Abstract
The nature of linear photophysical and nonlinear optical properties of a new squaraine derivative 2,4-bis[4-(azetidyl)-2-hydroxyphenyl]squaraine (1) with efficient near-infrared (NIR) emission was comprehensively analyzed based on spectroscopic, photochemical, and two-photon absorption (2PA) measurements, along with quantum chemical analysis. The steady-state absorption, fluorescence, and excitation anisotropy spectra of 1 and its fluorescence emission lifetimes revealed the multiple aspects of the electronic structure of 1, including the relative orientations of the main transition dipoles, effective rotational volumes in solvents of different polarities, and a maximum molar extinction of 1.35 × 10-5 M-1·cm-1, which is unusually small for similar symmetric squaraines. The degenerate 2PA spectrum of 1 was obtained over a broad spectral range under femtosecond excitation, using standard open-aperture Z-scan and two-photon induced fluorescence methods, revealing maximum 2PA cross sections of ∼400 GM. Squaraine 1 exhibited efficient superluminescence emission in the polar solvent (dichloromethane) at room temperature under femtosecond pumping conditions. Quantum chemical analysis of the electronic structure of 1 was performed using the DFT/TD-DFT level of theory and found to be in good agreement with experimental data. The new squaraine derivative 1 displayed high fluorescence quantum yield, efficient NIR superluminescence, large 2PA cross sections, and high photostability with a photodecomposition quantum yield ∼4 × 10-6, suggesting its potential for applications in two-photon fluorescent bioimaging and lasing.

Abstract
Space-time (ST) wave packets are a class of pulsed optical beams whose spatiotemporal spectral structure results in propagation invariance, tunable group velocity, and anomalous refractive phenomena. Here, we investigate the refraction of ST wave packets normally incident onto a planar interface between two dispersive, homogeneous, isotropic media. We formulate a new, to the best of our knowledge, refractive invariant for ST wave packets in this configuration, from which we obtain a law of refraction that determines the change in their group velocity across the interface. We verify this new refraction law in ZnSe and CdSe, both of which manifest large chromatic dispersion at near-infrared frequencies in the vicinity of their band edges. ST wave packets can thus be utilized in nonlinear optics for bridging large group-velocity mismatches in highly dispersive scenarios.

Abstract
The fast relaxation processes in the excited electronic states of functionalized aza-boron-dipyrromethene (aza-BODIPY) derivatives (1-4) were investigated in liquid media at room temperature, including the linear photophysical, photochemical, and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. Optical gain was revealed for nonfluorescent derivatives 3 and 4 in the near infrared (NIR) spectral range under femtosecond excitation. The values of two-photon absorption (2PA) and excited-state absorption (ESA) cross-sections were obtained for 1-4 in dichloromethane using femtosecond Z-scans, and the role of bromine substituents in the molecular structures of 2 and 4 is discussed. The nature of the excited states involved in electronic transitions of these dyes was investigated using quantum-chemical TD-DFT calculations, and the obtained spectral parameters are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Significant 2PA (maxima cross-sections ∼2000 GM), and large ESA cross-sections ∼10-20 m2 of these new aza-BODIPY derivatives 1-4 along with their measured high photostability reveal their potential for photonic applications in general and optical limiting in particular.

Abstract
We use the polarization-sensitive, time-resolved Beam-Deflection technique to measure the nonlinear refraction of air, exciting in both the near and mid-IR and probing in the mid-IR. This gives us the first measurements for air using both excitation and probe in the mid-IR, and we find no dispersion of the bound-electronic nonlinear refractive index, n2,el(λp;λe), assuming, as has been shown earlier, that the nuclear rotational nonlinear refraction is nearly dispersionless. From these data, we can model the pulsewidth dependence of the effective nonlinear refractive index, n2,eff, i.e., as would be measured by a single beam. Interestingly, n2,eff is maximized for a pulsewidth of approximately 0.5 ps. The position of this maximum is nearly independent of pressure while its magnitude decreases with increasing pressure and temperature. From the measurements and modeling, we predict the nonlinear refraction in the atmosphere at different altitudes.

