Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of pseudoscalars in the μμbb and ττbb final states. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2024; 84:493. [PMID: 38757620 PMCID: PMC11093753 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-024-12727-4] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/20/2024] [Accepted: 03/25/2024] [Indexed: 05/18/2024]
Abstract
A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson (H ) with a mass of 125Ge V to a pair of light pseudoscalars a 1 is performed in final states where one pseudoscalar decays to two b quarks and the other to a pair of muons or τ leptons. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 Te V corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 recorded with the CMS detector is analyzed. No statistically significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level (CL ) on the Higgs boson branching fraction to μ μ b b and to τ τ b b , via a pair of a 1 s. The limits depend on the pseudoscalar mass m a 1 and are observed to be in the range (0.17-3.3) × 10 - 4 and (1.7-7.7) × 10 - 2 in the μ μ b b and τ τ b b final states, respectively. In the framework of models with two Higgs doublets and a complex scalar singlet (2HDM+S), the results of the two final states are combined to determine upper limits on the branching fraction B ( H → a 1 a 1 → ℓ ℓ b b ) at 95% CL , with ℓ being a muon or a τ lepton. For different types of 2HDM+S, upper bounds on the branching fraction B ( H → a 1 a 1 ) are extracted from the combination of the two channels. In most of the Type II 2HDM+S parameter space, B ( H → a 1 a 1 ) values above 0.23 are excluded at 95% CL for m a 1 values between 15 and 60Ge V .

Safety and Immunogenicity of an mRNA-Based hMPV/PIV3 Combination Vaccine in Seropositive Children. Pediatrics 2024:e2023064748. [PMID: 38738290 DOI: 10.1542/peds.2023-064748] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Accepted: 02/08/2024] [Indexed: 05/14/2024] Open
Abstract
OBJECTIVES Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) and parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV3) are common respiratory illnesses in children. The safety and immunogenicity of an investigational mRNA-based vaccine, mRNA-1653, encoding membrane-anchored fusion proteins of hMPV and PIV3, was evaluated in hMPV/PIV3-seropositive children. METHODS In this phase 1b randomized, observer-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-ranging study, hMPV/PIV3-seropositive children were enrolled sequentially into 2 dose levels of mRNA-1653 administered 2 months apart; children aged 12 to 36 months were randomized (1:1) to receive 10-μg of mRNA-1653 or placebo and children aged 12 to 59 months were randomized (3:1) to receive 30-μg of mRNA-1653 or placebo. RESULTS Overall, 27 participants aged 18 to 55 months were randomized; 15 participants received 10-μg of mRNA-1653 (n = 8) or placebo (n = 7), whereas 12 participants received 30-μg of mRNA-1653 (n = 9) or placebo (n = 3). mRNA-1653 was well-tolerated at both dose levels. The only reported solicited local adverse reaction was tenderness at injection site; solicited systemic adverse reactions included grade 1 or 2 chills, irritability, loss of appetite, and sleepiness. A single 10-μg or 30-μg mRNA-1653 injection increased hMPV and PIV3 neutralizing antibody titers (geometric mean fold-rise ratio over baseline: hMPV-A = 2.9-6.1; hMPV-B = 6.2-13.2; PIV3 = 2.8-3.0) and preF and postF binding antibody concentrations (geometric mean fold-rise ratio: hMPV preF = 5.3-6.1; postF = 4.6-6.5 and PIV3 preF = 13.9-14.2; postF = 11.0-12.1); a second injection did not further increase antibody levels in these seropositive children. Binding antibody responses were generally preF biased. CONCLUSIONS mRNA-1653 was well-tolerated and boosted hMPV and PIV3 antibody levels in seropositive children aged 12 to 59 months, supporting the continued development of mRNA-1653 or its components for the prevention of hMPV and PIV3.

Observation of WWγ Production and Search for Hγ Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 132:121901. [PMID: 38579207 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.132.121901] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/08/2023] [Accepted: 01/31/2024] [Indexed: 04/07/2024]
Abstract
The observation of WWγ production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1} is presented. The observed (expected) significance is 5.6 (5.1) standard deviations. Events are selected by requiring exactly two leptons (one electron and one muon) of opposite charge, moderate missing transverse momentum, and a photon. The measured fiducial cross section for WWγ is 5.9±0.8(stat)±0.8(syst)±0.7(modeling) fb, in agreement with the next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics prediction. The analysis is extended with a search for the associated production of the Higgs boson and a photon, which is generated by a coupling of the Higgs boson to light quarks. The result is used to constrain the Higgs boson couplings to light quarks.

New Structures in the J/ψJ/ψ Mass Spectrum in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 132:111901. [PMID: 38563916 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.132.111901] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/12/2023] [Revised: 12/07/2023] [Accepted: 01/31/2024] [Indexed: 04/04/2024]
Abstract
A search is reported for near-threshold structures in the J/ψJ/ψ invariant mass spectrum produced in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV from data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 135 fb^{-1}. Three structures are found, and a model with quantum interference among these structures provides a good description of the data. A new structure is observed with a local significance above 5 standard deviations at a mass of 6638_{-38}^{+43}(stat)_{-31}^{+16}(syst) MeV. Another structure with even higher significance is found at a mass of 6847_{-28}^{+44}(stat)_{-20}^{+48}(syst) MeV, which is consistent with the X(6900) resonance reported by the LHCb experiment and confirmed by the ATLAS experiment. Evidence for another new structure, with a local significance of 4.7 standard deviations, is found at a mass of 7134_{-25}^{+48}(stat)_{-15}^{+41}(syst) MeV. Results are also reported for a model without interference, which does not fit the data as well and shows mass shifts up to 150 MeV relative to the model with interference.

Safety and Immunogenicity of an mRNA-Based RSV Vaccine Including a 12-Month Booster in a Phase I Clinical Trial in Healthy Older Adults. J Infect Dis 2024:jiae081. [PMID: 38385566 DOI: 10.1093/infdis/jiae081] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/05/2023] [Revised: 02/02/2024] [Accepted: 02/14/2024] [Indexed: 02/23/2024] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND An mRNA-based RSV vaccine, mRNA-1345, is under clinical investigation to address RSV disease burden in older adults. METHODS This phase 1, randomized, observer-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-ranging study evaluated safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity of mRNA-1345 in adults 65-79 years (NCT04528719). Participants were randomized to receive 1-dose of mRNA-1345 (12.5, 25, 50, 100, or 200-µg) or placebo and matched mRNA-1345 booster or placebo at 12-months. RESULTS Overall, 298 participants received the first injection; 247 received the 12-month booster injection. mRNA-1345 was generally well-tolerated after both injections, with the most frequently reported solicited adverse reactions being injection-site pain, fatigue, headache, arthralgia, and myalgia. Reactogenicity was higher after the booster injection than the first injection but similar severity, time-to-onset, and duration. A single mRNA-1345 injection boosted RSV-A and RSV-B neutralizing antibody titers (nAb) and prefusion-F-binding antibody (preF-bAb) concentrations at 1-month (geometric mean-fold rises: RSV-A, 10.2-16.5; RSV-B, 5.3-12.5; preF-bAb, 7.2-12.1). RSV antibody levels remained above baseline through 12-months, indicating immune persistence. A 12-month booster injection also increased RSV-A and RSV-B nAb titers and preF-bAb concentrations; titers post-booster injection were numerically lower compared to titers after the first-dose, with overlapping 95% CIs. CONCLUSIONS mRNA-1345 was well-tolerated and immunogenic following a single injection and a 12-month booster. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04528719.

