Abstract
We report on a measurement of astrophysical tau neutrinos with 9.7 yr of IceCube data. Using convolutional neural networks trained on images derived from simulated events, seven candidate ν_{τ} events were found with visible energies ranging from roughly 20 TeV to 1 PeV and a median expected parent ν_{τ} energy of about 200 TeV. Considering backgrounds from astrophysical and atmospheric neutrinos, and muons from π^{±}/K^{±} decays in atmospheric air showers, we obtain a total estimated background of about 0.5 events, dominated by non-ν_{τ} astrophysical neutrinos. Thus, we rule out the absence of astrophysical ν_{τ} at the 5σ level. The measured astrophysical ν_{τ} flux is consistent with expectations based on previously published IceCube astrophysical neutrino flux measurements and neutrino oscillations.

Abstract
The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, is unknown. Because of deflection by interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays produced within the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, cosmic rays interact with matter near their sources and during propagation, which produces high-energy neutrinos. We searched for neutrino emission using machine learning techniques applied to 10 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By comparing diffuse emission models to a background-only hypothesis, we identified neutrino emission from the Galactic plane at the 4.5σ level of significance. The signal is consistent with diffuse emission of neutrinos from the Milky Way but could also arise from a population of unresolved point sources.

Abstract
A supermassive black hole, obscured by cosmic dust, powers the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068. Neutrinos, which rarely interact with matter, could provide information on the galaxy’s active core. We searched for neutrino emission from astrophysical objects using data recorded with the IceCube neutrino detector between 2011 and 2020. The positions of 110 known gamma-ray sources were individually searched for neutrino detections above atmospheric and cosmic backgrounds. We found that NGC 1068 has an excess of

neutrinos at tera–electron volt energies, with a global significance of 4.2σ, which we interpret as associated with the active galaxy. The flux of high-energy neutrinos that we measured from NGC 1068 is more than an order of magnitude higher than the upper limit on emissions of tera–electron volt gamma rays from this source.

Search for Unstable Sterile Neutrinos with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 129:151801. Abstract
We present a search for an unstable sterile neutrino by looking for a resonant signal in eight years of atmospheric ν_{μ} data collected from 2011 to 2019 at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Both the (stable) three-neutrino and the 3+1 sterile neutrino models are disfavored relative to the unstable sterile neutrino model, though with p values of 2.8% and 0.81%, respectively, we do not observe evidence for 3+1 neutrinos with neutrino decay. The best-fit parameters for the sterile neutrino with decay model from this study are Δm_{41}^{2}=6.7_{-2.5}^{+3.9} eV^{2}, sin^{2}2θ_{24}=0.33_{-0.17}^{+0.20}, and g^{2}=2.5π±1.5π, where g is the decay-mediating coupling. The preferred regions of the 3+1+decay model from short-baseline oscillation searches are excluded at 90% C.L.

Abstract
We report a search for nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI) using eight years of TeV-scale atmospheric muon neutrino data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By reconstructing incident energies and zenith angles for atmospheric neutrino events, this analysis presents unified confidence intervals for the NSI parameter ε_{μτ}. The best-fit value is consistent with no NSI at a p value of 25.2%. With a 90% confidence interval of -0.0041≤ε_{μτ}≤0.0031 along the real axis and similar strength in the complex plane, this result is the strongest constraint on any NSI parameter from any oscillation channel to date.

Abstract
We present an all-sky 90% confidence level upper limit on the cosmic flux of relativistic magnetic monopoles using 2886 days of IceCube data. The analysis was optimized for monopole speeds between 0.750c and 0.995c, without any explicit restriction on the monopole mass. We constrain the flux of relativistic cosmic magnetic monopoles to a level below 2.0×10^{-19} cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} over the majority of the targeted speed range. This result constitutes the most strict upper limit to date for magnetic monopoles with β≳0.8 and up to β∼0.995 and fills the gap between existing limits on the cosmic flux of nonrelativistic and ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles.

Abstract
Pembrolizumab is an immunoglobulin G4 isotype antibody that targets the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) receptor of lymphocytes. It is used in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The safety and efficacy of immunotherapy for autoimmune disease are currently unknown;immune-related adverse events induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been reported. We report a case of severe colitis induced by the administration of pembrolizumab for pulmonary adenocarcinoma in a patient with ulcerative colitis. A 72-year-old man with a 3-year history of ulcerative colitis maintained clinical remission with mesalazine. The recurrence of lung adenocarcinoma was diagnosed and treated with pembrolizumab as second-line treatment. Diarrhea and bloody stool recurred 5 months after the first administration of pembrolizumab. The colitis did not respond to corticosteroids and infliximab. Because of the recurrence of ulcerative colitis, treatment of the lung adenocarcinoma was discontinued, and the patient died 1 year after the first administration of pembrolizumab. Few cases of severe colitis induced by the administration of pembrolizumab in patients with ulcerative colitis have been reported. This case suggests that the clinical stratification of autoimmune disease and typical standards of effectiveness of treatment are needed for patients with autoimmune disease who are treated with ICIs.

