Control of motivation for sucrose in the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus by dynorphin peptides and the kappa opioid receptor

The dynorphin peptides are the endogenous ligands for the kappa opioid receptor (KOR) and regulate food intake. Administration of dynorphin-A1-13 (DYN) in the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus (PVN) increases palatable food intake, and this effect is blocked by co-administration of the orexin-A neuropeptide, which is co-released with DYN in PVN from neurons located in the lateral hypothalamus. While PVN administration of DYN increases palatable food intake, whether it increases food-seeking behaviors has yet to be examined. We tested the effects of DYN and norBNI (a KOR antagonist) on the seeking and consumption of sucrose using a progressive ratio (PR) and demand curve (DC) tasks. In PVN, DYN did not alter the sucrose breaking point in the PR task nor the elasticity or intensity of demand for sucrose in the DC task. Still, DYN reduced the delay in obtaining sucrose and increased licks during sucrose intake in the PR task, irrespective of the co-administration of orexin-A. In PVN, norBNI increased the delay in obtaining sucrose and reduced licks during sucrose intake in the PR task while reducing elasticity but not intensity of demand in the DC task. However, subcutaneous norBNI reduced the breaking point for sucrose and increased the delay in obtaining sucrose in the PR task while reducing the elasticity of demand. Together, these data show different effects of systemic and PVN blockade of KOR on food-seeking, consummatory behaviors, and incentive motivation for sucrose and suggest that KOR activity in PVN is necessary but not sufficient to drive seeking behaviors for palatable food.

Meta-analysis of pre-clinical studies on the effects of opioid receptor ligands on food intake, motivation, and choice

The opioid receptors (OR) regulate food intake. Still, despite extensive pre-clinical research, the overall effects and individual contribution of the mu (MOR), kappa (KOR), and delta (DOR) OR subtypes to feeding behaviors and food intake remain unclear. To address this, we conducted a pre-registered systematic search and meta-analysis of rodent dose-response studies to evaluate the impact of central and peripheral administration of non-selective and selective OR ligands on intake, motivation, and choice of food. All studies had a high bias risk. Still, the meta-analysis confirmed the overall orexigenic and anorexigenic effects of OR agonists and antagonists, respectively. Our results support a larger orexigenic role for central MOR agonists among OR subtypes and that peripheral OR antagonists reduce motivation for and intake of preferred foods. In binary food choice studies, peripheral OR agonists selectively increase the intake of fat-preferred foods; in contrast, they did not increase the intake of sweet carbohydrate-preferred foods. Overall, these data support that OR regulation of intake, motivation, and choice is influenced by food macronutrient composition.

High-throughput RNA sequencing transcriptome analysis of ABC-DLBCL reveals several tumor evasion strategies

Activated B-cell (ABC) lymphoma, a distinct molecular entity within diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), remains highly incurable, showing a worse response to standard immunochemotherapy. The discouraging results obtained in several clinical trials using proteasome inhibitors, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, or immunomodulators, lead to an intense search for new, potentially druggable biomarkers in DLBCL. In this study, we designed an experimental strategy for DLBCL to discover high- and low-abundance RNA-seq-derived transcripts involved in the oncogenic phenotype in patients diagnosed with ABC-DLBCL. Based on the results of a comparative analysis, 79 DE genes and two enriched gene sets related to metabolism and immunity were selected. Genes related to drug resistance, anti-inflammatory response, and tumor-cell dissemination were found to be up-regulated, while tumor suppressor genes were down-regulated. Then, we searched for the perturbagens most suitable for gene expression profiling (GEP) by iLINCS-CMap. Herein, we present a novel experimental approach that connects the omics signature of DLBCL with potential drugs for more accurate treatments.

COVID-19: age, Interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, and lymphocytes as key clues from a multicentre retrospective study

Background

The SARS-CoV-2 infection has widely spread to become the greatest public health challenge to date, the COVID-19 pandemic. Different fatality rates among countries are probably due to non-standardized records being carried out by local health authorities. The Spanish case-fatality rate is 11.22%, far higher than those reported in Asia or by other European countries. A multicentre retrospective study of demographic, clinical, laboratory and immunological features of 584 Spanish COVID-19 hospitalized patients and their outcomes was performed. The use of renin-angiotensin system blockers was also analysed as a risk factor.

