P04.18 Heterogeneity and plasticity of integrin α5β1 expression in glioblastoma stem cells

BACKGROUND

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most frequent and deadliest type of central nervous system tumors. Despite the treatment by the Stupp protocol, almost all patients relapse and new therapeutic protocols have been unsuccessful for ameliorating patient survival. Molecular heterogeneity of GBM and existence of glioma stem cells (GSC) may be linked to therapy resistance and recurrence. We demonstrated earlier that α5β1 integrin is a GBM therapeutic target which participate to therapy resistance; a high expression in patient tumors is linked to a worse prognosis. Expression of α5β1 integrin is heterogeneous inter- and intra-tumorally. We particularly addressed the role of glioma stem cell plasticity in the modulation of the integrin expression. Stem cells reside in specific niches (perivascular or hypoxic niches) in the tumor and are at the origin of the more differentiated tumor cell bulk. Metabolism is known to change between the different GSC states and may be affected by or may affect the integrin expression. The aim of our work is therefore to consider the expression of the integrin α5β1 in relationship with GSC differentiation or in hypoxic environment and with cell metabolism.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Ten different patient-derived glioma stem cell lines were investigated. Cell culture in stem cell medium (neurospheres) or differentiation medium (adherent cell monolayer) was made in normoxia (21% O2) or hypoxia (1%O2). Alternatively, chemically-induced hypoxia (cobalt chloride/desferoxiamine) was used. Integrin expression was kinetically checked at the mRNA (RT-qPCR) or protein (Western blot) levels. Cell metabolism was investigated with the Seahorse Xfp technology and by HRMAS-NMR.

RESULTS

No GSC lines (neurospheres) expressed the α5β1 integrin. Interestingly, only half of them did after differentiation suggesting a first level of heterogeneity. A second level of heterogeneity was observed in hypoxic conditions provoking induction of integrin α5β1 expression in only some non-differentiated GSC. Three categories of GSC were thus characterized: one able to express the integrin in hypoxia and after differentiation, one never expressing it and the third one only after differentiation. Cell metabolism differed between GSC before and after differentiation and in presence of integrin α5β1 antagonists. Specific glioma regulator network analysis revealed new targets to be inhibited concomitantly with the integrin.

CONCLUSION

Data suggest that α5β1 integrin expression may be induced by different signaling pathways. Molecular switches may occur either when stem cells differentiate to tumor cells but also directly in stem cells in hypoxic niches. Characterization of α5β1 integrin expression drivers may help to find new therapeutic targets but also to delineate subpopulation of patients who would benefit from an anti-integrin strategy.

Imaging the Néel vector switching in the monolayer antiferromagnet MnPSe3 with strain-controlled Ising order

Antiferromagnets are interesting materials for spintronics because of their faster dynamics and robustness against perturbations from magnetic fields. Control of the antiferromagnetic order constitutes an important step towards applications, but has been limited to bulk materials so far. Here, using spatially resolved second-harmonic generation, we show direct evidence of long-range antiferromagnetic order and Ising-type Néel vector switching in monolayer MnPSe₃ with large XY anisotropy. In additional to thermally induced switching, uniaxial strain can rotate the Néel vector, aligning it to a general in-plane direction irrespective of the crystal axes. A change of the universality class of the phase transition in the XY model under uniaxial strain causes this emergence of strain-controlled Ising order in the XY magnet MnPSe₃. Our discovery is a further ingredient for compact antiferromagnetic spintronic devices in the two-dimensional limit.

Total Angular Momentum Dichroism of the Terahertz Vortex Beams at the Antiferromagnetic Resonances

Terahertz vortex beams with different superposition of the orbital angular momentum l=±1, ±2, ±3, and ±4 and spin angular momentum σ=±1 were used to study antiferromagnetic (AFM) resonances in TbFe_{3}(BO_{3})_{4} and Ni_{3}TeO_{6} single crystals. In both materials we observed a strong vortex beam dichroism for the AFM resonances that are split in external magnetic field. The magnitude of the vortex dichroism is comparable to that for conventional circular dichroism due to σ. The selection rules at the AFM resonances are governed by the total angular momentum of the vortex beam: j=σ+l. In particular, for l=±2, ±3, and ±4 the sign of l is shown to dominate over that for conventional circular polarization σ.

Optical Signature of a Crossover from Mott- to Slater-Type Gap in Sr_{2}Ir_{1-x}Rh_{x}O_{4}

With optical spectroscopy we provide evidence that the insulator-metal transition in Sr_{2}Ir_{1-x}Rh_{x}O_{4} occurs close to a crossover from the Mott- to the Slater-type. The Mott gap at x=0 persists to high temperature and evolves without an anomaly across the Néel temperature, T_{N}. Upon Rh doping, it collapses rather rapidly and vanishes around x=0.055. Notably, just as the Mott gap vanishes yet another gap appears that is of the Slater-type and develops right below T_{N}. This Slater gap is only partial and is accompanied by a reduced scattering rate of the remaining free carriers, similar as in the parent compounds of the iron arsenide superconductors.

