Introduction
Hemodynamic overload induces pathological remodeling of the left ventricle (LV) and eventually heart failure (HF). The two types of chronic hemodynamic stress, namely pressure overload (PO) and volume overload (VO) evoke characteristically different functional and structural alterations in the myocardium. Nevertheless, whether PO- and VO-induced HF are also associated with distinct LV proteomic alterations has not been investigated yet.
Aim
Hence, we thought to perform a proteomic analysis on LV myocardial samples from rat models of PO- and VO-induced HF.
Methods
PO–induced HF was evoked by transverse aortic constriction (TAC). VO–induced HF was established by creating an aortocaval fistula (ACF). Age-matched sham-operated animals served as controls for TAC (ShamT) and ACF (ShamA), respectively. Pressure-volume (P-V) analysis, echocardiography, histology and quantitative real-time PCR were carried out to provide a detailed characterization of the two HF models. Peptides obtained via the digestion of myocardial proteins with trypsin and LysC were labeled with isobaric tags (TMT16) and measured with LC-MS/MS in a bottom-up explorative proteomic approach. Differential expression and gene ontology enrichment analysis (GO:BP) was carried out on summarized protein reporter ion intensities.
Results
In both the TAC and ACF groups, presence of typical signs and symptoms of HF (dyspnea at rest, fatigue, ascites) increased lung-to-tibial length ratio and elevated LV natriuretic peptide mRNA expression levels confirmed the development of advanced HF. Furthermore, the TAC model was associated with massive wall thickening, concentric LV hypertrophy (LVH), marked interstitial fibrosis and substantially impaired active relaxation and passive filling (slope of end-diastolic P-V relationship: 0.103±0.015 vs. 0.023±0.003mmHg/μl, TAC vs. ShamT, P<0.001). In contrast, the ACF model was predominantly characterized by LV dilatation, eccentric LVH, moderate fibrosis and severely reduced LV contractility (slope of end-systolic P-V relationship: 0.5±0.1 vs. 2.3±0.3mmHg/μl, ACF vs. ShamA, P<0.001). Proteomic analysis revealed that out of the 4691 identified and quantified proteins, 1404 and 913 have shown upregulation, while 1359 and 886 downregulation in the TAC and ACF groups respectively compared to their corresponding sham groups. GO:BP analysis has indicated that the downregulation of mitochondrion organization, ATP metabolic processes and oxidative phosphorylation and the upregulation of actin cytoskeleton organization were the most profound alterations in the TAC model. In contrast, the ACF model was associated with robust downregulation of fatty acid oxidation and upregulation of endocytosis, defense and immune response on the proteomic level.
Conclusions
PO and VO-induced advanced HF are not only associated with characteristically different functional and structural remodeling but also with distinct LV proteomic alterations.

Introduction
Growing body of evidence suggests that distinct alterations in myocardial microRNA (miRNA) expression contribute to pressure overload (PO)-induced pathological cardiac remodeling. Nevertheless, it is still under intense investigation whether the changes in miRNA expression patterns are also associated with the decompensation of LV systolic function in case of PO-evoked LV hypertrophy (LVH). Hence, we aimed to characterize miRNA expression in PO-induced LVH with and without systolic heart failure (HF).
Methods
PO was evoked by abdominal aortic banding (AB) in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Age-matched, sham-operated animals served as controls. Functional and morphological alterations were assessed by echocardiography and histology. At the end of the experimental period, rats in the AB group were subcategorized based on ejection fraction [EF] into ABLVH (EF>40%) and ABHF groups (EF<40%). Global miRNA expression profiling was performed using next generation sequencing. Bioinformatics analysis was carried out to predict miRNA-target interactions. Expression of selected target genes was measured by qRT-PCR.
Results
Increased heart weight-to-tibial length, LV mass and fibrosis confirmed the development of pathological LVH in both the ABLVH and ABHF groups. Nevertheless, increased lung weight-to-tibial length, chamber dilatation and severely reduced EF was noted only in the ABHF and not in the ABLVH, when compared to the sham group. 50 miRNA showed different expression in the ABHF compared to the ABLVH group. Based on the altered gene expression profile, in silico bioinformatics analysis predicted several target genes. Among them, reduced mRNA expression level of Fmr1 (FMRP translational regulator 1), Zfpm2 (zinc finger protein, multitype 2), Wasl (WASP like actin nucleation promoting factor), Ets1 (ETS proto-oncogene 1) and Atg16l1 (Autophagy Related 16 Like 1) was confirmed in ABHF compared to ABLVH.
Conclusions
Decompensation of systolic function in PO-induced LVH is associated with unique miRNA profile leading to specific regulation of gene expression.