Abstract
The first search for scalar leptoquarks produced in τ-lepton-quark collisions is presented. It is based on a set of proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1}. The reconstructed final state consists of a jet, significant missing transverse momentum, and a τ lepton reconstructed through its hadronic or leptonic decays. Limits are set on the product of the leptoquark production cross section and branching fraction and interpreted as exclusions in the plane of the leptoquark mass and the leptoquark-τ-quark coupling strength.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) presents a global health concern. A lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated mRNA-based RSV vaccine (mRNA-1345) encoding the membrane-anchored RSV prefusion stabilised F glycoprotein (preF) is under clinical investigation. METHODS This phase 1, randomized, observer-blind, placebo-controlled dose escalation study assessed safety and immunogenicity of mRNA-1345 in healthy adults aged 18-49 years (NCT04528719). Participants were randomized to receive one dose of mRNA-1345 (50, 100, or 200 µg) or placebo, or 3 doses of mRNA-1345 (100 µg) or placebo 56 days apart. RESULTS mRNA-1345 was well-tolerated at all dose levels. The most common solicited adverse reactions were pain, headache, fatigue, myalgia, or chills, which were all generally mild to moderate. A single injection of mRNA-1345 boosted RSV neutralizing antibody titers (geometric mean fold rise [GMFR]: RSV-A, 20.0 to 23.5; RSV-B, 11.7 to 16.0) and RSV preF binding antibody concentrations (GMFR: 16.1 to 21.8) at 1 month post injection, with no apparent dose response. Antibody levels remained above baseline through 6 months. Sequential doses of 100 µg were well tolerated but did not further boost antibody levels. CONCLUSIONS A single mRNA-1345 injection demonstrated an acceptable safety profile in younger adults and induced a durable neutralizing antibody response, supporting its continued development.

Abstract
A search for dark matter in events with a displaced nonresonant muon pair and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1} of proton-proton (pp) collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV produced by the LHC in 2016-2018. No significant excess over the predicted backgrounds is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the inelastic dark matter production cross section σ(pp→A^{'}→χ_{1}χ_{2}) and the decay branching fraction B(χ_{2}→χ_{1}μ^{+}μ^{-}), where A^{'} is a dark photon and χ_{1} and χ_{2} are states in the dark sector with near mass degeneracy. This is the first dedicated collider search for inelastic dark matter.

Luminosity determination using Z boson production at the CMS experiment. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2024; 84:26. [PMID: 38227803 PMCID: PMC10781851 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-023-12268-2] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/02/2023] [Accepted: 11/19/2023] [Indexed: 01/18/2024]
Abstract
The measurement of Z boson production is presented as a method to determine the integrated luminosity of CMS data sets. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te V . Events with Z bosons decaying into a pair of muons are selected. The total number of Z bosons produced in a fiducial volume is determined, together with the identification efficiencies and correlations from the same data set, in small intervals of 20pb - 1 of integrated luminosity, thus facilitating the efficiency and rate measurement as a function of time and instantaneous luminosity. Using the ratio of the efficiency-corrected numbers of Z bosons, the precisely measured integrated luminosity of one data set is used to determine the luminosity of another. For the first time, a full quantitative uncertainty analysis of the use of Z bosons for the integrated luminosity measurement is performed. The uncertainty in the extrapolation between two data sets, recorded in 2017 at low and high instantaneous luminosity, is less than 0.5%. We show that the Z boson rate measurement constitutes a precise method, complementary to traditional methods, with the potential to improve the measurement of the integrated luminosity.