Terahertz Vortex Beam as a Spectroscopic Probe of Magnetic Excitations

Circularly polarized light with spin angular momentum is one of the most valuable probes of magnetism. We demonstrate that light beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM), or vortex beams, can also couple to magnetism exhibiting dichroisms in a magnetized medium. Resonant optical absorption in a ferrimagnetic crystal depends strongly on both the handedness of the vortex and the direction of the beam propagation with respect to the sample magnetization. This effect exceeds the conventional dichroism for circularly polarized light. Our results demonstrate the high potential of the vortex beams with OAM as a new spectroscopic probe of magnetism in matter.

Scaling of the Fano Effect of the In-Plane Fe-As Phonon and the Superconducting Critical Temperature in Ba_{1-x}K_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}

By means of infrared spectroscopy, we determine the temperature-doping phase diagram of the Fano effect for the in-plane Fe-As stretching mode in Ba_{1-x}K_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}. The Fano parameter 1/q^{2}, which is a measure of the phonon coupling to the electronic particle-hole continuum, shows a remarkable sensitivity to the magnetic and structural orderings at low temperatures. Most strikingly, at elevated temperatures in the paramagnetic tetragonal state we observe a linear correlation between 1/q^{2} and the superconducting critical temperature T_{c}. Based on theoretical calculations and symmetry considerations, we identify the relevant interband transitions that are coupled to the Fe-As mode. In particular, we show that a sizable xy orbital component at the Fermi level is fundamental for the Fano effect and, thus, possibly also for the superconducting pairing.

Temperature-Driven Topological Phase Transition and Intermediate Dirac Semimetal Phase in ZrTe_{5}

We present an infrared spectroscopy study of ZrTe_{5}, which confirms a recent theoretical proposal that this material exhibits a temperature-driven topological quantum phase transition from a weak to a strong topological insulating state with an intermediate Dirac semimetal state around T_{p}≃138  K. Our study details the temperature evolution of the energy gap in the bulk electronic structure. We found that the energy gap closes around T_{p}, where the optical response exhibits characteristic signatures of a Dirac semimetal state, i.e., a linear frequency-dependent optical conductivity extrapolating to the origin (after subtracting a weak Drude response). This finding allows us to reconcile previous diverging reports about the topological nature of ZrTe_{5} in terms of a variation of T_{p} that depends on the crystal growth condition.

Surface Potential of a Planar Charged Lipid-Water Interface. What Do Vibrating Plate Methods, Second Harmonic and Sum Frequency Measure?

The interfacial electrical potential is an important parameter influencing, for instance, electrochemical reactions and biomolecular interactions at membranes. A deeper understanding of different methods that measure quantities related to the surface potential is thus of great scientific and technological relevance. We use lipid monolayers with varying charge density and thoroughly compare the results of surface potential measurements performed with the vibrating plate capacitor method and second harmonic generation spectroscopy. The two techniques provide very different results as a function of surface charge. Using the molecular information on lipid alkyl chain, lipid headgroup, and interfacial water provided by sum frequency generation spectroscopy, we disentangle the different contributions to the surface potential measured by the different techniques. Our results show that the two distinct approaches are dominated by different molecular moieties and effects. While the shape of the SPOT method response as a function of charge density is dominated by the lipid carbonyl groups, the SHG results contain contributions from the interfacial water molecules, the lipids and hyper-Rayleigh scattering.

Radiolabeled F(ab')2-cetuximab for theranostic purposes in colorectal and skin tumor-bearing mice models

PURPOSE

This study aimed to investigate theranostic strategies in colorectal and skin cancer based on fragments of cetuximab, an anti-EGFR mAb, labeled with radionuclide with imaging and therapeutic properties, ¹¹¹In and ¹⁷⁷Lu, respectively.

METHODS

We designed F(ab')₂-fragments of cetuximab radiolabeled with ¹¹¹In and ¹⁷⁷Lu. ¹¹¹In-F(ab')₂-cetuximab tumor targeting and biodistribution were evaluated by SPECT in BalbC nude mice bearing primary colorectal tumors. The efficacy of ¹¹¹In-F(ab')₂-cetuximab to assess therapy efficacy was performed on BalbC nude mice bearing colorectal tumors receiving 17-DMAG, an HSP90 inhibitor. Therapeutic efficacy of the radioimmunotherapy based on ¹⁷⁷Lu-F(ab')₂-cetuximab was evaluated in SWISS nude mice bearing A431 tumors.

RESULTS

Radiolabeling procedure did not change F(ab')₂-cetuximab and cetuximab immunoreactivity nor affinity for HER1 in vitro. ¹¹¹In-DOTAGA-F(ab')₂-cetuximab exhibited a peak tumor uptake at 24 h post-injection and showed a high tumor specificity determined by a significant decrease in tumor uptake after the addition of an excess of unlabeled-DOTAGA-F(ab')₂-cetuximab. SPECT imaging of ¹¹¹In-DOTAGA-F(ab')₂-cetuximab allowed an accurate evaluation of tumor growth and successfully predicted the decrease in tumor growth induced by 17-DMAG. Finally, ¹⁷⁷Lu-DOTAGA-F(ab')₂-cetuximab radioimmunotherapy showed a significant reduction of tumor growth at 4 and 8 MBq doses.

