Abstract
The sustainability of amide bond formation is an ever-present topic in the pharmaceutical industry, as it represents the common motif in many clinically approved drugs. Despite many procedures for accomplishing eco-friendly amide synthesis having been developed, this transformation still remains a contemporary challenge. Herein, we report a greener approach for amide synthesis by using Reactive Deep Eutectic Solvents (RDESs) acting as both the reaction medium and reactants. The procedure not only avoids the use of hazardous solvents but also provides operationally simple product recovery with high purity and efficiency, without chromatographic purification. This approach was efficiently applied to the synthesis of a key intermediate in the production of an active pharmaceutical ingredient like atenolol. The green metrics of the gram-scale procedure were compared to the conventional industrial strategy showing an advancement in the greening of amide synthesis.

Abstract
In this work, the possibility of using carbon nanotubes for the treatment of olive vegetation waters (OVWs) was investigated. In general, the disposal of OVWs represents an important environmental problem. The possibility of considering these waters no longer just as a problem but as a source of noble substances, thanks to the recovery of biophenols from them, was tested. In particular, predetermined quantities of olive vegetation waters were treated with carbon nanotubes. The quantities of adsorbed biophenols were studied as a function of the quantities of carbon nanotubes used and the contact time. The experimental conditions for obtaining both the highest possible quantities of biophenol and a purer adsorbate with the highest percentage of biophenols were studied. After the adsorption tests, the vegetation waters were analyzed by UV spectrophotometry to determine, in particular, the variation in the concentration of biophenols. The carbon nanotubes were weighed before and after each adsorption test. In addition, kinetic studies of the adsorption processes were considered. Carbon nanotubes proved their effectiveness in recovering biophenols.

Abstract
Owing to a growing awareness toward environmental impact, the use of safer and eco-friendly solvents like deep eutectic solvents (DESs), has recently undergone important growth in the pharmaceutical field, with regard to their application as non-aqueous liquid administration vehicles, since they do not carry the same risks of toxicity and handling as traditional organic solvents. Major attention has been given to the development of advantageous transdermal drug delivery systems, because of their ease of use and better acceptability. Here, we report the use of two different DESs, based on choline chloride, used as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), and ascorbic acid or propylene glycol, used as hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), able to enhance the solubility and the topical delivery of dapsone, representing a class IV drug. The interactions between the DESs’ components and the drug were studied by performing DSC, FT-IR, and NMR analysis of the eutectic systems and the pure drug, confirming the establishment of H-bonds between the drug and the DESs’ components. Diffusion and permeability studies, carried out in a Franz cell, showed an increase in permeability, highlighting the great potential of DESs as dissolution and permeation enhancers in the development of novel and more effective drug delivery systems in topical administration.

Abstract
The formation of the amide bond is among the most commonly performed transformations in the pharmaceutical industry and the wider chemical industry. The current methods for its installation in organic compounds frequently rely on the use of large amounts of organic solvents, mainly N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), and dichloromethane (DCM), which have been associated with adverse environmental and health concerns over the last decades. This fact led academia and industry to make significant efforts toward the development of synthetic routes with the aim to avoid, reduce or replace the use of hazardous solvents. The present review fits into this framework and discusses the literature existing over the past ten years on strategies for reducing and replacing hazardous solvents, focusing on the use of biobased and neoteric solvents, such as ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents (ILs and DESs, respectively), and on the reaction media that proved to be greener alternatives for amide bond formation.