Abstract
A method is presented for the swift reconstruction of electron density profiles measured by the alkali beam emission spectroscopy. It is based on the linearization of the governing rate equations and leads to a direct calculation for obtaining the profiles. The uncertainties of the measurement are incorporated into the problem through the utilization of Tikhonov regularization and the generalized least squares method. An approximation for the uncertainty of the reconstructed density data is calculated as well. The applicability of the method is tested against both simulated and real experimental results of the W7-X stellarator.

Introduction
MicroRNAs (miRNA) are short, single-stranded non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression on the post-transcriptional level. Dysregulation of distinct miRNAs has been found to contribute to the development of chronic heart failure (CHF). However, whether distinct types of CHF are associated with different miRNA expression patterns is debated.
Aim
To characterize left ventricular (LV) miRNA expression in rat models of pressure overload (PO) versus volume overload (VO)-induced CHF.
Methods
Transverse aortic constriction (TAC) was performed to evoke PO-induced CHF. Aortocaval fistula (ACF) was created to establish VO-induced CHF. Age-matched sham-operated rats served as controls for TAC (ShamT) and ACF (ShamA), respectively. Pressure-volume analysis, echocardiography, histology and quantitative real-time PCR were carried out to assess alterations of the LV. Global miRNA expression profiling was performed using Nanostring technology. Bioinformatics analysis of differentially expressed miRNAs was also carried out to predict relevant miRNA-target interactions.
Results
Reduced LV systolic function (ejection fraction: 38±5 vs. 65±2% TAC vs. ShamT, 55±3 vs. 67±3%, ACF vs. ShamA, P<0.01) as well as elevated myocardial B-type natriuretic peptide and increased β-to-α myosin heavy chain gene expression confirmed the development of pathological remodeling and CHF in both models. Nevertheless, characteristic differences could be observed in LV morphology and ultrastructure. Accordingly, the TAC model was associated with robustly increased wall thickness, concentric LV hypertrophy and marked fibrotic remodeling. On the contrary, LV dilatation, eccentric LV hypertrophy and moderate fibrosis were the main morphometric findings in the ACF model. A group of miRNA (rno-miR-130a, 132, 199a-5p, 21, 210, 27b, 326) showed similar alterations in both phenotypes of CHF. However, other miRNAs demonstrated unique (specific to TAC: rno-miR-148b-3p, 150, 199a-3p, 203, 23b, 27b, let-7e; specific to ACF: rno-miR-140, 142-3p, 17-5p, 195, 20a, 204, 214, 27a, 29b, 322, 365, 425, 450a, let-7i) LV expressional changes in distinct phenotypes of CHF. In silico bioinformatics analysis revealed that the altered miRNA expression pattern predominantly controls the cardiac neural crest cell development, the inositol-phosphate pathway and the expression of microtubules-binding proteins. In contrast, alterations in the expression of genes responsible for redox state and epithelial-mesenchymal transition were modified only in the ACF group. Despite of the different signaling cascades, expression of Arhgap12 (Rho GTPase activating protein 12) was predicted to be strongly inhibited in both CHF models.
Conclusions
PO and VO-induced CHF are associated with unique miRNA expression patterns, which drive different signaling pathways. miRNA-controlled downregulation of Arhgap12 might represent a common feature in both phenotypes of CHF.