CONCLUSIONS

¹¹¹In-DOTAGA-F(ab')₂-cetuximab is a reliable and stable tool for specific in vivo tumor targeting and is suitable for therapy efficacy assessment. ¹⁷⁷Lu-DOTAGA-F(ab')₂-cetuximab is an interesting theranostic tool allowing therapy and imaging.

Abstract P5-01-03: HER2 imaging by SPECT-CT using 111In radiolabeled pertuzumab-fab DOTAGA-conjugate: A proof of concept study in a preclinical model of breast cancer

Introduction: HER2 is positive in approximately 20-30% of all breast cancer and is associated with poor prognosis, higher mortality and higher metastatic incidence. Current diagnosis of HER2 expression relies on invasive methods requiring tissue biopsy which can lead to variable results due to inter/intra-metastatic and intratumoral heterogeneity in breast cancers. It has been recently demonstrated that HER2 molecular imaging based on pertuzumab, an antibody targeting HER2, could represent a more accurate non-invasive method to assess HER2 expression and evaluate its spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Aim: In the present study, we aimed at developing radiolabeled pertuzumab Fab fragments for HER2 imaging. Tumor uptake of radiolabeled Fab was evaluated in an animal model of HER2 breast cancer by SPECT-CT, and the impact of trastuzumab on HER2 imaging was assessed. The objective of this study was to validate the feasibility of HER2 imaging with a pertuzumab-derived probe and to evaluate the possible translation of such a probe for clinical use in patients treated or not with anti-HER2 therapy. Methods: Fab fragments of pertuzumab have been generated by papain digestion and bioconjugated with the bifunctional chelating agent DOTAGA for incorporation of Indium 111 to generate an HER2-specific probe for SPECT (111In-DOTAGA-pertuzumab-Fab). The functionality of both radiolabeled Fab and whole pertuzumab was evaluated by in vitro assays using HER2-overexpressing human breast cancer cell line (HCC1954). Tumor uptake of pertuzumab-Fab and whole pertuzumab (111In-DOTAGA-Pertuzumab) has been evaluated in Balb/c nude mice bearing BT-474 tumors with or without pre-treatment with trastuzumab for 24h. Results: In the current study we demonstrate that Fab fragments of pertuzumab keep similar HER2 binding properties than whole pertuzumab and can therefore be a suitable HER2-targeted probe. In vivo, 111In-DOTAGA-pertuzumab-Fab showed better pharmacokinetics than whole pertuzumab with faster tumor uptake and blood clearance allowing faster imaging with better tumor/blood ratio. In addition, tumor uptake of 111In-DOTAGA-pertuzumab-Fab is not modified by pre-treatment with trastuzumab. Conclusion: We assume that radiolabeled pertuzumab-Fab should be of great interest if the intention to treat is based on anti-HER2 monoclonal antibodies-based therapies rather than small molecules (e.g. lapatinib). Interestingly, pertuzumab has been shown to be also beneficial in combination with trastuzumab and chemotherapy in non-metastatic patients through its approval for the neoadjuvant treatment and very recently in the APHINITY clinical trial aiming for an approval in the adjuvant treatment of early breast cancer. These data suggest that pertuzumab will be extensively used in various HER-2 positive breast cancers underlining the interest to perform molecular imaging of HER2 expression as a predictive biomarker of efficacy.

Structural, magnetic and electronic properties of pulsed-laser-deposition grown SrFeO3-δ thin films and SrFeO3-δ /La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 multilayers

We studied the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of [Formula: see text] (SFO) thin films and [Formula: see text]/[Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]MnO₃ (LCMO) superlattices that have been grown with pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] (LSAT) substrates. X-ray reflectometry and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) confirm the high structural quality of the films and flat and atomically sharp interfaces of the superlattices. The STEM data also reveal a difference in the interfacial layer stacking with a SrO layer at the LCMO/SFO and a LaO layer at the SFO/LCMO interfaces along the PLD growth direction. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) data suggest that the as grown SFO films and SFO/LCMO superlattices have an oxygen-deficient [Formula: see text] structure with I4/ mmm space group symmetry ([Formula: see text]). Subsequent ozone annealed SFO films are consistent with an almost oxygen stoichiometric structure ([Formula: see text]). The electronic and magnetic properties of these SFO films are similar to the ones of corresponding single crystals. In particular, the as grown [Formula: see text] films are insulating whereas the ozone annealed films are metallic. The magneto-resistance effects of the as grown SFO films have a similar magnitude as in the single crystals, but extend over a much wider temperature range. Last but not least, for the SFO/LCMO superlattices we observe a rather large exchange bias effect that varies as a function of the cooling field.