Abstract
In this work, a new phosphonium-containing cationic polyelectrolyte (PE1) has been rationally designed and developed via a facile click-chemistry type postfunctionalization, which can form complexes with highly polarizable anionic cyanines to significantly reduce the strong and random cyanine-cyanine interactions (i.e., aggregation) in the solid-state. This material design strategy enables an efficient translation of the favorable molecular properties of cyanines into macroscopic material properties. One of such complexes exhibits a very large third-order susceptibility over 10-10 esu with low nonlinear optical loss suitable for all optical signal processing.

Abstract
The electronic properties of neutral 2,4-bis(4-bis(2-hydroxyethyl) amino-2-hydroxy-6-(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)phenyl)squaraine (1) and charged 2-((3-octadecylbenzothiazol-2(3H)-ylidene)methyl)-3-oxo-4-((3-(4-(pyridinium-1-yl)butyl)benzo-thiazol-3-ium-2-yl)methylene)cyclobut-1-enolate iodide (2) squaraine derivatives were analyzed based on comprehensive linear photophysical, photochemical, nonlinear optical studies (including two-photon absorption (2PA) and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements), and quantum chemical calculations. The steady-state absorption, fluorescence, and excitation anisotropy spectra of these new squaraines revealed the values and mutual orientations of the main transition dipoles of 1 and 2 in solvents of different polarity, while their role in specific nonlinear optical properties was shown. The degenerate 2PA spectra of 1 and 2 exhibited similar shapes, with maximum cross sections of ∼300-400 GM, which were determined by the open aperture Z-scan method over a broad spectral range. The nature of the time-resolved excited-state absorption spectra of 1 and 2 was analyzed using a femtosecond transient absorption pump-probe technique and the characteristic relaxation times of 4-5 ps were revealed. Quantum chemical analyses of the electronic properties of 1 and 2 were performed using the ZINDO/S//DFT theory level, affording good agreement with experimental data. To demonstrate the potential of squaraines 1 and 2 as fluorescent probes for bioimaging, laser scanning fluorescence microscopy images of HeLa cells incubated with new squaraines were obtained.

Abstract
We extend the recently developed dual-arm Z-scan to increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for measuring the nonlinear refraction (NLR) of thin films on thick substrates. Similar to the case of solutes in solution, the phase shift due to NLR in a thin film can often be dominated by the phase shift due to NLR in the much thicker substrate. SNR enhancement is accomplished by simultaneously scanning a bare substrate and the film plus substrate in two separate but identical Z-scan arms. The subtraction of these signals taken simultaneously effectively cancels the nonlinear signal from the substrate, leaving only the signal from the film. More importantly, the SNR is increased since the correlated noise from effects such as beam-pointing instabilities cancels. To show the versatility of the dual-arm Z-scan method, we perform measurements on semiconductor and organic thin films, some less than 100 nm thick and with thicknesses up to 4 orders of magnitude less than the substrate.

Abstract
A new kind of fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) is obtained using quatsomes (QSs), a family of nanovesicles proposed as scaffolds for the nanostructuration of commercial lipophilic carbocyanines (1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-indocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI), 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-indodicarbocyanine perchlorate (DiD), and 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-indotricarbocyanine iodide (DiR)) in aqueous media. The obtained FONs, prepared by a CO2 -based technology, show excellent colloidal- and photostability, outperforming other nanoformulations of the dyes, and improve the optical properties of the fluorophores in water. Molecular dynamics simulations provide an atomistic picture of the disposition of the dyes within the membrane. The potential of QSs for biological imaging is demonstrated by performing superresolution microscopy of the DiI-loaded vesicles in vitro and in cells. Therefore, fluorescent QSs constitute an appealing nanomaterial for bioimaging applications.

Abstract
We use our recently developed beam-deflection technique to measure the dispersion of the nondegenerate nonlinear refraction (NLR) of direct-gap semiconductors. The magnitude and sign of the NLR coefficient n2(ωa; ωb) are determined over a broad spectral range for different values of nondegeneracy. In the extremely nondegenerate case, n2(ωa; ωb) is positively enhanced near the two-photon absorption (2PA) edge and is significantly larger than its degenerate counterpart, suggesting applications for nondegenerate all-optical switching. At higher photon energies within the 2PA regime, n2(ωa; ωb) switches sign to negative over a narrow wavelength range. This strong anomalous nonlinear dispersion provides large phase modulation of a femtosecond pulse with bandwidth centered near the zero-crossing frequency. The measured nondegenerate dispersion closely follows our earlier predictions based on nonlinear Kramers-Kronig relations [Sheik-Bahae et. al, IEEE J. Quant. Electron. 30, 249 (1994)].

