Abstract
The onion non-edible outside layers represent a widely available waste material deriving from its processing and consumption. As onion is a vegetable showing many beneficial properties for human health, a study aiming to evaluate the use of extract deriving from the non-edible outside layers was planned. An eco-friendly extraction method was optimized using a hydroalcoholic solution as solvent. The obtained extract was deeply characterized by in vitro methods and then formulated in autoadhesive, biocompatible and pain-free hydrogel polymeric films. The extract, very soluble in water, showed antioxidant, radical scavenging, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities, suggesting a potential dermal application for wounds treatment. In vitro studies showed a sustained release of the extract from the hydrogel polymeric film suitable to reach concentrations necessary for both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. Test performed on human keratinocytes showed that the formulation is safe suggesting that the projected formulation could be a valuable tool for wound treatment.

Abstract
A new class of foreign substances present in the unsaponifiable fraction of vegetable oils undergone to chemical interesterification was systematically investigated. Their chemical structure, corresponding to dialkyl ketones (DAK) molecules, was elucidated both by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). An analytical protocol aimed to qualitative and quantitative detection of DAK molecules in vegetable oils of confectionery industry interest was developed. Being the range of concentration levels to be evaluated dependent on the technological task of interesterification process, the quantitation step was thoroughly examined. All the validation parameters were satisfactory and particularly the concentration determinations were made more reliable by the contemporary use of several quantitation standards. GC-MS and LC-HRMS analytical techniques exhibited comparable performances even if the second one shown better detection sensitivity.

Abstract
Background Metastatic renal cell carcinoma is a “capricious” tumor. Many prognostic factors have been evaluated, treatment is still controversial, and results are not coincident. Methods We reviewed 156 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Survival from the time of diagnosis was the end point of the study. The influence on survival of age, sex, nephrectomy, disease-free interval, performance status, site and number of metastases was analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analysis were done. Survival according to different therapies was also evaluated. Results In our study, no nephrectomy, a disease-free interval < 24 months, > 2 metastatic sites and a performance status > 2 proved to be risk factors. According to the number of risk factors, 3 groups of patients were identified (low, intermediate and high risk). We observed 3 kinds of responses to treatments: 1) in untreated patients (n = 48), median overall survival was 6 months, and the 24-month survival rate was 8%; 2) in patients treated with hormone therapy and/or chemotherapy (n = 73), median overall survival was 13 months, and the 24-month survival rate was 24%; 3) in patients treated with interferon and/or interleukin-2 (n = 35), median overall survival was 16 months and the 24-month survival rate was 34%. Conclusions Our results are only partially in accordance with those observed by other authors. Risk factors and treatment must be determined in more defined and selected studies.

Abstract
Background Interleukin-2 therapy is known to cause many biologic effects, which are enhanced by the administration of interferon prior to or immediately after interleukin-2 infusion. Some of these effects could be related to the clinical response. Methods Sixteen patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma were treated with continuous infusion of interleukin-2 plus alpha-2 interferon. Differential leukocyte count and lymphocyte subset evaluation were performed every 3 days during interleukin-2 treatment. At each cycle, the presence of the following antibodies was tested: antithyroid, antinuclear, antiplatelet and antierythrocyte. Results Fifteen patients were evaluable for response. No complete response was observed. Five patients obtained partial response (33%) and 3 stable disease (20%): 2 of them underwent surgical resection of metastases and obtained complete response. Some of our patients showed a significant increase in eosinophils, CD25+ lymphocytes and antithyroid antibodies. The association of these parameters, calculated with a “score” system, was also related to a better clinical response. Conclusions Eosinophils, CD25+ lymphocytes and antithyroid antibodies could have a predictive value for the efficacy of interleukin-2 and alpha-2 interferon therapy in metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

Abstract
We report a case of cystadenocarcinoma occurring in a pregnant woman. After child birth, a subtotal pancreatectomy was performed, without rupture of the cyst. The patient is asymptomatic, 24 months after sugery. The presentation of cystadenocarcinoma in pregnancy has been reported in another single case. The possibility of hormonal dependence is discussed.

