₂ MSNs) are currently unknown. We looked for changes induced by dopamine denervation in the density, regional distribution and morphological features of D₁/D₂ MSNs, by comparing 6-OHDA-lesioned double BAC transgenic mice (Drd1a-tdTomato/Drd2-EGFP) to sham-lesioned animals. D₁/D₂ MSNs are uniformly distributed throughout the dorsal striatum (1.9% of MSNs). In contrast, they are heterogeneously distributed and more numerous in the ventral striatum (14.6% in the shell and 7.3% in the core). Compared to D₁ and D₂ MSNs, D₁/D₂ MSNs are endowed with a smaller cell body and a less profusely arborized dendritic tree with less dendritic spines. The dendritic spine density of D₁/D₂ MSNs, but also of D₁ and D₂ MSNs, is significantly reduced in 6-OHDA-lesioned mice. In contrast to D₁ and D₂ MSNs, the extent of dendritic arborization of D₁/D₂ MSNs appears unaltered in 6-OHDA-lesioned mice. Our data indicate that D₁/D₂ MSNs in the mouse striatum form a distinct neuronal population that is affected differently by dopamine deafferentation that characterizes Parkinson’s disease.

Existence of a sex pheromone in Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae): II. Electrophysiological correlates

The stimulus provided by a copulating pair of Triatoma infestans significantly affects the electrical activity of the nervous system of Triatoma infestans. Electrophysiological recordings were performed on stationary adult males presented with stimuli of an air current carrying odors from males, females, non-copulating pairs and mating pairs. The electrophysiological response was characterized by the low frequency occurrence of biphasic compound impulses. A significant increase in the frequency of the impulses occurred in stationary males when exposed to air currents of mating pairs, when compared to that evoked by a clean air stream. Analysis of the time course of the assays, showed that the electrophysiological activity during the copula was higher than prior to or after copula. The electrophysiological evidence presented here strongly supports the existence of pheromone(s) released by one or both sexes during mating and which is perceived by male chemoreceptors located on the antennae.

Dynamics of serum potassium change during acute respiratory alkalosis

In summary, one should be aware that hyperventilation and hypokalaemia occur frequently in the operating room under ordinary clinical conditions. An awareness of the rapidity with which these changes occur, and their extent as well as their potential hazards, should cause consideration of more aggressive attempts to maintain normocarbia and to use supplemental potassium during anaesthesia, particularly in patients with cardiac disease.