Results

In this study, 27.4% of cases presented a mild course, 42.1% a moderate one and for 30.5% of cases, the course was severe. Ages ranged from 18 to 98 (average 63). Almost 60 % (59.8%) of patients were male. Interleukin 6 was higher as severity increased. On the other hand, CD8 lymphocyte count was significantly lower as severity grew and subpopulations CD4, CD8, CD19, and NK showed concordant lowering trends. Severity-related natural killer percent descents were evidenced just within aged cases. A significant severity-related decrease of CD4 lymphocytes was found in males. The use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors was associated with a better prognosis. The angiotensin II receptor blocker use was associated with a more severe course.

Conclusions

Age and age-related comorbidities, such as dyslipidaemia, hypertension or diabetes, determined more frequent severe forms of the disease in this study than in previous literature cohorts. Our cases are older than those so far reported and the clinical course of the disease is found to be impaired by age. Immunosenescence might be therefore a suitable explanation for the hampering of immune system effectors. The adaptive immunity would become exhausted and a strong but ineffective and almost deleterious innate response would account for COVID-19 severity. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors used by hypertensive patients have a protective effect in regards to COVID-19 severity in our series. Conversely, patients on angiotensin II receptor blockers showed a severer disease.

Exposed necrotic bone in 183 patients with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: Associated clinical characteristics

BACKGROUND

The main objective of our study was to identify oral symptoms and signs most likely to be associated with the exposure of necrotic bone in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study group consisted of 183 patients with BRONJ. We recorded data on the underlying disease, bisphosphonate used, location of osteonecrosis, symptoms, pain, fistula development, suppuration, infection, exposed necrotic bone, and BRONJ stage.

RESULTS

The mean age of the patients was 68.22 ± 12.19 years. The sample included 118 (64.5%) women. Breast cancer and multiple myeloma were the most common underlying diseases, and 50 patients received oral bisphosphonates for osteoporosis. Dental extractions (69.4%) and mandibular location (74.3%) predominated. The only two variables influencing the possibility of necrotic bone exposure were intravenous bisphosphonate administration and the presence of an intraoral fistula (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Intravenous bisphosphonate use and intraoral fistula presence were associated with a major predisposition to bone exposure in patients with BRONJ.

Serum levels of RANKL and OPG, and the RANKL/OPG ratio in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: Are they useful biomarkers for the advanced stages of osteonecrosis?

Background

We determined whether serum levels of Receptor Activator for Nuclear Factor κ B Ligand (RANKL), Osteoprotegerin (OPG), and the RANKL/OPG ratio could be useful biomarkers for the severity of oral lesions in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ).

Material and Methods

A case-control study in which Group 1 consisted of 41 patients with BRONJ due to intravenous bisphosphonates, and Group 2 consisted of 44 healthy control cases. The plasma levels of RANKL and OPG were analyzed by an ELISA assay. The OPG/RANKL ratio was also calculated. We determined if the mean serum values differed among the different stages of BRONJ.

Results

Serum levels of RANKL were lower in Group 1 than in Group 2 (p =0.01), and serum levels of OPG were higher in patients with BRONJ than in the controls (p =0.006). The ratio of RANKL/OPG was greater in the controls than in Group 1 (P >0.01). There were no significant differences in the serum levels of RANKL and OPG among the different stages of osteonecrosis (P > 0.05).

Conclusions

Serum levels of RANKL and OPG, and the RANKL/OPG ratio were not valuable biomarkers for determining the severity of oral lesions in patients with BRONJ.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with bisphosphonates and denosumab in osteoporosis

OBJECTIVE

To describe the clinical characteristics and evolution of our series of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) associated with denosumab in osteoporotic patients.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We present 10 new cases of MRONJ in patients receiving denosumab for osteoporosis. We describe the mean doses of denosumab, previous bisphosphonate intake, and the clinical characteristics associated with the osteonecrosis, such as local contributing factors, symptoms, and evolution after treatment.