Abstract
Background The purpose of the present study was to investigate the therapeutic effectiveness of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon (IFN), either alone or in combination, in comparable groups of patients affected by advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Patients and methods In order to limit selection biases, treatment was allocated on a random basis. Patients randomized to IL-2 alone were scheduled to receive eight rIL-2 24-hour i.v. infusion cycles, days 1 to 4, at a daily dose of 18 x 106 IU/m2 for a total of 25 weeks. Patients randomized to IFN alone were scheduled to receive rIFN-α at a daily dose of 6 x 106 IU/m2, days 1, 3 and 5, every week for a total of 52 weeks. Patients randomized to the combination of IFN and IL-2 were given the same drugs at the same daily doses for a total of 24 weeks. Drug dose was modified according to toxicity. Results Twenty-three percent (95% CI: ± 17.5) of patients treated with IL-2 alone showed an objective response to treatment (9% CR). The corresponding figures in patients treated with IFN alone or IFN plus IL-2 were 9% (95% CI: ± 11.9) and 9% (95% CI: ± 11.9), respectively. Complete responses were observed only in patients treated with IL-2. The median duration of response in the IL-2 arm was 18 months (range, 9.5-24). The duration of the two responses achieved by IFN alone was seven and nine, months, respectively. The corresponding figures in the two patients responding to the combination of IFN with IL-2 were 19 and 27 months, respectively. Total IL-2 dose appeared to be a major predictor of response. Only a minority of patients experienced grade 3-4 toxicity, the incidence being higher in those treated with IL-2 or IL-2 plus IFN. Conclusions Neither IFN nor IL-2 or the combination of the two appear to be very active in patients with advanced RCC, even when trial entry was restricted to patients with relatively indolent disease. This stresses the need for the development of new approaches.

Abstract
Aim: The increased consumption of traditional medicinal plants has been driven by the notion that herbal products are safe and efficient. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and the protective effect of a hydro alcoholic extract of Desmodium adscendens (DA) on liver (HEPG2) and kidney (LLC-PK1) cells. Materials and Methods: A hydro alcoholic extract of DA was used. HEPG2 or LLC-PK1 cells were treated with different does of DA, and viability test (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium [MTS]), cytotoxicity assay lactate dehydrogenase (LDH release) and study of the cell morphology were used in order to determine effects of DA on these two cells. Results: A viability test (MTS), a cytotoxicity assay LDH release and a study of the cell morphology revealed that pretreatment with 1 mg/ml or 10 mg/ml DA did not alter viability or LDH release in HEPG2 or LLC-PK1 cells. However, DA at the dose of 100 mg/ml significantly decreased cell viability, by about 40% (P < 0.05). Further, MTS studies revealed that DA 1 mg/ml or 10 mg/ml protected LLC-PK1 cells against a glucose-induced oxidative stress of 24 h (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Hence, the lowest concentrations of DA (1 mg/ml and 10 mg/ml) were safe for HEPG2 and LLC-PK1 and protective against an oxidative stress in LLC-PK1 cells. These data suggest that DA extracts used as a traditional herbal as food health supplements should be used at the lowest dosage.

Abstract
The many effects of the African medicinal herb Desmodium adscendens were studied in the 1980s and 1990s. In spite of this, a comprehensive analytical protocol for the quality control of its constituents (soyasaponins, alkaloids and flavonoids) has not yet been formulated and reported. This study deals with the optimization of extraction conditions from the plant and qualitative identification of the constituents by HPLC-diode array UV and multistage mass spectrometry. Plant constituents were extracted from leaves by liquid-liquid and solid matrix dispersion extraction. Separation was achieved via RP-C18 liquid chromatographywith UV and MS(n) detection and mass spectrometry analysis was conducted by electrospray ionization ion trap or orbitrap mass spectrometry. High resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was used for structural identification of active molecules relating to soyasaponins and alkaloids. The flavonoid fragmentations were preliminarily studied by HRMS in order to accurately characterize the more common neutral losses. However, the high number of isomeric species induced us to make recourse to a more extended chromatographic separation in order to enable useful tandem mass spectrometry and ultraviolet spectral interpretation to propose a reasonable chemical classification of these polyphenols. 35 compounds of this class were identified herein with respect to the five reported in literature in this way we made up a comprehensive protocol for the qualitative analysis of the high complexity content of this plant. This result paves the way for both reliable quality control of potential phytochemical medicaments and possible future systematic clinical studies.