Measurement of the production cross section for a W boson in association with a charm quark in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2024; 84:27. [PMID: 38227819 PMCID: PMC10781857 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-023-12258-4] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/04/2023] [Accepted: 11/15/2023] [Indexed: 01/18/2024]
Abstract
The strange quark content of the proton is probed through the measurement of the production cross section for a W boson and a charm (c) quark in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te V . The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The W bosons are identified through their leptonic decays to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Charm jets are tagged using the presence of a muon or a secondary vertex inside the jet. The W + c production cross section and the cross section ratio R c ± = σ ( W + + c ¯ ) / σ ( W - + c ) are measured inclusively and differentially as functions of the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the lepton originating from the W boson decay. The precision of the measurements is improved with respect to previous studies, reaching 1% in R c ± = 0.950 ± 0.005 (stat) ± 0.010 (syst) . The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions up to next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Correlation of the Geriatric Assessment with Overall Survival in Older Patients with Cancer. Clin Oncol (R Coll Radiol) 2024; 36:e61-e71. [PMID: 37953073 DOI: 10.1016/j.clon.2023.11.003] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/18/2023] [Revised: 10/09/2023] [Accepted: 11/02/2023] [Indexed: 11/14/2023]
Abstract
AIMS Global guidelines recommend that all older patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy should undergo a geriatric assessment. However, utilisation of the geriatric assessment is often constrained by its time-intensive nature, which limits its adoption in settings with limited resources and high demand. There is a lack of evidence correlating the results of the geriatric assessment with survival from the Indian subcontinent. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to assess the impact of the geriatric assessment on survival in older Indian patients with cancer and to identify the factors associated with survival in these older patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was an observational study, conducted in the geriatric oncology clinic of the Tata Memorial Hospital (Mumbai, India). Patients aged 60 years and older with cancer who underwent a geriatric assessment were enrolled. We assessed the non-oncological geriatric domains of function and falls, nutrition, comorbidities, cognition, psychology, social support and medications. Patients exhibiting impairment in two or more domains were classified as frail. RESULTS Between June 2018 and January 2022, we enrolled 897 patients. The median age was 69 (interquartile range 65-73) years. The common malignancies were lung (40.5%), oesophagus (31.9%) and genitourinary (12.1%); 54.6% had metastatic disease. Based on the results of the geriatric assessment, 767 (85.4%) patients were frail. The estimated median overall survival in fit patients was 24.3 (95% confidence interval 18.2-not reached) months, compared with 11.2 (10.1-12.8) months in frail patients (hazard ratio 0.54; 95% confidence interval 0.41-0.72, P < 0.001). This difference in overall survival remained significant after adjusting for age, sex, primary tumour and metastatic status (hazard ratio 0.56; 95% confidence interval 0.41-0.74, P < 0.001). In the patients with a performance status of 0 or 1 (n = 454), 365 (80.4%) were frail; the median overall survival in the performance status 0-1 group was 33.0 months (95% confidence interval 24.31-not reached) in the fit group versus 14.4 months (95% confidence interval 12.25-18.73) in the frail patients (hazard ratio 0.50; 95% confidence interval 0.34-0.74, P = 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, the geriatric assessment domains that were predictive of survival were function (hazard ratio 0.68; 95% confidence interval 0.52-0.88; P = 0.003), nutrition (hazard ratio 0.64; 95% confidence interval 0.48-0.85, P = 0.002) and cognition (hazard ratio 0.67; 95% confidence interval 0.49-0.91, P = 0.011). DISCUSSION The geriatric assessment is a powerful prognostic tool for survival among older Indian patients with cancer. The geriatric assessment is prognostic even in the cohort of patients thought to be the fittest, i.e. performance status 0 and 1. Our study re-emphasises the critical importance of the geriatric assessment in all older patients planned for cancer-directed therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can cause substantial morbidity and mortality among older adults. An mRNA-based RSV vaccine, mRNA-1345, encoding the stabilized RSV prefusion F glycoprotein, is under clinical investigation. METHODS In this ongoing, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2-3 trial, we randomly assigned, in a 1:1 ratio, adults 60 years of age or older to receive one dose of mRNA-1345 (50 μg) or placebo. The two primary efficacy end points were the prevention of RSV-associated lower respiratory tract disease with at least two signs or symptoms and with at least three signs or symptoms. A key secondary efficacy end point was the prevention of RSV-associated acute respiratory disease. Safety was also assessed. RESULTS Overall, 35,541 participants were assigned to receive the mRNA-1345 vaccine (17,793 participants) or placebo (17,748). The median follow-up was 112 days (range, 1 to 379). The primary analyses were conducted when at least 50% of the anticipated cases of RSV-associated lower respiratory tract disease had occurred. Vaccine efficacy was 83.7% (95.88% confidence interval [CI], 66.0 to 92.2) against RSV-associated lower respiratory tract disease with at least two signs or symptoms and 82.4% (96.36% CI, 34.8 to 95.3) against the disease with at least three signs or symptoms. Vaccine efficacy was 68.4% (95% CI, 50.9 to 79.7) against RSV-associated acute respiratory disease. Protection was observed against both RSV subtypes (A and B) and was generally consistent across subgroups defined according to age and coexisting conditions. Participants in the mRNA-1345 group had a higher incidence than those in the placebo group of solicited local adverse reactions (58.7% vs. 16.2%) and of systemic adverse reactions (47.7% vs. 32.9%); most reactions were mild to moderate in severity and were transient. Serious adverse events occurred in 2.8% of the participants in each trial group. CONCLUSIONS A single dose of the mRNA-1345 vaccine resulted in no evident safety concerns and led to a lower incidence of RSV-associated lower respiratory tract disease and of RSV-associated acute respiratory disease than placebo among adults 60 years of age or older. Measurement of the top quark mass using a profile likelihood approach with the lepton + jets final states in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2023; 83:963. Abstract
The mass of the top quark is measured in 36.3fb - 1 of LHC proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at s = 13 Te V . The measurement uses a sample of top quark pair candidate events containing one isolated electron or muon and at least four jets in the final state. For each event, the mass is reconstructed from a kinematic fit of the decay products to a top quark pair hypothesis. A profile likelihood method is applied using up to four observables per event to extract the top quark mass. The top quark mass is measured to be 171.77 ± 0.37 Ge V . This approach significantly improves the precision over previous measurements.

A search for decays of the Higgs boson to invisible particles in events with a top-antitop quark pair or a vector boson in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2023; 83:933. Abstract
A search for decays to invisible particles of Higgs bosons produced in association with a top-antitop quark pair or a vector boson, which both decay to a fully hadronic final state, has been performed using proton-proton collision data collected at s = 13 Te V by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 . The 95% confidence level upper limit set on the branching fraction of the 125Ge V Higgs boson to invisible particles, B ( H → inv ) , is 0.54 (0.39 expected), assuming standard model production cross sections. The results of this analysis are combined with previous B ( H → inv ) searches carried out at s = 7 , 8, and 13Te V in complementary production modes. The combined upper limit at 95% confidence level on B ( H → inv ) is 0.15 (0.08 expected).

Observation of τ Lepton Pair Production in Ultraperipheral Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:151803. [PMID: 37897747 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.131.151803] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/10/2022] [Revised: 08/31/2022] [Accepted: 10/28/2022] [Indexed: 10/30/2023]
Abstract
We present an observation of photon-photon production of τ lepton pairs in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. The measurement is based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 404 μb^{-1} collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. The γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-} process is observed for τ^{+}τ^{-} events with a muon and three charged hadrons in the final state. The measured fiducial cross section is σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-})=4.8±0.6(stat)±0.5(syst) μb, where the second (third) term corresponds to the statistical (systematic) uncertainty in σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-}) in agreement with leading-order QED predictions. Using σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-}), we estimate a model-dependent value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the τ lepton of a_{τ}=0.001_{-0.089}^{+0.055}.

Final Results from a Prospective Randomized Pilot Trial of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy vs. Radiofrequency Ablation for the Management of Small Renal Masses (RADSTER). Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2023; 117:S82. [PMID: 37784584 DOI: 10.1016/j.ijrobp.2023.06.402] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 10/04/2023]
Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) The benefits of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) as a primary treatment modality for small renal masses (SRMs) ≤4cm are unclear. Our objective was to evaluate both SBRT and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for SRMs to determine the utility of a future Phase III randomized controlled trial (RCT). MATERIALS/METHODS Patients with SRMs who declined active surveillance, surgery or were deemed inoperable were recruited at a single tertiary academic center. After meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria, participants were assigned 1:1 to SBRT or RFA, with crossover allowed if technical or patient factors precluded either treatment. SBRT included an initial simulation and a single delivered fraction of 25 Gy to the planning target volume. RFA was conducted percutaneously with 2 cycles of up to 8 minutes each upon reaching target temperature. Renal protocol imaging (CT or MRI) was completed q3 months (up to 1 year) post-procedure. Diagnostic and 1-year renal biopsies were also required. The objective of this trial was feasibility of randomization, with the aim of recruiting 24 patients based on this assumption. RESULTS From January 2020 to June 2021, 33 patients were screened, with 24 recruited and initially randomized (SBRT = 12; RFA = 12). Median age was 67 years (53-85) and 17/24 were male. Seventeen patients had clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC), 6 had papillary RCC, and 1 had chromophobe RCC. Following randomization, a total of 14 patients had SBRT, 7 had RFA, and 3 declined treatments. Crossover mainly occurred from RFA to SBRT due to technical inability to perform RFA. One grade 2 acute pain flare occurred in the SBRT group (none in the RFA group). No late toxicity up to 1 year was reported in either group. At 1 year, no radiographic local failure (RECIST) was observed, although RFA patients were more likely to have loss of arterial enhancement (83.3% vs 23%, p = 0.041). Mean reduction of estimated glomerular filtration rate was similar at 1 year (RFA -3 mL/min, SBRT -5.3 mL/min, p = 0.7). Biopsies were performed in 20/24 patients at 1 year, on per-protocol analysis 7/7 (100%) of RFA patients had no evidence of residual RCC, whereas with SBRT 4/13 (31%) patients had no evidence of residual RCC, 2/13 (15%) had scant/minimal residual disease, and 7/13 (54%) had evidence of RCC. No patients developed distant failure or death from RCC during follow-up. CONCLUSION Recruitment, randomization and follow-up of patients with SRMs was feasible in this study. More patients received SBRT compared to RFA, highlighting the need for thorough multidisciplinary evaluation prior to randomization. Both treatments have excellent safety profiles, with RFA demonstrating initial higher rates of pathological/radiologic response, however long-term follow-up is required. This trial supports the need for a large scale RCT with appropriate radiographic and pathological endpoints built in.