RESULTS

The mean number of denosumab doses was 3.4 ± 2.2. In 90% of patients, there was a prior history of oral bisphosphonate intake, with a mean duration of 46.78 ± 25.11 months. The most common local factor was dental extraction (6 cases; 60%), and most cases had necrotic bone exposure (9/10, 90%). Sclerosis of the bone was the most common radiographic finding. Stage 1 was the most common ONM stage, found in 80%. 'Cure' after conservative treatments was obtained in 71.4%.

CONCLUSIONS

Most of our cases were in the early stages of MRONJ, and the success rate after conservative treatment was high.

Frequency-shift vs phase-shift characterization of in-liquid quartz crystal microbalance applications

The improvement of sensitivity in quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) applications has been addressed in the last decades by increasing the sensor fundamental frequency, following the increment of the frequency/mass sensitivity with the square of frequency predicted by Sauerbrey. However, this sensitivity improvement has not been completely transferred in terms of resolution. The decrease of frequency stability due to the increase of the phase noise, particularly in oscillators, made impossible to reach the expected resolution. A new concept of sensor characterization at constant frequency has been recently proposed. The validation of the new concept is presented in this work. An immunosensor application for the detection of a low molecular weight contaminant, the insecticide carbaryl, has been chosen for the validation. An, in principle, improved version of a balanced-bridge oscillator is validated for its use in liquids, and applied for the frequency shift characterization of the QCM immunosensor application. The classical frequency shift characterization is compared with the new phase-shift characterization concept and system proposed.

Cytometric analysis of oral scrapings of patients with oral lichen planus

OBJECTIVE

Aneuploidy has been associated with malignant and premalignant oral lesions. In the past few years, its application in oral precancerous lesions and its prognostic meaning have been controversial issues. The aim of our study was to characterize alterations in DNA content by automated DNA image cytometry in oral scrapings of patients with oral lichen planus.

METHODS

Cytological samples from 40 patients clinicopathologically diagnosed with oral lichen planus were analysed by DNA image cytometry.

RESULTS

All the cases were classified as diploid, showing a predominant population of cells with normal DNA content (DNA index, 0.85-1.15). Atrophic/erosive lesions showed a higher percentage of tetraploid cells when compared with reticular/papular lesions but this was not statistically significant (P = 0.09).

CONCLUSIONS

Aneuploidy does not seem a common event in oral lichen planus lesions. However, we consider that the use of DNA image cytometry of oral scrapings may be an easy and helpful methodology in the follow-up of patients with these lesions.

A piezoelectric immunosensor for the determination of pesticide residues and metabolites in fruit juices

A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) immunosensor was developed for the determination of the insecticide carbaryl and 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP), the main metabolite of the insecticide chlorpyrifos and of the herbicide triclopyr. The detection was based on a competitive conjugate-immobilized immunoassay format using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs). Hapten conjugates were covalently immobilized, via thioctic acid self-assembled monolayer (SAM), onto the gold electrode sensitive surface of the quartz crystal. This covalent immobilization allowed the reusability of the modified electrode surface for at least one hundred and fifty assays without significant loss of sensitivity. The piezoimmunosensor showed detection limits (analyte concentrations producing 10% inhibition of the maximum signal) of 11 and 7 microg l(-1) for carbaryl and TCP, respectively. The sensitivity attained (I(50) value) was around 30 microg l(-1) for both compounds. Linear working ranges were 15-53 microg l(-1) for carbaryl and 13-83 microg l(-1) for TCP. Each complete assay cycle took 20 min. The good sensitivity, specificity, and reusability achieved, together with the short response time, allowed the application of this immunosensor to the determination of carbaryl and TCP in fruits and vegetables at European regulatory levels, with high precision and accuracy.

Pleomorphic adenoma of the palate

An 82-year-old female with a history of high blood pressure and anorexia. She was referred for a long-evolving, asymptomatic large tumor (3x3 cm) on the right side of the palate (fig 1). The patient was wearing total dentures. Intraoral examination revealed a pediculate tumor of the same color as the adjacent mucosa and presenting a firm consistency. An MRI study (fig 2-3) and biopsy were carried out (fig 4-6).

Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus manifesting with localized loss of periodontal attachment

Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA) is a chronic mucocutaneous inflammatory disorder of uncertain aetiology that is clinically characterized by the appearance of well delimited white plaques or papules, preferentially affecting the skin and genitals, and more rarely the oral cavity. We present the case of a woman with LSA limited to the oral cavity in the form of a well delimited, flat whitish lesion affecting the vestibular gingiva of the right upper incisors and left central incisor, and extending towards the vestibular fundus and frenulum of the upper lip. Widening of the periodontal space was observed, with gingival recession and attachment loss limited to these teeth. Local corticosteroid injections caused the mucosal lesion but not the periodontal alterations to resolve. Emphasis is placed on the importance of knowledge of this condition in relation to establishing a diagnosis, and on its periodontal repercussions.

Oral leishmaniasis in a HIV-positive patient. Report of a case involving the palate

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by a protozoon (Leishmania), with different clinical forms that are endemic in certain countries. The association of this disease in patients who are seropositive to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has recently been described. Leishmaniasis can develop in any stage of HIV infection, although the clinical manifestations - and hence the diagnosis - tend to coincide with the periods of maximum immune depression. We present the case of a HIV-positive, ex-intravenous drug abuser (in stage B2 of the CDC, 1992) with concomitant hepatitis C infection who presented with palatinal pain and bleeding for the past 2 months. Exploration revealed a vegetating tumoration of the hard palate. Hematoxylin-eosin and Giemsa staining of the biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of leishmaniasis. The definitive diagnosis was mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL), for a bone marrow aspirate proved negative, and no further lesions could be established. The patient was treated with meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime), followed by improvement of the lesions.

[Intraoral non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Presentation of 4 clinical cases]

The non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) represent an heterogeneous group of malignancies of lymphoreticular histogenesis. In most cases, they initially arise within lymph nodes but so-called extranodal lymphomas are also found. The NHL has low incidence in the oral cavity. It may involve bone and/or soft tissues as a primary or secondary manifestation. We present a review of the literature and four clinical cases of intraoral NHL. The first couple of cases are primary forms, the third one is associated to HIV infection and the last one is an oral presentation as a component of more widely disseminated disease.

An extended Butterworth-Van Dyke model for quartz crystal microbalance applications in viscoelastic fluid media

An extended Butterworth-Van Dyke (EBVD) model with frequency-independent parameters for the characterization of a resonant compound formed by a quartz crystal in contact with a finite viscoelastic layer contacting a semi-infinite viscoelastic medium is extracted by analysis of the lumped element model. The formulation of the EBVD model is compared with the complete expression of the electrical admittance of the loaded quartz derived from the transmission line model (TLM). Relative deviations between them do not exceed 3% around 1% bandwidth near resonance. An extended Martin & Granstaff's model and an explicit expression for the frequency shift that supposes an extension of Kanazawa's model for viscoelastic media are obtained. An analysis of the errors associated with the extraction of shear parameters of the coating for different materials prove that, to obtain an error less than 5% in the shear parameters determination, the viscoelastic contribution, defined as the relative error in the thickness computed from the frequency shift by Sauerbrey equation, must be greater than a limit that depends on Q, which is defined as the ratio of the shear storage modulus (G') to shear loss modulus (G"). In the materials studied, polymers in the transition range or in the rubbery state with Q = 1 and 10, the viscoelastic contribution must be higher than 15% and 50%, respectively, for a 5% limit error in the shear parameters extraction. A criterion for a practical determination of the appropriate viscoelastic regimes is indicated.

[Angiocentric lymphoma of the palate]

Angiocentric lymphomas are very infrequent neoplasms in our geographical setting. They tend to develop in the oronasal region in the form of necrotic lesions--specifically in the midfacial zone--with a rapid course and poor prognosis. Immunohistochemically, the malignant cells have been shown to correspond to T lymphocytes. In addition, recent research supports the possible role of Epstein-Barr virus as a possible etiological factor. We present the case of a 67 year old man with an ulcerated palatinal lesion of recent appearance that was diagnosed as angiocentric lymphoma by histopathological and immunohistochemical study. Following diagnosis, treatment was provided in the form of 3 cycles of CHOP type chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

A new method for continuous monitoring of series resonance frequency and simple determination of motional impedance parameters for loaded quartz-crystal resonators

A new electronic design for continuous motional series resonant frequency monitoring of loaded quartz crystal resonators is presented. Using this circuit, a low-cost method for a simple determination of equivalent circuit parameters of quartz crystal resonators is described. Measurements made with the proposed system on typical AT cut quartz crystals are in good agreement with those of an Impedance Analyzer.