Abstract
RATIONALE A comprehensive study of the environmental fate of pollutants is more and more required, above all on new contaminants, i.e. pharmaceuticals. As high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS(n)) may be a suitable analytical approach for characterization of unknown compounds, its performance was evaluated in this study. METHODS The analyses were carried out using liquid chromatography (LC) (electrospray ionization (ESI) in positive mode) coupled with a LTQ-Orbitrap analyzer. High-resolution mass spectrometry was employed to assess the evolution of the drug transformation processes over time; accurate masses of protonated molecular ions and sequential product ions were reported with an error below 5 millimass units, which guarantee the correct assignment of their molecular formula in all cases, while their MS(2) and MS(3) spectra showed several structurally diagnostic ions that allowed characterization of the different transformation products (TPs) and to distinguish the isobaric species. RESULTS The simulation of phototransformation occurring in the aquatic environment and identification of biotic and abiotic transformation products of the two pharmaceuticals were carried out in heterogeneous photocatalysis using titanium dioxide, aimed to recreate conditions similar to those found in the environmental samples. Twenty-eight main species were identified after carbamazepine transformation and twenty-nine for clarithromycin. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that HRMS, combined with LC, is a technique able to play a key role in the evaluation of the environmental fate of pollutants and allows elucidation of the transformation pathways followed by the two drugs.

Abstract
In this paper, a comprehensive study of the fate of an antibiotic, lincomycin, in the aquatic environment is presented. High-resolution mass spectrometry was employed to assess the evolution of the process over time. Formation of intermediate compounds was followed by high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS); accurate mass-to-charge ratios of parent ions were reported with inaccuracy below 1 mmu, which guarantee the correct assignment of their molecular formula in all cases, while their MS(2) and MS(3) spectra showed several structural-diagnostic ions that allowed to characterize the different transformation products (TPs) and to discriminate the isobaric species. The simulation of phototransformation occurring in the aquatic environment and the identification of biotic and abiotic TPs of the pharmaceutical compound were carried out in different experimental conditions: dark experiments, homogeneous photolysis and heterogeneous photocatalysis using titanium dioxide, in order to recreate conditions similar to those found in the environment. Twenty-one main species were identified afterwards lincomycin transformation. Several isomeric species were formed and characterized by analyzing MS and MS(n) spectra and by comparison with parent molecule fragmentation pathways. The major transformation process for lincomycin is hydroxylation either at N-alkyl side chain or at the pyrrolidine moiety. In addition, oxidation/reduction, demethylation or cleavage of pyranose ring occurs. Based on this information and additional assessment of profiles over time of formation/disappearance of each species, it was possible to recognize the transformation pathways followed by the drug.

Abstract
This paper deals with the photocatalytic transformation of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET), one of the most widespread and efficient mosquito repellents, under simulated solar irradiation using titanium dioxide as the photocatalytic source of oxidizing species. The investigation involved monitoring of the DEET decomposition, the identification of intermediate compounds and the assessment of mineralization. High-resolution mass spectrometry was employed to assess the evolution of the photocatalyzed process over time. Fifty-one main species were identified after DEET transformation. Several isomeric species were formed and were characterized by analyzing MS and MS(n) spectra in full, and by comparison with parent molecule fragmentation pathways. In the DEET molecule, the initial transformation involved mono- and polyhydroxylation followed by oxidation of the alcohol groups, cleavage of the alkyl chains or ring opening. All these intermediates are easily degraded and DEET is completely mineralized after 4 h of irradiation. Microtox bioassay (Vibrio fischeri) was employed to evaluate the ecotoxicity of solutions treated by photocatalysis.