Abstract
An analytical strategy for a matrix-assisted laser desorption mass spectrometry-based untargeted metabolomic study on vitreous humor (VH) was developed, looking for statistically significant parameters correlated to death time estimation. Five incubation stages of VH, 0, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h, at physiological pH and controlled temperature, were adopted to monitor time-dependent changes and correlate them with the postmortem interval (PMI). Using two multivariate statistical approaches, principal component regression (PCR) and partial least squares regression (PLSR), the PMI was assessed, considering the m/z values from mass spectra and the incubation time (ISt) as predictors. An independent validation set was used to evaluate the predictive capability of the models through the coefficient of determination (R2) and the root-mean-square error (RMSE). Different pre-treatments were applied to the raw mass spectra, and their performance in assessing PMI was evaluated. Based on the best outcomes in terms of both R2 and RMSE, multiplicative scatter correction combined with a logarithmic transformation was chosen. The results of PCR and PLSR based on the selected pre-treatment are encouraging because validation R2 is about 0.95 for both models. Moreover, the prediction error is 6 h for both models, when PMI is lower than 1 day. Although these results are obtained by the uncritical application of the models, they are comparable to or even better than those reported in the literature. Notwithstanding, we consider that many in situ influences, such as passive diffusion, functional loss of tissues, and advanced autolytic processes, could not get captured in vitro. However, the developed approach was optimized using VH samples and overcomes the limitations of the vast majority of methods that require validation for serum and/or urine samples.

Abstract
Four different types of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used and compared for the treatment of benzoic acid contaminated water. The types of nanotubes used were: (1) non-purified (CNTsUP), as made; (2) purified (CNTsP), not containing the catalyst; (3) oxidized (CNTsOX), characterized by the presence of groups such as, –COOH; (4) calcined (CNTs900), with elimination of interactions between nanotubes. In addition, activated carbon was also used to allow for later comparison. The adsorption tests were conducted on an aqueous solution of benzoic acid at concentration of 20 mg/L, as a model of carboxylated aromatic compounds. After the adsorption tests, the residual benzoic acid concentrations were measured by UV-visible spectrometry, while the carbon nanotubes were characterized by TG and DTA thermal analyses and electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the type of nanotubes thermally treated at 900 °C has the best performances in terms of adsorption rate and amounts of collected acid, even if compared with the performance of activated carbons.

Abstract
Citrus aurantium is a widespread tree in the Mediterranean area, and it is mainly used as rootstock for other citrus. In the present study, a vacuum infiltration centrifugation procedure, followed by solid phase extraction matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization tandem mass spectrometry (SPE MALDI MS/MS) analysis, was adopted to isolate proteins from leaves. The results of mass spectrometry (MS) profiling, combined with the top-down proteomics approach, allowed the identification of 78 proteins. The bioinformatic databases TargetP, SignalP, ChloroP, WallProtDB, and mGOASVM-Loc were used to predict the subcellular localization of the identified proteins. Among 78 identified proteins, 20 were targeted as secretory pathway proteins and 36 were predicted to be in cellular compartments including cytoplasm, nucleus, and cell membrane. The largest subcellular fraction was the secretory pathway, accounting for 25% of total proteins. Gene Ontology (GO) of Citrus sinensis was used to simplify the functional annotation of the proteins that were identified in the leaves. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) showed the enrichment of metabolic pathways including glutathione metabolism and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, suggesting that the response to a range of environmental factors is the key processes in citrus leaves. Finally, the Lipase GDSL domain-containing protein GDSL esterase/lipase, which is involved in plant development and defense response, was for the first time identified and characterized in Citrus aurantium.

Abstract
A synthetic strategy for the preparation of two orthogonally protected methyl esters of the non-proteinogenic amino acid 2,3-l-diaminopropanoic acid (l-Dap) was developed. In these structures, the base-labile protecting group 9-fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl (Fmoc) was paired to the p-toluensulfonyl (tosyl, Ts) or acid-labile tert-butyloxycarbonyl (Boc) moieties. The synthetic approach to protected l-Dap methyl esters uses appropriately masked 2,3-diaminopropanols, which are obtained via reductive amination of an aldehyde prepared from the commercial amino acid Nα-Fmoc-O-tert-butyl-d-serine, used as the starting material. Reductive amination is carried out with primary amines and sulfonamides, and the process is assisted by the Lewis acid Ti(OiPr)4. The required carboxyl group is installed by oxidizing the alcoholic function of 2,3-diaminopropanols bearing the tosyl or benzyl protecting group on the 3-NH2 site. The procedure can easily be applied using the crude product obtained after each step, minimizing the need for chromatographic purifications. Chirality of the carbon atom of the starting d-serine template is preserved throughout all synthetic steps.

