Healthcare-associated carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infections are associated with higher mortality compared to carbapenem-susceptible K. pneumoniae infections in the intensive care unit: a retrospective cohort study. J Hosp Infect 2024; 148:30-38. [PMID: 38513959 DOI: 10.1016/j.jhin.2024.03.003] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/03/2024] [Revised: 03/06/2024] [Accepted: 03/11/2024] [Indexed: 03/23/2024]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) is an opportunistic pathogen causing severe pneumonia and sepsis. Carbapenem-resistant KP (CRKP) has become a major pathogen in many centres. AIM To investigate the association between carbapenem resistance and the mortality rate, length of stay, and hospital cost in patients with Klebsiella pneumoniae infection. METHODS The retrospective cohort study was conducted in the intensive care units of a large teaching tertiary hospital in southwest China between January 1st, 2020 and December 31st, 2022. To examine the impact of carbapenem resistance on mortality rates and economic burden, multivariate Cox regression and generalized linear models were constructed. FINDINGS The study included 282 adult patients with KP infection (135 CSKP; 147 CRKP). CRKP-infected patients demonstrated higher mortality risk (unadjusted hazard ratio (aHR): 1.980; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.206-3.248; P = 0.007; aHR: 1.767; 95% CI: 1.038-3.005; P = 0.036) compared to CSKP-infected patients. Stratified analysis, according to type of KP infection, revealed that patients with healthcare-associated CRKP infection had a significantly higher mortality risk compared to those with CSKP infection (log-rank P = 0.015). Patients with CRKP infection had longer hospital stays than those infected with CSKP (adjusted mean: 38.74 vs 29.71 days; P = 0.003), and hospital-related expenses were notably higher among CRKP patients than CSKP patients (adjusted cost: £40,126.73 vs 25,713.74; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION CRKP infections increase mortality rates, prolong hospital stays, and raise healthcare costs. Healthcare facilities should adopt targeted strategies, including curtailing pre-infection hospitalization periods and managing medications more judiciously.

Abstract
Objective: To construct zebrafish models for the screening of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) associated genes. Methods: ICH zebrafish models were constructed through morpholino oligonucleotides (MOs) technique and microinjection technique, and multiple verification was performed from macro and micro perspectives. First, the normal wild-type AB strain zebrafish injected with control MO was used as the control group, and AB zebrafish embryos microinjected with MOs of genes related to development of neural crest-derived cells (NCDCs) were used as the study group, such as col8a1 MO, tfap2α MO, msx1a MO, msx2 MO, and dkk1a MO. Preliminary verification of the model was conducted under a white-light optical microscope. Then, the model was verified by Tg (flk1: gfp; gata1: dsRed) double transgenic zebrafish, with vascular endothelial cells labeled by green fluorescent protein (GFP) and red blood cell labeled by fluorescent protein (dsRed), and thus the location of cerebral hemorrhage can be observed more clearly. Specifically, zebrafish embryos were microinjected with Control MO as the control group and those microinjected with col8a1 MO as the study group. Then the embryos were cultured until 48 hours post-fertilization to observe the leakage of red blood cells under the confocal laser scanning microscope. Finally, Tg (flk1: gfp) transgenic zebrafish was used to verify the model based on the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Through the leakage of dextran-rhodamine and DAPI dyes, the destruction of BBB and the occurrence of cerebral hemorrhage in zebrafish were further clarified, and quantitative statistics were carried out to verify the relationship between NCDCs development related genes and cerebral hemorrhage phenotype, which proved that the modeling was effective. Results: The zebrafish with col8a1, tfap2α, and msx1 mutations in the study group had apparent ICH compared with wildtype zebrafish, and the prevalence of ICH was 18.18% (52/286), 23.04% (62/251), and 35.94% (23/64), respectively. While, the zebrafish with msx2 and dkk1a mutations rarely had ICH, with the ICH prevalence of 1.03% (1/97) and 1.15% (1/87), respectively. The prevalence of red blood cells leakage in Tg (flk1:gfp; gata1:dsred) double transgenic zebrafish injected with Control Mo and col8a1 Mo was 0.37% (1/273) and 18.18% (52/286) (P<0.001). The number of DAPI positive nuclei of Tg (flk1: gfp) transgenic zebrafish injected with Control Mo and col8a1 Mo was 10.05±5.27 and 60.35±3.96 (P<0.001), and the fluorescent intensity of midbrain parenchymal induced by dextran-rhodamin leakage was 2.54±4.70 and 5.13±3.52 (P<0.001). Conclusion: This study successfully constructs the ICH zebrafish models, and ICH-related genes are screened out, such as col8a1, tfap2α, msx1, and so on.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effect of D-dimer on the prognosis of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Methods: A total of 1 658 patients who were first diagnosed with aSAH in West China Hospital of Sichuan University from December 2013 to June 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients were divided into four groups according to the median and quartiles of D-dimer level, including 415 cases, 414 cases, 414 cases, and 415 cases in groups Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively. Groups Q2, Q3, Q4, and group Q1 were matched by propensity score matching (PSM), and the correlation between D-dimer and each outcome was analyzed by logistic regression. Since there is no general clinical classification standard for D-dimer, this study attempted to reclassify patients into groups q1 (<0.55 mg/L, 94 cases), q2 (0.55-1.65 mg/L, 435 cases), q3 (1.65-5.50 mg/L, 650 cases) and q4 (>5.50 mg/L, 303 cases) based on 1, 3, 5, 10 times of the upper limit of the current clinical reference value. Results: The age of 1 658 aSAH patients were (57±12) years, including 1 068 males and 590 females. After PSM based on the median and quartiles of D-dimer level, there were 318 cases, 318 cases, 251 cases, and 229 cases in groups Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively. Compared with group Q1 (<1.23 mg/L), the risk of in-hospital infection (OR=2.14, 95%CI: 1.47-3.11, P<0.001), pneumonia (OR=2.22, 95%CI: 1.51-3.28, P<0.001), urinary tract infection (OR=1.75, 95%CI: 1.12-2.75, P=0.014) and intracranial rebleeding (OR=3.59, 95%CI: 1.30-9.91, P=0.013) group Q4 (>4.95 mg/L) was higher. Likewise, the risk of adverse outcomes in group Q4 was also higher than that in group Q1, including unfavorable outcome at discharge (OR=2.12, 95%CI: 1.43-3.14, P<0.001), mortality during hospitalization (OR=3.03, 95%CI: 1.26-7.33, P=0.014), mortality within 90 days (OR=2.33, 95%CI:1.29-4.22, P=0.005), mortality within 180 days (OR=1.92, 95%CI: 1.12-3.29, P=0.018), mortality within 1 year (OR=2.07, 95%CI:1.23-3.47, P=0.006) and mortality during the longest follow-up period (OR=1.97, 95%CI:1.26-3.09, P=0.003). After secondary grouping and PSM based on current clinical reference values, there were 90 cases, 87 cases, 90 cases, and 43 cases, respectively in groups q1, q2, q3 and q4. The risk of nosocomial infection (OR=2.26, 95%CI: 1.14-4.45, P=0.019), blood-borne infection (OR=8.86, 95%CI:1.08-72.78, P=0.042), poor prognosis at discharge (OR=4.92, 95%CI: 2.18-11.07, P<0.001), death within 180 days (OR=3.39, 95%CI: 1.04-11.08, P=0.043), death within 1 year (OR=3.23, 95%CI: 1.10-9.49, P=0.033), and death within the longest follow-up period (OR=3.28, 95%CI: 1.34-8.01, P=0.009) was still higher in group q4 than that in group q1. Conclusion: aSAH patients with high D-dimer level have a higher risk of complications and mortality during hospitalization and worse clinical prognosis.