Experimental Study on the Behavior of TiN and Ti2O3 Inclusions in Contact with CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO Slags

TiN and Ti₂O₃ are the predominant inclusion types in Ti-alloyed ferritic chromium stainless steels. In order to ensure the required steel cleanness level, an effective removal of such inclusions in the slag during secondary metallurgy is essential. This inclusion removal predominantly takes place via dissolution of the inclusion in the slag. The dissolution behavior of TiN and Ti₂O₃ in CaO-SiO₂-Al₂O₃-MgO slags as well as their agglomeration behavior in the liquid steel is investigated using High Temperature Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy and Tammann Furnace experiments. Thermodynamic calculations are performed using FactSage 7.0. The behavior of TiN is observed to be completely different to that of oxides. Ti₂O₃ dissolves quickly in slags, and its dissolution behavior is comparable to that of other already well examined oxides. In contrast, TiN shows a very intense gas reaction which is attributed to the release of nitrogen during contact with slag. Slags with higher SiO₂ content show a significantly higher ability for the dissolution of TiN as compared to Al₂O₃-rich slags. The gas reaction is found to also significantly influence the final steel cleanness. Despite the easy absorption of TiN in the slag, the formed nitrogen supports the formation of pinholes in the steel.

Minor changes in the macrocyclic ligands but major consequences on the efficiency of gold nanoparticles designed for radiosensitization

Many studies have been devoted to adapting the design of gold nanoparticles to efficiently exploit their promising capability to enhance the effects of radiotherapy. In particular, the addition of magnetic resonance imaging modality constitutes an attractive strategy for enhancing the selectivity of radiotherapy since it allows the determination of the most suited delay between the injection of nanoparticles and irradiation. This requires the functionalization of the gold core by an organic shell composed of thiolated gadolinium chelates. The risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis induced by the release of gadolinium ions should encourage the use of macrocyclic chelators which form highly stable and inert complexes with gadolinium ions. In this context, three types of gold nanoparticles (Au@DTDOTA, Au@TADOTA and Au@TADOTAGA) combining MRI, nuclear imaging and radiosensitization have been developed with different macrocyclic ligands anchored onto the gold cores. Despite similarities in size and organic shell composition, the distribution of gadolinium chelate-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@TADOTA-Gd and Au@TADOTAGA-Gd) in the tumor zone is clearly different. As a result, the intravenous injection of Au@TADOTAGA-Gd prior to the irradiation of 9L gliosarcoma bearing rats leads to the highest increase in lifespan whereas the radiophysical effects of Au@TADOTAGA-Gd and Au@TADOTA-Gd are very similar.

Importance of spin-orbit interaction for the electron spin relaxation in organic semiconductors

Despite the great interest organic spintronics has recently attracted, there is only a partial understanding of the fundamental physics behind electron spin relaxation in organic semiconductors. Mechanisms based on hyperfine interaction have been demonstrated, but the role of the spin-orbit interaction remains elusive. Here, we report muon spin spectroscopy and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements on two series of molecular semiconductors in which the strength of the spin-orbit interaction has been systematically modified with a targeted chemical substitution of different atoms at a particular molecular site. We find that the spin-orbit interaction is a significant source of electron spin relaxation in these materials.

Electric-field-induced polar order and localization of the confined electrons in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

With ellipsometry, x-ray diffraction, and resistance measurements we investigated the electric-field effect on the confined electrons at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. We obtained evidence that the localization of the electrons at negative gate voltage is induced, or at least enhanced, by a polar phase transition in SrTiO3 which strongly reduces the lattice polarizability and the subsequent screening. In particular, we show that the charge localization and the polar order of SrTiO3 both develop below ∼50  K and exhibit similar, unipolar hysteresis loops as a function of the gate voltage.

Magnetic proximity effect in YBa2Cu3O7/La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO3 and YBa2Cu3O7/LaMnO(3+δ) superlattices

Using neutron reflectometry and resonant x-ray techniques we studied the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) in superlattices composed of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 and ferromagnetic-metallic La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 or ferromagnetic-insulating LaMnO(3+δ). We find that the MPE strongly depends on the electronic state of the manganite layers, being pronounced for the ferromagnetic-metallic La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 and almost absent for ferromagnetic-insulating LaMnO(3+δ). We also detail the change of the magnetic depth profile due to the MPE and provide evidence for its intrinsic nature.

Ultrafast transient generation of spin-density-wave order in the normal state of BaFe2As2 driven by coherent lattice vibrations

The interplay among charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom in solids gives rise to intriguing macroscopic quantum phenomena such as colossal magnetoresistance, multiferroicity and high-temperature superconductivity. Strong coupling or competition between various orders in these systems presents the key to manipulate their functional properties by means of external perturbations such as electric and magnetic fields or pressure. Ultrashort and intense optical pulses have emerged as an interesting tool to investigate elementary dynamics and control material properties by melting an existing order. Here, we employ few-cycle multi-terahertz pulses to resonantly probe the evolution of the spin-density-wave (SDW) gap of the pnictide compound BaFe(2)As(2) following excitation with a femtosecond optical pulse. When starting in the low-temperature ground state, optical excitation results in a melting of the SDW order, followed by ultrafast recovery. In contrast, the SDW gap is induced when we excite the normal state above the transition temperature. Very surprisingly, the transient ordering quasi-adiabatically follows a coherent lattice oscillation at a frequency as high as 5.5 THz. Our results attest to a pronounced spin-phonon coupling in pnictides that supports rapid development of a macroscopic order on small vibrational displacement even without breaking the symmetry of the crystal.