Langerhans' cell histiocytosis restricted to the oral mucosa

Langerhans' cell histiocytosis comprises a group of disorders with Langerhans' cell proliferation as a common feature. The clinical presentation might be highly varied. Typically, there is bone involvement and, less frequently, lesions might be found in other organs, particularly the lungs, liver, lymph nodes, skin, and mucosae. Lesions limited to the oral mucosa are rare. We describe two patients with unifocal eosinophilic granuloma exclusively limited to the oral mucosa. Triamcinolone acetonide infiltration of a palatal lesion yielded a good result in one patient. Six months later, a similar lesion developed in the mandibular gingival mucosa, but it responded to the same treatment. The lesion in the other patient responded to local radiotherapy.

Renal hemodialysis patients: oral, salivary, dental and periodontal findings in 105 adult cases

OBJECTIVES

A study of the dental, periodontal, oral mucosal and salivary condition of adult patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) receiving hemodialysis (HD).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 105 patients on HD were studied, together with 53 healthy age and sex-matched controls. Indices employed included carious, absent and obturated teeth index (CAO index), plaque index, calculus index and loss of periodontal attachment. Whole and parotid salivary secretions were also measured.

RESULTS

The CAO index was not significantly higher among HD patients than controls (14.9 +/- 8.7 vs 13.3 +/- 7.9, respectively; t = 1.1; P = 0.3). However, plaque and calculus indices were significantly higher in HD patients (2.1 +/- 0.8 and 2.3 +/- 0.6, respectively) than controls (1.3 +/- 0.8 and 1.6 +/- 0.9) (P < 0.001). Loss of periodontal attachment was similar in both groups (4.9 +/- 2.5 vs 4.2 +/- 2.5 in the HD patients and controls, respectively) (t = 1.8; P = 0.07). There was no more oral mucosal pathology in HD patients than in controls (chi-square = 5.8; P = 0.3). Stimulated salivary secretion was significantly higher in controls than HD patients for both whole (t = -5.2; P < 0.001) and parotid (t = -2.6; P = 0.01) salivas.

CONCLUSIONS

The results show significantly higher plaque and calculus indices and lower salivary secretion among the HD patients than in healthy controls.

Psychologic factors and oral lichen planus. A psychometric evaluation of 100 cases

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to analyze the importance of psychologic factors in patients with oral lichen planus, and attempts were made to identify possible personality features characteristic of patients with oral lichen planus.

STUDY DESIGN

The study involved 100 patients with oral lichen planus (group 1) and 50 control subjects (group 2). We applied the following psychometric tests to both groups: Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Cattell Personality Questionnaire 16PF, Hassanyeh Rating of Anxiety-Depression-Vulnerability, Beck Depression Inventory, Raskin Depression Screen, and Covi Anxiety Screen.

RESULTS

The patients with oral lichen planus were found to exhibit greater anxiety, as reflected by statistically significant scores with the anxiety tests that were used (Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Cattell Personality Questionnaire 16PF, Hassanyeh Rating of Anxiety-Depression-Vulnerability, and Covi Anxiety Screen). The patients with oral lichen planus likewise exhibited greater depression than the controls in all 3 depression tests applied (Beck Depression Inventory, Hassanyeh Rating of Anxiety-Depression-Vulnerability, and Raskin Depression Screen) and were more vulnerable to psychic disorders on the basis of the PD subscales (vulnerability) of the Hassanyeh questionnaire. Three features (conformity to the group, astuteness, and rebelliousness) defined the personalities of our patients with oral lichen planus, according to the Cattell 16PF questionnaire. Finally, those patients with erosive lichen planus exhibited higher depression scores than patients with nonerosive lichen planus.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite the higher anxiety scores observed in patients with oral lichen planus, it was not established that the observed psychologic alterations constitute a direct etiologic factor of oral lichen planus; nor was it established that such alterations are a consequence of oral lichen planus and its lesions.