Abstract
Investigate theclinical practice of seizure prophylaxis after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in Chinese neurosurgeons.Aquestionnaire for this theme was designed and was sent to respondents through the internet. From July 2021 to October 2021, atotal of forty-three eligible questionnaires were collected. All responders come from affiliated hospitals of medical schools in China. Each of these hospitals admitted more than one hundred patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage per year. Only 9.3% (4/43) of responders disagree with the prophylactic use of anticonvulsants. 86.04% (37/43) of responders perform seizure prophylaxis in clinical practice. Sodium valproate is the most commonly used regimen; 94.59% (35/37) of responders who perform prophylaxis chose this drug. The medication period differs sharply fromlessthan 3 daystolongerthan 14 daysamong different hospitals. The use of EEG was insufficient in Chinese patients. A low seizure rate was reported according to the feedback from Chinese neurosurgeons. In China, seizure prophylaxis after subarachnoid hemorrhage was not yet standardized. Clinicians' mastery of relevant knowledge is still not enough. Carrying out high-quality clinical research can help justify the use of anticonvulsants, which could also positively impact rational drug use.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Atorvastatin has been suggested to reduce hematoma volume and improve neurological outcomes in patients with chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). However, the benefits and harms of atorvastatin use after surgery in elderly patients are not well studied. PATIENTS AND METHODS We conducted a retrospective trial to analyze older people (> 60 years) with CSDH, those who were treated with surgical intervention. Patients were assigned to study group if they received oral atorvastatin after surgery at least 1 week, and patients without atorvastatin medication postoperatively were assigned to control group. The primary outcome was the overall rate of recurrence at 1 month after surgery. The main secondary endpoints were the scores on the modified Rankin Scale (mRS), hematoma volume, mortality, and complications after surgery. RESULTS A total of 49 eligible patients were included - 21 in the study group and 28 in the control group. The baseline characteristics were similar between the 2 groups. At 1 month, recurrence of subdual hematoma requiring repeat surgery was reported in 4 of 21 patients (19.0%) in the study group and in 5 of 28 patients (17.9%) in the control group (p=0.915). The hematoma volume was similar between the 2 groups (p=0.979). A favorable outcome (a score of 2 or less on the mRS) occurred in 90.5% of patients in the study group and in 96.4% of those in the control group (p=0.390). CONCLUSIONS In older people with CSDH, postoperative atorvastatin use barely reduces the incidence of recurrence and hematoma volume.

Prognostic Value of BUB1 for Predicting Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer Progression. Int J Mol Sci 2021; 22:ijms222312756. Abstract
Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is a common disease with a high recurrence rate requiring lifetime surveillance. Although NMIBC is not life-threatening, it can progress to muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), a lethal form of the disease. The management of the two diseases differs, and patients with MIBC require aggressive treatments such as chemotherapy and radical cystectomy. NMIBC patients at a high risk of progression benefit from early immediate cystectomy. Thus, identifying concordant markers for accurate risk stratification is critical to predict the prognosis of NMIBC. Candidate genetic biomarkers associated with NMIBC prognosis were screened by RNA-sequencing of 24 tissue samples, including 16 NMIBC and eight normal controls, and by microarray analysis (GSE13507). Lastly, we selected and investigated a mitotic checkpoint serine/threonine kinase, BUB1, that regulates chromosome segregation during the cell cycle. BUB1 gene expression was tested in 86 NMIBC samples and 15 controls by real-time qPCR. The performance of BUB1 as a prognostic biomarker for NMIBC was validated in the internal Chungbuk cohort (GSE13507) and the external UROMOL cohort (E-MTAB-4321). BUB1 expression was higher in NMIBC patients than in normal controls (p < 0.05), and the overexpression of BUB1 was correlated with NMIBC progression (log-rank test, p = 0.007). In in vitro analyses, BUB1 promoted the proliferation of bladder cancer cells by accelerating the G2/M transition of the cell cycle. Conclusively, BUB1 modulates the G2/M transition to promote the proliferation of bladder cancer cells, suggesting that it could serve as a prognostic marker in NMIBC.

Abstract
Macrophages are present in almost all body tissues. They detect and quickly respond to “environmental signals” in the tissue. Macrophages have been associated with numerous beneficial roles, such as host defense, wound healing, and tissue regeneration; however, they have also been linked to the development of diverse illnesses, particularly cancers and autoimmune disorders. Complex signaling, epigenetic, and metabolic pathways drive macrophage training and tolerance. The induced intracellular program differs depending on the type of initial stimuli and the tissue microenvironment. Due to the essential roles of macrophages in homeostatic and their association with the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases, recent studies have investigated the molecular mechanisms of macrophage training and tolerance. This review discusses the role of factors involved in macrophage training and tolerance, along with the current studies in human diseases.