Evidence of a precursor superconducting phase at temperatures as high as 180 K in RBa2Cu3O(7-δ) (R=Y, Gd, Eu) superconducting crystals from infrared spectroscopy

We show that a multilayer analysis of the infrared c-axis response of RBa2Cu3O(7-δ) (R=Y, Gd, Eu) provides important new information about the anomalous normal-state properties of underdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors. In addition to competing correlations which give rise to a pseudogap that depletes the low-energy electronic states below T*≫T(c), it enables us to identify the onset of a precursor superconducting state below T(ons)>T(c). We map out the doping phase diagram of T(ons) which reaches a maximum of 180 K at strong underdoping and present magnetic field dependent data which confirm our conclusions.

Engineering spin propagation across a hybrid organic/inorganic interface using a polar layer

Spintronics has shown a remarkable and rapid development, for example from the initial discovery of giant magnetoresistance in spin valves to their ubiquity in hard-disk read heads in a relatively short time. However, the ability to fully harness electron spin as another degree of freedom in semiconductor devices has been slower to take off. One future avenue that may expand the spintronic technology base is to take advantage of the flexibility intrinsic to organic semiconductors (OSCs), where it is possible to engineer and control their electronic properties and tailor them to obtain new device concepts. Here we show that we can control the spin polarization of extracted charge carriers from an OSC by the inclusion of a thin interfacial layer of polar material. The electric dipole moment brought about by this layer shifts the OSC highest occupied molecular orbital with respect to the Fermi energy of the ferromagnetic contact. This approach allows us full control of the spin band appropriate for charge-carrier extraction, opening up new spintronic device concepts for future exploitation.

Femtosecond response of quasiparticles and phonons in superconducting YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-δ) studied by wideband terahertz spectroscopy

We measure the anisotropic midinfrared response of electrons and phonons in bulk YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-δ) after femtosecond photoexcitation. A line shape analysis of specific lattice modes reveals their transient occupation and coupling to the superconducting condensate. The apex oxygen vibration is strongly excited within 150 fs, demonstrating that the lattice absorbs a major portion of the pump energy before the quasiparticles are thermalized. Our results attest to substantial electron-phonon scattering and introduce a powerful concept probing electron-lattice interactions in a variety of complex materials.

Coexistence and competition of magnetism and superconductivity on the nanometer scale in underdoped BaFe1.89Co0.11As2

We report muon spin rotation (μSR) and infrared spectroscopy experiments on underdoped BaFe1.89Co0.11As2 which show that bulk magnetism and superconductivity (SC) coexist and compete on the nanometer length scale. Our combined data reveal a bulk magnetic order, likely due to an incommensurate spin density wave (SDW), which develops below T(mag)≈32  K and becomes reduced in magnitude (but not in volume) below Tc=21.7  K. A slowly fluctuating precursor of the SDW seems to develop already below the structural transition at T(s)≈50  K. The bulk nature of SC is established by the μSR data which show a bulk SC vortex lattice and the IR data which reveal that the majority of low-energy states is gapped and participates in the condensate at T≪T(c).

Incommensurate magnetic order and dynamics induced by spinless impurities in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.6)

We report an inelastic-neutron-scattering and muon-spin-relaxation study of the effect of 2% spinless (Zn) impurities on the magnetic order and dynamics of YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.6), an underdoped high-temperature superconductor that exhibits a prominent spin pseudogap in its normal state. Zn substitution induces static magnetic order at low temperatures and triggers a large-scale spectral-weight redistribution from the magnetic resonant mode at 38 meV into uniaxial, incommensurate spin excitations with energies well below the spin pseudogap. These observations indicate a competition between incommensurate magnetic order and superconductivity close to a quantum critical point. Comparison to prior data on La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) suggests that this behavior is universal for the layered copper oxides and analogous to impurity-induced magnetic order in one-dimensional quantum magnets.

Dynamical response and confinement of the electrons at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface

With infrared ellipsometry and transport measurements we investigated the electrons at the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. We obtained a sheet carrier concentration of N(s) approximately = 5-9x10(13) cm(-2), an effective mass of m*=3.2+/-0.4m(e), and a strongly frequency dependent mobility. The latter are similar as in bulk SrTi(1-x)Nb(x)O3 and therefore suggestive of polaronic correlations. We also determined the vertical concentration profile which has a strongly asymmetric shape with a rapid initial decay over the first 2 nm and a pronounced tail that extends to about 11 nm.

