Home and wild food procurement were associated with improved food security during the COVID-19 pandemic in two rural US states

Both food insecurity and home and wild food procurement (HWFP), including gardening, increased in many countries during the COVID-19 pandemic; yet little evidence has demonstrated what impact HWFP had on food security. Using data from a representative sample of nearly 1000 residents in the two most rural US states (Vermont and Maine) conducted via an online survey in Spring/Summer 2021, as well as matching techniques, we compare food security outcomes among households who did and did not participate in HWFP in the first year of the pandemic. Nearly 60% of respondents engaged in HWFP in some way during the first year of the pandemic, with food insecure households more likely to do HWFP. Furthermore, HWFP early in the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with improved food security in the 9-12 months later, though these improvements were primarily associated with newly, not chronically, food insecure households. Newly and chronically food insecure households were more likely to want to continue these activities in the future, but also exhibited greater barriers to land access and costs associated with these activities. These results suggest that HWFP may provide food security improvements for certain households that utilize them, especially during crisis situations. Future research about HWFP should continue to explore multiple HWFP strategies, their barriers, and their potentially myriad relationships to food security, diet, and health outcomes, especially with longitudinal data.

A Mixed-Methods Approach to the Development of a Disaster Food Security Framework

BACKGROUND

Limited research on food systems and food insecurity (FI) following disasters finds contextual differences in post-disaster food systems that shape dimensions of FI. Measurement limitations make it difficult to address FI and develop effective practices for disaster-affected communities.

OBJECTIVE

To develop, validate, and test a Disaster Food Security Framework (DFSF).

DESIGN

Mixed-methods approach was used, including in-depth interviews to understand lived experiences during disasters; expert panel input to validate DFSF designed using responses from in-depth interviews; and quantitative testing of robustness of DFSF using the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic as a disaster example.

PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING

The in-depth interviews included participants from Vermont (n = 5), North Carolina (n = 3), and Oklahoma (n = 2) who had been living in those states during Hurricane Irene (2011), Hurricane Florence (2018), the Moore tornadoes (2013), and coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic (2020). The expert panel consisted of researchers and practitioners from different US geographical regions and food-related disciplines (n = 18). For the quantitative testing survey, data from 4 US states (New York, New Mexico, Vermont, and Maryland; n = 3,228) from the National Food Access and COVID Research Team was used.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

The outcomes from the in-depth interviews were dimensions of disaster FI, those from the expert panel was a content validity ratio, and those from the quantitative testing was the number of items and components to be included.

ANALYSES PERFORMED

Inductive and deductive reasoning were using when reporting on the in-depth interviews and expert panel results, including frequencies. The quantitative testing was conducted using multiple correspondence analysis.

RESULTS

The in-depth interviews revealed four dimensions of FI: availability (supply and donation), accessibility (economic, physical, and social), acceptability (preference and health), and agency (infrastructure and self-efficacy). The panel of experts reported high content validity for the DFSF and its dimensions (content validity ratio >0.42), thus giving higher credibility to the DFSF. Multiple correspondence analysis performed on 25 food-related variables identified one component with 13 indicators representing three of the four dimensions: availability, acceptability, and accessibility, but not agency.

Ecological Economics Beyond Markets

Non-market practices and institutions make up much of every economy. Even in today's most developed capitalist societies, people produce things that are not for sale and allocate them through sharing, gifts, and redistribution rather than buying and selling. This article is about why and how ecological economists should study these non-market economies. Historically, markets only emerge when states forcibly create them; community members do not tend to spontaneously start selling each other goods and services. Markets work well for coordinating complex industrial webs to satisfy individual tastes, but they are not appropriate for governing the production or distribution of entities that are non-rival, non-excludable, not produced for sale, essential need satisfiers, or culturally important. Moreover, we argue, markets do not serve justice, sustainability, efficiency, or value pluralism, the foundations of ecological economics. We sketch an agenda for research on economic practices and institutions without markets by posing nine broad questions about non-market food systems and exploring the evidence and theory around each. By ignoring and demeaning non-market economies, researchers contribute to creating markets' dominance over social life. Observing, analyzing, theorizing, supporting, promoting, creating, and envisioning non-market economies challenges market hegemony.