Epigenomic Analysis of RAD51 ChIP-seq Data Reveals cis-regulatory Elements Associated with Autophagy in Cancer Cell Lines. Cancers (Basel) 2021; 13:cancers13112547. Abstract
Simple Summary RAD51 is a key enzyme involved in homologous recombination during DNA double-strand break repair. However, recent studies suggest that non-canonical roles of RAD51 may exist. The aim of our study was to assess regulatory roles of RAD51 by reanalyzing RAD51 ChIP-seq data in GM12878, HepG2, K562, and MCF-7 cell lines. We identified 5137, 2611, 7192, and 3498 RAD51-associated cis-regulatory elements in GM12878, HepG2, K562, and MCF-7 cell lines, respectively. Intriguingly, gene ontology analysis revealed that promoters of the autophagy pathway-related genes were most significantly occupied by RAD51 in all four cell lines, predicting a non-canonical role of RAD51 in regulating autophagy-related genes. Abstract RAD51 is a recombinase that plays a pivotal role in homologous recombination. Although the role of RAD51 in homologous recombination has been extensively studied, it is unclear whether RAD51 can be involved in gene regulation as a co-factor. In this study, we found evidence that RAD51 may contribute to the regulation of genes involved in the autophagy pathway with E-box proteins such as USF1, USF2, and/or MITF in GM12878, HepG2, K562, and MCF-7 cell lines. The canonical USF binding motif (CACGTG) was significantly identified at RAD51-bound cis-regulatory elements in all four cell lines. In addition, genome-wide USF1, USF2, and/or MITF-binding regions significantly coincided with the RAD51-associated cis-regulatory elements in the same cell line. Interestingly, the promoters of genes associated with the autophagy pathway, such as ATG3 and ATG5, were significantly occupied by RAD51 and regulated by RAD51 in HepG2 and MCF-7 cell lines. Taken together, these results unveiled a novel role of RAD51 and provided evidence that RAD51-associated cis-regulatory elements could possibly be involved in regulating autophagy-related genes with E-box binding proteins.

Abstract
Ge-on-Si plasmonics holds the promise for compact and low-cost solutions in the manipulation of THz radiation. We discuss here the plasmonic properties of doped Ge bow-tie antennas made with a low-point cost CMOS mainstream technology. These antennas display resonances between 500 and 700 GHz, probed by THz time domain spectroscopy. We show surface functionalization of the antennas with a thin layer of α-lipoic acid that red-shifts the antenna resonances by about 20 GHz. Moreover, we show that antennas protected with a silicon nitride cap layer exhibit a comparable red-shift when covered with the biolayer. This suggests that the electromagnetic fields at the hotspot extend well beyond the cap layer, enabling the possibility to use the antennas with an improved protection of the plasmonic material in conjunction with microfluidics.

Studies of Charm Quark Diffusion inside Jets Using Pb-Pb and pp Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2020; 125:102001. Abstract
The first study of charm quark diffusion with respect to the jet axis in heavy ion collisions is presented. The measurement is performed using jets with p_{T}^{jet}>60 GeV/c and D^{0} mesons with p_{T}^{D}>4 GeV/c in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV, recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The radial distribution of D^{0} mesons with respect to the jet axis is sensitive to the production mechanisms of the meson, as well as to the energy loss and diffusion processes undergone by its parent parton inside the strongly interacting medium produced in Pb-Pb collisions. When compared to Monte Carlo event generators, the radial distribution in pp collisions is found to be well described by pythia, while the slope of the distribution predicted by sherpa is steeper than that of the data. In Pb-Pb collisions, compared to the pp results, the D^{0} meson distribution for 4<p_{T}^{D}<20 GeV/c hints at a larger distance on average with respect to the jet axis, reflecting a diffusion of charm quarks in the medium created in heavy ion collisions. At higher p_{T}^{D}, the Pb-Pb and pp radial distributions are found to be similar.

IFN-γ synergistically activates IL23A gene in LPS-stimulated macrophages. THE JOURNAL OF IMMUNOLOGY 2020. Abstract
Abstract
The cytokine IL-23 is expressed by activated myeloid cells and contributes to the development of Th17-mediated immunity. Dysregulation of IL-23 is associated with chronic inflammatory diseases, but the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of IL23A gene in human macrophages, are largely unknown. Unlike murine macrophages, TLR4 signaling alone did not strongly induce expression of IL23A gene but was synergistically activated by IFN-γ priming. To identify human macrophage-specific enhancers in the IL23 gene locus, we used an integrated epigenomic approach including ATAC-seq and ChIP-seq. We found a putative enhancer which is located about 2 kb upstream of the IL23A transcription start site and binds macrophage-lineage-determining factors, such as PU.1 and C/EBP. In this putative IL-23 enhancer, histone acetylation and chromatin accessibility are synergistically increased by LPS stimulation in IFN-γ-primed macrophages. IFN-γ induced coordinate occupancy of STAT1 and IRF1 at IL23A promoter and enhancer. The expression of eRNA and the recruitment of chromatin looping-associated factors cohesin and CDK8-mediator kinase at IL23A enhancer and promoter were increased by IFN-γ priming. The functional relevance of IL-23 enhancer will be tested by eRNA-targeted knockdown and enhancer deletion experiments. These results identify the critical enhancer region in IFN-γ-mediated synergistic activation of TLR4-inducible IL-23 production in human macrophages.

The role of G protein-coupled receptor-related genes in cytochrome P450-mediated resistance of the house fly, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae), to imidacloprid. INSECT MOLECULAR BIOLOGY 2020; 29:92-103. Abstract
Ninety-four putative G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) were identified in the Musca domestica genome. They were annotated and compared with their homologues in Drosophila melanogaster. Phylogenetic analyses of the GPCRs from both species revealed that several family members shared a closer relationship based on the domain architecture. The expression profiles of these genes were examined by quantitative real-time PCR amongst three strains of the house fly, a near-isogenic line strain with imidacloprid resistance (N-IRS), the corresponding susceptible strain (CSS) and another strain derived from field populations with imidacloprid resistance (IRS). We found that five GPCR genes were upregulated in the N-IRS and eight GPCR genes were upregulated in the IRS strains compared to the CSS strain. The transgenic lines of D. melanogaster with the GPCR genes (LOC101899380 in the N-IRS strain and LOC101895664 in the IRS strain) exhibited significantly increased tolerance to imidacloprid, and higher expression of cytochrome P450 genes. Bioinformatic analysis of LOC101899380 was carried out based on its full-length nucleic acid sequence and putative amino acid sequence, and it was named Methuselah-like10 (Mthl10) owing to its homology with D. melanogaster Mthl10. A cell-base cell counting kit-8 toxicity assay demonstrated that the expression of the GPCR gene LOC101899380 in Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) cells using a baculovirus-mediated expression system can elevate the cell tolerance to imidacloprid, indirectly supporting the hypothesis that the GPCR gene LOC101899380 plays some role in imidacloprid resistance. These results should be useful for furthering understanding of the regulatory pathway by which house flies develop resistance.

