Adaptive behaviour and learning in slime moulds: the role of oscillations

The slime mould Physarum polycephalum, an aneural organism, uses information from previous experiences to adjust its behaviour, but the mechanisms by which this is accomplished remain unknown. This article examines the possible role of oscillations in learning and memory in slime moulds. Slime moulds share surprising similarities with the network of synaptic connections in animal brains. First, their topology derives from a network of interconnected, vein-like tubes in which signalling molecules are transported. Second, network motility, which generates slime mould behaviour, is driven by distinct oscillations that organize into spatio-temporal wave patterns. Likewise, neural activity in the brain is organized in a variety of oscillations characterized by different frequencies. Interestingly, the oscillating networks of slime moulds are not precursors of nervous systems but, rather, an alternative architecture. Here, we argue that comparable information-processing operations can be realized on different architectures sharing similar oscillatory properties. After describing learning abilities and oscillatory activities of P. polycephalum, we explore the relation between network oscillations and learning, and evaluate the organism's global architecture with respect to information-processing potential. We hypothesize that, as in the brain, modulation of spontaneous oscillations may sustain learning in slime mould. Nonlinear compliance of elastic layers to indentation

Thin samples adherent to a rigid substrate are considerably less compliant to indentation when compared to specimens that are not geometrically confined. Analytical corrections to this so-called substrate effect exist for various types of indenters but are not applicable when large deformations are possible, as is the case in biological materials. To overcome this limitation, we construct a nonlinear scaling model characterized by one single exponent, which we explore employing a parametric finite element analysis. The model is based on asymptotes of two length scales in relation to the sample thickness, i.e., indentation depth and radius of the contact area. For small indentation depth, we require agreement with analytical, linear models, whereas for large indentation depth and extensive contact area, we recognize similarity to uniaxial deformation, indicating a divergent force required to indent nonlinear materials. In contrast, we find linear materials not to be influenced by the substrate effect beyond first order, implying that nonlinear effects originating from either the material or geometric confinement are clearly separated only in thin samples. Furthermore, in this regime the scaling model can be derived by following a heuristic argument extending a linear model to large indentation depths. Lastly, in a large indentation setting where the contact is small in comparison with sample thickness, we observe nonlinear effects independent of material type that we attribute to a higher-order influence of geometrical confinement. In this regime, we define a scalar as the ratio of strains along principal axes as obtained by comparison with the case of a point force on a half-space. We find this scalar to be in quantitative agreement with the scaling exponent, indicating an approach to distinguish between nonlinear effects in the scaling model. While we conjecture our findings to be applicable to other flat-ended indenters, we focus on the case of a flat-ended cylinder in normal contact with a thin layer. The analytical solution for small indentation associated with this problem has been given by Hayes et al. (J Biomech 5:541-551, 1972), for which we provide a convenient numerical implementation.

Physarum polycephalum percolation as a paradigm for topological phase transitions in transportation networks

We study the formation of transportation networks of the true slime mold Physarum polycephalum after fragmentation by shear. Small fragments, called microplasmodia, fuse to form macroplasmodia in a percolation transition. At this topological phase transition, one single giant component forms, connecting most of the previously isolated microplasmodia. Employing the configuration model of graph theory for small link degree, we have found analytically an exact solution for the phase transition. It is generally applicable to percolation as seen, e.g., in vascular networks.

[Comparison of four digital and one conventional radiographic image systems for the chest in a patient study with subsequent system optimization]

PURPOSE

Using a patient study to prove the clinical relevance of a comparison of five different radiographic systems for the chest conducted with an anthropomorphic chest phantom. Depending on the results, it was tested whether the performance of a modern digital system with a transparent imaging plate can be improved by changing the post-processing of the image.

METHOD

Chest radiographs of patients were taken with a CsI/aSi-flat panel detector (FDR), transparent imaging plate (tDLR), selenium drum detector (DSR), conventional storage phosphor plate (DLR) and asymmetrical screen-film-system (aFFS), and compared using image criteria scoring (ICS) and visual grading analysis (VGA) for anatomical structures (modified criterions of the EUR 16 260 EN guidelines). After optimizing the post processing, the images of the tDLR-system were evaluated once more in a phantom ROC study and patient VGA study.

RESULTS

The flat panel detector-system proved to meet best the anatomical image quality criteria, followed by DSR, tDLR, aFFS and DLR. The modified post processing of the tDLR-images resulted in a significantly better detection of simulated pathological lung-structures, but improved the perceptibility of anatomical structures only slightly.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of the patient VGA study and the phantom ROC study are similar and considered valid. The new digital imaging systems with flat panel detector and transparent imaging plate provide the best image quality of the tested radiographic devices for chest imaging, assuming that all system components are attuned and optimized for the type of structure to be detected. Image processing is of primary importance for system optimization.

