Abstract
The data presented in this article were collected in the field at an experimental station in southern France under a Mediterranean climate. Experiments were conducted under three plastic walk-in tunnels used as blocks with organic farming practices over two successive years in a completely randomized design. The aim was to compare the intercropping of sweet pepper with basil, onion, lettuce, parsley or French bean to a sole crop of sweet pepper used as a control. The dataset provides information on cultural practices with details on inputs and working times used to estimate economic costs. The data also describe the climatic conditions under tunnels as well as the dynamics of soil nitrate concentration and water tension over time through treatments. Yields, economic benefits and the rates of products with visual defects are presented. In addition, some variables applied exclusively to sweet pepper crops, namely nitrate concentration in petiole sap, growth parameters, abundance of aerial pests and beneficials, incidence of root necrosis, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi colonization rates and diversity in roots. The field dataset is made publicly available to allow free and easy access for the scientific and professional community to enable analysis and reuse. Abstract
Ultrahigh-frequency acoustic-phonon resonators usually require atomically flat interfaces to avoid phonon scattering and dephasing, leading to expensive fabrication processes, such as molecular beam epitaxy. Mesoporous thin films are based on inexpensive wet chemical fabrication techniques that lead to relatively flat interfaces regardless the presence of nanopores. Here, we report mesoporous titanium dioxide-based acoustic resonators with resonances up to 90 GHz, and quality factors from 3 to 7. Numerical simulations show a good agreement with the picosecond ultrasonics experiments. We also numerically study the effect of changes in the speed of sound on the performance of the resonator. This change could be induced by liquid infiltration into the mesopores. Our findings constitute the first step towards the engineering of building blocks based on mesoporous thin films for reconfigurable optoacoustic sensors.

Abstract
Time resolved pump and probe acoustics and first-principles calculations were employed to assess elastic properties of the TbMnO3perovskite manganite having orthorhombic symmetry. Measuring sound velocities of bulk longitudinal and shear acoustic waves propagating along at least two different directions in the high symmetry planes (100), (010) and (001), provided a powerful mean to selectively determine the six diagonal elastic constantsC11= 227 GPa,C22= 349 GPa,C33= 274 GPa,C44= 71 GPa,C55= 57 GPa,C66= 62 GPa. Among the three remaining off-diagonal ones,C23= 103 GPa was determined with a bissectrice direction. Density functional theory calculations with colinear spin-polarized provided complementary insights on their optical, elastic and magnetoelastic properties.

Abstract
SummaryThe aim of this study was to investigate the effect of factor Xa inhibitors on the prothrombinase activity of platelet-derived microparticles in vitro and in vivo. The factor Xa inhibitors studied were DX9065A (a direct factor Xa inhibitor) and Sanorg34006 (an antithrombin (AT)-mediated factor Xa inhibitor). Microparticles formed from the platelet surface following activation were isolated by size exclusion gel chromatography. After purification, their presence was detected by their procoagulant activity and by flow cytometry. Our results show that factor Xa and/or factor Va were present at the surface of the platelet-derived microparticles. Prothrombinase formed on the microparticles was inhibited by factor Xa inhibitors at IC50 values of 0.45 ± 0.05 and 0.045 ± 0.005 µM for DX9065A and AT-Sanorg34006 respectively. In an experiment aimed at determining the kinetics of microparticles formation we demonstrated that thrombin traces were sufficient to induce the formation of a significant quantity of microparticles. Both factor Xa inhibitors delayed the formation of microparticles by delaying thrombin generation. The thrombogenic effect of the microparticles were studied in vivo in a modified arterio-venous shunt model in the rat. In this model, the increase in the thrombus weigh due to microparticles or phospholipids did not differ significantly (33% and 23% respectively). In these conditions, prothrombinase activity seemed to play a lesser role in the thrombogenic effect than phospholipids. Nevertheless, factor Xa inhibitors were efficient and inhibited thrombus formation in a dose-dependent manner.These results demonstrate that platelet-derived microparticles display a potent prothrombotic effect in vivo and show that factor Xa inhibitors are potent antithrombotic compounds when thrombosis was induced by microparticles.