Abstract
The carbon–carbon double bond of arylidene acetones and chalcones can be selectively reduced with benzeneselenol generated in situ by reacting O-(tert-butyl) Se-phenyl selenocarbonate with hydrochloric acid in ethanol. This mild, metal-free and experimentally simple reduction procedure displays considerable functional-group compatibility, products are obtained in good to excellent yields, and the use of toxic Se/CO mixture and NaSeH, or the smelly and air-sensitive benzeneselenol, is avoided. Abstract
This article displays an efficient and cost effective technique for the removal of unleaded gasoline from water. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as the sorbent material. Nanotubes were synthesized according to a well-known procedure and successfully used avoiding cumbersome purifications from traces of catalyst. A series of lab-scale experiments was performed on dispersions of commercial unleaded gasoline (20 mL) in water (30 mL), which were subjected to the action of variable amounts of MWCNTs at room temperature. Physicochemical characteristics and sorbent capacity of nanotubes were investigated by thermal analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy. The highest percentage of removed unleaded gasoline was obtained using small amounts (0.7 g) of MWCNTs, over very short stirring times (5 min). The composition of residual organic materials in water was investigated by 1H and 13C high-resolution NMR spectroscopy, which confirmed the almost complete removal of unleaded gasoline hydrocarbon components from polluted waters.

Abstract
Herein we describe a rapid, simple, and reliable method for the quantitative analysis and molecular species fingerprinting of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) by direct MS and MS/MS analysis. Experimentally, powdered saffron was subjected to a brief treatment with a 0.3% TFA water/acetonitrile solution, and the resulting mixture was directly placed on the MALDI plate for analysis. This approach allowed the detection of the commonly observed crocins C-1-C-6 and flavonols, together with the identification of the unknown highly glycosylated crocins C-7, C-8 and C-9, and carotenoid-derived metabolites. The strategy endorsed the simultaneous detection and characterization of saffron and adulterant markers using crude extracts of the adulterant itself and synthetic sets of adulterated authentic saffron samples. The implementation of the strategy was to measure the amount of an unknown adulterant from the crude extract using curcumin as a non-isotopic isobaric internal standard. The relationship between the saffron and curcumin molar ratios were established with a correlation coefficient of 0.9942. The ANOVA regression model was significant, F(1, 72) = 13 595.82, p < 0.001, y = (0.0116 ± 0.0001)x + (-0.1214 ± 0.0086). No matrix effects were observed and good results were obtained with respect to instrumental repeatability (*RSD% < 2%) and LOD (1.1%). The analysis of commercial samples of saffron using the proposed approach showed the suitability of the method for routine analysis (minimal sample preparation and very short measuring time per sample).

Abstract
Respiratory diseases represent a major healthcare burden worldwide. Lung transplantation (LTx) is the "gold standard" for end-stage patients, strongly limited by shortage of available/suitable donor lungs. Normothermic ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) has significantly increased the number of lungs suitable for transplantation. Steen solution is used for EVLP, but the mechanisms involved in its beneficial properties remain to be clarified. We investigated the effects of Steen solution in an in vitro protocol of cold starvation and normothermic recovery on human lung spheroids, named pneumospheres (PSs), containing epithelial/basal cells, and on endothelial human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Steen solution significantly preserved the viability of PSs, reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) release by PSs and HUVECs, decreased NADPH-oxidase (NOX) activity in PSs, and reduced inflammatory cytokines expression levels in HUVECs. Steen solution was able to specifically reduce NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2) isoform activation, particularly in PSs, as detected by soluble-NOX2 peptide and p47-phosphorylation. Interestingly, a specific NOX2 inhibitor could partly mimic the pro-survival effect of Steen on PSs. We provide the first evidence that Steen solution can preserve lung epithelial/progenitor cells viability partially through NOX2 downregulation, and exert antioxidant effects on parenchymal cells, with consequent ROS reduction. These results suggest that NOX2 inhibition might be an additional strategy to reduce cellular damage during LTx procedures.