Abstract
The modeling of nano-electronic devices is a cost-effective approach for optimizing the semiconductor device performance and for guiding the fabrication technology. In this paper, we present the capabilities of the new flexible multi-scale nano TCAD simulation software called Nano-Electronic Simulation Software (NESS). NESS is designed to study the charge transport in contemporary and novel ultra-scaled semiconductor devices. In order to simulate the charge transport in such ultra-scaled devices with complex architectures and design, we have developed numerous simulation modules based on various simulation approaches. Currently, NESS contains a drift-diffusion, Kubo–Greenwood, and non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) modules. All modules are numerical solvers which are implemented in the C++ programming language, and all of them are linked and solved self-consistently with the Poisson equation. Here, we have deployed some of those modules to showcase the capabilities of NESS to simulate advanced nano-scale semiconductor devices. The devices simulated in this paper are chosen to represent the current state-of-the-art and future technologies where quantum mechanical effects play an important role. Our examples include ultra-scaled nanowire transistors, tunnel transistors, resonant tunneling diodes, and negative capacitance transistors. Our results show that NESS is a robust, fast, and reliable simulation platform which can accurately predict and describe the underlying physics in novel ultra-scaled electronic devices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Urban Medicaid enrollees with opioid use disorder often rely on public transit to reach buprenorphine prescribers. Research has not shown whether public transit provides this population with adequate geographic access to buprenorphine prescribers. We examined travel times to buprenorphine prescribers by car and public transit in urban areas, and determined whether car-based Medicaid regulatory standards produce their intended geographic coverage. METHODS We obtained data for this study from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Buprenorphine Practitioner Locator, Microsoft Bing Maps, and the American Community Survey. We examined four urban counties at the centers of the metropolitan statistical areas with the highest 2017 accidental drug poisoning death rates: Kanawha, WV; Montgomery, OH; Philadelphia, PA; and St. Louis City, MO. These counties comprised 696 census tracts representing 1,038,564 households. We calculated travel times from each census tract center to the nearest buprenorphine prescribers by car and public transit, and compared that to 30-min regulatory standards and by whether census tracts had below median levels of car access. We calculated Global Moran's I statistics to determine whether spatial clustering was present among census tracts with limited access to buprenorphine prescribers. RESULTS Households in all but two census tracts could access a buprenorphine prescriber within 30 min by car. However, households in 12.1% (84) of census tracts could not do so by public transit. The correlation between car- and public transit-based travel times to the nearest buprenorphine prescriber was 0.11 (95% CI = 0.07-0.22). More than 15% (47,918) of households in the two less densely populated counties could not travel to the nearest prescriber in 30 min and resided in census tracts where access to cars was relatively low. There was no evidence of spatial clustering among census tracts with public transit travel times exceeding 30 min, or among census tracts with public transit travel times exceeding 30 min and below median values of access to cars. CONCLUSIONS Geographic access to buprenorphine prescribers is overestimated by regulatory standards that apply car-based travel time estimates, which are a weak proxy for public transit-based travel times. Since geographic areas with limited access to buprenorphine prescribers do not tend to cluster near one another, individually targeted interventions may be necessary to improve buprenorphine access and utilization.