Abstract
Invadosomes are invasive protrusions generated by cells which can secrete matrix metalloproteinases for focal digestion of extracellular matrix. They also aid invasive cancer cells in their transmigration through vascular endothelium. However, how the physical and chemical cues in a three-dimensional (3D) system signal the spatial localization of invadosomes remains largely unknown. Here we study the topographic guidance of invadosome formation in invasive nasopharyngeal cells under the stimulation of an inflammatory cytokine, TGF-β1, using engineered gratings with different width and depth. We first report that TGF-β1 can act as an external signal to upregulate the formation of invadosomes with a random distribution on a plane 2D surface. When the cells were seeded on parallel 3D gratings of 5 µm width and 1 µm depth, most of the invadosomes aligned to the edges of the gratings, indicating a topographic cue to the control of invadosome localization. While the number of invadosomes per cell were not upregulated when the cells were seeded on 3D topography, guidance of invadosomes localization to edges is correlated with cell migration directionality on 1 µm deep gratings. Invadosomes preferentially form at edges when the cells move at a lower speed and are guided along narrow gratings. The invadosomes forming at 3D edges also have a longer half-life than those forming on a plane surface. These data suggest that there are integrated biochemical and 3D geometric cues underlying the spatial regulation of invasive structures so as to elicit efficient invasion or metastasis of cells. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Nasopharyngeal cells were integrated with the biological cues and matrix topography to govern the activity and spatial distribution of invadosomes. The biochemical induction of invadosome formation by TGF-β1 in nasopharyngeal cells was observed. When the cells were seeded on parallel 3D gratings, most of the invadosomes aligned to the edges of the gratings due to topographical induced invadosome localization. While the number of invadosomes per cell were not upregulated, guidance of invadosomes localization to edges is correlated with cell migration directionality on 1 µm deep gratings. Invadosomes preferentially form at edges with a higher stability when the cells are guided along narrow gratings. The integrated biochemical and 3D geometric cues could elicit efficient invasion or metastasis of cells.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
The increase of life expectancy creates critical health needs that developed countries health systems have to deal with. They are also confronted to persistent health inequalities. A common vision of these issues may not be shared by the health care professionals, decision-makers and citizens. In the context of the launch of new public health laws in France, the French School of Public Health (EHESP) decided to offer a MOOC entitled “Public Health and Health System: transition and transformation” (2019).
Objectives
The MOOC intends to raise awareness and increase understanding of public health challenges. It is designed for a wide audience of professionals, decision-makers and citizens in the French speaking world. The content was designed by a multidisciplinary team of academics from the EHESP (N = 50) and a network of health professionals (N = 21). The 6 modules address major themes of the recent health policies, e.g. social and territorial inequalities in health, health care security, health pathways, innovation or health democracy.
Results
Over the course of 6 consecutive weeks, almost 7800 people have enrolled in this e-learning. They are provided with short teaching videos (109 capsules of 4-5’) and webinars, have access to a number of supplementary reading material and a variety of self-assessment. Active learning is enhanced via forum involving peers and teaching staff. The full course represents around 20 hours of teaching. So far, completion rate has attained 13% which compares well with usual rate for MOOCs. Participants include a wide range of professionals, students and citizens from 87 different countries (72% from France) and 50% had a master or higher degree. The overall satisfaction rate is 98%.
Conclusions
This MOOC attracted the attention of a wide and diverse audience regarding the major public health issues. Some public health agencies have expressed interest in implementing the MOOC into their professional development program of their staff.
Key messages
Health system reforms are constantly implemented to face new public health challenges. A multidisciplinary MOOC can help raise awareness and understanding of the issue being addressed by new policies.

Azimuthal separation in nearly back-to-back jet topologies in inclusive 2- and 3-jet events in pp collisions at s = 13 Te . THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2019; 79:773. [PMID: 31713548 PMCID: PMC6822773 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-019-7276-4] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/12/2019] [Accepted: 09/05/2019] [Indexed: 06/10/2023]
Abstract
A measurement for inclusive 2- and 3-jet events of the azimuthal correlation between the two jets with the largest transverse momenta, Δ ϕ 12 , is presented. The measurement considers events where the two leading jets are nearly collinear ("back-to-back") in the transverse plane and is performed for several ranges of the leading jet transverse momentum. Proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 Te and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb - 1 are used. Predictions based on calculations using matrix elements at leading-order and next-to-leading-order accuracy in perturbative quantum chromodynamics supplemented with leading-log parton showers and hadronization are generally in agreement with the measurements. Discrepancies between the measurement and theoretical predictions are as large as 15%, mainly in the region177 ∘ < Δ ϕ 12 < 180 ∘ . The 2- and 3-jet measurements are not simultaneously described by any of models.

Abstract
Exclusiveρ 770 0 photoproduction is measured for the first time in ultraperipheral pPb collisions ats NN = 5.02 Te with the CMS detector. The cross section σ ( γ p → ρ 770 0 p ) is 11.0 ± 1.4 (stat) ± 1.0 (syst) μ b at ⟨ W γ p ⟩ = 92.6 Ge for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies W γ p between 29 and 213 Ge . The differential cross section d σ / d | t | is measured in the interval0.025 < | t | < 1 Ge 2 as a function of W γ p , where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The results are compared with previous measurements and theoretical predictions. The measured cross section σ ( γ p → ρ 770 0 p ) has a power-law dependence on the photon-proton centre-of-mass, consistent with electron-proton collision measurements performed at HERA. The W γ p dependence of the exponential slope of the differential cross section d σ / d | t | is also measured.

Studies of Beauty Suppression via Nonprompt D^{0} Mesons in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 123:022001. Abstract
The transverse momentum spectra of D^{0} mesons from b hadron decays are measured at midrapidity (|y|<1) in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center of mass energy of 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The D^{0} mesons from b hadron decays are distinguished from prompt D^{0} mesons by their decay topologies. In Pb-Pb collisions, the B→D^{0} yield is found to be suppressed in the measured p_{T} range from 2 to 100 GeV/c as compared to pp collisions. The suppression is weaker than that of prompt D^{0} mesons and charged hadrons for p_{T} around 10 GeV/c. While theoretical calculations incorporating partonic energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma can successfully describe the measured B→D^{0} suppression at higher p_{T}, the data show an indication of larger suppression than the model predictions in the range of 2<p_{T}<5 GeV/c.