Abstract
AIMS In this study, volatile compounds released from mycelia of some aromatic mushrooms were investigated for their inhibitory activity against plant-pathogenic bacteria and fungi. METHODS AND RESULTS A screening revealed that volatile compounds from mycelia of Porostereum spadiceum remarkably inhibited the colony formation of plant-pathogenic bacteria, including Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis and Ralstonia solanacearum while also inhibiting the conidial germination of plant-pathogenic fungi including Alternaria brassicicola and Colletotrichum orbiculare. The volatile compounds were isolated from the culture filtrate of P. spadiceum, and 3,4-dichloro-4-methoxybenzaldehyde (DCMB) was identified as a major compound. DCMB significantly inhibited bacterial colonization at 10 μg ml-1 and fungal conidial germination at 0·1-1 μg ml-1 as a vapour. CONCLUSIONS This is the first report on the production of the volatile compound DCMB by P. spadiceum and on the antimicrobial activity of DCMB against plant-pathogenic bacteria and fungi at low concentrations. It may be possible to use the compound as an agent for protecting crops from bacterial and fungal diseases during cultivation and storage. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study provides an understanding of antimicrobial activity of the mushroom volatile compound that may be useful as a novel biological control agent for protecting various plant diseases.

Abstract
The results of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using eight years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory are presented. A total of 305 735 muon neutrino events are analyzed in reconstructed energy-zenith space to test for signatures of a matter-enhanced oscillation that would occur given a sterile neutrino state with a mass-squared differences between 0.01 and 100 eV^{2}. The best-fit point is found to be at sin^{2}(2θ_{24})=0.10 and Δm_{41}^{2}=4.5 eV^{2}, which is consistent with the no sterile neutrino hypothesis with a p value of 8.0%.

Abstract
We report on the first measurement of the astrophysical neutrino flux using particle showers (cascades) in IceCube data from 2010-2015. Assuming standard oscillations, the astrophysical neutrinos in this dedicated cascade sample are dominated (∼90%) by electron and tau flavors. The flux, observed in the sensitive energy range from 16 TeV to 2.6 PeV, is consistent with a single power-law model as expected from Fermi-type acceleration of high energy particles at astrophysical sources. We find the flux spectral index to be γ=2.53±0.07 and a flux normalization for each neutrino flavor of ϕ_{astro}=1.66_{-0.27}^{+0.25} at E_{0}=100 TeV, in agreement with IceCube's complementary muon neutrino results and with all-neutrino flavor fit results. In the measured energy range we reject spectral indices γ≤2.28 at ≥3σ significance level. Because of high neutrino energy resolution and low atmospheric neutrino backgrounds, this analysis provides the most detailed characterization of the neutrino flux at energies below ∼100 TeV compared to previous IceCube results. Results from fits assuming more complex neutrino flux models suggest a flux softening at high energies and a flux hardening at low energies (p value ≥0.06). The sizable and smooth flux measured below ∼100 TeV remains a puzzle. In order to not violate the isotropic diffuse gamma-ray background as measured by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, it suggests the existence of astrophysical neutrino sources characterized by dense environments which are opaque to gamma rays.

Hepatocellular carcinoma in an adult patient with congenital absence of the portal vein type II: A case report. JGH OPEN 2020; 4:766-768. Abstract
Congenital absence of the portal vein (CAPV) is a rare malformation in which intestinal and splenic venous blood bypasses the liver and drains into systemic veins. CAPV is classified into two types based on the absence (type I) or presence (type II) of portal venous flow into the hepatic parenchyma and is associated with multiple other anomalies such as usually benign hepatic tumors. There have been only two case reports describing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with CAPV type II to date. We report the third such patient. A 50‐year‐old woman was referred to our hospital for management of a giant hepatic tumor. Contrast‐enhanced computed tomography (CECT) indicated a huge mass occupying the right lobe of the liver; the radiological diagnosis was HCC. CECT also demonstrated that the superior mesenteric vein (SMV) and the splenic vein (SpV) joined to form a shunt draining into the left renal vein and that a hypoplastic portal vein branched from the confluence of the SMV and SpV and drained into the liver, indicating that the CAPV was type II. Liver resection was successfully performed to treat the HCC, and the pathological diagnosis was well‐differentiated HCC. Seven months after the operation, a recurrent small HCC was detected and treated with radiofrequency ablation without complications. The patient has been carefully followed for 6 months to date without any evidence of further recurrence. Patients with CAPV are predisposed to developing HCC and require close surveillance.