Abstract
A mild, practical, and simple procedure for phenyl selenoesters synthesis from several anhydrides and diphenyl diselenide was developed. This transition-metal-free method provides a straightforward entry to storable Fmoc-amino acid selenoesters which are effective chemoselective acylating reagents. An application to oligopeptide synthesis was illustrated.

Abstract
Fish parvalbumin (PRVB) is an abundant and stable protein in fish meat. The variation in cross-reactivity among individuals is well known and explained by a broad repertoire of molecular forms and differences between IgE-binding epitopes in fish species. PVRB has "sequential" epitopes, which retain their IgE-binding capacity and allergenicity also after heating and digestion using proteolytic enzymes. From the allergonomics perspective, PRVB is still a challenging target due to its multiple isoforms present at different degrees of distribution. Little information is available in the databases about PVRBs from Oncorhynchus mykiss. At present, only two validated, incomplete isoforms of this species are included in the protein databases: parvalbumin beta 1 (P86431) and parvalbumin beta 2 (P86432). A simple and rapid protocol has been developed for selective solubilization of PRVB from the muscle of farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), followed by calcium depletion, proteolytic digestion, MALDI MS, and MS/MS analysis. With this strategy thermal allergen release was assessed and PRVB1 (P86431), PRVB1.1, PRVB2 (P86432) and PRVB2.1 variants from the rainbow trout were sequenced. The correct ordering of peptide sequences was aided by mapping the overlapping enzymatic digests. The deduced peptide sequences were arranged and the theoretical molecular masses (Mr) of the resulting sequences were calculated. Experimental masses (Mr) of each PRVB variant were measured by linear MALDI-TOF.

Abstract
The present investigation reports a study about the evolution, during ripening, of the fatty acid profile and the
fatty acid composition in acylglycerols of three different fermented sausages industrially produced in the Calabria region
(Southern Italy). Statistical analysis (ANOVA) was applied to the results obtained for the profiles to check all the
differences between samples. The study comprised also an evaluation of the lipid oxidation level. All kind of sausages
showed a free fatty acids profile in which the monounsaturated fatty acids were predominant, followed by saturated and
polyunsaturated fatty acids. In acylglycerols, a low content in linoleic acid (approximately 2% of total methyl esters) was
displayed, while that found in the free fatty acids profile was higher (approximately 17% of total FFAs). In addition, the
generation of aldehydes through secondary lipid oxidation was clearly confirmed after long ripening period by classical
qualitative colorimetric method supported by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The differences in fatty acids profiles observed in
the free fatty acids and the acylglycerol fractions were certainly due to the high selectivity of lypase activity during the
ripening.

Abstract
We present a simple methodology for the simultaneous identification and determination of biogenic amines in food matrices, based on the use of a stable isotope-coded derivatization and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The tagging reagent is N-hydroxysuccinimidyl ester of d(0)/d(4) -4-methoxybenzoic acid (d(0)/d(4) -4-MBA-OSu) which mainly functionalizes primary amines. The identification and structural characterization of tagged biogenic amines were exploited by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry (MS) and MS/MS. Multiple-reaction monitoring has been applied in the assay of biogenic amines in different foodstuffs, providing a method whose reliability is confirmed by the values of accuracy (12%) and by the calculated analytical parameters.

Abstract
A new class of molecules with a triptycene rigid core surrounded by six monosaccharide residues was synthesized. Hexakis(bromomethyl) substituted triptycene was converted into a six-armed triptycene azide (2,3,6,7,14,15-hexakis(azidomethyl)-9,10-dihydro-9,10-[1’,2’]benzenoanthracene). The key step of the synthesis was the cycloaddition of the azide to 2-propyn-1-yl β-D-gluco- or galactopyranosides. All products were isolated in good yields and were fully characterized.