Abstract
A search is presented for a heavy pseudoscalar boson A decaying to a Z boson and a Higgs boson with mass of 125GeV . In the final state considered, the Higgs boson decays to a bottom quark and antiquark, and the Z boson decays either into a pair of electrons, muons, or neutrinos. The analysis is performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te . The data are found to be consistent with the background expectations. Exclusion limits are set in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models in the A boson mass range between 225 and 1000GeV .

Combined measurements of Higgs boson couplings in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 Te . THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2019; 79:421. [PMID: 31178657 PMCID: PMC6528832 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-019-6909-y] [Citation(s) in RCA: 21] [Impact Index Per Article: 4.2] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/27/2018] [Accepted: 05/02/2019] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
Combined measurements of the production and decay rates of the Higgs boson, as well as its couplings to vector bosons and fermions, are presented. The analysis uses the LHC proton-proton collision data set recorded with the CMS detector in 2016 ats = 13 Te , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 . The combination is based on analyses targeting the five main Higgs boson production mechanisms (gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with a W or Z boson, or a top quark-antiquark pair) and the following decay modes: H → γ γ , Z Z , W W , τ τ , b b , and μ μ . Searches for invisible Higgs boson decays are also considered. The best-fit ratio of the signal yield to the standard model expectation is measured to be μ = 1.17 ± 0.10 , assuming a Higgs boson mass of 125.09 Ge . Additional results are given for various assumptions on the scaling behavior of the production and decay modes, including generic parametrizations based on ratios of cross sections and branching fractions or couplings. The results are compatible with the standard model predictions in all parametrizations considered. In addition, constraints are placed on various two Higgs doublet models.

Jet Shapes of Isolated Photon-Tagged Jets in Pb-Pb and pp Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 122:152001. [PMID: 31050516 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.122.152001] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.2] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/23/2018] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
The modification of jet shapes in Pb-Pb collisions, relative to those in pp collisions, is studied for jets associated with an isolated photon. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. Jet shapes are constructed from charged particles with track transverse momenta (p_{T}) above 1 GeV/c in annuli around the axes of jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 GeV/c associated with an isolated photon with p_{T}^{γ}>60 GeV/c. The jet shape distributions are consistent between peripheral Pb-Pb and pp collisions, but are modified for more central Pb-Pb collisions. In these central Pb-Pb events, a larger fraction of the jet momentum is observed at larger distances from the jet axis compared to pp, reflecting the interaction between the partonic medium created in heavy ion collisions and the traversing partons.

Search for resonant production of second-generation sleptons with same-sign dimuon events in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2019; 79:305. [PMID: 31007588 PMCID: PMC6450616 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-019-6800-x] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/23/2018] [Accepted: 03/20/2019] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
A search is presented for resonant production of second-generation sleptons (μ ~ L ,ν ~ μ ) via the R-parity-violating coupling λ 211 ' to quarks, in events with two same-sign muons and at least two jets in the final state. The smuon (muon sneutrino) is expected to decay into a muon and a neutralino (chargino), which will then decay into a second muon and at least two jets. The analysis is based on the 2016 data set of proton-proton collisions ats = 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 . No significant deviation is observed with respect to standard model expectations. Upper limits on cross sections, ranging from 0.24 to 730fb , are derived in the context of two simplified models representing the dominant signal contributions leading to a same-sign muon pair. The cross section limits are translated into coupling limits for a modified constrained minimal supersymmetric model with λ 211 ' as the only nonzero R-parity violating coupling. The results significantly extend restrictions of the parameter space compared with previous searches for similar models.

Combination of Searches for Higgs Boson Pair Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 122:121803. [PMID: 30978057 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.122.121803] [Citation(s) in RCA: 9] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/23/2018] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
This Letter describes a search for Higgs boson pair production using the combined results from four final states: bbγγ, bbττ, bbbb, and bbVV, where V represents a W or Z boson. The search is performed using data collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment from LHC proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^{-1}. Limits are set on the Higgs boson pair production cross section. A 95% confidence level observed (expected) upper limit on the nonresonant production cross section is set at 22.2 (12.8) times the standard model value. A search for narrow resonances decaying to Higgs boson pairs is also performed in the mass range 250-3000 GeV. No evidence for a signal is observed, and upper limits are set on the resonance production cross section.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 Te . THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2019; 79:280. Abstract
A search for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks is performed in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The analyzed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 . The signal is characterized by a large missing transverse momentum recoiling against a bottom quark-antiquark system that has a large Lorentz boost. The number of events observed in the data is consistent with the standard model background prediction. Results are interpreted in terms of limits both on parameters of the type-2 two-Higgs doublet model extended by an additional light pseudoscalar boson a (2HDM+ a ) and on parameters of a baryonicZ ' simplified model. The 2HDM+ a model is tested experimentally for the first time. For the baryonicZ ' model, the presented results constitute the most stringent constraints to date.

Abstract
The exclusive photoproduction of Υ ( nS ) meson states from protons, γ p → Υ ( nS ) p (with n = 1 , 2 , 3 ), is studied in ultraperipheral p Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair ofs NN = 5.02 TeV . The measurement is performed using the Υ ( nS ) → μ + μ - decay mode, with data collected by the CMS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 32.6nb - 1 . Differential cross sections as functions of the Υ ( nS ) transverse momentum squared p T 2 , and rapidity y, are presented. The Υ ( 1 S ) photoproduction cross section is extracted in the rapidity range | y | < 2.2 , which corresponds to photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 91 < W γ p < 826 GeV . The data are compared to theoretical predictions based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics and to previous measurements.

Measurement of associated production of a W boson and a charm quark in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 Te . THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2019; 79:269. [PMID: 30971865 PMCID: PMC6432902 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-019-6752-1] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.6] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/25/2018] [Accepted: 03/04/2019] [Indexed: 05/02/2023]
Abstract
Measurements are presented of associated production of a W boson and a charm quark ( W + c ) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te . The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.7fb - 1 collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The W bosons are identified by their decay into a muon and a neutrino. The charm quarks are tagged via the full reconstruction ofD ∗ ( 2010 ) ± mesons that decay viaD ∗ ( 2010 ) ± → D 0 + π ± → K ∓ + π ± + π ± . A cross section is measured in the fiducial region defined by the muon transverse momentump T μ > 26 Ge , muon pseudorapidity| η μ | < 2.4 , and charm quark transverse momentump T c > 5 Ge . The inclusive cross section for this kinematic range is σ ( W + c ) = 1026 ± 31 (stat) + 76 - 72 (syst) pb . The cross section is also measured differentially as a function of the pseudorapidity of the muon from the W boson decay. These measurements are compared with theoretical predictions and are used to probe the strange quark content of the proton.

