Abstract
The majority of intracranial expansive lesions are tumors. However, a wide range of lesions can mimic neoplastic pathology. Differentiating pseudotumoral lesions from brain tumors is crucial to patient management. This article describes the most common intracranial pseudotumors, with a focus on the imaging features that serve as clues to detect pseudotumors.

Abstract
Inactivation of cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) and/or cyclins in mice has changed our view of cell cycle regulation. In general, cells are far more resistant to the loss of Cdks than originally anticipated, suggesting widespread compensation among the Cdks. Early embryonic cells are, so far, not sensitive to the lack of multiple Cdks or cyclins. In contrast, differentiated cells are more dependent on Cdk/cyclin complexes and the functional redundancy is more limited. Our challenge is to better understand these cell-type specific differences in cell cycle regulation that can be used to design efficient cancer therapy. Indeed, tumor cells seem to respond to inhibition of Cdk activities, however, with different outcome depending on the tumor cell type. Tumor cells share some proliferation features with stem cells, but appear more sensitive to loss of Cdk activity, somewhat resembling differentiated cells. We summarize the current knowledge of cell cycle regulation in different cell types and highlight their sensitivity to the lack of Cdk activities.

Abstract
The Btg family of anti-proliferative gene products includes Pc 3/Tis 21/Btg 2, Btg 1, Tob, Tob2, Ana/Btg3, Pc3k and others. These proteins are characterized by similarities in their amino-terminal region: the Btg1 homology domain. However, the pleiotropic nature of these family proteins has been observed and no common physiological function among family members was suggested from the history of their identification. Recent progress in the search for Btg family functions has come from the analysis of cell regulation and of cell differentiation. It is now emerging that every member of this family has a potential to regulate cell growth. We would like to propose here to use a nomenclature APRO as a new term for the family.

Abstract
We have previously shown that BTG1 stimulates myoblast differentiation. In addition, this protein displays a major nuclear localization in confluent myoblasts, decreasing during the early steps of differentiation, and is essentially detected in the cytoplasm of mature myotubes. To identify the domains involved in the cellular trafficking of BTG1, we observed the localization of several BTG1 sequences fused to betaGalactosidase. The highly conserved B box among all members of the BTG family induces a significant nuclear localization of the betaGal moiety, enhanced by presence of the BTG1 carboxy-terminal sequence. In addition, a functional Nuclear Export Signal (NES) overlaps the B box. Moreover, presence of the first 43 NH(2)-terminal amino acids reduced the nuclear localization of each chimeric protein tested. Last, the BTG1 amino-terminal domain bears an LxxLL motif favouring nuclear accumulation, and another region encompassing the A box inhibiting nuclear localization. In contrast to a BTG1 mutant exclusively localized in the cytoplasm, transient expression of a mutant displaying a nuclear localization enhanced myoblasts withdrawal from the cell cycle and terminal differentiation, thus mimicking the myogenic influence of BTG1. In conclusion, several regions of BTG1 are implicated in its cellular localization, and BTG1 myogenic activity is induced at the nuclear level.

Abstract
Both BTG1 and BTG2 are involved in cell-growth control. BTG2 expression is regulated by p53, and its inactivation in embryonic stem cells leads to the disruption of DNA damage-induced G2/M cell-cycle arrest. In order to investigate the mechanism underlying Btg-mediated functions, we looked for possible functional partners of Btg1 and Btg2. Using yeast two-hybrid screening, protein-binding assays, and transient transfection assays in HeLa cells, we demonstrated the physical in vitro and in vivo interaction of both Btg1 and Btg2 with the mouse protein mCaf1 (i.e. mouse CCR4-associated factor 1). mCaf1 was identified through its interaction with the CCR4 protein, a component of a general transcription multisubunit complex, which, in yeast, regulates the expression of different genes involved in cell-cycle regulation and progression. These data suggest that Btg proteins, through their association with mCaf1, may participate, either directly or indirectly, in the transcriptional regulation of the genes involved in the control of the cell cycle. Finally, we found that box B, one of two conserved domains which define the Btg family, plays a functional role, namely that it is essential to the Btg-mCaf1 interaction.

Abstract
It is well known that loss of tumor suppressor genes and more generally of antiproliferative genes plays a key role in the development of most tumors. We report here the cloning of the mouse BTG3 gene and show that its human counterpart maps on chromosome 21. This evolutionarily conserved gene codes for a 30 kDa protein and is expressed in most adult murine and human tissues analyzed. However, we demonstrate that its expression is cell cycle dependent and peaks at the end of the G1 phase. This gene is homologous to the human BTG1, BTG2 and TOB genes which were demonstrated to act as inhibitors of cell proliferation. Its description allowed us to define better this seven gene family (the BTG gene family) at the structural level and to speculate about its physiological role in normal and tumoral cells. This family is mainly characterized by the presence of two conserved domains (BTG boxes A and B) of as yet undetermined function which are separated by a non-conserved 20-25 amino acid sequence.