Abstract
In meat products the contents of free amino acids and free fatty acids are two important parameters used to establish their quality. These compounds play a very important role in defining the sensorial characteristics and acceptability of meat products. An innovative procedure for the measurement of free amino acid and fatty acid contents in meat and meat derivatives was developed. A single experiment can be performed in order to determine simultaneously the free amino acid and free fatty acid profiles. The analytes of interest are rapidly extracted from the meat matrix and derivatized by using methyl chloroformate. This reagent allows the transformation of the two groups of analytes into the corresponding N-methyloxycarbonyl amino acid methyl esters and fatty acid methyl esters that can easily be extracted and sampled for their further identification and quantitation. The measurement of the obtained amino acid and fatty acid derivatives is performed by GC/MS analysis and their concentrations are calculated by using two appropriate internal standards. The main advantage of the proposed protocol is the determination at the same time of two important classes of analytes that are of great importance in food analysis and characterization. Moreover, minimal sample manipulation and preparation, and reduced total extraction times are required to obtain the response with respect to conventional procedures, in which instead the analysis of both the two classes of compounds must be performed separately. The helpfulness of the protocol was tested in the analysis of a cured meat product that is typical of the South of Italy. The optimized protocol successfully allowed the determination of thirteen free amino acids and six free fatty acids, namely those most abundant in the lipid content of the cured meat product under evaluation.

Abstract
Carcinoma progression is associated with the loss of epithelial features, and the acquisition of a mesenchymal phenotype by tumour cells. Herein we show that exposure of MCF-7 cells to epidermal growth factor (EGF) resulted in morphological alterations characteristic of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). EGF treatment resulted in increased motility along with an up-regulation of transcription factors Slug, Zeb1, Zeb2, and mesenchymal markers Vimentin and N-cadherin. Treatment of MCF-7 cells with a combined stimulation of EGF and resveratrol, a naturally occurring stilbene with antitumor properties, failed to alter cell morphology, motility and overexpression of EMT markers induced by EGF. Using specific chemical inhibitors, we demonstrated that EGF-induced EMT is mediated by extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK 1/2) signalling pathway and that resveratrol is able to repress EGF-induced ERK activation. In summary, these data provide new evidence of the inhibitory effect of resveratrol on EGF-induced EMT cell transformation.

Abstract
The acid-catalyzed dehydration is one of the most important processes, which transforms 3-hydroxy steroids into their corresponding unsaturated derivatives. This reaction is of great importance because it can produce molecules that play a key role in the understanding of the natural metabolism of steroids. Sterol dehydration is generally performed with aqueous acidic systems, and the treatment often affords low yields of the desired compounds and/or complex mixtures of by-products. In this paper, we report the results obtained from the study of the structural and stereochemical effects of the acid-induced reaction of pregn-4-en-3β,17α,20β-triol in anhydrous systems. In particular, the treatment of this trihydroxy steroid model with Lewis acids leads to the corresponding Δ(3,5) -steradiene as the only product and in very high yields. With Lewis acids, no modifications of the 1,2-diol function on the D-ring are observed, even when the reactions are performed at high temperatures. Protic acid catalysis in non-aqueous organic solvents causes the formation of an epimeric mixture of the corresponding Δ(3,5) -steradiene derivatives by a partial stereochemical inversion of the asymmetric C-17. The reactivity of the 17α,20β-diolic residue is also evaluated by exposing pregn-4-en-3β,17α,20β-triol and the corresponding Δ(3,5) -steradiene to the prolonged action of anhydrous protic acid systems under thermal conditions.

Abstract
The vacuum distillation of bergamot peels furnishes a high-quality essential oil that is totally bergapten-free. This oil was compared with that produced by distillation of cold-pressed oils and those commercially available. The oil obtained by vacuum distillation of the bergamot vegetable matrix shows a composition quite similar to that of the cold-pressed oil. It also displays qualitative characteristics that are superior with respect to those normally observed for essential oils isolated by distillation of cold-pressed oils. Oils isolated by the method presented here can constitute ideal candidates in producing foods, for example, Earl Grey tea, and cosmetic preparations.