Search for Narrow Hγ Resonances in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 122:081804. Abstract
A search for heavy, narrow resonances decaying to a Higgs boson and a photon (Hγ) has been performed in proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^{-1} collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016. Events containing a photon and a Lorentz-boosted hadronically decaying Higgs boson reconstructed as a single, large-radius jet are considered, and the γ+jet invariant mass spectrum is analyzed for the presence of narrow resonances. To increase the sensitivity of the search, events are categorized depending on whether or not the large-radius jet can be identified as a result of the merging of two jets originating from b quarks. Results in both categories are found to agree with the predictions of the standard model. Upper limits on the production rate of Hγ resonances are set as a function of their mass in the range of 720-3250 GeV, representing the most stringent constraints to date.

Abstract
Measurements of normalized differential cross sections as functions of the multiplicity and kinematic variables of charged-particle tracks from the underlying event in top quark and antiquark pair production are presented. The measurements are performed in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 Te , and are based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb - 1 . Events containing one electron, one muon, and two jets from the hadronization and fragmentation of b quarks are used. These measurements characterize, for the first time, properties of the underlying event in top quark pair production and show no deviation from the universality hypothesis at energy scales typically above twice the top quark mass.

Search for rare decays of Z and Higgs bosons to J / ψ and a photon in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2019; 79:94. [PMID: 30872972 PMCID: PMC6383578 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-019-6562-5] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.6] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/23/2018] [Accepted: 01/04/2019] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
A search is presented for decays of Z and Higgs bosons to a J / ψ meson and a photon, with the subsequent decay of the J / ψ toμ + μ - . The analysis uses data from proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 ats = 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The observed limit on the Z → J / ψ γ decay branching fraction, assuming that the J / ψ meson is produced unpolarized, is 1.4 × 10 - 6 at 95% confidence level, which corresponds to a rate higher than expected in the standard model by a factor of 15. For extreme-polarization scenarios, the observed limit changes from - 13.6 to + 8.6 % with respect to the unpolarized scenario. The observed upper limit on the branching fraction for H → J / ψ γ where the J / ψ meson is assumed to be transversely polarized is 7.6 × 10 - 4 , a factor of 260 larger than the standard model prediction. The results for the Higgs boson are combined with previous data from proton-proton collisions ats = 8 TeV to produce an observed upper limit on the branching fraction for H → J / ψ γ that is a factor of 220 larger than the standard model value.

Search for single production of vector-like quarks decaying to a top quark and a W boson in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2019; 79:90. [PMID: 30814908 PMCID: PMC6358121 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-019-6556-3] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/23/2018] [Accepted: 12/27/2018] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
A search is presented for the single production of vector-like quarks in proton-proton collisions ats = 13 TeV . The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 , were recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analysis focuses on the vector-like quark decay into a top quark and a W boson, with one muon or electron in the final state. The mass of the vector-like quark candidate is reconstructed from hadronic jets, the lepton, and the missing transverse momentum. Methods for the identification of b quarks and of highly Lorentz boosted hadronically decaying top quarks and W bosons are exploited in this search. No significant deviation from the standard model background expectation is observed. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction as a function of the vector-like quark mass, which range from 0.3 to 0.03pb for vector-like quark masses of 700 to 2000GeV . Mass exclusion limits up to 1660GeV are obtained, depending on the vector-like quark type, coupling, and decay width. These represent the most stringent exclusion limits for the single production of vector-like quarks in this channel.

Abstract
A search for the Higgs boson decaying to two oppositely charged muons is presented using data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016 at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^{-1}. Data are found to be compatible with the predicted background. For a Higgs boson with a mass of 125.09 GeV, the 95% confidence level observed (background-only expected) upper limit on the production cross section times the branching fraction to a pair of muons is found to be 3.0 (2.5) times the standard model expectation. In combination with data recorded at center-of-mass energies sqrt[s]=7 and 8 TeV, the background-only expected upper limit improves to 2.2 times the standard model value with a standard model expected significance of 1.0 standard deviation. The corresponding observed upper limit is 2.9 with an observed significance of 0.9 standard deviation. This corresponds to an observed upper limit on the standard model Higgs boson branching fraction to muons of 6.4×10^{-4} and to an observed signal strength of 1.0±1.0(stat)±0.1(syst).

Search for Dark Matter Particles Produced in Association with a Top Quark Pair at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 122:011803. Abstract
A search is performed for dark matter particles produced in association with a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^{-1} recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. No significant excess over the standard model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted using simplified models of dark matter production via spin-0 mediators that couple to dark matter particles and to standard model quarks, providing constraints on the coupling strength between the mediator and the quarks. These are the most stringent collider limits to date for scalar mediators, and the most stringent for pseudoscalar mediators at low masses.

Abstract
Measurements of inclusive isolated-photon and photon+jet production in proton-proton collisions ats = 13 TeV are presented. The analysis uses data collected by the CMS experiment in 2015, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.26fb - 1 . The cross section for inclusive isolated photon production is measured as a function of the photon transverse energy in a fiducial region. The cross section for photon+jet production is measured as a function of the photon transverse energy in the same fiducial region with identical photon requirements and with the highest transverse momentum jet. All measurements are in agreement with predictions from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD.

Observation of Medium-Induced Modifications of Jet Fragmentation in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV Using Isolated Photon-Tagged Jets. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2018; 121:242301. [PMID: 30608764 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.121.242301] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/15/2018] [Revised: 10/16/2018] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
Measurements of fragmentation functions for jets associated with an isolated photon are presented for the first time in pp and Pb-Pb collisions. The analysis uses data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. Fragmentation functions are obtained for jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 GeV/c in events containing an isolated photon with p_{T}^{γ}>60 GeV/c, using charged tracks with transverse momentum p_{T}^{trk}>1 GeV/c in a cone around the jet axis. The association with an isolated photon constrains the initial p_{T} and azimuthal angle of the parton whose shower produced the jet. For central Pb-Pb collisions, modifications of the jet fragmentation functions are observed when compared to those measured in pp collisions, while no significant differences are found in the 50% most peripheral collisions. Jets in central Pb-Pb events show an excess (depletion) of low (high) p_{T} particles, with a transition around 3 GeV/c. This measurement shows for the first time the in-medium shower modifications of partons (quark dominated) with well-defined initial kinematics. It constitutes a new well-controlled reference for testing theoretical models of the parton passage through the quark-gluon plasma.

