Metallo-Supramolecular Helical Fibres from Chiral Phenylacetylene Monomers: Cation Induced Self-Assembly

Chiral metallo-supramolecular fibres can be easily obtained by mixing a chloroform solution of a phenylacetylene monomer (PA) that bears a chiral sulfoxide group as pendant, with different equivalents of a methanolic solution of AgClO4 . Thus, while the PA is found molecularly dissolved in chloroform, the addition of Ag+ ions induce its aggregation through the formation of an axially chiral metallo-supramolecular aggregate with high thermal stable properties. In this case, the ability of the metal ion to coordinate the PA triple bond, combined with the argentophilicity of the metal ion and the planarity of the phenylacetylene drives to the formation of a helical coordination polymer, whose P or M axial chirality is determined by the chirality of the sulfoxide used as substituent of the PA. Depending on the PA/Ag+ (mol/mol) ratio, it is possible to tune the morphology of the metallo-supramolecular aggregate from chiral fibers to chiral gel.

Stimuli-responsive synthetic helical polymers

Synthetic dynamic helical polymers (supramolecular and covalent) and foldamers share the helix as a structural motif. Although the materials are different, these systems also share many structural properties, such as helix induction or conformational communication mechanisms. The introduction of stimuli responsive building blocks or monomer repeating units in these materials triggers conformational or structural changes, due to the presence/absence of the external stimulus, which are transmitted to the helix resulting in different effects, such as assymetry amplification, helix inversion or even changes in the helical scaffold (elongation, J/H helical aggregates). In this review, we show through selected examples how different stimuli (e.g., temperature, solvents, cations, anions, redox, chiral additives, pH or light) can alter the helical structures of dynamic helical polymers (covalent and supramolecular) and foldamers acting on the conformational composition or molecular structure of their components, which is also transmitted to the macromolecular helical structure.

P/M Macromolecular Switch Based on Conformational Control Exerted by an Achiral Side Chain within an Axially Chiral Locked Pendant

Molecular switches, supramolecular chemistry, and polymers can be combined to create stimuli-responsive multichiral materials. Therefore, by acting on the extended/bent conformational composition of an achiral arm, it is possible to create a macromolecular gear, where different supramolecular interactions can be activated/deactivated to control the helical sense of a polymer containing up to five different chiral axial motifs. For this, a chiral allene with a flexible achiral arm was introduced as a pendant in poly(phenylacetylene). Through flexible arm control between extended and bent conformations, it is possible to selectively induce either a P or M helical sense in the polymer, while the relative spatial distribution of the substituents in the allene remains unaltered in two perpendicular planes (configurationally locked). These results show that complex dynamic multichiral materials can be obtained by the polymerization of appropriate monomers that combine chirality, switching properties, and the ability to generate chiral supramolecular assemblies.

Multi-chiral materials comprising metallosupramolecular and covalent helical polymers containing five axial motifs within a helix

Supramolecular and covalent polymers share multiple structural effects such as communication mechanisms among monomer repeating units, which are related to their axial helical structure. Herein, a unique multi-helical material combining information from both metallosupramolecular and covalent helical polymers is presented. In this system, the helical structure described by the poly(acetylene) (PA) backbone (cis-cisoidal, cis-transoidal) guides the pendant groups in a fashion where a tilting degree emerges between a pendant and the adjacent ones. As a result, a multi-chiral material is formed comprising four or five axial motifs when the polyene skeleton adopts either a cis-transoidal or cis-cisoidal configuration: the two coaxial helices-internal and external-and the two or three chiral axial motifs described by the bispyridyldichlorido Pt^II complex array. These results show that complex multi-chiral materials can be obtained by polymerizing appropriate monomers that combine both point chirality and the ability to generate chiral supramolecular assemblies.

Screw sense excess and reversals of helical polymers in solution

The helix reversal is a structural motif found in helical polymers in the solid state, but whose existence is elusive in solution. Herein, we have shown how the photochemical electrocyclization (PEC) of poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) can be used to determine not only the presence of helix reversals in polymer solution, but also to estimate the screw sense excess. To perform these studies, we used a library of well folded PPAs and different copolymers series made by enantiomeric comonomers that show chiral conflict effect. The results obtained indicate that the PEC of a PPA will depend on the helical scaffold adopted by the PPA backbone and on its folding degree. Then, from these studies it is possible to determine the screw sense excess of a PPA, highly important in applications such as chiral stationary phases in HPLC or asymmetric synthesis.