Viability of equine embryos after puncture of the capsule and biopsy for preimplantation genetic diagnosis

The equine embryo possesses a capsule that is considered essential for its survival. We assessed viability after breaching the capsule of early (Day 6) and expanded (Day 7 and 8) equine blastocysts by micromanipulation. The capsule was penetrated using a Piezo drill, and trophoblast biopsy samples were obtained for genetic analysis. Pregnancy rates for Day-6 embryos, which had intact zonae pellucidae at the time of recovery, were 3/3 for those biopsied immediately after recovery and 2/3 for those biopsied after being shipped overnight under warm (∼28 °C) conditions. The pregnancy rates for encapsulated Day-7 expanded blastocysts were 5/6 for those biopsied immediately and 5/6 for those biopsied after being shipped overnight warm. Two of four encapsulated Day-8 blastocysts, 790 and 1350 μm in diameter, established normal pregnancies after biopsy. Nine mares were allowed to maintain pregnancy, and they gave birth to nine normal foals. Biopsied cells from eight embryos that produced foals were subjected to whole-genome amplification. Sex was successfully determined from amplified DNA in 8/8 embryos. Identification of disease-causing mutations matched in the analyses of 6/6 samples for the sodium channel, voltage-gated, type IV, alpha subunit (SCN4A) gene and in 6/7 samples for the peptidylprolyl isomerase B (PPIB) gene, in embryo-foal pairs. Thus, the capsule of the equine embryo can be breached without impairing viability. Further work is needed to determine whether this breach is transient or permanent. These findings are relevant to the understanding of equine embryo development and to the establishment of methods for micromanipulation and embryo cryopreservation in this species.

Surgical gloves--a comparative study of the incidence and site of punctures

Five surgical teams in two operating suites were studied for three months with random allocation to receive either A or B operating gloves. The gloves were identified as used by the surgeon, the assistant and the scrub nurse. At the end of each day the gloves were tested by standard air insufflation and immersion under water. Surgeons experienced significantly more punctures 174:884 (19.7%) [17%-23%] than the scrub nurses or assistants 161:1770 (9.4%) [8.6%-10.2%]. Surgeons were particularly prone to experience punctures of the tip of the index or little finger of the left hand whereas nurses were more likely to experience punctures of the index finger and thumb of the left hand. There was a wide variation between the five surgical teams varying between 5.7% [2%-11%] and 37.5% [24%-52%] wearing B and 11.4% and 28.4% wearing A. There were significantly more punctures when wearing A gloves (23.0%) [20%-26%] than when wearing B gloves (15.8%) [13%-19%] for surgeons but no significant difference for surgical assistants or scrub nurses. Contrary to our expectation there were no significant differences between the two types in the tearing of cuffs (1% in each).

Genetic exchange across a paracentric inversion of the mouse t complex

Mouse t haplotypes are distinguished from wild-type forms of chromosome 17 by four nonoverlapping paracentric inversions which span a genetic distance of 20 cM. These inversion polymorphisms are responsible for a 100-200-fold suppression of recombination which maintains the integrity of complete t haplotypes and has led to their divergence from the wild-type chromosomes of four species of house mice within which t haplotypes reside. As evidence for the long period of recombinational isolation, alleles that distinguish all t haplotypes from all wild-type chromosomes have been established at a number of loci spread across the 20-cM variant region. However, a more complex picture emerges upon analysis of other t-associated loci. In particular, "mosaic haplotypes" have been identified that carry a mixture of wild-type and t-specific alleles. To investigate the genetic basis for mosaic chromosomes, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of eight t complex loci within 76 animals representing 10 taxa in the genus Mus, and including 23 previously characterized t haplotypes. Higher resolution restriction mapping and sequence analysis was also performed for alleles at the Hba-ps4 locus. The results indicate that a short tract of DNA was transferred relatively recently across an inversion from a t haplotype allele of Hba-ps4 to the corresponding locus on a wild-type homolog leading to the creation of a new hybrid allele. Several classes of wild-type Hba-ps4 alleles, including the most common form in inbred strains, appear to be derived from this hybrid allele. The accumulated data suggest that a common form of genetic exchange across one of the four t-associated inversions is gene conversion at isolated loci that do not play a role in the transmission ratio distortion phenotype required for t haplotype propagation. The implications of the results pose questions concerning the evolutionary stability of gene complexes within large paracentric inversions and suggest that recombinational isolation may be best established for loci residing within a short distance from inversion breakpoints.