Abstract
Donkey's milk (DM) has recently aroused scientific interest, above all among paediatric allergologists. A deeper knowledge of both proteins and fats in donkey's milk is necessary to evaluate the immunological, physiological and nutritional properties. By using the most refined techniques for fatty acids analysis, the paper offers a detailed comparative analysis of the lipid fractions of DM as well as of human and cow milk, also indicating the distribution of fatty-acid moieties among sn-1/3 and sn-2 positions of the glycerol backbone. In DM the position of fatty acids on glycerol backbone, above all of long chain saturated fatty acids, is very similar to that of human milk: this fact, in conjunction with the relatively high contents of medium-chain triglycerides, makes the lipids in DM, through quantitatively reduced, highly bioavailable. The high PUFA n-3 content of donkey's milk, and especially its low n-6/n-3 ratio, acquires particular interest in subjects affected by cow's milk protein allergy. Whole DM might also constitute the basis for formulas suitable for subjects in the first year of life.

Abstract
The paper deals with the photocatalytic transformation of two antibacterial agents, ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin, under simulated solar irradiation using titanium dioxide as photocatalyst. The investigation involved monitoring decomposition of the drugs, identifying intermediate compounds, assessing mineralization, and evaluating the toxicity of drug derivatives. High-resolution mass spectrometry was employed to assess evolution of the photocatalyzed process over time. Respectively 15 and 8 main species were identified after transformation of ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. Through the full analysis of MS and MSn spectra and a comparison with parent drug fragmentation pathways, the different isomers were characterized. In the ofloxacin molecule, the initial transformation attacks are confined to the piperazine moiety and to the methyl groups, while the fluoroquinolone core is unmodified. Conversely, ciprofloxacin degradation involves two parts of the molecule: the piperazinic moiety and the quinolone moiety. All these intermediates are easily degraded and by 4 h mineralization is complete. Toxicity assays using Vibrio fischeri prove that neither ciprofloxacin nor its intermediates exhibit acute toxicity. In ofloxacin the secondary degradation products exhibit toxicity; a correlation exists between the evolution of the intermediate compounds and the toxicity connected to them.

Abstract
We have studied the photocatalytic transformation of atenolol, 4-[2-hydroxy-3-[(1-methyl)amino]propoxyl]benzeneacetamide, a cardioselective beta-blocking agent used to treat cardiac arrhythmias and hypertension, under simulated solar irradiation using titanium dioxide as photocatalyst. The investigation involved monitoring drug decomposition, identifying intermediate compounds, assessing mineralization, and evaluating toxicity. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) via an electrospray ionization (ESI) interface was a powerful tool for the identification and measurement of the degradation products; 23 main species were identified. Intermediates were characterized through their chromatographic behavior and evolution kinetics, coupled with accurate mass information. Through the full analysis of MS and MS(n) spectra and a comparison with parent drug fragmentation pathways, the diverse isomers were characterized. Neither atenolol nor the intermediates formed exhibit acute toxicity. All intermediates are easily degraded and no compound identified could withstand 2 h irradiation. Photomineralization of the substrate in terms of carbon mineralization and nitrogen release was rapid and, within 4 h of irradiation, organic nitrogen and carbon were completely mineralized.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds (flavonoids and phenolic acid derivatives) are major active constituents of the resinous fraction of propolis, and also represent its allergenic principles. We have developed a chromatography electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) method to characterise the polyphenolic fraction of propolis rapidly and quali-quantitatively. With precursor ion scanning, selective detection of caffeic esters was easily achieved, confirming the identification of prenyl caffeate, benzyl caffeate and phenylethyl caffeate by comparison with synthetic standards. The ionisation and fragmentation behaviour of the major propolis flavonoids was rationalised and applied to selected real samples. Taken together, the results of this study show that the introduction of precursor ion analysis leads to a significant improvement in the characterisation of the phenolic fraction of propolis, paving the way to the establishment of a better quality control for this important natural remedy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physicochemical alterations of the IgA molecule are supposed to play a pathogenetic role in IgA nephropathy (IgAN). The present study was carried out to analyze the structural variety of O-glycans on the IgA1 hinge region in IgAN. Sera from 9 IgAN patients and 9 healthy controls were individually examined to evaluate the IgA1 content and binding lectins (jacalin and Helix aspersa), using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques. The IgA1 from pooled sera were separated by affinity chromatography (jacalin), and the fragment containing the hinge region was prepared by pyridylethylation and trypsin treatment. The IgA fragments containing the hinge glycopeptide (33-mer hinge peptide core (HP) + O-glycans) were separated by jacalin affinity chromatography. Because we used jacalin, we only analyzed the Gal-3GalNAc residue containing IgA. The molecular weight (MW) of the IgA1 fragments was estimated using an ion trap mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray ion source (ESI/MS). RESULTS IgA1 concentration in pathological sera was higher than in the control serum (p<0.01). Compared with controls, serum IgA1 from IgAN patients showed significantly greater binding to the 2 lectins, jacalin (p<0.01) and Helix aspersa (HA, p<0.001), which are specific for O-linked Gal-beta1,3-GalNAc and GalNAc, respectively. Analyses of pooled sera showed that the number of O-glycosidic chains was comparable in IgAN and normal sera. With regards to the individual residues, we found that IgAN sera contained less sugar and galactose and sialic acid moieties than sera from control subjects, was reduced in IgAN sera, while terminal N-acetylgalactosamine levels were higher when compared with normal serum. CONCLUSIONS Abnormalities of hinge region O-linked glycans were confirmed using advanced spectrometry technology. The pathogenetic implications for aggregation and defective removal of IgA1 are discussed.