Introduction
Several studies examined the effects of regular training in peripubertic athletes’ heart, focusing on the left ventricle (LV). Their normal LV values are showing significant differences from adult athletes. In contrast, there are no specific normal ranges of the diastolic function and the right ventricular (RV) parameters in this age group. Moreover, the results of the latest studies are inconsistent through the different inclusion criteria and influencing factors.
Purpose, methods: The purpose of our study was to examine the specific diastolic and RV parameters of peripubertic athletes and compare them to the available normal values of adult athletes or healthy age-matched non-athletes. Furthermore, we were looking for the effects of the main influencing factors [lean body mass (LBM), body surface area (BSA), age, gender, training time, sporting discipline] on the echocardiographic parameters. 146 children and young adults (athletes, triathletes, basketball players, soccer players) were included between the age of 9 and 20 years (119 males, 27 females, 16,1 ±2,55 years). Specific 2D and tissue Doppler echocardiographic examinations were performed with one-lead continuous ECG gating.
Results
Examining the LV we did not find any significant differences comparing to the latest normal LV values by age. Significant positive correlation was found between the LV parameters, age and LBM. In comparison to adult athletes’ diastolic parameters, significantly (p< 0,001) higher E, lower A values and higher E/A ratio was detected. However, we found significantly (p< 0,001) higher lateral, septal and average e’ values and significantly (p< 0,001) lower E/e’ ratio compared to both reference groups. Therefore, the supernormal diastolic values of our athletes exceeded not only the diastolic performance of the age-matched non-athletes but also the adult professionals. Moreover, significantly (p< 0,001) lower structural and functional RV parameters were detected in the young athletes than the adult ones. In comparison to the peripubertic non-athletes significantly (p< 0,001) higher structural parameters, higher tricuspid S wave, RV end-diastolic and end-systolic area values were found. Contrary, there was no differences between the tricuspid annular plan excursion (TAPSE) values. Based on multivariate analysis we found remarkable correlation (r= 0,527, p< 0,001) between the diastolic or RV parameters and the common effect of the main influencing factors: LBM, BSA, age and training time.
Conclusion
There are no clearly defined normal values of diastolic and RV parameters in peripubertic athletes, however we also detected remarkable left and right ventricular changes in this young age group. Well-defined cut-off values should be applied to differentiate pathological conditions. The main influencing factors of the echocardiographic parameters are LBM, BSA, age and training time having additive effects on the cardiac adaptation.

Abstract
Atomic beam probe is an extension of the routinely used beam emission spectroscopy diagnostic for the plasma edge current fluctuation measurement at magnetically confined plasmas. Beam atoms ionized by the plasma are directed to a curved trajectory by the magnetic field and may be detected close to the wall of the device. The arrival location and current distribution of the ions carry information about the plasma current distribution, the density profile, and the electric potential in the plasma edge. This paper describes a micro-Faraday cup matrix detector for the measurement of the few microampere ion current distribution close to the plasma edge. The device implements a shallow Faraday cup matrix, produced by printed-circuit board technology. Secondary electrons induced by the plasma radiation and the ion bombardment are basically confined into the cups by the tokamak magnetic field. Additionally, a double mask is installed in the front face to limit the ion influx into the cups and supplement secondary electron suppression. The setup was tested in detail using a lithium ion beam in the laboratory. Switching time, cross talk, and fluctuation sensitivity test results in the lab setup are presented along with the detector setup to be installed at the COMPASS tokamak.

Abstract
Diagnosing the density profile at the edge of high temperature fusion plasmas by an accelerated lithium beam is a known technique since decades. By knowledge of the relevant atomic physics rate coefficients, the plasma electron density profile can be calculated from the relatively calibrated light profile along the beam. Several additional possibilities have already been demonstrated: Charge Exchange Resonance Spectroscopy (CXRS) for ion temperature/flow and Zeeman polarimetry for edge plasma current; therefore the Li-beam diagnostic offers a wealth of information at the plasma edge. The weaknesses of the method are the relatively faint light signal, background light, and technical difficulties of the beam injector which usually seriously limit the applicability. In this talk, we present systematic developments in alkali-beam diagnostics (Li, Na) for the injector and the observation system and detectors which resulted in strongly increased capabilities. Advanced systems have been built, and microsecond scale density profile, turbulence, and zonal flow measurement have been demonstrated. A novel edge current measurement technique has also been designed, and components have been tested with potential microsecond-scale time resolution. Additional possibilities of these advanced systems for spectral measurements (CXRS and various Zeeman schemes) are also discussed.

