Abstract
High-resolution neutron and THz spectroscopies are used to study the magnetic excitation spectrum of Cs_{2}CoBr_{4}, a distorted-triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with nearly XY-type anisotropy. What was previously thought of as a broad excitation continuum [L. Facheris et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 087201 (2022)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.087201] is shown to be a series of dispersive bound states reminiscent of "Zeeman ladders" in quasi-one-dimensional Ising systems. At wave vectors where interchain interactions cancel at the mean field level, they can indeed be interpreted as bound finite-width kinks in individual chains. Elsewhere in the Brillouin zone their true two-dimensional structure and propagation are revealed.

Abstract
We report the experimental observation of dielectric relaxation by quantum critical magnons. Complex capacitance measurements reveal a dissipative feature with a temperature-dependent amplitude due to low-energy lattice excitations and an activation behavior of the relaxation time. The activation energy softens close to a field-tuned magnetic quantum critical point at H=H_{c} and follows single-magnon energy for H>H_{c}, showing its magnetic origin. Our study demonstrates the electrical activity of coupled low-energy spin and lattice excitations, an example of quantum multiferroic behavior.

Abstract
We report an excellent realization of the highly nonclassical incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) state in the quantum frustrated antiferromagnetic insulator Cs_{2}CoBr_{4}. In contrast to the well-known Ising spin chain case, here the SDW is stabilized by virtue of competing planar in-chain anisotropies and frustrated interchain exchange. Adjacent to the SDW phase is a broad m=1/3 magnetization plateau that can be seen as a commensurate locking of the SDW state into the up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. This represents the first example of the long-sought SDW-UUD transition in triangular-type quantum magnets.

Abstract
Using a combination of neutron scattering, calorimetry, quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and analytic results we uncover confinement effects in depleted, partially magnetized quantum spin ladders. We show that introducing nonmagnetic impurities into magnetized spin ladders leads to the emergence of a new characteristic length L in the otherwise scale-free Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (serving as the effective low-energy model). This results in universal LT scaling of staggered susceptibilities. Comparison of simulation results with experimental phase diagrams of prototypical spin ladder compounds bis(2,3-dimethylpyridinium)tetrabromocuprate(II) (DIMPY) and bis(piperidinium)tetrabromocuprate(II) (BPCB) yields excellent agreement.

Abstract
We report low temperature electron spin resonance experimental and theoretical studies of an archetype S=1/2 strong-rung spin ladder material (C_{5}H_{12}N)_{2}CuBr_{4}. Unexpected dynamics is detected deep in the Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid regime. Close to the point where the system is half-magnetized (and believed to be equivalent to a gapless easy plane chain in zero field) we observed orientation-dependent spin gap and anomalous g-factor values. Field theoretical analysis demonstrates that the observed low-energy excitation modes in magnetized (C_{5}H_{12}N)_{2}CuBr_{4} are solitonic excitations caused by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction presence.

Abstract
Single crystal neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, and electron spin resonance experiments are used to study the magnetic structure and spin waves in Pb2VO(PO4)2, a prototypical layered S = 1/2 ferromagnet with frustrating next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. The observed excitation spectrum is found to be inconsistent with a simple square lattice model previously proposed for this material. At least four distinct exchange coupling constants are required to reproduce the measured spin wave dispersion. The degree of magnetic frustration is correspondingly revised and found to be substantially smaller than in all previous estimates.

Abstract
By means of inelastic neutron scattering we investigate finite temperature dynamics in the quantum spin ladder compound (C_{5}H_{12}N)_{2}CuBr_{4} (BPCB) near the magnetic field induced quantum critical point with dynamical exponent z=2. We observe universal finite-temperature scaling of the transverse local dynamic structure factor in spectacular quantitative agreement with long-standing theoretical predictions. At the same time, already at rather low temperatures, we observe strong nonuniversal longitudinal fluctuations. To separate the two, we make use of an intrinsic leg-exchange symmetry of the spin ladder. Complementary measurements of specific heat also reveal striking scaling behavior near the quantum critical point.