Abstract
Two-photon lasers require materials with large two-photon gain (2PG) coefficients and low linear and nonlinear losses. Our previous demonstration of large enhancement of two-photon absorption in semiconductors for very different photon energies translates directly into enhancement of 2PG. We experimentally demonstrate nondegenerate 2PG in optically excited bulk GaAs via femtosecond pump-probe measurements. 2PG is isolated from other pump induced effects through the difference between measurements performed with parallel and perpendicular polarizations of pump and probe. An enhancement in the 2PG coefficient of nearly 2 orders of magnitude is reported. The results point a possible way toward two-photon semiconductor lasers.

Abstract
We utilize the recently demonstrated orders of magnitude enhancement of extremely nondegenerate two-photon absorption in direct-gap semiconductor photodiodes to perform scanned imaging of three-dimensional (3D) structures using IR femtosecond illumination pulses (1.6 µm and 4.93 µm) gated on the GaN detector by sub-gap, femtosecond pulses. While transverse resolution is limited by the usual imaging criteria, the longitudinal or depth resolution can be less than a wavelength, dependent on the pulsewidths in this nonlinear interaction within the detector element. The imaging system can accommodate a wide range of wavelengths in the mid-IR and near-IR without the need to modify the detection and imaging systems.

Abstract
A polarization-resolved beam deflection technique is used to separate the bound-electronic and molecular rotational components of nonlinear refractive transients of molecular gases. Coherent rotational revivals from N(2), O(2), and two isotopologues of carbon disulfide (CS(2)), are identified in gaseous mixtures. Dephasing rates, rotational and centrifugal distortion constants of each species are measured. Polarization at the magic angle allows unambiguous measurement of the bound-electronic nonlinear refractive index of air and second hyperpolarizability of CS(2). Agreement between gas and liquid phase second hyperpolarizability measurements is found using the Lorentz-Lorenz local field correction.

Abstract
We modify the well-known photothermal beam deflection technique to study ultrafast nonlinearities. Using phase-sensitive detection we directly measure the temporal and polarization dynamics of nonlinear refraction (NLR) with sensitivity to optically induced phase changes of approximately λ/20,000. We use the relative polarization dependence of excitation and probe to separate the isotropic and reorientational components of the NLR.

Abstract
Two different approaches to increase intersystem crossing rates in polymethine-like molecules are presented: traditional heavy-atom substitution and molecular levels engineering. Linear and nonlinear optical properties of a series of polymethine dyes with Br- and Se-atom substitution, and a series of new squaraine molecules, where one or two oxygen atoms in a squaraine bridge are replaced with sulfur atoms, are investigated. A consequence of the oxygen-to-sulfur substitution in squaraines is the inversion of their lowest-lying ππ* and nπ* states leading to a significant reduction of singlet-triplet energy difference and opening of an additional intersystem channel of relaxation. Experimental studies show that triplet quantum yields for polymethine dyes with heavy-atom substitutions are small (not more than 10%), while for sulfur-containing squaraines these values reach almost unity. Linear spectroscopic characterization includes absorption, fluorescence, quantum yield, anisotropy, and singlet oxygen generation measurements. Nonlinear characterization, performed by picosecond and femtosecond laser systems (pump-probe and Z-scan measurements), includes measurements of the triplet quantum yields, excited state absorption, two-photon absorption, and singlet and triplet state lifetimes. Experimental results are in agreement with density functional theory calculations allowing determination of the energy positions, spin-orbital coupling, and electronic configurations of the lowest electronic transitions.

Abstract
The two-photon absorption (2PA) spectrum of an organic single crystal is reported. The crystal is grown by self-nucleation of a subsaturated hot solution of acetonitrile, and is composed of an asymmetrical donor-π-acceptor cyanine-like dye molecule. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the 2PA spectrum of single crystals made from a cyanine-like dye. The linear and nonlinear properties of the single crystalline material are investigated and compared with the molecular properties of a toluene solution of its monomeric form. The maximum polarization-dependent 2PA coefficient of the single crystal is 52 ± 9 cm/GW, which is more than twice as large as that for the inorganic semiconductor CdTe with a similar absorption edge. The optical properties, linear and nonlinear, are strongly dependent upon incident polarization due to anisotropic molecular packing. X-ray diffraction analysis shows π-stacking dimers formation in the crystal, similar to H-aggregates. Quantum chemical calculations demonstrate that this dimerization leads to the splitting of the energy bands and the appearance of new red-shifted 2PA bands when compared to the solution of monomers. This trend is opposite to the blue shift in the linear absorption spectra upon H-aggregation.