Two-dimensional confinement of 3d{1} electrons in LaTiO_{3}/LaAlO{3} multilayers

We report spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements of the anisotropy of the interband transitions parallel and perpendicular to the planes of (LaTiO3)n(LaAlO3)5 multilayers with n=1-3. These provide direct information about the electronic structure of the two-dimensional (2D) 3d{1} state of the Ti ions. In combination with local density approximation, including a Hubbard U calculation, we suggest that 2D confinement in the TiO2 slabs lifts the degeneracy of the t{2g} states leaving only the planar d{xy} orbitals occupied. We outline that these multilayers can serve as a model system for the study of the t{2g} 2D Hubbard model.

Coexistence of static magnetism and superconductivity in SmFeAsO(1-x)F(x) as revealed by muon spin rotation

The recent observation of superconductivity with critical temperatures (Tc) up to 55 K in the pnictide RFeAsO(1-x)F(x), where R is a lanthanide, marks the first discovery of a non-copper-oxide-based layered high-Tc superconductor. It has raised the suspicion that these new materials share a similar pairing mechanism to the cuprate superconductors, as both families exhibit superconductivity following charge doping of a magnetic parent material. In this context, it is important to follow the evolution of the microscopic magnetic properties of the pnictides with doping and hence to determine whether magnetic correlations coexist with superconductivity. Here, we present a muon spin rotation study on SmFeAsO(1-x)F(x), with x=0-0.30 that shows that, as in the cuprates, static magnetism persists well into the superconducting regime. This analogy is quite surprising as the parent compounds of the two families have rather different magnetic ground states: itinerant spin density wave for the pnictides contrasted with the Mott-Hubbard insulator in the cuprates. Our findings therefore suggest that the proximity to magnetic order and associated soft magnetic fluctuations, rather than strong electronic correlations in the vicinity of a Mott-Hubbard transition, may be the key ingredients of high-Tc superconductors.

Giant superconductivity-induced modulation of the ferromagnetic magnetization in a cuprate-manganite superlattice

Artificial multilayers offer unique opportunities for combining materials with antagonistic orders such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism and thus to realize novel quantum states. In particular, oxide multilayers enable the utilization of the high superconducting transition temperature of the cuprates and the versatile magnetic properties of the colossal-magnetoresistance manganites. However, apart from exploratory work, the in-depth investigation of their unusual properties has only just begun. Here we present neutron reflectometry measurements of a [Y(0.6)Pr(0.4)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(7) (10 nm)/La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) (10 nm)](10) superlattice, which reveal a surprisingly large superconductivity-induced modulation of the vertical ferromagnetic magnetization profile. Most surprisingly, this modulation seems to involve the density rather than the orientation of the magnetization and is highly susceptible to the strain, which is transmitted from the SrTiO(3) substrate. We outline a possible explanation of this unusual superconductivity-induced phenomenon in terms of a phase separation between ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic nanodomains in the La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) layers.

Direct measurement of the electronic spin diffusion length in a fully functional organic spin valve by low-energy muon spin rotation

Electronic devices that use the spin degree of freedom hold unique prospects for future technology. The performance of these 'spintronic' devices relies heavily on the efficient transfer of spin polarization across different layers and interfaces. This complex transfer process depends on individual material properties and also, most importantly, on the structural and electronic properties of the interfaces between the different materials and defects that are common to real devices. Knowledge of these factors is especially important for the relatively new field of organic spintronics, where there is a severe lack of suitable experimental techniques that can yield depth-resolved information about the spin polarization of charge carriers within buried layers of real devices. Here, we present a new depth-resolved technique for measuring the spin polarization of current-injected electrons in an organic spin valve and find the temperature dependence of the measured spin diffusion length is correlated with the device magnetoresistance.

Dimensionality-controlled insulator-metal transition and correlated metallic state in 5d transition metal oxides Sr n+1Ir nO3n+1 (n=1, 2, and infinity)

We investigated the electronic structures of the 5d Ruddlesden-Popper series Sr n+1Ir nO3n+1 (n=1, 2, and infinity) using optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. As 5d orbitals are spatially more extended than 3d or 4d orbitals, it has been widely accepted that correlation effects are minimal in 5d compounds. However, we observed a Mott insulator-metal transition with a change of bandwidth as we increased n. In addition, the artificially synthesized perovskite SrIrO3 showed a very large mass enhancement of about 6, indicating that it was in a correlated metallic state.

Coexistence of magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity in the pnictide high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO1-xFx measured by muon spin rotation

Muon spin rotation experiments were performed on the pnictide high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO1-xFx with x=0.18 and 0.3. We observed an unusual enhancement of slow spin fluctuations in the vicinity of the superconducting transition which suggests that the spin fluctuations contribute to the formation of an unconventional superconducting state. An estimate of the in-plane penetration depth lambda ab(0)=190(5) nm was obtained, which confirms that the pnictide superconductors obey an Uemura-style relationship between Tc and lambda ab(0);(-2).