Abstract
Quality and safety management have been implemented for many years in healthcare structures (hospitals treating cancer, private radiotherapy centres). Their structure and formalization have improved progressively over time. These recommendations aim at describing the link between quality and safety management through its organization scheme based on quality-safety policy, process approach, document management and quality measurement. Dedicated tools, such as experience feedback, a priori risk mapping, to-do-lists and check-lists are shown as examples and recommended as routine practice.

Abstract
This paper investigates ballistic motions in walking quadrupeds on a horizontal plane. The study is carried out on a quadruped consisting of a body and four identical two-link legs. Each leg has a knee joint and is connected to the body by a haunch joint. Three types of quadruped gaits, bound, amble, and trot, are studied. None of these gaits complies with a flight phase, but they all involve simultaneous and identical motion of two legs. Muscle activities are commonly believed to alternate with periods of relaxation. Our study, therefore, assumes that the swing phase is ballistic, i.e., no active control torque is exerted. Ballistic motion is achieved through appropriate initial velocities. These velocities result from impulsive active control torques and ground reactions exerted at the boundary instants of the single support phase. Natural ballistic motions are shown to exist for the three gaits and for each valid walking velocity class. Torque cost analysis shows that amble and trot gaits are more efficient than bound.

Abstract
Based on the original combination of picosecond acoustics and diamond anvils cell, recent improvements to accurately measure hypersonic sound velocities of liquids and solids under extreme conditions are described. To illustrate the capability of this technique, results are given on the pressure and temperature dependence of acoustic properties for three prototypical cases: polycrystal (iron), single-crystal (silicon) and liquid (mercury) samples. It is shown that such technique also enables the determination of the density as a function of pressure for liquids, of the complete set of elastic constants for single crystals, and of the melting curve for any kind of material. High pressure ultrafast acoustic spectroscopy technique clearly opens opportunities to measure thermodynamical properties under previously unattainable extreme conditions. Beyond physics, this state-of-the-art experiment would thus be useful in many other fields such as nonlinear acoustics, oceanography, petrology, in of view. A brief description of new developments and future directions of works conclude the article.

Abstract
The properties of optical to acoustic transduction of semiconductor superlattices have been explored for several years in the sub terahertz frequency range. Using femtosecond laser pulses focused on these structures, acoustic modes are excited with a frequency related to the periodicity of the structure stacking. We have shown that these acoustic waves can be extracted and can propagate in the underlying substrate. We study superlattices ability to be quasi monochromatic generators. On the other hand, superlattices have been found to be very sensitive and selective detectors. We present a set of experimental results concerning the generation, propagation over large distances and detection of acoustic waves at high frequencies, up to the challenging 1 THz by picosecond ultrasonics experiments in transmission geometry.

Abstract
PURPOSE This work proposes an evaluation of the Elekta XVI(®) kilovoltage cone-beam computed tomography imaging system. The average dose delivered for each acquisition protocol proposed by default by the manufacturer was measured with several detectors and compared to theoretical dose values given by Elekta. At the same time, an evaluation of image quality for pelvic protocols correlated to dose measurements in homogeneous and heterogeneous mediums allowed to optimize the use of the XVI(®) system. MATERIALS AND METHODS The dose was measured for each acquisition protocol (varying filters, FOV and collimations) with four detectors (CT pencil ion chamber, 0.3 and 0.125 cm(3) cylindrical ion chambers, radiothermoluminescent dosimeters) in a CTDI phantom. The dose evaluation in a heterogeneous medium was performed in an experimental anthropomorphic phantom simulating a male pelvis. Image quality was assessed with a Catphan(®) 600 phantom. RESULTS The average dose measured in a homogeneous medium was about 17 mGy and 25 mGy per acquisition for Pelvis and Prostate protocols and about 17 mGy and 1 mGy for Lung and Head protocols. The study performed with different detectors showed that doses obtained were of the same order of magnitude (± 10 %) and agreed with those supplied by the manufacturer. The evaluation of image quality correlated to the average dose measured allowed to optimize the use of XVI(®) acquisition protocols. Measurement results in a heterogeneous medium showed a dose decrease by a factor 1.5 for bone and by a factor 2 for titanium. CONCLUSION The study showed that theoretical values proposed by the manufacturer could be used to estimate the average dose delivered to the patient by the kV-CBCT imaging system. The analysis of all the results led to the implementation of a procedure allowing to optimize and account for the dose delivered to the patient by the CBCT imaging system and to report it in the patient folder.