Search for Leptoquarks Coupled to Third-Generation Quarks in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2018; 121:241802. Abstract
Three of the most significant measured deviations from standard model predictions, the enhanced decay rate for B→D^{(*)}τν, hints of lepton universality violation in B→K^{(*)}ℓℓ decays, and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, can be explained by the existence of leptoquarks (LQs) with large couplings to third-generation quarks and masses at the TeV scale. The existence of these states can be probed at the LHC in high energy proton-proton collisions. A novel search is presented for pair production of LQs coupled to a top quark and a muon using data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^{-1}, recorded by the CMS experiment. No deviation from the standard model prediction has been observed and scalar LQs decaying exclusively into tμ are excluded up to masses of 1420 GeV. The results of this search are combined with those from previous searches for LQ decays into tτ and bν, which excluded scalar LQs below masses of 900 and 1080 GeV. Vector LQs are excluded up to masses of 1190 GeV for all possible combinations of branching fractions to tμ, tτ and bν. With this analysis, all relevant couplings of LQs with an electric charge of -1/3 to third-generation quarks are probed for the first time.

Evidence for the Associated Production of a Single Top Quark and a Photon in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2018; 121:221802. [PMID: 30547617 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.121.221802] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.2] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/08/2018] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
The first evidence of events consistent with the production of a single top quark in association with a photon is reported. The analysis is based on proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV and recorded by the CMS experiment in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^{-1}. Events are selected by requiring the presence of a muon (μ), a photon (γ), an imbalance in transverse momentum from an undetected neutrino (ν), and at least two jets (j) of which exactly one is identified as associated with the hadronization of a b quark. A multivariate discriminant based on topological and kinematic event properties is employed to separate signal from background processes. An excess above the background-only hypothesis is observed, with a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. A fiducial cross section is measured for isolated photons with transverse momentum greater than 25 GeV in the central region of the detector. The measured product of the cross section and branching fraction is σ(pp→tγj)B(t→μνb)=115±17(stat)±30(syst) fb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction.

Measurement of differential cross sections for Z boson production in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2018; 78:965. [PMID: 30881214 PMCID: PMC6394299 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-018-6373-0] [Citation(s) in RCA: 4] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/14/2018] [Accepted: 10/29/2018] [Indexed: 05/31/2023]
Abstract
The production of a Z boson, decaying to two charged leptons, in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV is measured. Data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC are used that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.19fb -1 . The cross section is measured as a function of the jet multiplicity and its dependence on the transverse momentum of the Z boson, the jet kinematic variables (transverse momentum and rapidity), the scalar sum of the jet momenta, which quantifies the hadronic activity, and the balance in transverse momentum between the reconstructed jet recoil and the Z boson. The measurements are compared with predictions from four different calculations. The first two merge matrix elements with different parton multiplicities in the final state and parton showering, one of which includes one-loop corrections. The third is a fixed-order calculation with next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy for the process with a Z boson and one parton in the final state. The fourth combines the fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of the process with no parton in the final state with next-to-next-to-leading logarithm resummation and parton showering.

Measurement of the top quark mass with lepton+jets final states using p p collisions at s = 13 TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2018; 78:891. [PMID: 30881206 PMCID: PMC6394251 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-018-6332-9] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/03/2018] [Accepted: 10/11/2018] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
The mass of the top quark is measured using a sample of t t ¯ events collected by the CMS detector using proton-proton collisions ats = 13 TeV at the CERN LHC. Events are selected with one isolated muon or electron and at least four jets from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 . For each event the mass is reconstructed from a kinematic fit of the decay products to a t t ¯ hypothesis. Using the ideogram method, the top quark mass is determined simultaneously with an overall jet energy scale factor (JSF), constrained by the mass of the W boson in q q ¯ ' decays. The measurement is calibrated on samples simulated at next-to-leading order matched to a leading-order parton shower. The top quark mass is found to be 172.25 ± 0.08 (stat+JSF) ± 0.62 (syst) GeV . The dependence of this result on the kinematic properties of the event is studied and compared to predictions of different models of t t ¯ production, and no indications of a bias in the measurements are observed.

Abstract
This Letter presents the observation of the rare Z boson decay Z→ψℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}. Here, ψ represents contributions from direct J/ψ and ψ(2S)→J/ψX, ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} is a pair of electrons or muons, and the J/ψ meson is detected via its decay to μ^{+}μ^{-}. The sample of proton-proton collision data, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^{-1}. The signal is observed with a significance in excess of 5 standard deviations. After subtraction of the ψ(2S)→J/ψX contribution, the ratio of the branching fraction of the exclusive decay Z→J/ψℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} to the decay Z→μ^{+}μ^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-} within a fiducial phase space is measured to be B(Z→J/ψℓ^{+}ℓ^{-})/B(Z→μ^{+}μ^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-})=0.67±0.18(stat)±0.05(syst).

Abstract
This Letter presents the results of a search for pair-produced particles of masses above 100 GeV that each decay into at least four quarks. Using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2015-2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 38.2 fb^{-1}, reconstructed particles are clustered into two large jets of similar mass, each consistent with four-parton substructure. No statistically significant excess of data over the background prediction is observed in the distribution of average jet mass. Pair-produced squarks with dominant hadronic R-parity-violating decays into four quarks and with masses between 0.10 and 0.72 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. Similarly, pair-produced gluinos that decay into five quarks are also excluded with masses between 0.10 and 1.41 TeV at 95% confidence level. These are the first constraints that have been placed on pair-produced particles with masses below 400 GeV that decay into four or five quarks, bridging a significant gap in the coverage of R-parity-violating supersymmetry parameter space.