Superconducting energy gap and c-axis plasma frequency of (Nd,Sm)FeAsO0.82F0.18 superconductors from infrared ellipsometry

We present far-infrared ellipsometric measurements of polycrystalline samples of the pnictide superconductor RFeAsO0.82F0.18 (R=Nd and Sm). We find evidence that the electronic properties are strongly anisotropic such that the optical spectra are dominated by the weakly conducting c-axis response similar to the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. We deduce an upper limit of the c-axis superconducting plasma frequency of omega pl,c(SC)< or =260 cm(-1) corresponding to a lower limit of the c-axis magnetic penetration depth of lambda c > or =6 microm and lambda c/lambda ab > or =30 as compared to lambda ab=185 nm from muon spin rotation [A. Drew, arXiv:0805.1042 [Phys. Rev. Lett. (to be published)]]. We also observe a gaplike suppression of the conductivity in the superconducting state with a shoulderlike feature at omegaSC* approximately 300 cm(-1) and spectral shape which is consistent with an unconventional order parameter with 2Delta approximately omegaSC* approximately 37 meV.

Evidence for two separate energy gaps in underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors from broadband infrared ellipsometry

We present broadband infrared ellipsometry measurements of the c-axis conductivity of underdoped RBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-delta} (R=Y, Nd, and La) single crystals. Our data show that separate energy scales are underlying the redistributions of spectral weight due to the normal state pseudogap and the superconducting gap. Furthermore, they provide evidence that these gaps do not share the same electronic states and do not merge on the overdoped side. Accordingly, our data are suggestive of a two gap scenario with a pseudogap that is likely extrinsic with respect to superconductivity.

Charge dynamics of doped holes in high Tc cuprate superconductors: a clue from optical conductivity

The charge dynamics in weakly hole doped high temperature superconductors is studied in terms of the accurate numerical solution to a model of a single hole interacting with a quantum lattice in an antiferromagnetic background, and accurate far-infrared ellipsometry measurements. The experimentally observed two electronic bands in the infrared spectrum can be identified in terms of the interplay between the electron correlation and electron-phonon interaction resolving the long standing mystery of the midinfrared band.

Electronic liquid crystal state in the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.45

Electronic phases with symmetry properties matching those of conventional liquid crystals have recently been discovered in transport experiments on semiconductor heterostructures and metal oxides at millikelvin temperatures. We report the spontaneous onset of a one-dimensional, incommensurate modulation of the spin system in the high-transition-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.45 upon cooling below approximately 150 kelvin, whereas static magnetic order is absent above 2 kelvin. The evolution of this modulation with temperature and doping parallels that of the in-plane anisotropy of the resistivity, indicating an electronic nematic phase that is stable over a wide temperature range. The results suggest that soft spin fluctuations are a microscopic route toward electronic liquid crystals and that nematic order can coexist with high-temperature superconductivity in underdoped cuprates.

Optical study of the free-carrier response of LaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices

We used infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry to investigate the electronic properties of LaTiO_{3}/SrTiO_{3} superlattices (SLs). Our results indicated that, independent of the SL periodicity and individual layer thickness, the SLs exhibited a Drude metallic response with sheet carrier density per interface approximately 3x10;{14} cm;{-2}. This is probably due to the leakage of d electrons at interfaces from the Mott insulator LaTiO3 to the band insulator SrTiO3. We observed a carrier relaxation time approximately 35 fs and mobility approximately 35 cm;{2} V-1 s;{-1} at 10 K, and an unusual temperature dependence of carrier density that was attributed to the dielectric screening of quantum paraelectric SrTiO3.

Orbital ordering transition in Ca2RuO4 observed with resonant X-ray diffraction

Resonant x-ray diffraction performed at the L(II) and L(III) absorption edges of Ru has been used to investigate the magnetic and orbital ordering in Ca2RuO4 single crystals. A large resonant enhancement due to electric dipole 2p-->4d transitions is observed at the wave-vector characteristic of antiferromagnetic ordering. Besides the previously known antiferromagnetic phase transition at T(N)=110 K, an additional phase transition, between two paramagnetic phases, is observed around 260 K. Based on the polarization and azimuthal angle dependence of the diffraction signal, this transition can be attributed to orbital ordering of the Ru t(2g) electrons. The propagation vector of the orbital order is inconsistent with some theoretical predictions for the orbital state of Ca2RuO4.

Nickel impurity-induced enhancement of the pseudogap of cuprate high-T(c) superconductors

The influence of magnetic Ni and nonmagnetic Zn impurities on the normal-state pseudogap (PG) in the c-axis optical conductivity of (Sm,Nd)Ba(2){Cu(1-y)(Ni,Zn)(y)}(3)O(7-delta) crystals was studied by spectral ellipsometry. We find that these impurities, which strongly suppress superconductivity, have a profoundly different impact on the PG. Zn gives rise to a gradual and inhomogeneous PG suppression while Ni strongly enhances the PG. Our results challenge theories that relate the PG either to precursor superconductivity or to other phases with exotic order parameters, such as flux phase or d-density wave states, that should be suppressed by potential scattering. The apparent difference between magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities instead points towards an important role of magnetic correlations in the PG state.

