Design and characterization of PANI/starch/Fe2O3 bio composite for wastewater remediation

A new synthesized polyaniline/starch/hematite bio composite (PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC) has been studied as an effective material for on-site water remediation. PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC was developed by combining the techniques of co-precipitation and interfacial polymerization in the presence of aqueous starch solution in an acidic medium under ultrasonic irradiation. The nano-morphologies and structures of the designed PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC were evaluated by various techniques relative to PANI and Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles. In single and multiple systems, PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC was evaluated as a possible adsorbent for different heavy metals, including As³⁺, Zn²⁺, and Co²⁺, relative to PANI and Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles. In terms of pH value, operating temperature, initial heavy metal concentration, contact time, adsorbent dose and competitive ions in the solutions, the adsorption process was optimized. For 92% overall adsorption of Co²⁺ and 100% overall adsorption of both As³⁺ and Zn²⁺, the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 60 and 120 min, respectively. In addition, adsorption thermodynamic analysis shows that the As³⁺ ions adsorption process was not random and the pseudo-second-order fitted with experimental results. Moreover, PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC was evaluated as an antibacterial agent against Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella typhimurium) and Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus, Aureus Clinical isolate and Bacillus subtilis). The reported performances indicated that the PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC is a potent candidate for industrial water bioremediation.

Preparation and characterization of MCM-48/nickel oxide composite as an efficient and reusable catalyst for the assessment of photocatalytic activity

Mesoporous silica (MCM-48) was synthesized and used as a catalyst for supporting the nickel oxide photocatalyst. The loading of nickel oxide on MCM-48 results in a considerable reduction in the bandgap energy to 2.4 eV. MCM-48 was used as a catalyst and back-supporter for the nickel oxide to enhance its photocatalytic properties along with adsorption capacity. Therefore, the adsorption capacity of MCM-48/Ni₂O₃ was enhanced by 17.5% and 32.2% compared to Ni₂O₃ and MCM-48, respectively. Furthermore, the percentage of photocatalytic degradation was improved by approximately 68.2% relative to the free-standing Ni₂O₃. The MCM-48/Ni₂O₃ proved the chemisorption adsorption mechanism that happens in multilayer form through the heterogeneous surface. This through fixing such Ni₂O₃ particles over the nanoporous topography to provide more exposed hot adsorption and photocatalytic sites for the incident light photons. Therefore, supporting Ni₂O₃ catalytic particles onto MCM-48 produces a new category of photocatalytic systems with promising active centers for the efficient degradation of Congo red dye molecules.

Photocatalytic removal of Congo red dye using MCM-48/Ni2O3 composite synthesized based on silica gel extracted from rice husk ash; fabrication and application

MCM-48 mesoporous silica was successfully synthesized from silica gel extracted from rice husk ash and loaded by nickel oxide (Ni₂O₃). The resulted composite was characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and UV-vis spectrophotometer. The role of MCM-48 as catalyst support in enhancing the photocatalytic properties of nickel oxide was evaluated through the photocatalytic degradation of Congo red dye under visible light source. MCM-48 as catalyst support for Ni₂O₃ shows considerable enhancement in the adsorption capacity by 17% and 29% higher than the adsorption capacity of MCM-48 and Ni₂O₃, respectively. Additionally, the photocatalytic degradation percentage increased by about 64% relative to the degradation percentage using Ni₂O₃ as a single component. The adsorption mechanism of MCM-48/Ni₂O₃ is chemisorption process of multilayer form. The using of MCM-48 as catalyst support for Ni₂O₃ enhanced the adsorption capacity and the photocatalytic degradation through increasing the surface area and prevents the nickel oxide particles from agglomeration. This was done through fixing nickel oxide particles throughout the porous structure which providing more exposed active adsorption sites and active photocatalyst sites for the incident photons. Based on the obtained results, supporting of nickel oxide particles onto MCM-48 are promising active centers for the degradation of Congo red dye molecules.

Efficacy of electromyography and nerve conduction velocity monitoring in surgical management of terminal lipoma in children

Background: the prognosis of Terminal lipomas is better than that of other sites and pathology especially their management nowadays became clearer with better surgical outcome due to advancement of surgical tools and neurophysiology study. Objective: to assess the outcome of excision of terminal lipomyelomeningocele and reconstruction of the neural tube. Methods: From 2002 to 2016, 32 cases of terminal lipomyelomeningocele in Mansoura university hospital, insurance hospital and El Ahrar specialized center, the age of the cases ranged between 10 days and 4,3 years underwent surgical management of total or near-total lipoma excision and neural tube reformation with minimum follow up of 6 months. Results: according to system which applied to show the success of the operations, Of the 32 patients, 9 cases represent (28.1%) showed total excision of the lipoma; 17 patients represent (53.1%) had 25 mm3 of lipoma or less and 6 patients represent (18.75%) had 26 mm3 of fat or more. The neurological and urological complications was about 25%, while other complications like cerebrospinal fluid leak, wound disruption and infection was 9.4%. The surgical morbidity was comparable with the published papers. Conclusion: the excision of terminal lipomyelomeningocele and recreation of the neural tube by monitoring throughout EMG & NCV with low surgical morbidity and better results than leaving them without management or surgical interference without neurophysiological monitoring.