Abstract
Interface roughness scattering (IRS) is one of the major scattering mechanisms limiting the performance of non-planar multi-gate transistors, like Fin field-effect transistors (FETs). Here, two physical models (Ando's and multi-sub-band) of electron scattering with the interface roughness induced potential are investigated using an in-house built 3D finite element ensemble Monte Carlo simulation toolbox including parameter-free 2D Schrödinger equation quantum correction that handles all relevant scattering mechanisms within highly non-equilibrium carrier transport. Moreover, we predict the effect of IRS on performance of FinFETs with realistic channel cross-section shapes with respect to the IRS correlation length (Λ) and RMS height ([Formula: see text]). The simulations of the n-type SOI FinFETs with the multi-sub-band IRS model shows its very strong effect on electron transport in the device channel compared to the Ando's model. We have also found that the FinFETs are strongly affected by the IRS in the ON-region. The limiting effect of the IRS significantly increases as the Fin width is reduced. The FinFETs with [Formula: see text] channel orientation are affected more by the IRS than those with the [Formula: see text] crystal orientation. Finally, Λ and [Formula: see text] are shown to affect the device performance similarly. A change in values by 30% (Λ) or [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) results in an increase (decrease) of up to [Formula: see text] in the drive current.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) in cancer cells can occur due to mutations (germline or sporadic), methylation or other epigenetic causes. HRD leads to a defect in the conservative, error-free DNA repair mechanism and is associated with enhanced susceptibility to DNA targeting chemotherapy. Currently functional HRD assays are not broadly available for clinical use. Many of the HRD assays used in the experimental setting require fresh frozen tissue for optimal results, or require specialized expertise to interpret the results. We evaluated an immunohistochemical (IHC) assay using formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue to measure protein expression of Rad51 and geminin, a cell proliferation marker, to assess HRD in breast cancer cell line models and clinical breast cancer samples. We hypothesize that Rad51, which is involved in the later stages of HR, can serve as a functional marker of HRD.
Methods: The MCF-7 human breast cancer cell line was used as a model with intact HR. Western blotting of total cell lysates from cells grown in culture was performed to confirm HR response following treatment with DNA damaging chemotherapeutic agents, cisplatin and doxorubicin. Paclitaxel, a microtubule targeting agent, was used as a negative control. Mice with MCF-7 xenograft tumors were also treated with cisplatin, or doxorubicin at two dose levels (low and high) and various time points post treatment to assess the dose and time response to HR markers. Tumors from mice treated with paclitaxel were used as a negative control. Xenograft tumors were fixed and analyzed by IHC using an antibody specific for total Rad51 and geminin expression. DNA damage was also assessed in a portion of the tumor using a pulse gel electrophoresis assay. We also analyzed FFPE breast cancer clinical samples from patients with BRCA1 mutations for Rad51 and geminin expression.
Results: In MCF-7 grown in vitro, total Rad51 was elevated as soon as 4 hours following exposure to doxorubicin and cisplatin, but not in response to paclitaxel treatment. In xenograft tumors, baseline Rad51 and geminin expression were relatively high illustrating proficient HR in an actively proliferating tumor model. Rad51 expression increased post treatment with cisplatin and doxorubicin as early as 6hrs and peaked at 16-24hrs. Geminin expression correlated well with expression of Rad51 at baseline and in time response to treatment. Pulse gel electrophoresis in paired tumor samples confirmed DNA damage was occurring compared to vehicle control treated tumors. However, this technique did not show a strong dose or time response. Five breast tumors from patients with known BRCA1 mutations were stained for Rad51 and geminin expression. High geminin expression and low Rad51 expression was noted in the majority of these tumors.
Conclusions: An IHC assay using FFPE tissue to measure Rad51/geminin is a promising method to assess HRD in breast cancer. Further analytical and clinical validation of this approach is ongoing.