Abstract
Salvia divinorum Epling & Játiva-M. is a perennial herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family; its active ingredient, the neoclerodane diterpene salvinorin A, is a psychotropic molecule that produces hallucinations. A comparative evaluation of S. divinorum fresh and dried leaves, S. officinalis fresh leaves, and dried powdered leaves claimed to be S. divinorum was done. HPLC-MS data confirmed the presence of salvinorin A in both S. divinorun leaf extracts and the powdered leaves, whereas no salvinorin A was found in S. officinalis. The non-transcribed spacer (NTS) in the 5S-rRNA gene of all leaf samples and the dried powdered leaves was amplified by PCR using a pair of primers located at the 3' and 5' ends of the coding sequence of 5S-rRNA gene. The resulting PCR products (about 500bp for S. divinorum and 300bp for S. officinalis) were gel purified, subcloned into pGEM-T Easy vector and sequenced. By aligning the isolated nucleotide sequences, great diversities were found in the spacer region of the two species. Specific S. divinorum primers were designed on the sequence of the 5S-rRNA gene spacer region. In addition, a PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was applied using NdeI and TaqI restriction enzymes. An NdeI site, absent in S. officinalis, was found in S. divinorum NTS region at 428-433bp. For TaqI, multiple sites (161-164, 170-173, and 217-220bp) were found in S. officinalis, whereas a unique site was found in S. divinorum (235-238bp). The results of this work show that the combined use of analytical chemical (HPLC-MS) and molecular (DNA fingerprinting) methods lead to the precise and unequivocal identification of S. divinorum.

Abstract
The light-induced degradation of alkylurea derivatives under simulated solar irradiation has been investigated in aqueous solutions containing TiO(2) as a photocatalyst. Herein, we will focus on how the presence of one or more methyl (or ethyl) groups on urea modifies the kinetics of disappearance and influences both the ratio and the extent of the inorganic nitrogen formation caused by different degradation pathways. In the present work, we have elucidated a mechanism for the formation of transformation products of the alkyl derivatives by combining several analytical and spectroscopic procedures and the theoretical simulation of ab initio calculations. In all cases, N-demethylation represents only a secondary pathway, while the main transformation proceeds through an unexpected cyclization, involving (m)ethyl- and di(m)ethylureas with the formation of (methyl)amino-2,3-dihydro-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-one as the principal intermediate of the reaction (with a yield of 60 %). This behaviour is rather unexpected and in contrast with the typical photocatalyzed transformation pathways, which proceed through the formation of more simple structures.