Abstract
We show that distributed Bragg reflector GaAs/AlAs vertical cavities designed to confine photons are automatically optimal to confine phonons of the same wavelength, strongly enhancing their interaction. We study the impulsive generation of intense coherent and monochromatic acoustic phonons by following the time evolution of the elastic strain in picosecond-laser experiments. Efficient optical detection is assured by the strong phonon backaction on the high-Q optical cavity mode. Large optomechanical factors are reported (~THz/nm range). Pillar cavities based in these structures are predicted to display picogram effective masses, almost perfect sound extraction, and threshold powers for the stimulated emission of phonons in the range μW-mW, opening the way for the demonstration of phonon "lasing" by parametric instability in these devices.

Abstract
Nanophononic Bloch oscillations and Wannier-Stark ladders have been recently predicted to exist in specifically tailored structures formed by coupled nanocavities. Using pump-probe coherent phonon generation techniques we demonstrate that Bloch oscillations of terahertz acoustic phonons can be directly generated and probed in these complex nanostructures. In addition, by Fourier transforming the time traces we had access to the proper eigenmodes in the frequency domain, thus evidencing the related Wannier-Stark ladder. The observed Bloch oscillation dynamics are compared with simulations based on a model description of the coherent phonon generation and photoelastic detection processes.

Abstract
We report pump-probe time resolved reflectivity experiments in a hybrid air-Ni metal-BaTiO(3)/SrTiO(3) oxide mirror phonon cavity. We demonstrate that the generated coherent acoustic phonon spectra of the impulsively excited metallic film can be inhibited or enhanced in the phonon cavity with respect to a Ni film directly grown on a SrTiO(3) substrate. The experiments are compared with simulations that highlight the role of the phonon density of states in the coherent acoustic emission, extending concepts at the base of the optical Purcell effect to the field of phononics.

Abstract
Recent improvements to measure ultrasonic sound velocities of liquids under extreme conditions are described. Principle and feasibility of picosecond acoustics in liquids embedded in a diamond anvils cell are given. To illustrate the capability of these advances in the sound velocity measurement technique, original high pressure and high temperature results on the sound velocity of liquid mercury up to 5 GPa and 575 K are given. This high pressure technique will certainly be useful in several fundamental and applied problems in physics and many other fields such as geophysics, nonlinear acoustics, underwater sound, petrology or physical acoustics.

Abstract
We present an ultrahigh resolution Raman study of the lifetime of 1 THz acoustic phonons confined in nanocavities. We demonstrate that the cavity Q factor can be controlled by design. Anharmonicity contributes only marginally to limit the cavity phonon lifetime, even at room temperature, while thickness fluctuations in the scale of 1/10 of a unit cell are the main limitation for the performance of THz phonon cavities.

Abstract
We report an innovative high pressure method combining the diamond anvil cell device with the technique of picosecond ultrasonics. Such an approach allows us to measure sound velocity and attenuation of solids and liquids under pressure of tens of GPa, overcoming all the drawbacks of traditional techniques. The power of this experimental technique is demonstrated in studies of lattice dynamics and relaxation processes in a metallic single grain of AlPdMn quasicrystal, and in rare gas solids neon and argon.

Abstract
Ultrafast coherent generation of acoustic phonons is studied in a semiconductor optical microcavity. The confinement of the light pulse amplifies both the generation and the detection of phonons. In addition, the standing wave character of the photon field modifies the generation and detection phonon bandwidth. Coherent generation experiments in an acoustic nanocavity embedded in an optical microcavity are reported as a function of laser energy and incidence angle to evidence the separate role of the optical and exciton resonances. Amplified signals and phonon spectra modified by the optical confinement are demonstrated.