Abstract
We show that the critical exponent of a quantum phase transition in a damped-driven open system is determined by the spectral density function of the reservoir. We consider the open-system variant of the Dicke model, where the driven boson mode and also the large N spin couple to independent reservoirs at zero temperature. The critical exponent, which is 1 if there is no spin-bath coupling, decreases below 1 when the spin couples to a sub-Ohmic reservoir.

Abstract
We introduce an upgraded version of a tomographical system which is built up from Absolute Extreme Ultraviolet-type (AXUV) detectors and has been installed on the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV). The system is suitable for the investigation of fast radiative processes usually observed in magnetically confined high-temperature plasmas. The upgrade consists in the detector protection by movable shutters, some modifications to correct original design errors and the improvement in the data evaluation techniques. The short-term sensitivity degradation of the detectors, which is caused by the plasma radiation itself, has been monitored and found to be severe. The results provided by the system are consistent with the measurements obtained with the usual plasma radiation diagnostics installed on TCV. Additionally, the coupling between core plasma radiation and plasma-wall interaction is revealed. This was impossible with other available diagnostics on TCV.

Abstract
Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) is a neuropeptide, exerting diverse effects. One of its frequently examined functions is cell protection, which is achieved mainly via inhibiting apoptotic, inflammatory and oxidative processes. All its three receptors (PAC1, VPAC1, VPAC2) are expressed in the kidney and PACAP has been shown to have protective effects against different renal pathologies. Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause of end stage renal disease. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible ameliorative effect of PACAP in streptozotocin-induced diabetic nephropathy and to evaluate its anti-inflammatory effect in this model. Diabetes was induced by a single intravenous injection of streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) in male Wistar rats. PACAP-treated animals were administered ip. 20 μg PACAP every second day, while untreated animals were given vehicle. Kidneys were removed after 8-weeks survival. Besides the complex histological analysis (glomerular PAS positive area/glomerulus area, tubular damage, arteriolar hyalinosis), expression of several cytokines was evaluated by cytokine array and Luminex assay. Histological analysis revealed severe diabetic changes in kidneys of control diabetic animals (glomerular PAS-positive area expansion, tubular damage, Armanni-Ebstein phenomenon). PACAP treatment significantly diminished the damage. Diabetic kidneys showed significant cytokine activation compared to their healthy controls. PACAP was effective in downregulation of several cytokines including CINC-1, TIMP-1, LIX, MIG, s-ICAM. To conclude, PACAP is effective in ameliorating diabetic nephropathy at least partly through its well-known anti-inflammatory effect. These results raise the opportunity for the use of PACAP as a possible therapeutic or preventive method in treating the complications of diabetes.

Abstract
Four-vessel occlusion (4VO), a frequently used model of global cerebral ischemia in rats, results in a dysfunction in wide brain areas, including the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. However, there are pronounced differences in response to global ischemia between the laboratory rat strains used in these studies. In the present work, the immediate acute effects of 4VO-induced global ischemia on the spontaneous electrocorticogram (ECoG) signals were analyzed in Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats. The ECoG was isoelectric during the 10 min of global cerebral ischemia in Wistar rats and the first burst (FB) was seen 10-13 min after the start of reperfusion. In Sprague-Dawley rats, the FB was detected immediately after the start of 4VO or a few seconds later. The burst suppression ratio (BSR) in Wistar rats decreased to 45% in 5 min after FB, and after 25 min it was approximately 40%. In Sprague-Dawley rats, the BSR was 55% immediately after the FB and it decreased steeply to reach 0% by 10 min. There was also a significant difference between the two strains in the frequency composition of the ECoG pattern. The power spectral densities of the two strains differed virtually throughout the post-ischemic state. The histological results (Evans Blue, Cresyl Violet and Fluoro Jade C stainings) supplemented the electrophysiological data: the neuronal damage in the CA1 pyramids in Wistar rats was severe, whereas in the Sprague-Dawley animals it was only partial. These observations clearly demonstrate that the use of different rat strains (e.g. Wistar vs. Sprague-Dawley) can be a source of considerable variability in the results of acute experiments on global ischemia and it is important that the laboratory rats used in such experiments should be carefully chosen.

