Personality Traits Interact With Sleep and Biological Rhythm in Patients With Bipolar Disorder

ABSTRACT

Sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm changes in bipolar disorder (BD) may have behavioral components as well as biological components. This study aimed to examine the relationship between personality traits, sleep and circadian rhythm in BD. A total of 150 participants with BD, and 150 healthy controls completed the Big Five Personality Test-50 (B5PT-50-TR), Biological Rhythm Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN), Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Young Mania Rating Scale and Beck Depression Inventory. In the BD group, B5PT-50-TR emotional stability and openness subscale scores were significantly lower in comparison with the healthy control group. Agreeableness and emotional stability subscales were covariates for the BRIAN sleep subscale and emotional stability was a covariate for PSQI total score. Emotional instability might be a vulnerability factor for sleep disorders and biological rhythm abnormalities in BD. Improvement in emotional instability may relieve sleep disorders and biological rhythm, thereby leading to better treatment outcomes in BD.

Psychological Resilience and Stress Coping Styles in Migraine Patients

PURPOSE

It was aimed to determine the level of psychological resilience and to investigate the psychological and clinical parameters that affect the resilience level in migraine patients.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

A total of 100 migraine patients and 100 healthy controls who agreed to participate in the study filled in the sociodemographic data form and also Beck Anxiety Scale, Beck Depression Scale, Psychological Resilience Scale for Adults, Perceived Stress Scale, Stress Coping Styles Scale, and Psychological Well-Being Scale. Also, the results of Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS) were recorded in order to determine the clinical parameters of migraine patients.

RESULTS

When the migraine patients were examined in terms of the number of painful days in the last 3 months, duration of illness, and correlations between clinical scales, there were statistically significant correlations between the psychological resilience scale and well-being (r=0.691 p<0.001), positive coping styles (r=0.676 p<0.001), Beck depression scale (r=-0.670 p<0.001).

CONCLUSION

Self-confident approach, social support-seeking approach, and level of psychological well-being predict psychological resilience in migraine patients. Interventions aiming to increase the level of psychological resilience, which is negatively correlated with depression, are expected to increase the quality of life of patients with migraine.

The effect of stress coping styles on empathy level in students of medicine: A cross-sectional study

We aimed to investigate the change in the ability of clinical empathy, which has a special importance in physician-patient relationship, during medical school years, and its relationship between stress coping styles. After the preliminary interview with 292 volunteer medical school students, the students were asked to answer the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale, the Stress Coping Scale, and the student version of the Jefferson Doctor Empathy Scale. This study shows that the lowest median of the empathy level among medical school students was in the sixth year, and the decrease in empathy in the sixth year was mostly in the perspective taking component. When the relationship between empathy and coping styles with stress was examined, it was seen that self-confident approach was positively correlated with perspective taking (R = 0.182, P = .002) and standing in the patient's shoes (R = 0.172, P = .003). It was observed that the helpless approach, which is one of the negative coping styles, was inversely correlated with standing in the patient's shoes. As a result of the study, it was determined that the styles of coping with stress were related to the components of empathy, except for compassionate care. The self-confidence approach has an impact on the ability of standing in the patient's shoes and perspective-taking. During medical education, focusing on the approaches that increase the student's self-confidence against the stress will encounter throughout their professional life will undoubtedly increase the level of empathy.

The mediating roles of depression, anxiety, and psychological pain in the relationship between chronotype and suicide in patients with depressive disorder

The evening chronotype has been associated with depressive symptoms and suicidality; however, the underlying mechanisms are still under investigation. Research has shown that psychological pain, or feelings of suffering, is closely related to suicidality. Therefore, the aim of the study is to determine whether psychological pain, anxiety, and depressive symptoms mediate the association between chronotype and depressive symptoms in patients with depression and in healthy controls. A total of 118 patients with depressive disorder and 85 healthy controls completed the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Suicide Probability Scale, and the Mee-Bunney Psychological Pain Assessment Scale. Mediation analysis revealed that the relationship between eveningness and suicidality was fully mediated by depression and psychological pain and not by anxiety. These findings highlight that psychological pain is an important psychological dimension in the relationship between eveningness and suicidality.

The effect of alexithymic characteristics on perceived stress and health anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic

OBJECTIVE

The anxiety of life that comes with the pandemic process increases the health anxiety and the level of perceived stress. However, there are uncertainties about which individuals are more sensitive. This study aims to investigate the effects of alexithymic characteristics on health anxiety and perceived stress.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The authors invited the participants to study via social media and e-mail. The data of 793 individuals, aged 18-65, collected over the internet (Google Forms) between November and December 2020 were statistically evaluated. Evaluations were made with the sociodemographic data form, the General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12), the Health Anxiety Scale (HAS), the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS).

RESULTS

In mediation analyzes between TAS subscales and HAS, Difficulty in Identifying Feelings (DIF) most strongly predicted HAS (B=0.469, p<0.001) and indirectly affected HAS only through GHQ (CS: 0.08, B=0.108, SE:0.021, CI: 0.070, 0.153). However, both PSS (CS: 0.0128, B=0.084, SE:0.027, CI: 0.032, 0.139) and GHQ (CS: 0.02, B=0.139, SE:0.028, CI: 0.090, 0.198) played a mediating role between Difficulty Describing Feelings (DDF) and HAS.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study suggests that individuals with alexithymic features are more sensitive to stress during periods of health-related increased stress, such as pandemics, and that individuals with alexithymic features should be given priority in psychotherapeutic interventions.