Evaluation of Volumetric Response Assessment from Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) for Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC). Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2023; 117:e434. [PMID: 37785415 DOI: 10.1016/j.ijrobp.2023.06.1603] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 10/04/2023]
Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) SABR has recently been proven to be a safe, effective treatment for RCC. However, long term follow-up assessment can be challenging as traditional methods of assessment such as RECIST may not identify tumor response, and delayed responses to SABR are common. The purpose of this study was to quantify SABR response using volumetric changes from baseline throughout follow-up. MATERIALS/METHODS We conducted a single-center retrospective study including all patients treated with SABR for RCC from 2013 to 2020. Patients were included if they had no metastatic disease, no resection after SABR, and had follow-up imaging available for at least 12 months following SABR. All available follow-up CT scans were collected and aligned, and tumors were contoured on all follow-up scans to measure volume and maximum linear dimension. Response to SABR was assessed by comparing tumor volume at follow-up to the initial tumor volume at the time of CT simulation. RESULTS Twenty-four patients with 25 tumors were included. The dose was between 25Gy and 42Gy in 1-5 fractions; 64% of tumors received 35Gy in 5 fractions. Follow-up time was between 16 and 67 months; median follow-up was 32 months. A total of 164 follow-up scans were contoured. The relative volume and standard deviation (compared to baseline) at 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, and 48 months was 0.76 (SD 0.22), 0.80 (SD 0.27), 0.76 (SD 0.32), 0.75 (SD 0.26), 0.61 (SD 0.33), 0.53 (SD 0.41), and 0.34 (SD 0.22) respectively. One tumor (4%) showed continued growth after SABR, while 24 of 25 tumors (96%) had durable volumetric response after SABR. Eighteen of 25 tumors (72%) decreased in volume on first follow-up scan and continued to shrink, while 6 of 25 tumors (24%) displayed growth after SABR (average 33% increase in volume) before shrinking below their initial volume. The median time to any volumetric response was 3.5 months (range 2-19 months). Nineteen tumors (76%) had 30% volumetric response. Median time to 30% volumetric response was 7 months (range 3-55 months). In contrast, 12 tumors (48%) had 30% decrease in maximum linear size, with median time to 30% linear response of 16 months (range 4-42 months). Thirteen tumors (52%) had 50% volumetric response; median time to 50% volumetric response was 11 months (range 4-37 months). Among tumors for which contrast-enhanced scans were available, 15 of 22 tumors (68%) displayed arterial enhancement at their most recent follow-up scan, at a median time of 24 months after SABR. CONCLUSION SABR is a highly effective treatment for RCC, achieving durable local control in 96% of cases. Initial growth after SABR is common before volumetric response occurs. Volumetric response is more frequent and occurs earlier than decrease in maximum linear dimension, even with persistent arterial contrast enhancement following SABR.

Measurement of the Dependence of the Hadron Production Fraction Ratios f_{s}/f_{u} and f_{d}/f_{u} on B Meson Kinematic Variables in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:121901. [PMID: 37802954 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.131.121901] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/05/2022] [Revised: 03/27/2023] [Accepted: 06/20/2023] [Indexed: 10/08/2023]
Abstract
The dependence of the ratio between the B_{s}^{0} and B^{+} hadron production fractions, f_{s}/f_{u}, on the transverse momentum (p_{T}) and rapidity of the B mesons is studied using the decay channels B_{s}^{0}→J/ψϕ and B^{+}→J/ψK^{+}. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 61.6 fb^{-1}. The f_{s}/f_{u} ratio is observed to depend on the B p_{T} and to be consistent with becoming asymptotically constant at large p_{T}. No rapidity dependence is observed. The ratio of the B^{0} to B^{+} meson production fractions, f_{d}/f_{u}, is also measured, for the first time in proton-proton collisions, using the B^{0}→J/ψK^{*0} decay channel. The result is found to be within 1 standard deviation of unity and independent of p_{T} and rapidity, as expected from isospin invariance.

Abstract
We present the first direct search for exotic Higgs boson decays H→AA, A→γγ in events with two photonlike objects. The hypothetical particle A is a low-mass spin-0 particle decaying promptly to a merged diphoton reconstructed as a single photonlike object. We analyze the data collected by the CMS experiment at sqrt[s]=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 fb^{-1}. No excess above the estimated background is found. We set upper limits on the branching fraction B(H→AA→4γ) of (0.9-3.3)×10^{-3} at 95% confidence level for masses of A in the range 0.1-1.2 GeV.

Abstract
The first observation of the production of W^{±}W^{±} bosons from double parton scattering processes using same-sign electron-muon and dimuon events in proton-proton collisions is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1} recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Multivariate discriminants are used to distinguish the signal process from the main backgrounds. A binned maximum likelihood fit is performed to extract the signal cross section. The measured cross section for production of same-sign W bosons decaying leptonically is 80.7±11.2(stat) _{-8.6}^{+9.5}(syst)±12.1(model) fb, whereas the measured fiducial cross section is 6.28±0.81(stat)±0.69(syst)±0.37(model) fb. The observed significance of the signal is 6.2 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis.

Study Protocol of the Bladder Adjuvant RadioTherapy (BART) Trial: A Randomised Phase III Trial of Adjuvant Radiotherapy Following Cystectomy in Bladder Cancer. Clin Oncol (R Coll Radiol) 2023; 35:e506-e515. [PMID: 37208232 DOI: 10.1016/j.clon.2023.04.010] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/13/2023] [Revised: 04/10/2023] [Accepted: 04/28/2023] [Indexed: 05/21/2023]
Abstract
AIMS To assess the efficacy and safety of adjuvant radiotherapy in patients with high-risk muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) following radical cystectomy (RC) and chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS The BART (Bladder Adjuvant RadioTherapy) trial is an ongoing multicentric, randomised, phase III trial comparing the efficacy and safety of adjuvant radiotherapy versus observation in patients with high-risk MIBC. The key eligibility criteria include ≥pT3, node-positive (pN+), positive margins and/or nodal yield <10, or, neoadjuvant chemotherapy for cT3/T4/N+ disease. In total, 153 patients will be accrued and randomised, in a 1:1 ratio, to either observation (standard arm) or adjuvant radiotherapy (test arm) following surgery and chemotherapy. Stratification parameters include nodal status (N+ versus N0) and chemotherapy (neoadjuvant chemotherapy versus adjuvant chemotherapy versus no chemotherapy). For patients in the test arm, adjuvant radiotherapy to cystectomy bed and pelvic nodes is planned with intensity-modulated radiotherapy to a dose of 50.4 Gy in 28 fractions using daily image guidance. All patients will follow-up with 3-monthly clinical review and urine cytology for 2 years and subsequently 6 monthly until 5 years, with contrast-enhanced computed tomography abdomen pelvis 6 monthly for 2 years and annually until 5 years. Physician-scored toxicity using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 5.0 and patient-reported quality of life using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - Colorectal questionnaire is recorded pre-treatment and at follow-up. ENDPOINTS AND STATISTICS The primary endpoint is 2-year locoregional recurrence-free survival. The sample size calculation was based on the estimated improvement in 2-year locoregional recurrence-free survival from 70% in the standard arm to 85% in the test arm (hazard ratio 0.45) using 80% statistical power and a two-sided alpha error of 0.05. Secondary endpoints include disease-free survival, overall survival, acute and late toxicity, patterns of failure and quality of life. CONCLUSION The BART trial aims to evaluate whether contemporary radiotherapy after standard-of-care surgery and chemotherapy reduces pelvic recurrences safely and also potentially affects survival in high-risk MIBC.