Abstract
Action potential voltage-clamp (APVC) is a technique to visualize the profile of various currents during the cardiac action potential. This review summarizes potential applications and limitations of APVC, the properties of the most important ion currents in nodal, atrial, and ventricular cardiomyocytes. Accordingly, the profiles ("fingerprints") of the major ion currents in canine ventricular myocytes, i.e. in cells of a species having action potential morphology and set of underlying ion currents very similar to those found in the human heart, are discussed in details. The degree of selectivity of various compounds, which is known to be a critical property of drugs used in APVC experiments, is overviewed. Thus the specificity of agents known to block sodium (tetrodotoxin, saxitoxin), potassium (chromanol 293B, HMR 1556, E-4031, dofetilide, sotalol, 4-aminopyridine, BaCl(2)), calcium (nifedipine, nisolpidine, nicardipine, diltiazem, verapamil, gallopamil), and chloride (anthracene-9-carboxylic acid, DIDS) channels, the inhibitor of the sodium-calcium exchanger (SEA0400), and the activator of sodium current (veratridine) are accordingly discussed. Based on a theory explaining how calcium current inhibitors block calcium channels, the structural comparison of the studied substances usually confirmed the results of the literature. Using these predictions, a hypothetical super-selective calcium channel inhibitor structure was designed. APVC is a valuable tool not only for studying the selectivity of the known ion channel blockers, but is also suitable for safety studies to exclude cardiac ion channel actions of any agent under development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Intravenous lipid emulsions may contribute to the development of total parenteral nutrition (TPN)--induced hepatobiliary complications. METHODS In a prospective, randomised setting the authors compared the short-term hepatic effects of medium-chain triglycerides/short-chain triglycerides (MCT/LCT) physical mixture with a four-component intravenous (i.v.) lipid emulsion (LCT, MCT, Olive-oil and Fish-oil) in patients undergoing elective gastrointestial surgery during the early postoperative period. RESULTS The authors demonstrated that total and conjugated bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate amino transferase and cholinesterase did not change significantly during the 5-days observation period. In contrast to this, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activity increased by 2,4 times during 5-days therapy with the lipid emulsions mentioned above (SMOF lipid: 21,9 to 52,9 U/L, Lipofundin: from 32,5 to 79,6 U/L). CONCLUSION during a 4-days administration hepatic effect of the intravenous lipid emulsions did not differ significantly. The changes in enzyme levels confirm the cholestatic type of hepatobiliary deviations without clinical impact on short-term TPN therapy.

Abstract
We show that the motion of a laser-driven Bose-Einstein condensate in a high-finesse optical cavity realizes the spin-boson Dicke model. The quantum phase transition of the Dicke model from the normal to the superradiant phase corresponds to the self-organization of atoms from the homogeneous into a periodically patterned distribution above a critical driving strength. The fragility of the ground state due to photon measurement induced backaction is calculated.

For a Bose-Einstein condensate in a stable optical resonator, the excess noise effect amounts to a significant depletion on long time scales.

Abstract
AIM To describe the detailed phenotypes of a multi-generation family affected by autosomal dominant cone-rod dystrophy (adCRD) and characterised by marked intrafamilial heterogeneity, due to a novel frameshift mutation in the CRX gene. METHODS Six affected and two unaffected family members underwent detailed ophthalmological examination as well as psychophysical and electrophysiological testing. Mutation screening of the CRX gene and segregation analysis were performed in 14 family members from three generations. RESULTS Clinical examination of six available mutation carriers showed marked phenotypic heterogeneity, presenting with a reduced cone electroretinogram (ERG) and normal rod ERG in one family branch and a negative ERG in the other as the most striking feature. Genetic screening identified a novel mutation in the CRX gene, c.636delC, that independently segregates with the disease in both branches of the family. CONCLUSION The authors identified a novel disease causing mutation in the CRX gene associated with adCRD. Furthermore, we show here for the first time the coexistence of a reduced cone and a negative ERG component in different individuals of the same family, all affected by the same mutation.