Abstract
Femtosecond pump-probe experiments on a Ga0.85In0.15As nanocavity enclosed by two Ga(0.85)In(0.15)As/AlAs phonon Bragg mirrors reveal selective generation of terahertz confined acoustic modes and regular folded phonons. Selective generation of the confined modes alone is achievable for laser excitation at certain energies below the mirror absorption edges, corresponding to electronic transitions within the cavity layer only. Calculations based on the photoelastic effect explain the experimental results. Decay times of cavity and regular modes evidence longer decay times and anharmonic effects for the cavity mode.

Abstract
We report on picosecond ultrasonic measurements obtained on aluminum and platinum nanostructures with variable dot size and lateral periodicity which realized a 2D phononic crystal. Performing investigations at different resolution scales, we have identified individual modes of vibration depending on the dot size, and mode of vibration strongly correlated with the bi-dimensional organization. The platinum dots sputtered on an aluminum layer have shown a behavior of isolated oscillators without any coupling between neighbor elements in this phononic crystal. The frequency of such normal modes, extracted from time resolved measurements are in good agreement with 3D finite element simulations. In contrast, with aluminum dot systems where the coupling is more efficient we observe a complex spectrum of vibrational modes related to the band structure induced by the bi-dimensional patterning.

Abstract
We report a direct determination of the dynamic behavior of confined acoustic phonons in nanocavities by picosecond acoustics. We provide the broadband, high resolution transmission amplitude curve in the subterahertz range, and we give evidence of resonant transmission peaks in three successive stop bands, in quantitative agreement with acoustic simulations. We furthermore demonstrate transit times in the nanosecond range at the cavity peaks reflecting the strong confinement of resonant phonons within the cavity layer. On the other hand, picosecond transit times are measured in the stop band, shorter than in any of the constituting materials, a tunneling effect well known both in photonic crystals and in macroscopic phononic systems.

We report the case of a patient with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma treated by bexaroten Targretin, a synthetic retinoid analog with specific affinity for retinoid X receptor. The treatment induced mixed hyperlipidemia and severe central hypothyroidism characterized by reduced TSH and thyroxine serum levels. Only the pituitary thyreotrope function was affected. Targretin therapy can be maintained. Adverse drug events may be managed by fenofibrate Lipanthyl for dyslipidemia and high dose L-thyroxin Lévothyrox requiring serum free thyroxin level measurement for central hypothyroidism.

Abstract
Simulations of coupled interactions involving two opposite enzymatic reactions, solute diffusions, and electrostatic interactions between membrane charges and charged solutes were conducted under a fixed kinase-channel-phosphatase (KCP) topology oriented from the outside to the inside of a porous membrane structure. Depending on the kinase and phosphatase locations, we recently demonstrated that an active transport of a phosphorylated substrate may occur via the opposite topology, that is, a PCK topology. The present analysis demonstrates that, under a KCP membrane topology, which also behaves as a specific ATP-dependent transporter, the active transport of a neutral substrate may occur. This analogous active transport appears to be dependent on the phosphatase location and on the membrane surface potentials. A broad analysis of the role played by the main parameters taken into account in the model was conducted in order to define precisely the physico-chemical conditions and the membrane topology needed for the highest active transports within the shortest time.

Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated a role for calpains in cell migration through their capacity to regulate focal adhesion dynamics and rear retraction. In this study, we provide evidence that calpains also modulate membrane protrusion activity in fibroblasts. We find that an immortalized Capn4(-/-) fibroblast line displays an altered morphology, characterized by numerous thin membrane projections and increased transient membrane activity. Furthermore, we show that protrusion kinetics of lamellipodia at the leading edge are improperly regulated in Capn4(-/-) cells, leading to impaired net forward lamellipodial extension. To address the isoform specific functions of calpain 1 and calpain 2 during cell protrusion, we stably introduced small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) targeting each isoform into a fibroblast cell line. Despite a loss in calpain 1 activity, calpain 1 knockdown cells show normal morphology and membrane protrusion dynamics. However, cells in which calpain 2 is knocked down are characterized by a protrusive morphology, increased transient membrane activity and altered protrusion kinetics, similar to the Capn4(-/-) fibroblasts. Additionally, we find that calpain 2, but not calpain 1, is required for proteolysis of the cytoskeletal and focal adhesion proteins FAK, paxillin, spectrin, and talin. Together, our findings support a novel role for calpain 2 in limiting membrane protrusions and in regulating lamellipodial dynamics at the leading edge of migrating cells.

Simulations of coupled interactions involving enzymatic reaction diffusion and electrostatic interactions were conducted under a fixed phosphatase-channel-kinase (PCK) topology oriented from the outside to the inside of a charged membrane structure. Depending on the phosphatase and kinase locations, we recently demonstrated that active transport of a phosphorylated substrate may occur via this PCK topology. The present analysis demonstrates that, if in addition to this topology, a phosphatase activity (P(1)) is also present on the inner side of the membrane, but outside the unstirred layer surrounding the inner membrane surface, then active transport of the corresponding unphosphorylated substrate may also occur. Therefore, this PCK membrane topology, which behaves as a specific ATP-dependent transporter, appears as a general topology permitting; first, on its own the active transport of a phosphorylated substrate; second, when associated with a phosphatase acting in the bulk of the receiver compartment, the active transport of the corresponding unphosphorylated substrate, that is, in most cases, the transport of an uncharged substrate. The general mathematical model given permits the active transport of a phosphorylated substrate to be analyzed (in the absence of P(1)), the active transport of an unphosphorylated substrate (in the presence of P(1)), whatever the charge distributions on both sides of the membrane surface and whatever the positions of the membrane-bound phosphatase and the membrane-bound kinase. This general model also takes into account the consumption of ATP occurring into the receiver compartment during the time course of these transport phenomena. A broad analysis of the role played by the main parameters taken into account in the model was conducted to precisely define the physicochemical conditions and the membrane topology needed for the highest active transports within the shortest time.

Abstract
The coupling of diffusion, reaction, and electrostatic interactions existing in the microenvironment of permeable and charged bi-enzymatic membranes has led to the concept of biomimetic membranes. These membranes permit the active and specific transport of small hydrophilic molecules against their concentration gradients, at constant temperature and pressure. This study shows that such membranes behave in totally different ways, depending both on the relative position of the two enzymes, either within or outside the ionic double layer, and on the membrane surface potentials.

Abstract
Coupled interrelations occurring between a phosphatase/kinase reaction sequence acting in unstirred layers and on both sides of a charged biomembrane pore structure are presented as a plausible kinetic model for the primary active transport of phosphorylated molecules. Simulations conducted at the cell level and with credible numerical values demonstrate that the enzymes positions strongly regulate the membrane permeability for the transported substrate. Depending on both the enzymes positions (more or less far from the membrane) and the membrane charges, the membrane may appear either impervious, either permeable or able to actively transport a phosphorylated substrate. Globally all happens as if, in function of the enzymes positions, a permanent pore may be regulated, changing from a more closed to a more open conformation.