Abstract
This Letter presents the results from pointlike neutrino source searches using ten years of IceCube data collected between April 6, 2008 and July 10, 2018. We evaluate the significance of an astrophysical signal from a pointlike source looking for an excess of clustered neutrino events with energies typically above ∼1 TeV among the background of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We perform a full-sky scan, a search within a selected source catalog, a catalog population study, and three stacked Galactic catalog searches. The most significant point in the northern hemisphere from scanning the sky is coincident with the Seyfert II galaxy NGC 1068, which was included in the source catalog search. The excess at the coordinates of NGC 1068 is inconsistent with background expectations at the level of 2.9σ after accounting for statistical trials from the entire catalog. The combination of this result along with excesses observed at the coordinates of three other sources, including TXS 0506+056, suggests that, collectively, correlations with sources in the northern catalog are inconsistent with background at 3.3σ significance. The southern catalog is consistent with background. These results, all based on searches for a cumulative neutrino signal integrated over the 10 years of available data, motivate further study of these and similar sources, including time-dependent analyses, multimessenger correlations, and the possibility of stronger evidence with coming upgrades to the detector.

Abstract
Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is widely accepted as the operation of choice for refractory ulcerative colitis (UC), UC with dysplasia or cancer, or familial adenomatous polyposis. Pouchitis is the most frequent complication after IPAA for UC. Although the pathogenesis of pouchitis remains unclear, current evidence suggests that dysbiosis and mucosal immune response are important mechanisms. Antibiotics are the first-line treatment for the condition, but some patients develop chronic refractory pouchitis. Such cases can be treated with regimens such as longer courses of antibiotic combinations, mesalazine, corticosteroids, probiotics, or biologics. But if pouch inflammation is not ameliorated, a permanent ileostomy may be required. A 40-year-old man had undergone IPAA for UC and was diagnosed with pouchitis according to the Pouchitis Disease Activity Index. Antibiotics, mesalazine, and corticosteroids were given, but the inflammation was difficult to control. He developed chronic refractory pouchitis associated with perianal abscesses and anal fistulae. Following a seton procedure for fistulae, adalimumab (ADA) was administered. After 42 weeks, the ulcers in the pouch became scarred, and the anal fistulae were closed endoscopically. After remission was induced, it has been maintained. ADA is a fully human anti-tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) monoclonal antibody that has been successfully used to treat refractory Crohn disease of the ileoanal pouch. Although some studies report that infliximab, a chimeric anti-TNF-α monoclonal antibody, is efficacious in patients with refractory pouchitis, clinical evidence for the use of ADA is limited. This case illustrates achievement of induction and maintenance of remission of refractory pouchitis with ADA. It is possible that patients with this condition can avoid a permanent ileostomy with anti-TNF-α therapy. In the near future, further study of long-term clinical outcomes of anti-TNF-α therapy is expected.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the efficacy and safety of all-oral direct-acting antiviral treatments in patients coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV. METHODS In all, 35 patients with HCV/HIV coinfection (22 patients with HCV genotype 1 infection, 6 with genotype 2, and 7 with genotype 3) were treated with sofosbuvir and ledipasvir (for genotype 1 patients) or sofosbuvir and ribavirin (for genotypes 2 and 3). Sustained virological response (SVR) at 24 weeks after end of treatment and adverse events were assessed. RESULTS The overall SVR rate was 91.4% (32/35). One patient with genotype 1 infection discontinued treatment on day 2 due to severe headache, which subsided after the cessation of medication; all other patients completed their treatment without severe adverse events. Two patients who had a relapse of HCV were infected with a genotype 3 strain. We observed hyperbilirubinemia in a patient with genotype 3, who was under antiretroviral therapy including atazanavir. He completed the treatment and achieved SVR. CONCLUSION Direct-acting antiviral treatment for patients coinfected with HCV/HIV is as effective as in patients infected only with HCV. It was generally well tolerated, except in one patient who discontinued the treatment due to severe headache.

Abstract
AIM Ongoing hepatitis A outbreaks among men who have sex with men (MSM) have been reported worldwide, mainly in Europe, since 2016. In Japan, there has been an increase in the number of notified hepatitis A cases since January 2018, most of which were suspected to have been transmitted through homosexual contact. In this paper, we describe the current outbreak situation of hepatitis A among MSM. METHODS Between March and July 2018, 13 cases of hepatitis A were identified in our hospital. All cases were identified as MSM. Data on clinical and laboratory findings and therapies were collected from medical records. Serum or stool samples were obtained from 13 patients and subjected to sequence analysis. RESULTS Of all patients, 12 reported to have male-to-male homosexual contact within 7 weeks prior to symptom onset, and 6 visited sex-on-premises venues in the same area. Furthermore, 12 patients were infected with HIV and consequently received antiretroviral therapy with sustained viral suppression. Ten patients received pulsed methylprednisolone therapy. Plasma exchange was additionally carried out in one patient. All patients received inpatient hospital care and were discharged alive. Sequence information, which was available in all cases, showed that the hepatitis A virus strain was identical to the EuroPride strain (RIVM-HAV16-090). CONCLUSIONS Results of sequence analysis suggest that the ongoing hepatitis A outbreak among MSM in Japan is linked to the 2016 European outbreaks. A vaccination program is urgently required for high-risk populations to control this ongoing outbreak.