Abstract
Interactions between individuals such as hosts and pathogens are often characterized by substantial phenotypic plasticity. Pathogens sometimes alter their exploitation strategies in response to defensive strategies adopted by their host and vice versa. Nevertheless, most game-theoretic models developed to explain the evolution of pathogen and host characteristics assume that no such plasticity occurs. Allowing for phenotypic plasticity in these models is difficult because one must focus on the evolution of pathogen and host reaction norms, and then allow for the potentially indefinite reciprocal changes in pathogen and host behaviour that occur during an infection as a result of their interacting reaction norms. Here, we begin to address these issues for a simple host-pathogen system in which the pathogen exhibits a level of virulence and the host exhibits a level of immune clearance. We find, quite generally, that plasticity promotes the evolution of higher levels of cooperation, in this case leading to reduced levels of both virulence and clearance.

Abstract
Neuronal activity might be measured by regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) as there is a close relationship between neuronal activity and rCBF changes. In order to study the hemispheric dominance for language and the plasticity of language networks by measuring the rCBF rest and language activation SPECT studies were performed in the presurgical evaluation of ten right-handed and two left handed patients with brain lesions of the dominant hemisphere. A special group of hemisphere-specific neuropsychologic tasks were used for activation, after a proper psychologic conditioning. The rCBF results were calculated by comparing the rest and activation SPECT data using a special regions of interest program and asymmetry index (AI). We compared the results of speech-activation to the results of clinical, morphological (MRI), and postoperative data. In controls, significant activation was found in Brodmann's area 44 and 45, contralateral cerebellum, superior middle and posterior temporal gyrus. In patients, additional regions of activation were seen in contralateral frontal and temporal regions, and in ipsilateral temporal region. AIs of the cerebellum demonstrated a negative correlation with hemispheric dominance for language. In conclusion, significant changes in rCBF in or adjacent to the eloquent areas with various patterns of rCBF changes of the additional regions demonstrate the close relationship between neuronal activity and cerebral blood flow, that can be measured by SPECT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We have developed a method for selecting erythroblasts from blood, the first step toward identifying fetal cells in maternal blood for diagnostic purposes. Because the selection method results in a large number of positive cells, we needed to develop new methods to deposit the cells onto slides and to modify in situ hybridization procedures to enable detection of fetal cells. METHODS We utilized Nunc flaskettes to increase the slide surface area available for cell deposition. The ability of erythroid lineage cells to adhere to several surface modifications was examined. In situ hybridization methods were tested to find the best approach that is compatible with these cell preparations. RESULTS The best glass slide coating for erythroid cells was found to be an antibody to glycophorin A, a red cell surface antigen. We were able to get excellent in situ hybridization signals in cells on flaskettes by modifying fixation and pretreatment parameters. CONCLUSIONS The methods described here appear to be the best way of attaching a large number of erythroid lineage cells to slides and of detecting them by in situ hybridization.

Abstract
We describe here the cloning and characterization of the human gene ERMAP, identified by subtractive hybridization using early and late gestation human fetal liver. By in situ hybridization, we found human ERMAP to be expressed not only in erythoid cells in fetal liver and adult bone marrow, but also in reticulocytes and circulating erythroblasts in 8-12-week fetal cord blood. The human ERMAP protein is predicted to contain a transmembrane segment and one extracellular immunoglobulin fold (IgV). The cytoplasmic region contains a highly conserved B30.2 motif, multiple consensus sequences for kinases, and post-Golgi sorting signals. The protein was localized to the cell surface as shown by an antibody specific for a peptide predicted from the IgV fold. The amino acid sequence of human ERMAP is highly homologous with that of mouse ERMAP, but differs in the number of extracellular immunoglobulin folds. Human ERMAP represents a new unique member of the rapidly growing B30.2 domain proteins.