Abstract
We show that the nonlinear behavior of transverse acoustic waves can reveal the anisotropic structure of an icosahedral quasicrystal, at the macroscopic level. We report experiments performed in i-Al-Pd-Mn. We observe that a primary transverse acoustic wave can generate a second harmonic transverse acoustic wave. We also observe a specific relation between the polarization directions of those waves. These observations are manifestations on a macroscopic scale of the long-range order in quasicrystals.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of factor Xa inhibitors on the prothrombinase activity of platelet-derived microparticles in vitro and in vivo. The factor Xa inhibitors studied were DX9065A (a direct factor Xa inhibitor) and Sanorg34006 (an antithrombin (AT)-mediated factor Xa inhibitor). Microparticles formed from the platelet surface following activation were isolated by size exclusion gel chromatography. After purification, their presence was detected by their procoagulant activity and by flow cytometry. Our results show that factor Xa and/or factor Va were present at the surface of the platelet-derived microparticles. Prothrombinase formed on the microparticles was inhibited by factor Xa inhibitors at IC50 values of 0.45+/-0.05 and 0.045+/-0.005 microM for DX9065A and AT-Sanorg34006 respectively. In an experiment aimed at determining the kinetics of microparticles formation we demonstrated that thrombin traces were sufficient to induce the formation of a significant quantity of microparticles. Both factor Xa inhibitors delayed the formation of microparticles by delaying thrombin generation. The thrombogenic effect of the microparticles were studied in vivo in a modified arterio-venous shunt model in the rat. In this model, the increase in the thrombus weigh due to microparticles or phospholipids did not differ significantly (33% and 23% respectively). In these conditions, prothrombinase activity seemed to play a lesser role in the thrombogenic effect than phospholipids. Nevertheless, factor Xa inhibitors were efficient and inhibited thrombus formation in a dose-dependent manner. These results demonstrate that platelet-derived microparticles display a potent prothrombotic effect in vivo and show that factor Xa inhibitors are potent antithrombotic compounds when thrombosis was induced by microparticles.

Abstract
The technique for treating total body irradiation patients used at the centre involves no compensation for the inhomogeneity of patient shape. Dose is prescribed to the lung, and monitor units are derived from standard data depending on the external dimensions of the patient at nipple level. Dose measurements were made during standard treatments on three paediatric anthropomorphic phantoms representing children of 5, 10 and 15 years of age. The results confirmed that the measured dose to the lung was within 4% of the prescribed dose, and dose homogeneity was within +/- 5%, excluding the neck, where the higher measured doses were still within tissue tolerance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To study longitudinal biological monitoring data on urinary and blood cadmium collected in a small cohort of nine workers who had been brazing for several years with solders containing cadmium. METHODS Cadmium was measured by neutron activation analysis in livers and kidneys, and estimates of renal function were carried out in 1983 and 1995. During the intervening period exposure to cadmium was dramatically reduced by local exhaust ventilation control and substitution of the solder containing cadmium. RESULTS From urinary protein measurements there was evidence within the group of increasing renal tubular damage over the 12 year period, even though exposure to cadmium was dramatically reduced over this period and almost eliminated by 1995. There was no evidence from serum creatinine of decreasing glomerular filtration rate, and the renal tubular handling of calcium, phosphate, or urate had not worsened significantly. Blood and urinary cadmium concentrations reduced significantly over the 12 year period but were still substantial in 1995. Blood cadmium concentrations tended to reflect cadmium body burden in 1995 when exposure had been low for several years, and decreased most significantly during 1983-90. By contrast urinary cadmium concentrations only decreased significantly from about 1990 onwards. Urinary cadmium was not significantly correlated with liver or kidney cadmium concentration in either 1983 or 1995. This may be due to the level of tubular dysfunction in the cohort. Calculated cumulative excretion of cadmium over the 12 year period was substantially greater than the loss of cadmium measured in livers and kidneys and the derived loss in body burden. Reasons for this are discussed. It is possible that in cohorts, where renal damage is apparent, urinary concentrations reflect a substantial component of current exposure rather than stored body losses. CONCLUSIONS The data reinforce the concept that blood cadmium concentrations may not always reflect recent exposure, but may reflect body burden derived from historical exposure depending on the degree of current exposure; and that the decline in urinary and blood cadmium measurements after removal from, or reduction in, exposure will be slow and depend on the historical body burden.

The liver and kidney cadmium burdens of a population of 10 'jig solderers' were measured in 1983 and 1995 using similar IVNAA measuring systems. Cadmium exposure ceased in 1985. No significant variation in kidney content was observed. The mean body burden had fallen by 18%, due to a decrease of mean liver content of 35%.