Observation of the Rare Decay of the η Meson to Four Muons. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:091903. Abstract
A search for the rare η→μ^{+}μ^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-} double-Dalitz decay is performed using a sample of proton-proton collisions, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with high-rate muon triggers during 2017 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb^{-1}. A signal having a statistical significance well in excess of 5 standard deviations is observed. Using the η→μ^{+}μ^{-} decay as normalization, the branching fraction B(η→μ^{+}μ^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-})=[5.0±0.8(stat)±0.7(syst)±0.7(B_{2μ})]×10^{-9} is measured, where the last term is the uncertainty in the normalization channel branching fraction. This work achieves an improved precision of over 5 orders of magnitude compared to previous results, leading to the first measurement of this branching fraction, which is found to agree with theoretical predictions.

Measurements of jet multiplicity and jet transverse momentum in multijet events in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2023; 83:742. Abstract
Multijet events at large transverse momentum (p T ) are measured at s = 13 Te V using data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb - 1 . The multiplicity of jets with p T > 50 Ge V that are produced in association with a high-p T dijet system is measured in various ranges of the p T of the jet with the highest transverse momentum and as a function of the azimuthal angle difference Δ ϕ 1 , 2 between the two highest p T jets in the dijet system. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momenta of the four highest p T jets. The measurements are compared with leading and next-to-leading order matrix element calculations supplemented with simulations of parton shower, hadronization, and multiparton interactions. In addition, the measurements are compared with next-to-leading order matrix element calculations combined with transverse-momentum dependent parton densities and transverse-momentum dependent parton shower.

Azimuthal correlations in Z +jets events in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2023; 83:722. Abstract
The production of Z bosons associated with jets is measured in pp collisions at s = 13 Te V with data recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3fb - 1 . The multiplicity of jets with transverse momentum p T > 30 Ge V is measured for different regions of the Z boson's p T ( Z ) , from lower than 10Ge V to higher than 100Ge V . The azimuthal correlation Δ ϕ between the Z boson and the leading jet, as well as the correlations between the two leading jets are measured in three regions of p T ( Z ) . The measurements are compared with several predictions at leading and next-to-leading orders, interfaced with parton showers. Predictions based on transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions and corresponding parton showers give a good description of the measurement in the regions where multiple parton interactions and higher jet multiplicities are not important. The effects of multiple parton interactions are shown to be important to correctly describe the measured spectra in the low p T ( Z ) regions.

Search for Higgs Boson Decay to a Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:061801. Abstract
A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark-antiquark pair, H→cc[over ¯], produced in association with a leptonically decaying V (W or Z) boson is presented. The search is performed with proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1}. Novel charm jet identification and analysis methods using machine learning techniques are employed. The analysis is validated by searching for Z→cc[over ¯] in VZ events, leading to its first observation at a hadron collider with a significance of 5.7 standard deviations. The observed (expected) upper limit on σ(VH)B(H→cc[over ¯]) is 0.94 (0.50_{-0.15}^{+0.22})pb at 95% confidence level (C.L.), corresponding to 14 (7.6_{-2.3}^{+3.4}) times the standard model prediction. For the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling modifier, κ_{c}, the observed (expected) 95% C.L. interval is 1.1<|κ_{c}|<5.5 (|κ_{c}|<3.4), the most stringent constraint to date.

Azimuthal Correlations within Exclusive Dijets with Large Momentum Transfer in Photon-Lead Collisions. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:051901. [PMID: 37595238 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.131.051901] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/29/2022] [Revised: 11/11/2022] [Accepted: 02/15/2023] [Indexed: 08/20/2023]
Abstract
The structure of nucleons is multidimensional and depends on the transverse momenta, spatial geometry, and polarization of the constituent partons. Such a structure can be studied using high-energy photons produced in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions. The first measurement of the azimuthal angular correlations of exclusively produced events with two jets in photon-lead interactions at large momentum transfer is presented, a process that is considered to be sensitive to the underlying nuclear gluon polarization. This study uses a data sample of ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.38 nb^{-1}, collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measured second harmonic of the correlation between the sum and difference of the two jet transverse momentum vectors is found to be positive, and rising, as the dijet transverse momentum increases. A well-tuned model that has been successful at describing a wide range of proton scattering data from the HERA experiments fails to describe the observed correlations, suggesting the presence of gluon polarization effects.

Abstract
The current opioid overdose crisis is characterized by the presence of unknown psychoactive adulterants. Xylazine is an alpha-2 receptor agonist that is not approved for human use but is commonly used in veterinary medicine due to its sedative and muscle-relaxant properties. Cases of human intoxication due to accidental or voluntary use have been reported since the 1980s. However, reports of adulteration of illicit opioids (heroin and illicit fentanyl) with xylazine have been increasing all over Western countries. In humans, xylazine causes respiratory depression, bradycardia, and hypotension-posing individuals, using xylazine-adulterated opioids. We present a narrative review of the latest intoxication cases related to xylazine, to bring awareness to readers and also to help pathologists to detect and deal with xylazine cases.

Search for Nonresonant Pair Production of Highly Energetic Higgs Bosons Decaying to Bottom Quarks. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:041803. [PMID: 37566864 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.131.041803] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/13/2022] [Accepted: 06/27/2022] [Indexed: 08/13/2023]
Abstract
A search for nonresonant Higgs boson (H) pair production via gluon and vector boson (V) fusion is performed in the four-bottom-quark final state, using proton-proton collision data at 13 TeV corresponding to 138 fb^{-1} collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analysis targets Lorentz-boosted H pairs identified using a graph neural network. It constrains the strengths relative to the standard model of the H self-coupling and the quartic VVHH couplings, κ_{2V}, excluding κ_{2V}=0 for the first time, with a significance of 6.3 standard deviations when other H couplings are fixed to their standard model values.