Preliminary investigation of the association of oral lichen planus and hepatitis C

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this investigation was to determine if an association exists between hepatitis C virus and oral lichen planus.

STUDY DESIGN

Three groups of subjects were selected: 505 patients with hepatitis C virus infection (group 1), 100 patients with oral lichen planus (group 2), and a randomly selected control group (age- and gender-matched) of 100 healthy subjects (group 3). The prevalence of oral lichen planus was determined in groups 1 and 3, and the prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection was established in groups 2 and 3.

RESULTS

The prevalence of oral lichen planus was 3.36% (n = 17) in group 1 and 1% (n = 1) in the control group; the prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection was 23% (n = 23) in group 2, and 5% (n = 5) in the control group. No significant differences were observed in the incidence of oral lichen planus in group 1 between those patients who received interferon and those who did not. The 17 patients in group 1 who manifested oral lichen planus and hepatitis C virus infection simultaneously exhibited a marked tendency to have only reticular lesions (70.6%), with involvement of the buccal mucosa in 88.2% of these patients, the tongue in 29.4%, and the gingiva in 11.8%. Analyzing a randomized subgroup of 143 patients from group 1 (subgroup 1) that was matched by age and gender with groups 2 and 3, we found that the incidence of oral lichen planus in patients with hepatitis C virus infection (subgroup 1) was greater than in the control group (5.59% vs 1%), though this was not statistically significant (chi2 = 0.119; p = 0.06). In contrast, group 2 exhibited a statistically significant higher incidence of hepatitis C virus infection (23%) than the controls (5%; chi2 = 0.259, p = 0.0002).

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection in patients with oral lichen planus was greater than in the control series. In our opinion this observation warrants the investigation of potential concomitant hepatitis C virus infection in patients with oral lichen planus.

Dental findings in patients with liver cirrhosis. A study of 100 cases

A study was made of the dental findings in 100 patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) by examining the number of carious, missing and filled teeth. A significantly greater number of carious and missing teeth were observed in the patients with cirrhosis than in a control group of 50 healthy individuals. In the LC group, caries were found to affect more teeth in those patients with alcohol-induced LC than in those with liver disease of other causes. Finally, no relationship was observed between the number of carious, missing or filled teeth and certain determinations including serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum glutamate oxalacetate transaminase (SGOT), alkaline phosphate, platelet number, hepatitis B and C positivity markers, or antinuclear (ANA), antimitochondrial (AMA) or anti-smooth muscle autoantibodies (ASm).

Candida biotypes in patients with oral leukoplakia and lichen planus. Candida biotypes in leukoplakia and lichen planus

Prevalence of yeasts in 35 leukoplakia and 34 oral lichen planus patients was compared with that observed in persons without oral diseases. Serotype and morphotype were determined on Candida albicans isolates. Yeasts were isolated from the oral cavity specimens of 43.7% of the patients. C. albicans (serotype A) was the predominant species (76% in leukoplakia, 88.2% in lichen planus and 60.8% in healthy persons). Sixteen morphotypes were encountered on malt extract agar, being 732, 733, 734, 753 and 754 the most frequently found. Morphotypes SP1N and SP1Y were the most common on Sabouraud-trypheniltetrazolium agar (68.4% of the isolates from leukoplakia and 73.3% from lichen planus, but only 46.6% of the isolates from healthy oral mucosa showed SP1N morphotype). Presence of oral lesions was associated with a marked reduction in the yeast species and C. albicans biotypes, suggesting that C. albicans and particularly some of its biotypes, show a high potential of adaptation to the changes associated with the development of oral leukoplakia and lichen planus.

A clinical study of 205 patients with oral lichen planus

Two hundred and five patients with oral lichen planus were divided into two groups: those with only reticular lesions (group 1) and those with atrophic-erosive lesions with or without concomitant reticular lesions (group 2). A comparative study of the two groups showed that the most commonly affected oral location in both was the buccal mucosa. Lesions of the tongue, gingiva, lip, and palate predominated in group 2. Likewise, chronic liver disease and diabetes were more common in the second group, as was extension of the oral lesions (P less than .001).