Abstract
High-energy neutrino emission has been predicted for several short-lived astrophysical transients including gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), core-collapse supernovae with choked jets, and neutron star mergers. IceCube's optical and x-ray follow-up program searches for such transient sources by looking for two or more muon neutrino candidates in directional coincidence and arriving within 100 s. The measured rate of neutrino alerts is consistent with the expected rate of chance coincidences of atmospheric background events and no likely electromagnetic counterparts have been identified in Swift follow-up observations. Here, we calculate generic bounds on the neutrino flux of short-lived transient sources. Assuming an E^{-2.5} neutrino spectrum, we find that the neutrino flux of rare sources, like long gamma-ray bursts, is constrained to <5% of the detected astrophysical flux and the energy released in neutrinos (100 GeV to 10 PeV) by a median bright GRB-like source is <10^{52.5} erg. For a harder E^{-2.13} neutrino spectrum up to 30% of the flux could be produced by GRBs and the allowed median source energy is <10^{52} erg. A hypothetical population of transient sources has to be more common than 10^{-5} Mpc^{-3} yr^{-1} (5×10^{-8} Mpc^{-3} yr^{-1} for the E^{-2.13} spectrum) to account for the complete astrophysical neutrino flux.

Prognostic factor analysis in third-line chemotherapy for elderly patients with metastatic gastric cancer. J Clin Oncol 2019. Abstract
82 Background: Recently, the proportion of elderly patients (pts) with metastatic gastric cancer (mGC) has increased in Japan. Survival benefits of salvage treatment after second-line chemotherapy (CTX) for mGC were shown in several prospective studies. However, the role of salvage treatment in elderly pts remains controversial. Methods: We reviewed 185 pts with mGC who received palliative CTX aged ≥ 70 years at our institution between April 2007 and March 2018. Eligibility criteria were as follows: PS 0-2, refractory to first-line and second-line CTX. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic factors that affected overall survival for elderly pts with mGC, univariate and multivariate analyses were performed on the baseline factors at the beginning of third-line CTX. Results: Of all, 71 pts were eligible. Median age was 75 years (71-85). Median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) for third-line CTX were 3.2 and 7.5 months, respectively and an overall response rate and disease control rate were 4.2% and 43.7%, respectively. In univariate analysis, the following four factors were identified to have prognostic significance: performance status (PS) (ECOG 0–1 or 2), serum albumin level (< 3.5 or ≥ 3.5 g/dl), serum LDH level (≤ 240 or > 240 IU/l), PFS under second-line CTX (< 3 or ≥ 3 months). Multivariate analysis found three prognostic factors affecting poor survival following third-line CTX: PS of 2 (hazard ratio (HR) 8.89, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.99–20.2; P = 0.001), serum LDH level > 240 IU/l (HR 2.75, 95% CI 1.48–5.05; P = 0.002) and median PFS under second-line CTX of < 3 months (HR 1.89, 95% CI 1.01–3.43; P = 0.045). A prognostic index was constructed, dividing pts into low- (0 factor), intermediate- (1-2 risk factors), or high- (3 risk factors) risk groups. Median OS for each group were 12.6, 6.0 and 3.0 months, respectively ( P < 0.001). Conclusions: This analysis suggests that some clinicopathologic factors might be helpful in identifying the subgroup of elderly pts most likely to benefit from third-line CTX for metastatic gastric cancer.

Abstract
With the observation of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, interest has risen in models of PeV-mass decaying dark matter particles to explain the observed flux. We present two dedicated experimental analyses to test this hypothesis. One analysis uses 6 years of IceCube data focusing on muon neutrino 'track' events from the Northern Hemisphere, while the second analysis uses 2 years of 'cascade' events from the full sky. Known background components and the hypothetical flux from unstable dark matter are fitted to the experimental data. Since no significant excess is observed in either analysis, lower limits on the lifetime of dark matter particles are derived: we obtain the strongest constraint to date, excluding lifetimes shorter than10 28 s at 90% CL for dark matter masses above 10 TeV .