Search for Higgs Boson and Observation of Z Boson through Their Decay into a Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair in Boosted Topologies in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:041801. Abstract
A search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson (H) produced with transverse momentum (p_{T}) greater than 450 GeV and decaying to a charm quark-antiquark (cc[over ¯]) pair is presented. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at sqrt[s]=13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1}. Boosted H→cc[over ¯] decay products are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet and identified using a deep neural network charm tagging technique. The method is validated by measuring the Z→cc[over ¯] decay process, which is observed in association with jets at high p_{T} for the first time with a signal strength of 1.00_{-0.14}^{+0.17}(syst)±0.08(theo)±0.06(stat), defined as the ratio of the observed process rate to the SM expectation. The observed (expected) upper limit on σ(H)B(H→cc[over ¯]) is set at 47 (39) times the SM prediction at 95% confidence level.

Measurements of the Higgs boson production cross section and couplings in the W boson pair decay channel in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2023; 83:667. [PMID: 37522748 PMCID: PMC10371976 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-023-11632-6] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/19/2022] [Accepted: 10/09/2022] [Indexed: 08/01/2023]
Abstract
Production cross sections of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W bosons are measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te V . The analysis targets Higgs bosons produced via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and in association with a W or Z boson. Candidate events are required to have at least two charged leptons and moderate missing transverse momentum, targeting events with at least one leptonically decaying W boson originating from the Higgs boson. Results are presented in the form of inclusive and differential cross sections in the simplified template cross section framework, as well as couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions. The data set collected by the CMS detector during 2016-2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 . The signal strength modifier μ , defined as the ratio of the observed production rate in a given decay channel to the standard model expectation, is measured to be μ = 0 . 95 - 0.09 + 0.10 . All results are found to be compatible with the standard model within the uncertainties.

Measurement of the mass dependence of the transverse momentum of lepton pairs in Drell-Yan production in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2023; 83:628. [PMID: 37471210 PMCID: PMC10352449 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-023-11631-7] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/10/2022] [Accepted: 09/29/2022] [Indexed: 07/22/2023]
Abstract
The double differential cross sections of the Drell-Yan lepton pair (ℓ + ℓ - , dielectron or dimuon) production are measured as functions of the invariant mass m ℓ ℓ , transverse momentum p T ( ℓ ℓ ) , and φ η ∗ . The φ η ∗ observable, derived from angular measurements of the leptons and highly correlated with p T ( ℓ ℓ ) , is used to probe the low-p T ( ℓ ℓ ) region in a complementary way. Dilepton masses up to 1Te V are investigated. Additionally, a measurement is performed requiring at least one jet in the final state. To benefit from partial cancellation of the systematic uncertainty, the ratios of the differential cross sections for various m ℓ ℓ ranges to those in the Z mass peak interval are presented. The collected data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.3fb - 1 of proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13Te V . Measurements are compared with predictions based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics, including soft-gluon resummation.

CMS pythia 8 colour reconnection tunes based on underlying-event data. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2023; 83:587. [PMID: 37440247 PMCID: PMC10333420 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-023-11630-8] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/05/2022] [Accepted: 05/16/2023] [Indexed: 07/14/2023]
Abstract
New sets of parameter tunes for two of the colour reconnection models, quantum chromodynamics-inspired and gluon-move, implemented in the pythia 8 event generator, are obtained based on the default CMS pythia 8 underlying-event tune, CP5. Measurements sensitive to the underlying event performed by the CMS experiment at centre-of-mass energies s = 7 and 13Te V , and by the CDF experiment at 1.96Te V are used to constrain the parameters of colour reconnection models and multiple-parton interactions simultaneously. The new colour reconnection tunes are compared with various measurements at 1.96, 7, 8, and 13Te V including measurements of the underlying-event, strange-particle multiplicities, jet substructure observables, jet shapes, and colour flow in top quark pair (t t ¯ ) events. The new tunes are also used to estimate the uncertainty related to colour reconnection modelling in the top quark mass measurement using the decay products of t t ¯ events in the semileptonic channel at 13Te V .

Probing Heavy Majorana Neutrinos and the Weinberg Operator through Vector Boson Fusion Processes in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:011803. [PMID: 37478454 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.131.011803] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/17/2022] [Accepted: 08/31/2022] [Indexed: 07/23/2023]
Abstract
The first search exploiting the vector boson fusion process to probe heavy Majorana neutrinos and the Weinberg operator at the LHC is presented. The search is performed in the same-sign dimuon final state using a proton-proton collision dataset recorded at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1}. The results are found to agree with the predictions of the standard model. For heavy Majorana neutrinos, constraints on the squared mixing element between the muon and the heavy neutrino are derived in the heavy neutrino mass range 50 GeV-25 TeV; for masses above 650 GeV these are the most stringent constraints from searches at the LHC to date. A first test of the Weinberg operator at colliders provides an observed upper limit at 95% confidence level on the effective μμ Majorana neutrino mass of 10.8 GeV.

Search for light Higgs bosons from supersymmetric cascade decays in pp collisions at s=13TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2023; 83:571. [PMID: 37432681 PMCID: PMC10326141 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-023-11581-0] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/28/2022] [Accepted: 07/01/2022] [Indexed: 07/12/2023]
Abstract
A search is reported for pairs of light Higgs bosons (H 1 ) produced in supersymmetric cascade decays in final states with small missing transverse momentum. A data set of LHC pp collisions collected with the CMS detector at s = 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 is used. The search targets events where both H 1 bosons decay into pairs that are reconstructed as large-radius jets using substructure techniques. No evidence is found for an excess of events beyond the background expectations of the standard model (SM). Results from the search are interpreted in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM, where a "singlino" of small mass leads to squark and gluino cascade decays that can predominantly end in a highly Lorentz-boosted singlet-like H 1 and a singlino-like neutralino of small transverse momentum. Upper limits are set on the product of the squark or gluino pair production cross section and the square of the branching fraction of the H 1 in a benchmark model containing almost mass-degenerate gluinos and light-flavour squarks. Under the assumption of an SM-like branching fraction, H 1 bosons with masses in the range 40-120GeV arising from the decays of squarks or gluinos with a mass of 1200-2500GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Measurement of the differential tt¯ production cross section as a function of the jet mass and extraction of the top quark mass in hadronic decays of boosted top quarks. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2023; 83:560. [PMID: 37432714 PMCID: PMC10317917 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-023-11587-8] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/02/2022] [Accepted: 05/04/2023] [Indexed: 07/12/2023]
Abstract
A measurement of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of Lorentz-boosted top quarks is presented. The measurement is performed in the lepton + jets channel of top quark pair production (t t ¯ ) events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay are reconstructed using a single large-radius jet with transverse momentum greater than 400Ge V . The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 . The differential t t ¯ production cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded to the particle level and is used to extract the top quark mass. The jet mass scale is calibrated using the hadronic W boson decay within the large-radius jet. The uncertainties in the modelling of the final state radiation are reduced by studying angular correlations in the jet substructure. These developments lead to a significant increase in precision, and a top quark mass of 173.06 ± 0.84 Ge V .

