Neutron Star Stability in Light of the Neutron Decay Anomaly

A recent proposal suggests that experimental discrepancies on the lifetime of neutrons can be resolved if neutrons decay to dark matter. At the same time it has been demonstrated that such a decay mode would soften the nuclear equation of the state resulting in neutron stars with a maximum mass much below currently observed ones. In this Letter, we demonstrate that appropriate dark matter-baryon interactions can accommodate neutron stars with mass above two solar masses. We compare this stabilization mechanism to one based on dark matter self-interactions, finding that it is less sensitive to the details of the nuclear equation of state. We present a simple microscopic model realization of this mechanism.

NonPrimordial Solar Mass Black Holes

We propose a mechanism that can convert a sizable fraction of neutron stars into black holes with mass ∼1  M_{⊙}, too light to be produced via stellar evolution. We show that asymmetric fermionic dark matter of mass on the teraelectron volt scale, with attractive self-interaction within the range that alleviates the problems of collisionless cold dark matter, can accumulate in a neutron star and collapse, forming a black hole that converts the rest of the star to a solar mass black hole. We estimate the fraction of neutron stars that can become black holes without contradicting neutron star observations. Such solar mass black holes could be in binary systems, which may be searched for by existing and forthcoming gravitational wave detectors. The (non-)observation of binary mergers of solar mass black holes may thus test the nature of dark matter.

Probing Sub-GeV Dark Matter with Conventional Detectors

The direct detection of dark matter particles with mass below the GeV scale is hampered by soft nuclear recoil energies and finite detector thresholds. For a given maximum relative velocity, the kinematics of elastic dark matter nucleus scattering sets a principal limit on detectability. Here, we propose to bypass the kinematic limitations by considering the inelastic channel of photon emission from bremsstrahlung in the nuclear recoil. Our proposed method allows us to set the first limits on dark matter below 500 MeV in the plane of dark matter mass and cross section with nucleons. In situations where a dark-matter-electron coupling is suppressed, bremsstrahlung may constitute the only path to probe low-mass dark matter awaiting new detector technologies with lowered recoil energy thresholds.

White Dwarf Critical Tests for Modified Gravity

Scalar-tensor theories of gravity can lead to modifications of the gravitational force inside astrophysical objects. We exhibit that compact stars such as white dwarfs provide a unique setup to test beyond Horndeski theories of G^{3} type. We obtain stringent and independent constraints on the parameter ϒ characterizing the deviations from Newtonian gravity using the mass-radius relation, the Chandrasekhar mass limit, and the maximal rotational frequency of white dwarfs. We find that white dwarfs impose stronger constraints on ϒ than red and brown dwarfs.

Limits on self-interacting dark matter from neutron stars

We impose new severe constraints on the self-interactions of fermionic asymmetric dark matter based on observations of nearby old neutron stars. Weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) self-interactions mediated by Yukawa-type interactions can lower significantly the number of WIMPs necessary for gravitational collapse of the WIMP population accumulated in a neutron star. Even nearby neutron stars located at regions of low dark matter density can accrete a sufficient number of WIMPs that can potentially collapse, form a mini black hole, and destroy the host star. Based on this, we derive constraints on the WIMP self-interactions which in some cases are by several orders of magnitude stricter than the ones from the bullet cluster.

Excluding light asymmetric bosonic dark matter

We argue that current neutron star observations exclude asymmetric bosonic noninteracting dark matter in the range from 2 keV to 16 GeV, including the 5-15 GeV range favored by DAMA and CoGeNT. If bosonic weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are composite of fermions, the same limits apply provided the compositeness scale is higher than ∼10¹²  GeV (for WIMP mass ∼1  GeV). In the case of repulsive self-interactions, we exclude the large range of WIMP masses and interaction cross sections which complements the constraints imposed by observations of the Bullet Cluster.

Spontaneous bilateral subcapital hip fracture due to multiple myeloma: an 18-month follow-up

We present a rare case of bilateral subcapital hip fracture as a first sign of multiple myeloma in a young man. Right femoral neck fracture was treated by three Asnis screws and the left one by hemiarthroplasty. In order to avoid implant failure, we used zoledronic acid, a bisphosphonate compound, instead of methacrylate cement. After an 18-month follow-up, there was no evidence of avascular necrosis, no implant failure and no periprothetic fracture.

Gapless color-flavor-locked quark matter

In neutral cold quark matter that is so dense that the strange quark mass Ms is unimportant, all three quark flavors pair in a color-flavor locked (CFL) pattern, and all nine fermionic quasiparticles have a gap Delta (or 2Delta). We argue that, as the density decreases (or Ms increases), there is a quantum phase transition (at M(2s/mu approximately 2Delta) to a new "gapless CFL phase" in which only seven quasiparticles have a gap. There is still an unbroken U(1)(Q) gluon/photon, but, unlike CFL, gapless CFL is a Q conductor with gapless (charged) quasiquarks and a nonzero electron density at zero temperature, so its low energy effective theory and astrophysical properties are qualitatively new. At the transition, the dispersion relations of both gapless quasiparticles are quadratic, but for larger M2s/mu, one becomes conventionally linear while the other remains quadratic, up to tiny corrections.