Abstract
Two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra with pairs of extremely nondegenerate photons are measured in several direct-gap semiconductors (GaAs, CdTe, ZnO, ZnS and ZnSe) using picosecond or femtosecond pulses. In ZnSe, using photons with a ratio of energies of ~12, we obtain a 270-fold enhancement of 2PA when comparing to the corresponding degenerate 2PA coefficient at the average photon energy (ηω1 + ηω2)/2. This corresponds to a pump photon energy of 8% of the bandgap. 2PA coefficients as large as 1 cm/MW are measured. Thus, by using two widely different wavelengths we are able to access the large 2PA observed previously only in narrow gap semiconductors. We also calculate the corresponding enhancement of nonlinear refraction, consisting of two-photon, AC-Stark and Raman contributions. The net effect is a smaller enhancement, but exhibits very large dispersion within the 2PA regime.

Abstract
The two-photon absorption, 2PA, cross sections of PbS quantum dots, QDs, are theoretically and experimentally investigated and are shown to be enhanced with increasing quantum confinement. This is in contrast to our previous results for CdSe and CdTe QDs where the reduced density of states dominated and resulted in a decrease in 2PA with a decrease in QD size. Qualitatively this trend can be understood by the highly symmetric distribution of conduction and valence band states in PbS that results in an accumulation of allowed 2PA transitions in certain spectral regions. We also measure the frequency nondegenerate 2PA cross sections that are up to five times larger than for the degenerate case. We use a k·p four-band envelope function formalism to model the increasing trend of the two-photon cross sections due to quantum confinement and also due to resonance enhancement in the nondegenerate case.

Abstract
We experimentally demonstrate that the use of a weak seed pulse of energy less than 0.4% of the pump results in a spectral energy enhancement that spans over 2 octaves and a total energy enhancement of more than 3 times for supercontinua generated by millijoule level femtosecond pulses in Krypton gas. Strong four-wave mixing of the pump-seed pulse interacting in the gas is observed. The spectral irradiance generated from the seeding process is sufficiently high to use white-light continuum as an alternative to conventional tunable sources of radiation for applications such as nonlinear optical spectroscopy.

Abstract
The influence of quantum confinement on the one- and two-photon absorption spectra (1PA and 2PA) of PbS and PbSe semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) is investigated. The results show 2PA peaks at energies where only 1PA transitions are predicted and 1PA peaks where only 2PA transitions are predicted by the often used isotropic k x p four-band envelope function formalism. The first experimentally identified two-photon absorption peak coincides with the energy of the first one photon allowed transition. This first two-photon peak cannot be explained by band anisotropy, verifying that the inversion symmetry of the wave functions is broken and relaxation of the parity selection rules has to be taken into account to explain optical transitions in lead-salt QDs. Thus, while the band anisotropy of the bulk semiconductor plays a role in the absorption spectra, especially for the more anisotropic PbSe QDs, a complete model of the absorption spectra, for both 1PA and 2PA, must also include symmetry breaking of the quantum confined wave functions. These studies clarify the controversy of the origin of spectral features in lead-salt QDs.

Abstract
As part of a strategy to achieve large two-photon absorptivity in fluorene-based probes, a series of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type derivatives were synthesized and their two-photon absorption (2PA) properties investigated. The synthesis of D-A-D fluorophores was achieved by efficient preparation of key intermediates for the introduction of central electron acceptor groups. To accomplish the synthesis of two of the new derivatives, a high-yield method for a one-step direct dibromomethylation of phenyl sulfide was developed. The linear and nonlinear optical properties, including UV-vis absorption, fluorescence emission, fluorescence anisotropy, and two-photon absorption (2PA), of the new D-A-D compounds were measured and compared to their D-A or D-D counterparts. Fully conjugated acceptor moieties in the center of the D-A-D fluorophore led to the greatest increase in the 2PA cross section, while weakly conjugated central acceptors exhibited only a modest increase in the 2PA cross section relative to D-A diploar analogs. Encapsulation of the new probes in Pluronic F 108NF micelles, and subsequent incubation in HCT 116 cells, resulted in very high lysosomal colocalization (>0.98 colocalization coefficient) relative to commercial Lysotracker Red, making the micelle-encapsulated dyes particularly attractive as fluorescent probes for two-photon fluorescence microscopy lysosomal imaging.