Hybrid descriptors-conjoint indices: a case study on imidazole-thiourea containing glutaminyl cyclase inhibitors for design of novel anti-Alzheimer's candidates. SAR AND QSAR IN ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2023; 34:361-381. Abstract
Clinical studies show that the pyroglutamate alteration of amyloid-β (Aβ) catalysed by metalloenzyme glutaminyl cyclase results in the formation of the more neurotoxic pGlu-Aβ, and inhibition of glutaminyl cyclase can bring down the load of pGlu-Aβ in the brain and reduces Alzheimer's disease pathology with improvement in cognition. The present study involves the identification of activity-modulating structural features of 188 inhibitors of glutaminyl cyclase under the influence of index of ideality of correlation (IIC) and correlation intensity index (CII) as prediction parameters. The QSAR models developed employing IIC and CII were found to be statistically better and had better predictability than the models developed without them. The best model (split 4) showed r2 values of 0.8155 and 0.8218 for calibration and validation sets, respectively. The structural features classified from QSAR models were used to design some new glutaminyl cyclase inhibitors. Among the designed ligands, ligand 5 possesses the highest pIC50 value (6.30) as well as binding affinity (-6.2 kcal/mol) and creates hydrogen bonds with TRP 329, π-alkyl interactions with ILE 303 and TYR 299, π-π stacking interaction with PHE 325 and interactions with ZN 391. All novel designed ligands have better pIC50 values and binding affinities.

Abstract
The Health and environmental hazards of benzene and nitrobenzene (NB) derivatives have remained a topic of interest of researchers. In silico methods for prediction of toxicity of chemicals have proved their worth in accurate forecast of environmental as well as health toxicity and are strongly recommended by regulatory authorities. Two quantitative structure-toxicity relationship (QSTR) models explaining Scenedesmus obliquus toxicity trends among 39 benzene derivatives and Tetrahymena pyriformis toxicity of 103 NB and 392 benzene derivatives are developed using semiempirical quantum chemical parameters. The best constructed QSTR models have good fitting ability (R2 = 0.8053, 0.7591, and 0.8283) and robustness (Q2LOO = 0.7507, 0.7227, and 0.8194; Q2LMO = 0.7338, 0.7153, and 0.8172). The external predictivity of all the models are quite good (R2EXT = 0.8256, 0.9349, and 0.8698). Electronegativity, Cosmo volume, total energy, and molecular weight are responsible for the increase and decrease of toxicity of benzene derivatives against S. obliquus while electronegativity, electrophilicity index, the heat of formation, total energy, hydrophobicity, and cosmo volume are responsible for modulation of toxicity of NB and benzene derivatives toward T. pyriformis. These models fulfill the requirements of all the five OECD principles.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Dithranol, a standard drug for psoriasis, has lured keen attention by virtue of its antioxidant, anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory activities. However, its poor stability and solubility critically impair the formulation design, evaluation and administration. To improve these issues, dithranol was encased in β-cyclodextrin nanosponges using solvent evaporation technique. Previously, nanosponges containing dithranol were developed in our laboratory using melt technique. Herein, a comparison of nanosponges prepared by both techniques was also included.
Results
Different nanosponge batches were engineered using diphenyl carbonate as cross-linker with β-cyclodextrin as polymer employing solvent evaporation technique. Dithranol was loaded in nanosponges via lyophilization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning colorimeter and powdered X-ray diffraction studies confirmed successful encapsulation and complexation of this drug in β-cyclodextrin nanosponges. The effect of a variable amount of cross-linker on the solubility, encapsulation efficiency, zeta potential, particle size and polydispersity index was evaluated in fabricated nanocarriers. Further, β-cyclodextrin nanosponge batches were subjected to solubility studies, photostability examination and antioxidant activity analysis and compared with previously prepared dithranol-loaded nanosponges. From the present studies results, it was concluded that dithranol-loaded nanosponges using solvent evaporation technique not only improved solubility and photostability but also preserved the antioxidant efficacy of the chosen drug.
Conclusion
The overall results emphasized moral guidance concerning encapsulation, evaluation and characterization and accredited dithranol solubilization, photostability and antioxidant potential. However, solvent evaporation and melt method are easy and promising methods to fabricate nanosponges for dithranol. This comparative study demonstrated the parameters which were affected by chosen techniques. Further, from the results of present studies, it was concluded that the formulation scientists should select the preparation technique based on the objective of their research work and requirement of desired features.

Strategies for safe management of hospital wastewater during the COVID-19 pandemic. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY : IJEST 2023; 20:1-16. [PMID: 36817164 PMCID: PMC9925218 DOI: 10.1007/s13762-023-04803-1] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/08/2022] [Revised: 09/18/2022] [Accepted: 01/27/2023] [Indexed: 06/18/2023]
Abstract
Management of hospital wastewater is a challenging task, particularly during the situations like coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The hospital effluent streams are likely to contain many known and unknown contaminants including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) along with a variety of pollutants arising from pharmaceuticals, life-style chemicals, drugs, radioactive species, and human excreta from the patients. The effluents are a mixed bag of contaminants with some of them capable of infecting through contact. Hence, it is essential to identify appropriate treatment strategies for hospital waste streams. In this work, various pollutants emerging in the context of COVID-19 are examined. A methodical review is conducted on the occurrence and disinfection methods of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. An emphasis is given to the necessity of addressing the challenges of handling hospital effluents dynamically involved during the pandemic scenario to ensure human and environmental safety. A comparative evaluation of disinfection strategies makes it evident that the non-contact methods like ultraviolet irradiation, hydrogen peroxide vapor, and preventive approaches such as the usage of antimicrobial surface coating offer promise in reducing the chance of disease transmission. These methods are also highly efficient in comparison with other strategies. Chemical disinfection strategies such as chlorination may lead to further disinfection byproducts, complicating the treatment processes. An overall analysis of various disinfection methods is presented here, including developing methods such as membrane technologies, highlighting the merits and demerits of each of these processes. Finally, the wastewater surveillance adopted during the COVID-19 outbreak is discussed. Abstract
Background Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a public health burden; no vaccine is currently available. An mRNA-based RSV vaccine (mRNA-1345) encoding the RSV prefusion stabilized F (preF) glycoprotein is under clinical investigation. Methods A phase 1, randomized, observer-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-ranging study assessed safety and immunogenicity of mRNA-1345 in younger adults (YA; 18-49 years) and older adults (OA; 65-79 years) (NCT04528719). YA and OA were randomized to receive 1 dose of mRNA-1345 (50, 100, or 200 µg) or placebo. Results In all, 74 YA participants (mRNA-1345, n=19-20; placebo, n=15) and 202 OA participants (mRNA-1345, n=47-48; placebo, n=59) received study injections. mRNA-1345 was well-tolerated in both groups, with lower reactogenicity observed in OA vs YA at higher doses. Injection site pain was the most frequent local solicited adverse reaction (SAR, YA: mRNA-1345, 73.7-100%; placebo, 0%; OA: mRNA-1345, 61.7-78.7%; placebo, 12.7% [Fig 1]). Erythema and swelling were less frequent (mRNA-1345: YA, 5.3-15.0%; OA, 0-4.3%; and YA, 5.0-15.0%; OA, 2.1-4.3%; respectively vs placebo 0% for all). Overall, 57.9-100% (YA) and 53.2-78.7% (OA) of mRNA-1345 and 40.0% (YA) and 45.5% (OA) of placebo groups reported ≥ 1 systemic SAR, most commonly headache, fatigue, myalgia, and arthralgia. As expected, neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) were present at baseline (BL; Fig 2); mRNA-1345 significantly boosted antibody titers through month (M) 1 in YA and OA, with comparable immunogenicity observed across age groups. M1 geometric mean fold rise (GMFR) for RSV-A nAbs were 20.0-22.3 (YA) and 12.1-16.6 (OA) and for RSV-B, nAbs were 11.7-14.4 (YA) and 8.7-12.6 (OA). M1 PreF binding antibody (bAb) GMFRs were 16.1-21.7 (YA) and 8.4-12.1 (OA; Fig 3). Peak antibody titers declined through M6, but levels remained ≥ 4.1-fold above BL with minimal dose response. M6 GMFR for RSV-A nAbs were 7.0-9.6 (YA) and 4.1-5.8 (OA) and for RSV-B, nAbs were 5.0-8.9 (YA) and 4.5-5.5 (OA). M6 PreF bAbs GMFR were 5.9-7.0 (YA) and 4.1-4.7 (OA). Antibody decline over time was comparable in YA and OA cohorts.
![]() ![]() ![]() Conclusion mRNA-1345 is well-tolerated in YA and OA. Antibody levels were boosted substantially above BL through M6 in both cohorts. Abstract
Measurements of the associated production of a W boson and a charm ( c ) quark in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV are reported. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb - 1 collected by the CMS detector at the LHC. The W bosons are identified through their leptonic decays to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Charm quark jets are selected using distinctive signatures of charm hadron decays. The product of the cross section and branching fraction σ ( pp → W + c + X ) B ( W → ℓ ν ) , where ℓ = e or μ , and the cross section ratio σ ( pp → W + + c ¯ + X ) / σ ( pp → W - + c + X ) are measured in a fiducial volume and differentially as functions of the pseudorapidity and of the transverse momentum of the lepton from the W boson decay. The results are compared with theoretical predictions. The impact of these measurements on the determination of the strange quark distribution is assessed.