Abstract
143 Background: Recently, the proportion of elderly patients (pts) with advanced gastric cancer has increased in Japan. Survival benefits of second-line chemotherapy (CTX) such as weekly paclitaxel (PTX)±Ramucirumab (RAM) or irinotecan (CPT) were shown in several phase 3 trials for metastatic gastric cancer (mGC). However, efficacy and prognostic factors in the second line CTX for elderly pts are not well studied. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed for mGC pts aged ≥ 70 years who underwent PTX+RAM, PTX or CPT as second-line CTX. Eligibility criteria were as follows: PS 0-2, refractory to an S-1containing CTX. Response rate (RR), overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and adverse events (AEs) were evaluated. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine prognostic factors of survival. Results: There were 250 pts with mGC treated at our institution between April 2007 and March 2017. Of all, total of 85 pts were eligible. Median age was 75 years (71-85). The RR was 28.0% in the PTX+RAM group (n=28), 17.2% in the PTX group (n=29) and 18.5% in the CPT group (n=28). Median PFS was 5.1 months(M) and MST was 12.2 M in the PTX+RAM group, compared with 4.1 M and 9.7 M in the PTX group, or 3.3M and 9.8M in the CPT group. The ORR, PFS and OS were better in the PTX+RAM group though differences between groups were not statistically significant. Grade 3 or higher non-hematological AEs such as fatigue or diarrhea were more frequent in the CPT group on the other hand, hematological AEs were more frequent in the PTX+RAM group. On multivariate analysis, PS (HR,3.13; 95%CI, 1.60-5.77), LDH (HR,3.19; 95%CI, 1.80-5.57), and CEA (HR,2.35; 95%CI, 1.30-4.16) were found to be significant prognostic factors for elderly pts with mGC who underwent second-line CTX. Conclusions: PTX+RAM therapy seemed to be more effective than the other regimens. Furthermore, this analysis for prognostic factors may help clinicians to better select elderly pts who may benefit from a second-line CTX.

Abstract
IceCube is a neutrino observatory deployed in the glacial ice at the geographic South Pole. The ν μ energy unfolding described in this paper is based on data taken with IceCube in its 79-string configuration. A sample of muon neutrino charged-current interactions with a purity of 99.5% was selected by means of a multivariate classification process based on machine learning. The subsequent unfolding was performed using the software Truee. The resulting spectrum covers an E ν -range of more than four orders of magnitude from 125 GeV to 3.2 PeV. Compared to the Honda atmospheric neutrino flux model, the energy spectrum shows an excess of more than 1.9 σ in four adjacent bins for neutrino energies E ν ≥ 177.8 TeV . The obtained spectrum is fully compatible with previous measurements of the atmospheric neutrino flux and recent IceCube measurements of a flux of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos.

Abstract
We report constraints on the sources of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) above 10^{9} GeV, based on an analysis of seven years of IceCube data. This analysis efficiently selects very high- energy neutrino-induced events which have deposited energies from 5×10^{5} GeV to above 10^{11} GeV. Two neutrino-induced events with an estimated deposited energy of (2.6±0.3)×10^{6} GeV, the highest neutrino energy observed so far, and (7.7±2.0)×10^{5} GeV were detected. The atmospheric background-only hypothesis of detecting these events is rejected at 3.6σ. The hypothesis that the observed events are of cosmogenic origin is also rejected at >99% CL because of the limited deposited energy and the nonobservation of events at higher energy, while their observation is consistent with an astrophysical origin. Our limits on cosmogenic neutrino fluxes disfavor the UHECR sources having a cosmological evolution stronger than the star formation rate, e.g., active galactic nuclei and γ-ray bursts, assuming proton-dominated UHECRs. Constraints on UHECR sources including mixed and heavy UHECR compositions are obtained for models of neutrino production within UHECR sources. Our limit disfavors a significant part of parameter space for active galactic nuclei and new-born pulsar models. These limits on the ultrahigh-energy neutrino flux models are the most stringent to date.

Abstract
The IceCube neutrino telescope at the South Pole has measured the atmospheric muon neutrino spectrum as a function of zenith angle and energy in the approximate 320 GeV to 20 TeV range, to search for the oscillation signatures of light sterile neutrinos. No evidence for anomalous ν_{μ} or ν[over ¯]_{μ} disappearance is observed in either of two independently developed analyses, each using one year of atmospheric neutrino data. New exclusion limits are placed on the parameter space of the 3+1 model, in which muon antineutrinos experience a strong Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein-resonant oscillation. The exclusion limits extend to sin^{2}2θ_{24}≤0.02 at Δm^{2}∼0.3 eV^{2} at the 90% confidence level. The allowed region from global analysis of appearance experiments, including LSND and MiniBooNE, is excluded at approximately the 99% confidence level for the global best-fit value of |U_{e4}|^{2}.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Effects of collagen hydrolysate (CHD) on the oxidative capacity of the tibialis anterior muscle and the cortical and trabecular density of the femur were investigated in senescence-accelerated mouse prone 6 (SAMP6). METHODS Sixteen-week-old male SAMP6 mice were divided into control (CON) and CHD groups. The CON group was given normal water, while the CHD group was given water containing CHD. Fibre cross-sectional areas (CSAs), fibre succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) staining intensity, and SDH activity of the tibialis anterior muscle were determined at 42 and 60 weeks of age. The cortical and trabecular density of the femur and serum osteocalcin levels were also determined. RESULTS The fibre SDH staining intensity and muscle SDH activity were higher in the CHD group at 60 weeks of age than in the age-matched CON group. The cortical and trabecular density and serum osteocalcin levels were greater in the CHD group at 60 weeks of age than in the age-matched CON group. CONCLUSION CHD inhibited th age-induced decrease in muscle oxidative capacity and bone density of SAMP6 mice. There is a possibility that CHD is effective for inhibition of age-induced degeneration in the musculoskeletal system.