Abstract
We report a novel crossover behavior in the long-range-ordered phase of a prototypical spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder compound (C_{7}H_{10}N)_{2}CuBr_{4}. The staggered order was previously evidenced from a continuous and symmetric splitting of ^{14}N NMR spectral lines on lowering the temperature below T_{c}≃330 mK, with a saturation towards ≃150 mK. Unexpectedly, the split lines begin to further separate away below T^{*}∼100 mK, while the linewidth and the line shape remain completely invariable. This crossover behavior is further corroborated by the NMR relaxation rate T_{1}^{-1} measurements. A very strong suppression reflecting the ordering, T_{1}^{-1}∼T^{5.5}, observed above T^{*}, is replaced by T_{1}^{-1}∼T below T^{*}. These original NMR features are indicative of the unconventional nature of the crossover, which may arise from a unique arrangement of the ladders into a spatially anisotropic and frustrated coupling network.

Abstract
We present a direct NMR method to determine whether the interactions in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) state of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder are attractive or repulsive. For the strong-leg spin ladder compound (C_{7}H_{10}N)_{2}CuBr_{4} we find that the isothermal magnetic field dependence of the NMR relaxation rate T_{1}^{-1}(H) displays a concave curve between the two critical fields bounding the TLL regime. This is in sharp contrast to the convex curve previously reported for a strong-rung ladder, (C_{5}H_{12}N)_{2}CuBr_{4}. We show that the concavity and the convexity of T_{1}^{-1}(H), which is a fingerprint of spin fluctuations, directly reflect the attractive and repulsive fermionic interactions in the TLL, respectively. The interaction sign is alternatively determined from an indirect method combining bulk magnetization and specific heat data.

Abstract
Properties of the depleted Heisenberg spin ladder material series (C_{7}H_{10}N)_{2}Cu_{1-z}Zn_{z}Br_{4} have been studied by the combination of magnetic measurements and neutron spectroscopy. Disorder-induced degrees of freedom lead to a specific magnetic response, described in terms of emergent strongly interacting "spin island" objects. The structure and dynamics of the spin islands is studied by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. This allows us to determine their spatial shape and to observe their mutual interactions, manifested by strong spectral in-gap contributions.

Abstract
Electron spin resonance experiment reveals that non-magnetic bond doping of the spin-gap magnet (C4H12N2)Cu2Cl6 (abbreviated PHCC) results in the formation of S = 1 paramagnetic centers that dominate low-temperature ESR response. We have followed evolution of this signal with doping impurity content and have found that the concentraion of these centers is quadratic over the impurity content. We also observe coexistence of the ESR responses from these local centers and from delocalized triplet excitations over a certain temperature range.

Abstract
We report a neutron scattering study of the ferroelectric phase transition in Sr0.585Ce0.025Ba0.39Nb2O6 (SBN-61:Ce). We find no evidence for a soft transverse optic phonon. We do, however, observe anisotropic diffuse scattering. This scattering has inelastic and elastic contributions. In the paraelectric phase the susceptibility associated with the elastic diffuse scattering from SBN-61:Ce increases on approaching the transition temperature. In the ferroelectric phase the lineshape of the elastic scattering is consistent with the form expected for the ferroelectric domain walls. In contrast to the macroscopic observations, the scattering properties of Ce-doped crystal do not exhibit important changes with respect to those of pure Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6.

Abstract
We report results of an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of a spin-gap antiferromagnet (C(4)H(12)N(2))(Cu(2(Cl(6)) (nicknamed PHCC) with chlorine ions partially substituted by bromine. We found that up to 10% of nominal doping the contribution of the random defects to the absorption spectra remains at about 0.1% per copper ion, which is almost the same as in the pure system. Instead, a particular kind of ESR absorption corresponding to gapless S = 1 triplets is observed at low temperatures in samples with high nominal bromine content x ≥ 5%. Increase of bromine concentration also leads to the systematic broadening of ESR absorption line, indicating reduction of the quasi-particles lifetime.

Abstract
We report a neutron scattering study of a ferroelectric phase transition in Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6 (SBN-61). The ferroelectric polarization is along the crystallographic c-axis but the transverse acoustic branch propagating along the 〈1, 1, 0〉 direction does not show any anomaly associated with this transition. We find no evidence for a soft transverse optic phonon. We do, however, observe elastic diffuse scattering. The intensity of this scattering increases as the sample is cooled from a temperature well above the phase transition. The susceptibility associated with this diffuse scattering follows the anomaly of the dielectric permittivity of SBN-61 well. Below Tc the shape of this scattering is consistent with the scattering expected from ferroelectric domain walls. Our results suggest that despite apparent chemical disorder SBN-61 behaves as a classic order-disorder uniaxial ferroelectric with critical fluctuations in the range <10(-11) s.