Charge ordering and magnetopolarons in Na0.82CoO2

Using spectral ellipsometry, we measured the dielectric function of a Na(0.82(2))CoO2 crystal that exhibits bulk antiferromagnetism with T(N)=19.8 K. We identify two prominent transitions as a function of temperature. The first one at 280 K involves marked changes of the electronic and lattice responses that are indicative of charge ordering in the CoO2 layers. The second transition occurs around T(N)=19.8 K and reveals sizable spin-charge coupling. The data are discussed in terms of charge ordering and formation of magnetopolarons due to a charge-induced spin-state transition of adjacent Co3+ ions.

Oxygen superstructures throughout the phase diagram of (Y,Ca)Ba2Cu3O6+x

The doping dependence of short-range lattice superstructures in (Y,Ca)Ba2Cu3O6+x has been studied with high-energy x-ray scattering. We observe diffuse features with a well defined periodicity which depend on the oxygen concentration but not on the charge carrier concentration. In addition, we find that diffuse scattering is absent in underdoped YBa2Cu4O8, which does not sustain oxygen defects. Our combined data highlight that the diffuse scattering arises from short-range oxygen ordering and associated lattice distortions. Signatures of stripe ordering or fluctuations are not seen and therefore must be much weaker.

Spin-controlled Mott-Hubbard bands in LaMnO3 probed by optical ellipsometry

Spectral ellipsometry is used to determine the dielectric function of an untwinned crystal of LaMnO3 in the range 0.5-5.6 eV at temperatures 50<or=T<or=300 K. A pronounced redistribution of spectral weight is found at the Ne el temperature T(N)=140 K. The anisotropy of the spectral weight transfer matches the magnetic ordering pattern. A superexchange model quantitatively describes spectral weight transfer induced by spin correlations. This analysis implies that the lowest-energy transitions around 2 eV are intersite d-d transitions, and that LaMnO3 is a Mott-Hubbard insulator.

Two-dimensional geometry of spin excitations in the high-transition-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x

The fundamental building block of the copper oxide superconductors is a Cu4O4 square plaquette. The plaquettes in most of these materials are slightly distorted to form a rectangular lattice, for which an influential theory predicts that high-transition-temperature (high-T(c)) superconductivity is nucleated in 'stripes' aligned along one of the axes. This theory received strong support from experiments that indicated a one-dimensional character for the magnetic excitations in the high-T(c) material YBa2Cu3O6.6 (ref. 4). Here we report neutron scattering data on 'untwinned' YBa2Cu3O6+x crystals, in which the orientation of the rectangular lattice is maintained throughout the entire volume. Contrary to the earlier claim, we demonstrate that the geometry of the magnetic fluctuations is two-dimensional. Rigid stripe arrays therefore appear to be ruled out over a wide range of doping levels in YBa2Cu3O6+x, but the data may be consistent with liquid-crystalline stripe order. The debate about stripes has therefore been reopened.

In-Plane Spectral Weight Shift of Charge Carriers in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6.9

The temperature-dependent redistribution of the spectral weight of the CuO2 plane-derived conduction band of the YBa2Cu3O6.9 high-temperature superconductor (superconducting transition temperature = 92.7 kelvin) was studied with wide-band (0.01- to 5.6-electron volt) spectroscopic ellipsometry. A superconductivity-induced transfer of the spectral weight involving a high-energy scale in excess of 1 electron volt was observed. Correspondingly, the charge carrier spectral weight was shown to decrease in the superconducting state. The ellipsometric data also provide detailed information about the evolution of the optical self-energy in the normal and superconducting states.

Intrinsic Josephson effects in the magnetic superconductor RuSr2GdCu2O8

We have measured interlayer current transport in small-sized RuSr2GdCu2O8 single crystals. We find a clear intrinsic Josephson effect showing that the material acts as a natural superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-insulator-superconductor superlattice. Thus far, we detected no unconventional behavior due to the magnetism of the RuO2 layers.

Magnetism, charge order, and giant magnetoresistance in SrFeO(3-delta) single crystals

The electronic and magnetic properties of SrFeO(3-delta) single crystals with controlled oxygen content (0< or =delta< or =0.19) have been studied systematically by susceptibility, transport, and spectroscopic techniques. An intimate correlation between the spin-charge ordering and the electronic transport behavior is found. Giant negative as well as positive magnetoresistance are observed.

Two resonant magnetic modes in an overdoped high T(c) superconductor

A detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the overdoped high temperature copper oxide superconductor Y(0.9)Ca(0.1)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(7) reveals two-distinct magnetic resonant modes in the superconducting state. The modes differ in their symmetry with respect to exchange between adjacent copper oxide layers. Counterparts of the mode with odd symmetry, but not the one with even symmetry, had been observed before at lower doping levels. The observation of the even mode resolves a long-standing puzzle, and the spectral weight ratio of both modes yields an estimate of the onset of particle-hole spin-flip excitations.