A case report of a duodenal adenocarcinoma: a complication with Crohn's disease. NIHON SHOKAKIBYO GAKKAI ZASSHI = THE JAPANESE JOURNAL OF GASTRO-ENTEROLOGY 2016; 113:441-50. Abstract
The prevalence of Crohn's disease (CD) in Japan is increasing, and so is the incidence of colorectal and small bowel cancers associated with CD. However, few reports have described the malignant transformation of duodenal lesions; moreover, such a diagnosis is rarely possible preoperatively. We present a case of malignant degeneration in the duodenal mucosa associated with CD. A 54-year-old man had been receiving treatment for CD for more than 20 years. Seven years ago, he was diagnosed with duodenal stenosis related to CD. He was asymptomatic, and biopsy results from the proximal stricture showed inflammatory changes without malignant transformation. The lesion was then monitored during follow-up. In 2013, he underwent an endoscopy, which revealed an ulcerated, nodular mucosa, immediately proximal to a high-grade obstruction of the descending duodenum. A biopsy of the ulcer lesion confirmed a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. The patient then underwent duodenopancreatectomy. Histopathological results from the resected duodenum confirmed a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma that had invaded the subserosa. The patient recovered, and no recurrence has been observed. Although the duodenum can be accessed without difficulty during endoscopy, it is challenging to preoperatively diagnose malignant transformation. There are only four reported cases of duodenal cancer stemming from CD-associated stricture, and only one of them received a preoperative diagnosis of malignancy based on endoscopic biopsy results. Progressive duodenal narrowing and ulceration in patients with CD should indicate a need for careful endoscopic evaluation and biopsy in order to exclude malignant degeneration of Crohn's duodenitis. Early diagnosis of cases of CD-associated cancers is necessary. We report the features of a rare and illustrative case of duodenal adenocarcinoma in a patient with CD.

Abstract
Results from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory have recently provided compelling evidence for the existence of a high energy astrophysical neutrino flux utilizing a dominantly Southern Hemisphere data set consisting primarily of ν(e) and ν(τ) charged-current and neutral-current (cascade) neutrino interactions. In the analysis presented here, a data sample of approximately 35,000 muon neutrinos from the Northern sky is extracted from data taken during 659.5 days of live time recorded between May 2010 and May 2012. While this sample is composed primarily of neutrinos produced by cosmic ray interactions in Earth's atmosphere, the highest energy events are inconsistent with a hypothesis of solely terrestrial origin at 3.7σ significance. These neutrinos can, however, be explained by an astrophysical flux per neutrino flavor at a level of Φ(E(ν))=9.9(-3.4)(+3.9)×10(-19) GeV(-1) cm(-2) sr(-1) s(-1)(E(ν)/100 TeV(-2), consistent with IceCube's Southern-Hemisphere-dominated result. Additionally, a fit for an astrophysical flux with an arbitrary spectral index is performed. We find a spectral index of 2.2(-0.2)(+0.2), which is also in good agreement with the Southern Hemisphere result.

Abstract
A diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos above 100 TeV has been observed at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Here we extend this analysis to probe the astrophysical flux down to 35 TeV and analyze its flavor composition by classifying events as showers or tracks. Taking advantage of lower atmospheric backgrounds for showerlike events, we obtain a shower-biased sample containing 129 showers and 8 tracks collected in three years from 2010 to 2013. We demonstrate consistency with the (fe:fμ:fτ)⊕≈(1:1:1)⊕ flavor ratio at Earth commonly expected from the averaged oscillations of neutrinos produced by pion decay in distant astrophysical sources. Limits are placed on nonstandard flavor compositions that cannot be produced by averaged neutrino oscillations but could arise in exotic physics scenarios. A maximally tracklike composition of (0:1:0)⊕ is excluded at 3.3σ, and a purely showerlike composition of (1:0:0)⊕ is excluded at 2.3σ.