Abstract
We present NMR measurements of a strong-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder compound (C7H10N)2CuBr4 under magnetic fields up to 15 T in the temperature range from 1.2 K down to 50 mK. From the splitting of NMR lines, we determine the phase boundary and the order parameter of the low-temperature (three-dimensional) long-range-ordered phase. In the Tomonaga-Luttinger regime above the ordered phase, NMR relaxation reflects characteristic power-law decay of spin correlation functions as 1/T1∝T(1/2K-1), which allows us to determine the interaction parameter K as a function of field. We find that field-dependent K varies within the 1<K<2 range, which signifies attractive interaction between the spinless fermions in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid.

Abstract
Inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the spin excitation spectrum of the Heisenberg S=1/2 ladder material (C7H10N)2CuBr4 in its entirety, both in the gapped spin liquid and the magnetic field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid regimes. A fundamental change of the spin dynamics is observed between these two regimes. Density matrix renormalization group calculations quantitatively reproduce and help understand the observed commensurate and incommensurate excitations. The results validate long-standing quantum field-theoretical predictions but also test the limits of that approach.

Abstract
The S=1/2 spin chain material SrCuO2 doped with 1% S=1 Ni impurities is studied by inelastic neutron scattering. At low temperatures, the spectrum shows a pseudogap Δ≈8 meV, absent in the parent compound, and not related to any structural phase transition. The pseudogap is shown to be a generic feature of quantum spin chains with dilute defects. A simple model based on this idea quantitatively accounts for the experimental data measured in the temperature range from 2 to 300 K, and allows us to represent the momentum-integrated dynamic structure factor in a universal scaling form.

Abstract
It is widely believed that magnetic excitations become increasingly incoherent as the temperature is raised due to random collisions which limit their lifetime. This picture is based on spin-wave calculations for gapless magnets in 2 and 3 dimensions and is observed experimentally as a symmetric Lorentzian broadening in energy. Here, we investigate a three-dimensional dimer antiferromagnet and find unexpectedly that the broadening is asymmetric-indicating that far from thermal decoherence, the excitations behave collectively like a strongly correlated gas. This result suggests that a temperature activated coherent state of quasiparticles is not confined to special cases like the highly dimerized spin-1/2 chain but is found generally in dimerized antiferromagnets of all dimensionalities and perhaps gapped magnets in general.

Abstract
The strong-leg S=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder system (C(7)H(10)N)(2)CuBr(4) is investigated using density matrix renormalization group calculations, inelastic neutron scattering, and bulk magnetothermodynamic measurements. Measurements showed qualitative differences compared to the strong-rung case. A long-lived two-triplon bound state is confirmed to persist across most of the Brillouin zone in a zero field. In applied fields, in the Tomonaga-Luttinger spin-liquid phase, elementary excitations are attractive, rather than repulsive. In the presence of weak interladder interactions, the strong-leg system is considerably more prone to three-dimensional ordering.

Abstract
We have used a combination of neutron resonant spin-echo and triple-axis spectroscopies to determine the energy, fine structure, and linewidth of the magnon resonance in the model spin-1/2 ladder antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl(3) at temperatures T≪Δ(0)/k(B), where Δ(0) is the spin gap at T=0. In this low-temperature regime we find that the results deviate substantially from the predictions of the nonlinear sigma model proposed as a description of magnon excitations in one-dimensional quantum magnets and attribute these deviations to real-space and spin-space anisotropies in the spin Hamiltonian as well as scattering of magnon excitations from a dilute density of impurities. These effects are generic to experimental realizations of one-dimensional quantum magnets.

Abstract
NMR measurements of the (29)Si spin-lattice relaxation time T(1) were used to probe the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain compound BaCu(2)(Si(1-x)Ge(x))(2)O(7). Remarkable differences between the pure (x=0) and the fully random (x=0.5) cases are observed, indicating that randomness generates a distribution of local magnetic relaxations. This distribution, which is reflected in a stretched exponential NMR relaxation, exhibits a progressive broadening with decreasing temperature, caused by a growing inequivalence of magnetic sites. Compelling independent evidence for the influence of randomness is also obtained from magnetization data and Monte Carlo calculations. These results suggest the formation of random-singlet states in this class of materials, as previously predicted by theory.