A chromophore in which zinc porphyrin donors are linked through their meso positions by ethynyl bridges to a bis(indolinylidenemethyl) squaraine core has been synthesized using Sonogashira coupling. The chromophore exhibits a two-photon absorption spectrum characterized by a peak cross section of 11,000 GM and, more unusually, also exhibits a large cross section of >780 GM over a photon-wavelength window 750 nm in width.

Abstract
We calculate the spectrum of three-photon absorption (3PA) in zinc blende semiconductors using Kane's four-band model. We apply this to ZnSe and measure the 3PA spectrum using femtosecond pulses, obtaining excellent agreement. The spectrum shows the apparent onset of 3PA from the split-off band and also shows quantum interference between the several possible evolution pathways when exciting carriers from valence to conduction band.

Abstract
Extended bis(donor)-substituted squaraine chromophores exhibit very high two-photon cross-sections (as high as 33 000 GM) in the near-IR; these can be attributed to the combination of large transition dipoles with small detuning energies. The modulus of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility at 1.3 mum has been found to be 7.0 x 10-11 esu for one of these chromophores.

Abstract
The two-photon absorption spectrum of a nickel bis(dithiolene) complex with extended conjugation and pi-donor substitution is measured by using Z-scan and pump-probe techniques with femtosecond pulses over the spectral range from 1.20 to 1.58 microm, which includes much of the telecommunications range. The peak two-photon cross section of over 5000 GM (1 GM = 10(-50) cm4 s photon(-1) molecule(-1)) occurs at approximately 1.24 microm, with significant two-photon absorption (>440 GM) throughout the spectral range examined.

Abstract
Three new dipolar chromophores based on a diaklyaminophenyl donor, a pyrrole auxiliary donor, a thiazole auxiliary acceptor, and strong heterocyclic acceptors have been synthesized. For one of these compounds we have measured a very large non-degenerate two-photon cross section of ca. 1500 GM in the near-IR telecommunications range using a pump-probe technique. Calculations indicate the cross section for degenerate two-photon absorption is likely to be ca. 60% of this value.

Abstract
The degenerate and nondegenerate two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra for a symmetric and an asymmetric fluorene derivative were experimentally measured in order to determine the effect of intermediate state resonance enhancement (ISRE) on the 2PA cross section delta. The ability to tune the individual photon energies in the nondegenerate 2PA (ND-2PA) process afforded a quantitative study of the ISRE without modifying the chemical structure of the investigated chromophores. Both molecules exhibited resonant enhancement of the nonlinearity with the asymmetric compound showing as much as a twentyfold increase in delta. Furthermore, the possibility of achieving over a one order of magnitude enhancement of the nonlinearity reveals the potential benefits of utilizing ND-2PA for certain applications. To model ISRE, we have used correlated quantum-chemical methods together with the perturbative sum-over-states (SOS) expression. We find strong qualitative and quantitative correlation between the experimental and theoretical results. Finally, using a simplified three-level model for the SOS expression, we provide intuitive insight into the process of ISRE for ND-2PA.

Abstract
We present a powerful experimental tool and analysis for characterization of two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra. We demonstrate this method with ZnS and then apply it to organic dyes in solution. We also compare the results with those from other methods such as two-photon fluorescence spectroscopy. This femtosecond pump-probe method uses a white-light continuum (WLC) as the probe to produce a nondegenerate 2PA spectrum. The extreme chirp of the WLC requires that transmittance data be collected over a range of temporal delays between pump and probe pulses. These data then need to be corrected for the effects of this chirp as well as for the temporal walk-off of the pulses in the sample that result from the frequency nondegenerate nature of the experiment. We present a simple analytic solution for the transmitted fluence through the sample, which is applicable for most practical cases.