Abstract
We present the development and application of a generic analysis scheme for the measurement of neutrino spectra with the IceCube detector. This scheme is based on regularized unfolding, preceded by an event selection which uses a Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance algorithm to select the relevant variables and a random forest for the classification of events. The analysis has been developed using IceCube data from the 59-string configuration of the detector. 27,771 neutrino candidates were detected in 346 days of livetime. A rejection of 99.9999 % of the atmospheric muon background is achieved. The energy spectrum of the atmospheric neutrino flux is obtained using the TRUEE unfolding program. The unfolded spectrum of atmospheric muon neutrinos covers an energy range from 100 GeV to 1 PeV. Compared to the previous measurement using the detector in the 40-string configuration, the analysis presented here, extends the upper end of the atmospheric neutrino spectrum by more than a factor of two, reaching an energy region that has not been previously accessed by spectral measurements.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to determine the role of morphological patterns seen on imaging in predicting hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence following transarterial chemoembolization therapy. METHODS Forty-seven patients from a single center who underwent transarterial chemoembolization to treat unresectable hepatocellular carcinomas between January 2011 and June 2012 were included in this study. We investigated whether the two pretreatment findings on computed tomography during hepatic arteriography (pattern 1, the single nodule pattern; pattern 2, at least one nodule showing the contiguous multinodular pattern) and other factors (age, sex, etiology, serum total bilirubin, serum albumin, prothrombin time, platelet count, serum level of protein induced by vitamin K absence/antagonist-II, serum α-fetoprotein, number of previous treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma, tumor number and maximum tumor size, presence of hypovascular lesions) could predict post-treatment recurrence. RESULTS In a univariate analysis using Cox's proportional hazards model, serum total bilirubin, the serum level of protein induced by vitamin K absence/antagonist-II (≤100 vs ≥101 mAU/mL), tumor morphology (pattern 1 vs 2) and tumor number (≤3 vs ≥4) showed statistical significance (≤0.05). In a multivariate analysis of these factors, morphology and tumor number showed significance. According to Kaplan-Meier estimation, the cumulative disease-free survival rates were significantly lower in patients with four or more lesions than in those with three or less lesions and in patients showing pattern 2 than in those showing pattern 1. CONCLUSION Patients with pattern 2 hepatocellular carcinoma and/or four or more lesions may have a relatively high recurrence rate after transarterial chemoembolization.

Abstract
Structural ceramics are typically used in polycrystalline form. It is well known that polycrystalline ceramics often show the intergranular fracture. To improve their mechanical properties, transition metals can be used as dopants into a bulk material, which tend to segregate into the grain boundaries[1]. However, the effect of dopant segregation on grain boundary fracture is still uncertain. In order to investigate the fracture behavior of a dopant-segregated grain boundary, we observed the crack propagation of a Zr-doped alumina grain boundary by in situ nanoindentation in a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and characterized the fracture surface by scanning TEM (STEM).An alumina bicrystal with a Zr-doped Σ13 grain boundary was fabricated by diffusion bonding at 1500(o)C for 10 hours in air, where a face of one crystal was coated by Zr metal in advance to the bonding (Fig. 1a). A TEM sample was prepared from the bicrystal by mechanical grinding and Ar ion milling. For in situ indentation, the sample had a free edge perpendicular to the grain boundary (Fig. 1b). The indentation experiment was performed by using a double-tilt indentation holder (Nanofactory) and JEM-2010 (200kV, JEOL). The fracture surface was further observed by high angle annular dark field (HAADF) STEM (ARM-200F, 200kV, JEOL).jmicro;63/suppl_1/i20-a/DFU064F1F1DFU064F1Fig. 1.(a) Schematic illustrations of bicrystal fabrication by diffusion bonding and (b) Bright field TEM image showing the geometric arrangement of the in situ nanoindentation experiment In the in situ TEM nanoindentation experiment, at first a crack was introduced in bulk close to the grain boundary and propagated with the amount of indentation. After the crack reached the grain boundary, it preferentially propagated along the grain boundary. To identify the crack pass at the atomic level, the STEM analysis was performed. We found that three-atomic-layer Zr was formed in the unbroken region of the grain boundary, whereas one to three Zr layers remained on the fracture surface. This indicates that the crack propagated within the segregation region of Zr in the grain boundary. In the presentation, we will discuss the crack propagation behavior and the atomic structure of the fracture surfaces in detail.