Abstract
The detection of cattle latently infected with bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1) is of importance in control programs and in international trade activities. Therefore, tests to detect specific antibodies in serum must be highly sensitive. To evaluate the reliability of serological diagnosis of BHV1 infections in Europe, seventeen laboratories in 15 European countries were asked to determine BHV1-specific antibodies in a panel of bovine serum samples using the serological tests available in their laboratory. Laboratory tests included virus neutralisation tests (1, 2 and 24 h), indirect immunofluorescence tests and ELISAs. The serum panel consisted of 12 duplicate lyophilised samples which were randomly coded from 1 to 24 and included negative, weak- and strong-positive samples as well as international reference sera. Virus neutralisation tests and ELISAs showed a high specificity. All participants using neutralisation tests (n = 13) scored the negative samples correctly. Twenty three of 25 ELISAs showed 100% specificity. A serum sample obtained at day 7 after infection was scored as negative by all tests except one home-made blocking ELISA. Samples obtained at day 9 and at day 11 after infection were scored as positive by approximately half and by all tests, respectively. To score the weak-positive European reference standard (EU2) correctly, 24 h neutralisation tests (positive by 8 of 9 laboratories) and home-made blocking ELISAs (positive by 5 of 6 laboratories) were the most reliable. The results indicate that standardisation is urgently needed to ensure that BHV1-infected animals with low antibody titres are recognised.

Abstract
A study, consisting of three trials, was undertaken in order to find standard reference sera for use in serological diagnostic procedures for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) in the European Union (EU). A total of forty-nine laboratories participated in the trials, in which panels of positive, weak positive, and negative candidate sera were tested blind by neutralisation, indirect and blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, indirect immunofluorescence and passive haemagglutination. A serum which scored positive in all tests in all laboratories was selected as a strong positive standard serum. The chosen negative standard serum gave negative results in virtually all tests. A 1/36 dilution of a positive serum was chosen as the weak positive standard serum and only very sensitive techniques were able to score it positive. Three EU reference sera are now available for the standardisation of serological tests for IBR.

Abstract
Bovine leukemia virus (BLV), an oncovirus related to human T-cell leukemia virus type I, causes a B-cell lymphoproliferative syndrome in cattle, leading to an inversion of the T-cell/B-cell ratio and, more rarely, to a B-cell lymphosarcoma. Sheep are highly sensitive to BLV experimental infection and develop B-cell pathologies similar to those in cattle in 90% of the cases. BLV tropism for B cells has been well documented, but the infection of other cell populations may also be involved in the BLV-induced lymphoproliferative syndrome. We thus looked for BLV provirus in other leukocyte populations in sheep and cattle by using PCR. We found that while B cells harbor the highest proviral load, CD8+ T cells, monocytes, and granulocytes, but not CD4+ T cells, also bear BLV provirus. As previously described, we found that persistent lymphocytosis in cows is characterized by an expansion of the CD5+ B-cell subpopulation but we did not confirm this observation in sheep in which the expanded B-cell population expressed the CD11b marker. Nevertheless, BLV could be detected both in bovine CD5+ and CD5- B cells and in sheep CD11b+ and CD11b- B cells, indicating that the restricted BLV tropism for a specific B-cell subpopulation cannot explain its expansion encountered in BLV infection. Altogether, this work shows that BLV tropism in leukocytes is wider than previously thought. These results lead the way to further studies of cellular interactions among B cells and other leukocytes that may intervene in the development of the lymphoproliferative syndrome induced by BLV infection.

Abstract
A comparison is made of serological diagnostic procedures used for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis in the European Community. A panel of 65 sera, including positive, doubtful, negative and diluted samples was dispatched to nine different European laboratories and tested by neutralisation, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), indirect immunofluorescence and passive haemagglutination, according to the methods used in each laboratory. The results showed good agreement between the various tests for positive and negative sera. However, considerable variability between tests was noted in the "doubtful" category of sera. The highest test sensitivity, as judged by the detection limit for samples serially diluted in negative serum, was found with the blocking ELISAs. A need was identified for international standard reference sera to be made available.