Diastereomeric multi-chiral pendant groups: Their key role in stimuli-responsive polymeric responses

Chiral information transmission in helical polymers bearing multi-chiral pendant groups is usually determined by the absolute configuration of the first chiral center. The second chiral residue usually has low-to-null influence in the macromolecular handedness of the polymer, due to its remote position respect to the polyene main chain. Here, we demonstrate how the stimuli responsive properties of diastereomeric polymers, obtained by changing the absolute configuration of the second chiral center, are different due to the unlike properties of diastereoisomers.

Full Control of the Chiral Overpass Effect in Helical Polymers: P/M Screw Sense Induction by Remote Chiral Centers After Bypassing the First Chiral Residue

In helical polymers, helical sense induction is usually commanded by teleinduction mechanism, where the largest substituent of the chiral residue directly attached to the main chain is the one that commands the helical sense. In this work, different helical structures with different helical senses are induced in a helical polymer [poly-(phenylacetylene)] when the conformational composition of two different dihedral angles of a pendant group with more than two chiral residues is tamed. Thus, while the dihedral angle at chiral residue 1 [(R)- or (S)-alanine], attached to the backbone, produces an extended or bent conformation in the pendant resulting in two scaffolds with different stretching degree, the second dihedral angle at chiral residue 2 [(R)- or (S)-methoxyphenylacetamide] places the substituents of this chiral center in a different spatial orientation, originating opposite helical senses at the polymer that are induced through a total control of the "chiral overpass effect".

Chiroptical and colorimetric switches based on helical polymer-metal nanocomposites prepared via redox metal translocation of helical polymer metal complexes

A helical copoly(phenylacetylene) that follows a dynamic chiral accord effect has been designed to further synthesize dynamic chiral nanocomposites. Its two pendants are benzamides of (L)-methionine methyl ester [(L)-1, 20%] and (L)-alanine methyl ester [(L)-2, 80%], the former being responsible for binding the copolymer to metallic nanoparticles (MNPs, M = Au, Ag) via the thioether. The two chiral comonomers have analogous dynamic behavior, and therefore, the copolymer-poly-[(L)-1_0.2-co-(L)-2_0.8]-adopts a preferred helical sense that can be amplified or inverted by stimuli acting simultaneously on both pendants. The formation of nanocomposites can be followed by different sequential chiroptical responses of the copolymer once the helical polymer metal-complexes are formed-M to P helix inversion by the formation of poly-[(L)-1_0.2-co-(L)-2_0.8]/Au³⁺ or poly-[(L)-1_0.2-co-(L)-2_0.8]/Ag⁺-and further reduction with NaBH₄ to generate the corresponding nanocomposites-P to M helix inversion by the formation of poly-[(L)-1_0.2-co-(L)-2_0.8]-AuNPs (6 nm) and poly-[(L)-1_0.2-co-(L)-2_0.8]-AgNPs (5 nm). These nanocomposites exhibit the properties of both components, helix inversion in the PPA and a colorimetric response in the MNPs triggered by metal ions.

Photostability and Dynamic Helical Behavior in Chiral Poly(phenylacetylene)s with a Preferred Screw‐Sense

Helical polymers such as poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) are interesting materials due to the possibility of tuning their helical scaffold (sense and elongation) once they have been prepared and by the presence of external stimuli. The main limitation in the application of PPAs is their poor photostability. These polymers degrade under visible light exposure through a photochemical electrocyclization process. In this work, it was demonstrated, through a selected example, how the photochemical degradation in PPAs is directly related to their dynamic helical behavior. Thus, while PPAs with dynamic helical structures show poor photostability under UV/Vis light exposure, poly‐(R)‐1, bearing an enantiopure sulfoxide group as pendant group and designed to have a quasi‐static helical behavior, shows a large photostability due to the restricted conformational composition at the polyene backbone, needed to orient the conjugated double bonds prior to the photochemical electrocyclization process and the subsequent degradation of the material.

Merging Supramolecular and Covalent Helical Polymers: Four Helices Within a Single Scaffold

Supramolecular and covalent polymers share multiple structural effects such as chiral amplification, helical inversion, sergeants and soldiers, or majority rules, among others. These features are related to the axial helical structure found in both types of materials, which are responsible for their properties. Herein a novel material combining information and characteristics from both fields of helical polymers, supramolecular (oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) (OPE)) and covalent (poly(acetylene) (PA)), is presented. To achieve this goal, the poly(acetylene) must adopt a dihedral angle between conjugated double bonds (ω1) higher than 165°. In such cases, the tilting degree (Θ) between the OPE units used as pendant groups is close to 11°, like that observed in supramolecular helical arrays of these molecules. Polymerization of oligo[(p-phenyleneethynylene)n]phenylacetylene monomers (n = 1, 2) bearing L-decyl alaninate as the pendant group yielded the desired scaffolds. These polymers adopt a stretched and almost planar polyene helix, where the OPE units are arranged describing a helical structure. As a result, a novel multihelix material was prepared, the ECD spectra of which are dominated by the OPE axial array.