Abstract
A search for high-energy neutrinos interacting within the IceCube detector between 2010 and 2012 provided the first evidence for a high-energy neutrino flux of extraterrestrial origin. Results from an analysis using the same methods with a third year (2012-2013) of data from the complete IceCube detector are consistent with the previously reported astrophysical flux in the 100 TeV-PeV range at the level of 10(-8) GeV cm-2 s-1 sr-1 per flavor and reject a purely atmospheric explanation for the combined three-year data at 5.7σ. The data are consistent with expectations for equal fluxes of all three neutrino flavors and with isotropic arrival directions, suggesting either numerous or spatially extended sources. The three-year data set, with a live time of 988 days, contains a total of 37 neutrino candidate events with deposited energies ranging from 30 to 2000 TeV. The 2000-TeV event is the highest-energy neutrino interaction ever observed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Factors contributing to the shift from the hepatic borderline lesion to overt hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were investigated. METHODOLOGY Ninety-five borderline nodules from 69 patients were followed-up for 6-55 (median 24) months. The borderline lesion was diagnosed when the CT image demonstrated low density in the portal phase and lacked enhancement in the arterial phase. RESULTS The shift to overt HCC was seen in 32 nodules from 27 patients. Using multivariate analysis, only size was a significant factor contributing to the shift to overt HCC (p = 0.009). The cumulative incidence of the shift to overt HCC was higher in nodules of ≥13 mm in size than in those of < 13 mm (p = 0.034). Among nodules of ≥13 mm, nodules showing iso density in the arterial phase and low density in the portal phase had a higher cumulative incidence of the shift to overt HCC than those showing low density in the arterial and portal phases on CT (p=0.007). CONCLUSIONS In hepatic borderline nodules diagnosed by CT, greater size, and iso density in the arterial phase and low density in the portal phase may be risk factors associated with the shift to overt HCC.

Abstract
We report on results of an all-sky search for high-energy neutrino events interacting within the IceCube neutrino detector conducted between May 2010 and May 2012. The search follows up on the previous detection of two PeV neutrino events, with improved sensitivity and extended energy coverage down to about 30 TeV. Twenty-six additional events were observed, substantially more than expected from atmospheric backgrounds. Combined, both searches reject a purely atmospheric origin for the 28 events at the 4σ level. These 28 events, which include the highest energy neutrinos ever observed, have flavors, directions, and energies inconsistent with those expected from the atmospheric muon and neutrino backgrounds. These properties are, however, consistent with generic predictions for an additional component of extraterrestrial origin.

Abstract
We present the first statistically significant detection of neutrino oscillations in the high-energy regime (>20 GeV) from an analysis of IceCube Neutrino Observatory data collected in 2010 and 2011. This measurement is made possible by the low-energy threshold of the DeepCore detector (~20 GeV) and benefits from the use of the IceCube detector as a veto against cosmic-ray-induced muon background. The oscillation signal was detected within a low-energy muon neutrino sample (20-100 GeV) extracted from data collected by DeepCore. A high-energy muon neutrino sample (100 GeV-10 TeV) was extracted from IceCube data to constrain systematic uncertainties. The disappearance of low-energy upward-going muon neutrinos was observed, and the nonoscillation hypothesis is rejected with more than 5σ significance. In a two-neutrino flavor formalism, our data are best described by the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters |Δm(32)(2)|=(2.3(-0.5)(+0.6))×10(-3) eV(2) and sin(2)(2θ(23))>0.93, and maximum mixing is favored.

First observation of PeV-energy neutrinos with IceCube. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2013; 111:021103. Abstract
We report on the observation of two neutrino-induced events which have an estimated deposited energy in the IceCube detector of 1.04±0.16 and 1.14±0.17 PeV, respectively, the highest neutrino energies observed so far. These events are consistent with fully contained particle showers induced by neutral-current ν(e,μ,τ) (ν(e,μ,τ)) or charged-current ν(e) (ν(e)) interactions within the IceCube detector. The events were discovered in a search for ultrahigh energy neutrinos using data corresponding to 615.9 days effective live time. The expected number of atmospheric background is 0.082±0.004(stat)(-0.057)(+0.041)(syst). The probability of observing two or more candidate events under the atmospheric background-only hypothesis is 2.9×10(-3) (2.8σ) taking into account the uncertainty on the expected number of background events. These two events could be a first indication of an astrophysical neutrino flux; the moderate significance, however, does not permit a definitive conclusion at this time.

Measurement of the atmospheric νe flux in IceCube. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2013; 110:151105. Abstract
We report the first measurement of the atmospheric electron neutrino flux in the energy range between approximately 80 GeV and 6 TeV, using data recorded during the first year of operation of IceCube's DeepCore low-energy extension. Techniques to identify neutrinos interacting within the DeepCore volume and veto muons originating outside the detector are demonstrated. A sample of 1029 events is observed in 281 days of data, of which 496±66(stat)±88(syst) are estimated to be cascade events, including both electron neutrino and neutral current events. The rest of the sample includes residual backgrounds due to atmospheric muons and charged current interactions of atmospheric muon neutrinos. The flux of the atmospheric electron neutrinos is consistent with models of atmospheric neutrinos in this energy range. This constitutes the first observation of electron neutrinos and neutral current interactions in a very large volume neutrino telescope optimized for the TeV energy range.
