The effect of benzoic acid with or without a direct-fed microbial on the nutrient metabolism and gas emissions of growing pigs

Twenty-four gilts (PIC 337 × 1050, PIC Genus, Hendersonville, TN) with an initial body weight (BW) of 33.09 ± 1.33 kg were used to investigate the effects of benzoic acid (BA) and a Bacillus-based direct-fed microbial (DFM) on the nutrient metabolism and manure gas emissions of growing pigs. Pigs were blocked by BW, placed into metabolism stalls, and randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments: basal control (PC), low nitrogen (NC), PC plus 0.3% BA (PC+BA; VevoVitall, DSM Nutritional Products), and PC plus 0.3% BA and 0.025% DFM (PC+BA+DFM; PureGro, DSM Nutritional Products). Pigs were fed a common diet from day 0 to 14, and the experimental diets were fed in two phases (day 14 to 28 and day 28 to 53). The experiment consisted of four collection periods, with each period subdivided into two subperiods to collect samples for gas emissions and nutrient balance. Firstly, manure samples were collected for 72 h. Twice daily, urine and feces were weighed, and urine pH was measured. After each period, manure was subsampled and taken to the lab to measure gas emissions. Secondly, urine and feces were quantitatively collected for 96 h to allow for measurement of nutrient digestibility (ATTD) and retention. Data were analyzed as repeated measures in SAS 9.4 (SAS Inst., Cary, NC) with fixed effects of treatment, collection period, and block. Pig was the experimental unit, and results were considered significant at P ≤ 0.05 and a tendency at 0.05 < P ≤ 0.10. Pigs fed PC+BA had the greatest ADG compared to pigs fed NC (P = 0.016), with intermediate ADG for pigs fed PC or PC+BA+DFM (P ≥ 0.148). The ATTD of dry matter, gross energy, P, and N did not differ between treatments (P ≥ 0.093). However, the ATTD of Ca was reduced in pigs fed PC+BA+DFM compared to pigs fed PC+BA (P = 0.012). Pigs fed PC+BA or NC excreted less urinary N compared to PC and PC+BA+DFM (P ≤ 0.034), which contributed to greater nitrogen retention in PC+BA compared to PC (P = 0.016). Furthermore, decreased manure pH from pigs fed PC+BA or NC resulted in lower ammonia (NH₃) emissions compared to pigs fed PC+BA+DFM or PC. There was no effect of dietary treatment on manure hydrogen sulfide, methane, or carbon dioxide emissions. In conclusion, supplementing 0.3% BA improved N retention and reduced manure pH and NH₃ emissions, similar to feeding pigs low N, but improved the ADG of pigs when compared to feeding a low N diet.

259 Effects of dietary crude protein level on growth performance, fecal score, gastrointestinal pH, and blood characteristics in weanling pigs fed antibiotic-free diets

Reducing dietary CP with crystalline AA supplementation has been proposed as a nutritional strategy to control post-weaning diarrhea in response to global concerns about negative effects of sub-therapeutic use of antibiotics. One hundred eighty weaned pigs (5.53 ± 0.88 kg) were randomly allotted to 3 treatments with 12 replicate pens per treatment for 28 d. Treatments included antibiotic-free, corn-soybean meal diets containing 22% and 19% CP, adequate in AA, and a 16% CP diet that provided AA below the requirement. Daily feed provisions and pig weights were recorded weekly. Fecal scores were assessed every other day. Blood samples were collected on d 1, 6, 13, 20, and 27 and 1 pig per pen was euthanized on d 12. Data for growth performance, fecal scores, and intestinal pH were analyzed by contrast statements and data for blood characteristics were analyzed using repeated measures. Results indicated that reducing dietary CP linearly (P ≤ 0.05) reduced overall ADG, G:F, body weight, and fecal scores of pigs. Reduction in dietary CP resulted in greater reduction in BUN after d 13 (treatment × day interaction, P ≤ 0.05). Total protein, albumin, and vitamin A and E in serum were lowest (P ≤ 0.05) on d 13, and pigs fed 16% CP had reduced (P ≤ 0.05) albumin compared with pigs fed other diets. The pH in the ileum was reduced (P ≤ 0.05) as dietary CP decreased but pH in the colon of pigs fed 19% CP was the lowest (P &lt; 0.05) at d 13. In conclusion, reducing CP to 19% and 16% in antibiotic-free diets for weanling pigs reduces fecal score without impairing the growth performance during the first 14 d after weaning. However, additional strategies are needed to maintain growth performance during the next two weeks.

Safety and efficacy evaluation of a novel dietary muramidase for swine

The safety of a novel microbial muramidase (Muramidase 007) as a feed additive for swine was evaluated in a target animal safety study (Experiment 1). Forty weanling pigs were allotted to 4 dietary treatments: T1 control group, and 3 groups receiving Muramidase 007 in increasing doses: T2 65,000 (1X), T3 325,000 (5X) and T4 650,000 (10X) LSU(F)/kg feed. The efficacy of Muramidase 007 on growth performance was evaluated in a feeding experiment (Experiment 2). A total of 288 piglets were allotted to two groups: T1 control group and T2 receiving Muramidase 007 at 50,000 (LSU(F)/kg feed. In Experiment 1, no growth depression of pigs was observed. No adverse effects of Muramidase 007 were observed for any of the hematology and serum chemistry parameters measured or on pig health status. Post-mortem evaluation showed no adverse effects due to Muramidase 007 supplementation in the gross pathology or in the histological examination. In Experiment 2, Muramidase 007 significantly increased overall (d 0-42) average daily gain (ADG) and tended to improve overall average daily feed intake (ADFI) and day 42 body weight of nursery pigs and had no effect on feed conversion ratio (FCR). Overall, results of these studies show that there were no adverse effects of Muramidase 007 compared to the control group.

Description of high rates of unapparent and simultaneous multiple dengue virus infection in a Colombian jungle settlement

Dengue disease statistics is mainly based on consulting patients with febrile illness, but misdiagnosed and asymptomatic cases are important to measure dengue epidemiology in endemic areas. The main objective of this work was to determine the prevalence of IgM and IgG antibodies or NS1 antigen and viral RNA in a group of healthy volunteers from an isolated village in Colombian Chocó rain forest. It found 51.7% of virologically PCR confirmed asymptomatic cases, despite low IgM seroprevalence. It was confirmed that all four serotypes are in the circulation and in 17.2% of individuals it detected natural coinfections of two or three different serotypes simultaneously. This is the first report in Colombia evaluating viremia in asymptomatic volunteers. These findings pose a big concern about the transmission of dengue virus by asymptomatic individuals because they can spread the virus without take appropriate control measures.