Abstract
Salvinorin A is the most potent naturally occurring hallucinogen known and rivals synthetic LSD in potency. Structurally it belongs to the neoclerodane diterpenoids, and it is the only known non-nitrogenous kappa-opioid-selective agonist. Salvia divinorum (Diviner's sage) is a member of the mint family that was used in ancient Mexican traditional practices. Today it is widely cultivated in Europe as a recreational marijuana substitute; it is illegal to buy, sell or possess the plant or the active principle in some countries. Six different salvinorins and three divinatorins have been isolated from Salvia divinorum leaves. The ion fragmentation, separation and quantitation of these diterpenes by liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization multistage mass spectrometry (LC/ESI-MS(n)) are described. The importance of LC in herbal extract determination and the chemical diagnostic power of MS(n) in the analysis of classes of natural organic products are discussed.

Abstract
Semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) mimic passive diffusive transport of bioavailable hydrophobic organic compounds through biological membranes and their partitioning between lipids and environmental levels. Our study was developed on a surface water treatment plant based in Turin, Northern Italy. The investigated plant treats Po River surface water and it supplies about 20% of the drinking water required by Turin city (about one million inhabitants). Surface water (input) and drinking water (output) were monitored with SPMDs from October 2001 to January 2004, over a period of 30 days. The contaminant residues, monthly extracted from SPMDs by dialysis in organic solvent, were tested with the Microtox acute toxic test and with the Ames mutagenicity test. Same extracts were also analyzed with gas chromatography--mass spectrometry technique in order to characterise the organic pollutants sampled, especially Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). Although the PAHs mean concentration is about one hundred times lower in the output samples, the mean toxic units are similar in drinking and surface water. Our data indicate that the SPMD is a suitable tool to assess the possible toxicity in drinking water.

Abstract
This study deals with the biodegradation of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)s present in a soil contaminated by soot waste, characterised by a total PAHs content in the 200 mg kg(-1) range. A challenging characteristic of the waste soil treated was its high alkalinity, with a pH of about 12.8. The waste came from a soot-contaminated area located in the industrial zone of Porto Marghera, Venice (Italy). The biodegradation process employed was the composting of the waste with sewage sludge and yard waste. The process was carried out on a pilot scale using a closed tank with forced aeration for a period of 60 days, followed by 70 days with natural aeration. The time evolution of the process was monitored by following the time change in the concentration of the 16 US-EPA PAHs, as well as temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, C and N contents. Also phytotoxicity parameters, such as the growth and respiration indexes, were monitored. An induction time of about 30 days was observed, which corresponded to the time required before observing a significant self-drop in the waste pH and an increase in mass temperature. Afterward, a progressive drop in the PAHs concentration was observed, up to reaching after 130 days an overall degradation percentage in the order of 68%. The degradation was more effective on rather low molecular weight PAHs (2-4 rings).

Abstract
Cinosulfuron is a sulfonylurea herbicide largely used in the extensive cultures of flooded rice in North Italy. The degradation of cinosulfuron has been investigated in sterile aqueous solutions at 30 degrees C at different pH values. It was rapidly degraded at acidic pH (half-lives 3, 9 and 43 days at pH 4, 5 and 6, respectively) while the half-life was > 1 year at pH 7 and 9. Two degradation products formed by cleavage of the sulfonylurea bridge were identified by LC-MS. Degradation by selected mixed microbial cultures tested in aerobic and anaerobic conditions was very slow and attributable to chemical hydrolysis due to the acidic pH of the cultural broths. Degradation took place in freshly collected rice field water treated for two years with cinosulfuron but, in this case also, chemical hydrolysis prevailed over microbial degradation. In contrast, in flooded sediment simulating the paddy field environment, the dissipation rate of cinosulfuron was higher than expected from chemical hydrolysis according to the pH of the system, indicating the involvement of soil microflora. Although the herbicide exhibited a reduced affinity for the sediment surfaces demonstrated by the low value of the K(f) Freundlich coefficient (0.87 on a micromolar basis), the rapid dissipation observed in the simulated paddy field should prevent its leaching to ground water.

Abstract
Benzene (B) is a typical micro-pollutant present in air, especially urban air. In this study a possible correlation between personal benzene exposure and S-phenylmercapturic acid (S-PMA) as a biomarker of internal dose was evaluated in a cohort of traffic policemen. The results confirm that S-PMA is significantly correlated to benzene measured in personal air. B and S-PMA were analyzed considering seasonality, work quarters, time spent indoors, outdoors, and directing traffic, but no significant differences were recorded.