[Chest radiography: ROC phantom study of four different digital systems and one conventional radiographic system]

PURPOSE

To compare the diagnostic quality of five different radiographic systems used in chest radiography for visualization of differently configured, clinically relevant pathologic pulmonary structures.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Four digital detector systems using as detection unit a CsI/aSi-based flat panel detector, a transparent imaging plate, a selenium detector and a conventional storage phosphor plate were analyzed for this study, as well as an asymmetrical film-screen system. The analyzed imaging material consisted of radiographs of an anthropomorphic chest-phantom with superimposed simulated pulmonary structures. The images were evaluated for different pathologic structures by a newly developed multiple structure ROC (ms-ROC).

RESULTS

The performance of each system was found to have a strong structure-related variability. The flat panel detector system had the best overall performance. The theoretical advantage of the 4k-matrix of the transparent imaging plate over the 3k-matrix of the flat panel detector was only confirmed for reticular structures.

CONCLUSIONS

In addition to comparing the image quality of the different systems, this study shows that the performance of a radiographic system depends on the structure to be analyzed. The modified ROC (ms-ROC) provides valid results with less effort.

Digital selenium radiography: detection of subtle pulmonary lesions on images acquired with and without an additional antiscatter grid

OBJECTIVE

the objective of this ROC-study was to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of images acquired with a grid in digital selenium radiography compared to that on images obtained with the integrated air gap only.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

seven types of simulated lesions were superimposed onto an anthropomorphic chest phantom. Selenium radiography images were obtained either with or without an additional antiscatter grid. For images acquired with a grid either a similar or increased exposure level was used. Both normal and obese patients were simulated.

RESULTS

When a grid was used with an equivalent detector dose and a higher exposure, diagnostic performance was significantly improved as compared to images obtained with only the air gap. ROC curve areas for mediastinal nodules and catheters were substantially higher for images acquired with a grid and the same exposure level compared to images obtained without a grid. However, detection of linear, net-shaped and reticulonodular structures in peripheral lung regions was significantly worse when a grid was used with an equivalent exposure level. Concerning the interpretation of images obtained from the normal and obese phantom models, no substantial differences were observed.

CONCLUSION

a marked improvement in diagnostic performance could be achieved by means of the use of an additional antiscatter grid and an equivalent detector dose. However, when the same exposure was used, images acquired with the grid allowed a better detection of mediastinal structures although a worse performance was evident in radiolucent lung regions. Therefore, the routine use of a grid without increased exposure is not recommended.

[Microbial emissions in collection of residential garbage]

Two exemplary investigations with different questions were carried out in Munich and Stuttgart by sampling bio-aerosols due to and during the collection and emptying of different types of waste bins. The emissions were regarded qualitatively and quantitatively, in order to answer the question, whether and to which amount differences of bio-aerosol emissions occurred due to the kind of wastes collected. The lowest emissions of airborne microorganisms were found during the collection of the paper waste fraction. In comparison, the amounts of them during the collection of unseparated household wastes as well as source separated bio-wastes and the remaining residual waste fraction were higher. Between the three latter, no significant differences could be found, only a tendency of higher values for the thermotolerant mould A. fumigatus during the collection of bio- and residual wastes was observed. Maybe this was caused by special features of the different sampling locations, but it could also be due to the longer collection intervals (bio- and residual wastes were partially collected every two weeks, unseparated wastes every week).

CT scanning of the paranasal sinuses: axial helical CT with reconstruction in the coronal direction versus coronal helical CT

Paranasal sinuses of 52 patients with sinusitis, tumours or fibrous dysplasia were scanned. Axially acquired spiral data were obtained and reconstructed coronally. Four radiologists compared the two sets of images. They evaluated the diagnostic quality for visualization of the ostiomeatal unit, infundibulum, infraorbital canal, inflammatory disease, fine osseous lamellae and presence of amalgam or step artefacts. Two test phantoms were scanned for both techniques and lens dose was measured. Statistical significant differences in the diagnostic quality of the representation of the fine osseous structures in the paranasal sinuses, attributable to step artefacts were found in the coronally reconstructed images (p < 0.001). However, there was no amalgam and almost no motion artefacts in the reconstructed images. Interobserver correlation was r = 0.953 versus 0.956 for inflammatory disease, r = 0.816 versus 0.852 for artefacts, and r = 0.596 versus 0.547 for fine osseous lamellae in coronally acquired or axially acquired and reconstructed images, respectively. Lens dose was measured between 11.8 mGy and 13.8 mGy for axially acquired and reconstructed images. The advantage of axially acquired, coronally reconstructed images is the absence of artefacts attributable to amalgam and fewer motion artefacts. Axially acquired, coronally reconstructed images are inferior to coronal helical CT images, because of step artefacts, when it comes to evaluating the resolution of fine osseous structures. Nevertheless, reconstructed images are suitable as a investigatory procedure for patients with inflammatory disease who cannot maintain the prone position.