Search for new physics in dijet angular distributions using proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV and constraints on dark matter and other models. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2018; 78:789. [PMID: 30956565 PMCID: PMC6413623 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-018-6242-x] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/21/2018] [Accepted: 09/13/2018] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model, based on measurements of dijet angular distributions in proton-proton collisions ats = 13 TeV . The data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 . The observed distributions, corrected to particle level, are found to be in agreement with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics that include electroweak corrections. Constraints are placed on models containing quark contact interactions, extra spatial dimensions, quantum black holes, or dark matter, using the detector-level distributions. In a benchmark model where only left-handed quarks participate, contact interactions are excluded at the 95% confidence level up to a scale of 12.8 or 17.5TeV, for destructive or constructive interference, respectively. The most stringent lower limits to date are set on the ultraviolet cutoff in the Arkani-Hamed-Dimopoulos-Dvali model of extra dimensions. In the Giudice-Rattazzi-Wells convention, the cutoff scale is excluded up to 10.1TeV. The production of quantum black holes is excluded for masses below 5.9 and 8.2TeV, depending on the model. For the first time, lower limits between 2.0 and 4.6TeVare set on the mass of a dark matter mediator for (axial-)vector mediators, for the universal quark couplingg q = 1.0 .

Observation of Higgs Boson Decay to Bottom Quarks. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2018; 121:121801. [PMID: 30296133 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.121.121801] [Citation(s) in RCA: 25] [Impact Index Per Article: 4.2] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/24/2018] [Indexed: 06/08/2023]
Abstract
The observation of the standard model (SM) Higgs boson decay to a pair of bottom quarks is presented. The main contribution to this result is from processes in which Higgs bosons are produced in association with a W or Z boson (VH), and are searched for in final states including 0, 1, or 2 charged leptons and two identified bottom quark jets. The results from the measurement of these processes in a data sample recorded by the CMS experiment in 2017, comprising 41.3 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, are described. When combined with previous VH measurements using data collected at sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV, an excess of events is observed at m_{H}=125 GeV with a significance of 4.8 standard deviations, where the expectation for the SM Higgs boson is 4.9. The corresponding measured signal strength is 1.01±0.22. The combination of this result with searches by the CMS experiment for H→bb[over ¯] in other production processes yields an observed (expected) significance of 5.6 (5.5) standard deviations and a signal strength of 1.04±0.20.

Abstract
A measurement is presented of the Z / γ ∗ → τ τ cross section in pp collisions ats = 13 TeV , using data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb - 1 . The product of the inclusive cross section and branching fraction is measured to be σ ( pp → Z / γ ∗ +X ) B ( Z / γ ∗ → τ τ ) = 1848 ± 12 ( stat ) ± 67 (syst \,+\,lumi) pb , in agreement with the standard model expectation, computed at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The measurement is used to validate new analysis techniques relevant for future measurements of τ lepton production. The measurement also provides the reconstruction efficiency and energy scale for τ decays to hadrons+ ν τ final states, determined with respective relative uncertainties of 2.2 and 0.9%.

Search for third-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to a top quark and a τ lepton at s = 13 Te . THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2018; 78:707. [PMID: 30839784 PMCID: PMC6191165 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-018-6143-z] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/07/2018] [Accepted: 08/08/2018] [Indexed: 06/09/2023]
Abstract
A search for pair production of heavy scalar leptoquarks (LQs), each decaying into a top quark and a τ lepton, is presented. The search considers final states with an electron or a muon, one or two τ leptons that decayed to hadrons, and additional jets. The data were collected in 2016 in proton-proton collisions ats = 13 Te with the CMS detector at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb - 1 . No evidence for pair production of LQs is found. Assuming a branching fraction of unity for the decay LQ → t τ , upper limits on the production cross section are set as a function of LQ mass, excluding masses below 900Ge at 95% confidence level. These results provide the most stringent limits to date on the production of scalar LQs that decay to a top quark and a τ lepton.

Measurement of the weak mixing angle using the forward-backward asymmetry of Drell-Yan events in p p collisions at 8 TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2018; 78:701. Abstract
A measurement is presented of the effective leptonic weak mixing angle ( sin 2 θ eff ℓ ) using the forward-backward asymmetry of Drell-Yan lepton pairs ( μ μ and e e ) produced in proton-proton collisions at s = 8 TeV at the CMS experiment of the LHC. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 18.8 and 19.6 fb - 1 in the dimuon and dielectron channels, respectively, containing 8.2 million dimuon and 4.9 million dielectron events. With more events and new analysis techniques, including constraints obtained on the parton distribution functions from the measured forward-backward asymmetry, the statistical and systematic uncertainties are significantly reduced relative to previous CMS measurements. The extracted value of sin 2 θ eff ℓ from the combined dilepton data is sin 2 θ eff ℓ = 0.23101 ± 0.00036 (stat) ± 0.00018 (syst) ± 0.00016 (theo) ± 0.00031 (parton distributions in proton) = 0.23101 ± 0.00053 .

Observation of the χ_{b1}(3P) and χ_{b2}(3P) and Measurement of their Masses. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2018; 121:092002. [PMID: 30230889 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.121.092002] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.2] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/28/2018] [Revised: 07/08/2018] [Indexed: 06/08/2023]
Abstract
The χ_{b1}(3P) and χ_{b2}(3P) states are observed through their ϒ(3S)γ decays, using an event sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The data were collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 80.0 fb^{-1}. The ϒ(3S) mesons are identified through their dimuon decay channel, while the low-energy photons are detected after converting to e^{+}e^{-} pairs in the silicon tracker, leading to a χ_{b}(3P) mass resolution of 2.2 MeV. This is the first time that the J=1 and 2 states are well resolved and their masses individually measured: 10513.42±0.41(stat)±0.18(syst) MeV and 10524.02±0.57(stat)±0.18(syst) MeV; they are determined with respect to the world-average value of the ϒ(3S) mass, which has an uncertainty of 0.5 MeV. The mass splitting is measured to be 10.60±0.64(stat)±0.17(syst) MeV.

Measurement of charged particle spectra in minimum-bias events from proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2018; 78:697. Abstract
Pseudorapidity, transverse momentum, and multiplicity distributions are measured in the pseudorapidity range | η | < 2.4 for charged particles with transverse momenta satisfyingp T > 0.5 GeV in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy ofs = 13 TeV . Measurements are presented in three different event categories. The most inclusive of the categories corresponds to an inelastic p p data set, while the other two categories are exclusive subsets of the inelastic sample that are either enhanced or depleted in single diffractive dissociation events. The measurements are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators used to describe high-energy hadronic interactions in collider and cosmic-ray physics.