Abstract
Cell cycle regulation is critical for maintenance of genome integrity. A prominent factor that guarantees genomic stability of cells is p53 (ref. 1). The P53 gene encodes a transcription factor that has a role as a tumour suppressor. Identification of p53-target genes should provide greater insight into the molecular mechanisms that mediate the tumour suppressor activities of p53. The rodent Pc3/Tis21 gene was initially described as an immediate early gene induced by tumour promoters and growth factors in PC12 and Swiss 3T3 cells. It is expressed in a variety of cell and tissue types and encodes a remarkably labile protein. Pc3/Tis21 has a strong sequence similarity to the human antiproliferative BTG1 gene cloned from a chromosomal translocation of a B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. This similarity led us to speculate that BTG1 and the putative human homologue of Pc3/Tis21 (named BTG2) were members of a new family of genes involved in growth control and/or differentiation. This hypothesis was recently strengthened by the identification of a new antiproliferative protein, named TOB, which shares sequence similarity with BTG1 and PC3/TIS21 (ref. 7). Here, we cloned and localized the human BTG2 gene. We show that BTG2 expression is induced through a p53-dependent mechanism and that BTG2 function may be relevant to cell cycle control and cellular response to DNA damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the viability of arrested pig hearts harvested after animal death. METHODS Hearts (n = 25) were preserved for 2 hours by cold storage (4 degrees C) with St. Thomas' cardioplegic solution no warm ischemia (0 minutes; control) or 10, 20, 30, or 60 minutes of in situ warm ischemia (animal exsanguination). Hearts were then reperfused for 1 hour with whole blood with an in vitro functional testing system. Left ventricular developed pressure and coronary flow were measured during reperfusion. Energetic compound measurements and histologic analysis were performed on tissue biopsy specimens. RESULTS After 10- and 20-minute warm ischemia, hearts showed a significant decrease in energetic compounds, a 51% and 73% decreases of left ventricular developed pressure, and 38% and 65% decreases in coronary flow, respectively. After 30 minutes hearts showed irreversible ischemic injury with ultrastructural tissue damage, a large decrease in energetic adenine nucleotide compounds, and an inability to beat more than 15 minutes after reperfusion. CONCLUSION We conclude that in contrast with other species, pig hearts harvested 10 minutes or more after animal exsanguination fail to be successfully reanimated.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to modelize the evolution of "ideal" weight gain during pregnancy and to generate automatically the appropriate diet. This computerized model has been developed on a microcomputer and has two units: the first unit calculates the "ideal" weight gain during pregnancy, based on the curves of Rosso which show that weight gain is not linear with term and depends of the prepregnancy weight. The second unit calculates the appropriate diet which is depending for the first visit on height, prepregnancy weight and weight gain and for the followed visits on weight gain and the diet situation of the previous visit. The next step will be the medical evaluation of this computer-aided modelization of weight gain during pregnancy.

Abstract
A complex formed between the dimeric aspartyl-tRNA synthetase from yeast (Mr congruent to 125,000) and two molecules of its cognate yeast tRNAAsp (Mr = 24,160) was crystallized using ammonium sulfate as the precipitant. The crucial parameter which governs a successful crystallization is the enzyme tRNA stoichiometry. Crystals are only obtained when the starting solution precisely contains two tRNA molecules for one enzyme molecule. It was demonstrated by electrophoresis, biological activity assays, and crystallographic data that the crystals contain the two components in the same two to one stoichiometric ratio. The crystals, of cubic shape with edges up to 0.8 mm, belong to space group 1432. The cell parameter is 354 A and the asymmetric unit contains one particle of complex. The solvent content is about 78%, higher than the values commonly observed. Although particularly soft, the quality of the crystals is suitable for x-ray diffraction studies up to 7-A resolution.

Abstract
X-ray diffraction studies were made on lecithin/cholesterol multilayers with very high water content and containing the local anaesthetic procaine. Narrow-angle diffraction experiments show that the procaine molecules are located with the uncharged aromatic amine group approx. 10 A from the centre of the bilayer. The polar tertiary amine group of these molecules is almost certainly located in the polar head-group region of the membrane. Wide-angle diffraction experiments show that the incorporation of procaine molecules into such lipid membranes produces an approx. 30% increase in the spread of acyl chain separation, although the average spacing between the chains is slightly reduced.

Abstract
A longitudinal investigation was conducted simultaneously in Normandy and in the West-Paris region. Based on more than 2000 subjects in Normandy and 1500 in the Paris (St. Lazare) area, the frequency of a bronchial syndrome was established as 21 and 26% respectively; obstructive respiratory failure, 4 and 2% respectively; and restrictive respiratory failure, 1%. The typical elements of risk (tobacco, age, socio-professional sphere) reappear in this study. Alcoholism also seems to be a contributing factor. In a longitudinal investigation, the study of new cases which are in progress will help to identify the onset of the disease and its facilitating circumstances. In the future, the study of the flow-volume curve should be included in epidemiological investigations.