Formulation, Characterization, Anti-Inflammatory and Cytotoxicity Study of Sesamol-Laden Nanosponges. NANOMATERIALS (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2022; 12:4211. [PMID: 36500833 PMCID: PMC9740471 DOI: 10.3390/nano12234211] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/17/2022] [Revised: 11/23/2022] [Accepted: 11/24/2022] [Indexed: 06/17/2023]
Abstract
Sesamol (SES) possesses remarkable chemotherapeutic activity, owing to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential. However, the activity of SES is mainly hampered by its poor physicochemical properties and stability issues. Hence, to improve the efficacy of this natural anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic agent, it was loaded into β-cyclodextrin nanosponges (NS) prepared using different molar ratios of polymer and crosslinker (diphenyl carbonate). The particle size of SES-laden NS (SES-NS) was shown to be in the nano range (200 to 500 nm), with a low polydispersity index, an adequate charge (-17 to -26 mV), and a high payload. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the bioactive-loaded selected batch (SES-NS6). This batch of nanoformulations showed improved solubilization efficacy (701.88 µg/mL) in comparison to bare SES (244.36 µg/mL), polymer (β-CD) (261.43 µg/mL), and other fabricated batches. The drug release data displayed the controlled release behavior of SES from NS. The findings of the egg albumin denaturation assay revealed the enhanced anti-inflammatory potential of SES-NS as compared to bare SES. Further, the cytotoxicity assay showed that SES-NS was more effective against B16F12 melanoma cell lines than the bioactive alone. The findings of this assay demonstrated a reduction in the IC50 values of SES-NS (67.38 μg/mL) in comparison to SES (106 μg/mL). The present investigation demonstrated the in vitro controlled release pattern and the enhanced anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic activity of SES-NS, suggesting its potential as a promising drug delivery carrier for topical delivery.

Search for Higgs Boson Pair Production in the Four b Quark Final State in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 129:081802. Abstract
A search for pairs of Higgs bosons produced via gluon and vector boson fusion is presented, focusing on the four b quark final state. The data sample consists of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1}. No deviation from the background-only hypothesis is observed. A 95% confidence level upper limit on the Higgs boson pair production cross section is observed at 3.9 times the standard model prediction for an expected value of 7.8. Constraints are also set on the modifiers of the Higgs field self-coupling, κ_{λ}, and of the coupling of two Higgs bosons to two vector bosons, κ_{2 V}. The observed (expected) allowed intervals at the 95% confidence level are -2.3<κ_{λ}<9.4 (-5.0<κ_{λ}<12.0) and -0.1<κ_{2 V}<2.2 (-0.4<κ_{2 V}<2.5). These are the most stringent observed constraints to date on the HH production cross section and on the κ_{2 V } coupling.

Abstract
Monoamine oxidase enzyme is necessary for the management of brain functions. It oxidatively metabolizes monoamines and produces ammonia, aldehyde and hydrogen peroxide as by-products. Excessive production of by-products of monoamine metabolism generates free radicals which cause cellular apoptosis and several neurodegenerative disorders for example Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression and autism. The inhibition of MAOs is an attractive target for the treatment of neurological disorders. Clinically approved MAO inhibitors for example selegiline, rasagiline, clorgyline, pargyline etc. are irreversible in nature and cause some adverse effects while recently studied reversible MAO inhibitors are devoid of harmful effects of old monoamine oxidase inhibitors. In this review article we have listed various synthesized molecules containing different moieties like coumarin, chalcone, thiazole, thiourea, caffeine, pyrazole, chromone etc. along with their activity, mode of action, structure activity relationship and molecular docking studies.

Search for Flavor-Changing Neutral Current Interactions of the Top Quark and Higgs Boson in Final States with Two Photons in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. Abstract
Proton-proton interactions resulting in final states with two photons are studied in a search for the signature of flavor-changing neutral current interactions of top quarks (t) and Higgs bosons (H). The analysis is based on data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb^{-1}. No significant excess above the background prediction is observed. Upper limits on the branching fractions (B) of the top quark decaying to a Higgs boson and an up (u) or charm (c) quark are derived through a binned fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum. The observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limits are found to be 0.019% (0.031%) for B(t→Hu) and 0.073% (0.051%) for B(t→Hc). These are the strictest upper limits yet determined.

Search for Resonances Decaying to Three W Bosons in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 129:021802. Abstract
A search for resonances decaying into a W boson and a radion, where the radion decays into two W bosons, is presented. The data analyzed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1} recorded in proton-proton collisions with the CMS detector at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. One isolated charged lepton is required, together with missing transverse momentum and one or two massive large-radius jets, containing the decay products of either two or one W bosons, respectively. No excess over the background estimation is observed. The results are combined with those from a complementary channel with an all-hadronic final state, described in an accompanying paper. Limits are set on parameters of an extended warped extra-dimensional model. These searches are the first of their kind at the LHC.
