Measurement of exclusive π(0) electroproduction structure functions and their relationship to transverse generalized parton distributions

Exclusive π(0) electroproduction at a beam energy of 5.75 GeV has been measured with the Jefferson Lab CLAS spectrometer. Differential cross sections were measured at more than 1800 kinematic values in Q(2), x(B), t, and ϕ(π), in the Q(2) range from 1.0 to 4.6  GeV(2), -t up to 2  GeV(2), and x(B) from 0.1 to 0.58. Structure functions σ(T)+ϵσ(L), σ(TT), and σ(LT) were extracted as functions of t for each of 17 combinations of Q(2) and x(B). The data were compared directly with two handbag-based calculations including both longitudinal and transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs). Inclusion of only longitudinal GPDs very strongly underestimates σ(T)+ϵσ(L) and fails to account for σ(TT) and σ(LT), while inclusion of transversity GPDs brings the calculations into substantially better agreement with the data. There is very strong sensitivity to the relative contributions of nucleon helicity-flip and helicity nonflip processes. The results confirm that exclusive π(0) electroproduction offers direct experimental access to the transversity GPDs.

Q2 Dependence of quadrupole strength in the gamma*p --> Delta(+)(1232) --> p pi(0) transition

Models of baryon structure predict a small quadrupole deformation of the nucleon due to residual tensor forces between quarks or distortions from the pion cloud. Sensitivity to quark versus pion degrees of freedom occurs through the Q2 dependence of the magnetic (M1+), electric (E1+), and scalar (S1+) multipoles in the gamma*p-->Delta(+)-->p pi(0) transition. We report new experimental values for the ratios E(1+)/M(1+) and S(1+)/M(1+) over the range Q2 = 0.4-1.8 GeV2, extracted from precision p(e,e(')p)pi(0) data using a truncated multipole expansion. Results are best described by recent unitary models in which the pion cloud plays a dominant role.

Binding and disruption of phospholipid bilayers by supramolecular RNA complexes

In an RNA world, RNAs would have regulated traffic through normally impermeable bilayer membranes. Using selection-amplification we previously found RNAs that bind stably and increase the ionic conductance of phospholipid membranes at high Mg(2+) and Ca(2+) concentrations. Now selection in reduced divalents yields RNAs that bind phosphatidylcholine liposomes under conditions closer to physiological. Such affinity for phospholipid membranes requires interactions between RNAs. In fact, we detected no functional monomeric membrane-binding RNAs. A membrane-active end-to-end heterotrimer consisting of 2 RNA 9 and 1 RNA 10 is defined by nucleotide protection, oligonucleotide competition, and mutant analysis. Oligomers of the heterotrimer bind stably, cause release of liposome-encapsulated solutes, and disrupt model black membranes. Individual RNA molecules do not show any of these activities. This novel mechanism of RNA binding to lipid membranes may not only regulate membrane permeability, but suggests that arrays of catalytic or structural RNAs on membranes are plausible. Finally, a selection met only by RNA complexes evokes new possibilities for selection-amplification itself.

The ep -->e'p eta reaction at and above the S11(1535) baryon resonance

New cross sections for the reaction e p-->e p eta are reported for total center of mass energy W = 1.5--1.86 GeV and invariant momentum transfer Q2 = 0.25--1.5 (GeV/c)(2). This large kinematic range allows extraction of important new information about response functions, photocouplings, and eta N coupling strengths of baryon resonances. Newly observed structure at W approximately 1.65 GeV is shown to come from interference between S and P waves and can be interpreted with known resonances. Improved values are derived for the photon coupling amplitude for the S11(1535) resonance.

Mechanism and specificity of RNA cleavage by chemical ribonucleases

Cleaving of model RNA substrates by chemical ribonucleases constructed by conjugation of 1,4 diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane with histamine and histidine was investigated. Similarly to RNase A, the chemical RNases produce fragments with 5' hydroxy-group and 3'-cyclophosphate. The cleavage occurs as the catalytic reaction: more than 150 phosphodiester bonds in RNA can be cleaved by one molecule of RNase mimic.

Characterization and selectivity of catalytic antibodies from human serum with RNase activity

IgG purified from sera of several patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and hepatitis B are shown to present RNA hydrolyzing activities that are different from the weak RNase A-type activities found in the sera of healthy donors. Further investigation brings evidence for two intrinsic activities, one observed in low salt conditions and another specifically stimulated by Mg2+ions and distinguishable from human sera RNases. Cleavage of RNA substrates by the latter activity is not sequence-specific but sensitive to both subtle conformational and/or drastic folding changes, as evidenced by comparative analysis of couples of structurally well-studied RNA substrates. These include yeast tRNAAsp and its in vitro transcript and human mitochondrial tRNALys-derived in vitro transcripts. The discovery of catalytic antibodies with RNase activities is a first step towards creation of a new generation of tools for the investigation of RNA structure.