Abstract
The quasi-one-dimensional compound BaCu(2)Si(2)O(7) demonstrates numerous spin-reorientation transitions both for a magnetic field applied along the easy axis of magnetization and a magnetic field applied perpendicular to it. The magnetic phase diagram for all three principal orientations is obtained by magnetization and specific heat measurements. Values of all critical fields and low-temperature values of magnetization jumps are determined for all transitions.

Abstract
We present thermodynamic and neutron scattering data on silver ferrite AgFeO(2). The data imply that strong magnetic frustration Θ/T(N)∼10 and magnetic ordering arise via two successive phase transitions at T(2) = 7 K and T(1) = 16 K. At T<T(2), two metamagnetic phase transitions at B(1)∼14 T and B(2)∼30 T can be identified through the change of slope in the magnetization curve measured up to 53 T. These transitions roughly correspond to an eighth and a quarter of the saturation magnetizations. Unlike for the 'classical' delafossite CuFeO(2), the wavevector of the magnetic structure is independent of temperature both at T<T(2) and at T(2)<T<T(1).

Abstract
Magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements are used to map out the entire magnetic phase diagram of KFe(MoO4)2. This stacked triangular antiferromagnet is structurally similar to the famous multiferroic system RbFe(MoO4)2. Because of an additional small crystallographic distortion, it contains two sets of inequivalent distorted magnetic triangular lattices. As a result, the spin network breaks down into two intercalated yet almost independent magnetic subsystems. One is a collinear antiferromagnet that shows a simple spin-flop behavior in applied magnetic fields. The other is a helimagnet that instead goes through a series of exotic commensurate-incommensurate phase transformations. In the various phases one observes either true three-dimensional or unconventional quasi-two-dimensional ordering.

Abstract
Temperature dependencies of gap energies and magnon lifetimes are measured in the quasi-one-dimensional S=1/2 gapped quantum magnets (CH3)(2)CHNH(3)CuCL(3) (IPA-CuCl(3), where IPA denotes isopropyl ammonium) and Cu(2)Cl(4).D(8)C(4)SO(2) (Sul-Cu(2)Cl(4)) using inelastic neutron scattering. The results are compared to those found in literature for S=1 Haldane spin chain materials and to theoretical calculations for the O(3)- and O(N)- quantum nonlinear sigma-models. It is found that when the T=0 energy gap Delta is used as the temperature scale, all experimental and theoretical curves are identical to within system-dependent but temperature-independent scaling factors of the order of unity. This quasi-universality extends over a surprising broad T range, at least up to kappaT approximately 1.5 Delta.

Abstract
Inelastic neutron scattering is used to investigate magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin-liquid system Cu(2)Cl(4).D(8)C(4)SO(2). Contrary to previously conjectured models that relied on bond-alternating nearest-neighbor interactions in the spin chains, the dominant interactions are actually next-nearest-neighbor in-chain antiferromagnetic couplings. The appropriate Heisenberg Hamiltonian is equivalent to that of a S=1/2 4-leg spin-tube with almost perfect one dimensionality and no bond alternation. A partial geometric frustration of rung interactions induces a small incommensurability of short-range spin correlations.

Abstract
The weakly coupled quasi-one-dimensional spin ladder compound (CH3)2CHNH3CuCl3 is studied by neutron scattering in magnetic fields exceeding the critical field of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. Commensurate long-range order and the associated Goldstone mode are detected and found to be similar to those in reference to spin-dimer materials. However, for the upper two massive magnon branches, the observed behavior is totally different, culminating in a drastic collapse of excitation bandwidth beyond the transition point.

Abstract
Magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl3 are studied by cold neutron inelastic scattering. Strongly dispersive gap excitations are observed. Contrary to previously proposed models, the system is best described as an asymmetric quantum spin ladder. The observed spectrum is interpreted in terms of composite Haldane spin chains. The key difference from actual S=1 chains is a sharp cutoff of the single-magnon spectrum at a certain critical wave vector.

Abstract
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the S = 1 quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(C9D24N4)(NO2)ClO4 have been performed under magnetic fields below and above a critical field Hc at which the energy gap closes. Normal field dependence of Zeeman splitting of the excited triplet modes below Hc has been observed, but the highest mode is unusually small and smears out with increasing field. This can be explained by an interaction with a low-lying two magnon continuum at q(parallel) = pi that is present in dimerized chains but absent in uniform ones. Above Hc, we find only one excited mode, in stark contrast with three massive excitations previously observed in the structurally similar Haldane-gap material NDMAP [A. Zheludev, Phys. Rev. B 68, 134438 (2003)].

Abstract
A microscopic model for the diluted spin-mixed compounds (RxY1-x)2BaNiO5 (R=magnetic rare earth) is studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The ordering temperature is shown to be a universal function of the impurity concentration x and the intrinsic Ni-chain correlation length. An effective model for the critical modes is derived. The possibility of a quantum critical point driven by the rare-earth concentration and the existence of a quantum Griffiths phase in the high dilution limit is investigated. Several possible experimental approaches to verify the results are put forward.

Abstract
The unusual magnetic properties of a novel low-dimensional quantum ferrimagnet Cu2Fe2Ge4O13 are studied using bulk methods, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering. It is shown that this material can be described in terms of two low-dimensional quantum spin subsystems, one gapped and the other gapless, characterized by two distinct energy scales. Long-range magnetic ordering observed at low temperatures is a cooperative phenomenon caused by weak coupling of these two spin networks.

Abstract
Single crystal inelastic neutron scattering is used to study dynamic spin correlations in the quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet BaCu2(Si0.5Ge0.5)2O7, where the exchange constant fluctuates due to a random distribution of Si and Ge atoms. The measured low-energy spectrum is dominated by localized excitations and can be understood in the framework of the random singlet model. The observed scaling relations for the frequency dependencies of the correlation length and structure factor are in excellent agreement with recent theoretical predictions for the renormalization group fixed point.

Abstract
Neutron diffraction and bulk measurements are used to determine the nature of the low-temperature ordered state in LiCu2O2, a S=1/2 spin-chain compound with competing interactions. The spin structure is found to be helimagnetic, with a propagation vector (0.5,zeta,0), zeta=0.174. The nearest-neighbor exchange constant and frustration ratio are estimated to be J(1)=5.8 meV and J(2)/J(1)=0.29, respectively. For idealized quantum spin chains, these parameter values would signify a gapped spin-liquid ground state with commensurate spin correlations. The observed temperature dependence of the magnetic propagation vector in LiCu2O2 is attributed to a competition between incommensurate helimagnetism in the classical spin model and commensurability in the quantum case. It is also proposed that long-range ordering in LiCu2O2 is facilitated by intrinsic nonstoichiometry.

Abstract
A low-field spin-flop transition in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet BaCu2Si2O7 is exploited to study the polarization dependence of low-energy magnetic excitations. The measured longitudinal spectrum is best described as a single broad continuum, with no sharp "longitudinal mode," in apparent contradiction with the commonly used chain-mean-field and random phase approximation (MF/RPA) theories. The observed behavior is also quite different than that previously seen in the related KCuF3 material, presumably due to a large difference in the relative strength of interchain interactions. The results highlight the limitations of the chain-MF/RPA approach.

Abstract
Field-induced commensurate transverse magnetic ordering is observed in the Haldane-gap compound Ni(C(5)D(14)N(2))2N(3)(PF(6)) by means of neutron diffraction. Depending on the direction of applied field, the high-field phase is shown to be either a three-dimensional ordered Néel state or a short-range ordered state with dominant two-dimensional spin correlations. The structure of the high-field phase is determined, and properties of the observed quantum phase transition are discussed.

Abstract
Inelastic neutron scattering is used to study transverse-polarized magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnet BaCu2Si2O7, where the saturation value for the Neel order parameter is m(0) = 0.12&mgr;(B) per spin. At low energies the spectrum is totally dominated by resolution-limited spin-wave-like excitations. An excitation continuum sets in above a well-defined threshold frequency. Experimental results are discussed in the context of current theories for weakly interacting quantum half-integer-spin chains.