Elucidating the Supramolecular Copolymerization of N- and C-Centered Benzene-1,3,5-Tricarboxamides: The Role of Parallel and Antiparallel Packing of Amide Groups in the Copolymer Microstructure

An in‐depth study of the supramolecular copolymerization behavior of N‐ and C‐centered benzene‐1,3,5‐tricarboxamides (N‐ and C‐BTAs) has been conducted in methylcyclohexane and in the solid state. The connectivity of the amide groups in the BTAs differs, and mixing N‐ and C‐BTAs results in supramolecular copolymers with a blocky microstructure in solution. The blocky microstructure results from the formation of weaker and less organized, antiparallel hydrogen bonds between N‐ and C‐BTAs. In methylcyclohexane, the helical threefold hydrogen‐bonding network present in C‐ and N‐BTAs is retained in the mixtures. In the solid state, in contrast, the hydrogen bonds of pure BTAs as well as their mixtures organize in a sheet‐like pattern, and in the mixtures long‐range order is lost. Drop‐casting to kinetically trap the solution microstructures shows that C‐BTAs retain the helical hydrogen bonds, but N‐BTAs immediately adopt the sheet‐like pattern, a direct consequence of the lower stabilization energy of the helical hydrogen bonds. In the copolymers, the stability of the helical aggregates depends on the copolymer composition, and helical aggregates are only preserved when a high amount of C‐BTAs is present. The method outlined here is generally applicable to elucidate the copolymerization behavior of supramolecular monomers both in solution as well as in the solid state.

The Role of Polymer-AuNP Interaction in the Stimuli-Response Properties of PPA-AuNP Nanocomposites

The helical sense control of dynamic helical polymers such as poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) is greatly affected when they are conjugated to AuNPs through a strong thiol-Au connection, which restricts conformational changes at the polymer. Thus, the classical thiol-MNP bonds must be replaced by weaker ones, such as supramolecular amide-Au interactions. A straightforward preparation of the PPA-Au nanocomposite by reduction of a preformed PPA-Au³⁺ complex cannot be used due to a redox reaction between the two components of the complex which degrades the polymer. To avoid the interaction between the PPA and the Au³⁺ ions before the reduction takes place, the metal ions are added to the polymer solution capped as a TOAB complex, which keeps the PPA stable due to the lack of PPA-Au³⁺ interactions. Ulterior reduction of the Au³⁺ ions by NaBH₄ affords the desired nanocomposite, where the AuNPs are stabilized by supramolecular anilide-AuNPs interactions. By using this approach, 3.7 nm gold nanoparticles are generated and aligned along the polymer chain with a regular distance between particles of 6 nm that corresponds to two helical pitches. These nanocomposites show stimuli-responsive properties and are also able to form macroscopically chiral nanospheres with tunable size.

Photochemical Electrocyclization of Poly(phenylacetylene)s: Unwinding Helices to Elucidate their 3D Structure in Solution

Photochemical electrocyclization of poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) is used for the structural elucidation of a polyene backbone. This method not only allows classification of PPAs in cis-cisoidal (ω₁ <90°) or cis-transoidal structures (ω₁ >90°), but also approximating ω₁ . A PPA solution is illuminated with visible light and monitoring the photochemical electrocyclization of the PPA helix by measuring the ECD spectra at different times. PPAs with a cis-cisoidal structure show a reduction of the ECD signal of at least 50 % before 30 min of irradiation, while cis-transoidal helices need much longer time because the transoidal bond must be isomerized. The different cis-cisoidal and cis-transoidal helices require different times to decrease their ECD signal by 50 % (t_1/2 ), depending on the degree of compression or stretching of the helix, establishing a relationship between the secondary structure adopted by PPA (ω₁ ) and the time required to lose the ECD vinylic signal by light irradiation.

The Competitive Aggregation Pathway of an Asymmetric Chiral Oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) Towards the Formation of Individual P and M Supramolecular Helical Polymers

A complex aggregation pathway towards two diastereomeric P and M supramolecular helices arises from the aggregation of a short, chiral, and rigid oligo(phenyleneethynylene) [OPE, (S)-1]. Thus, while Agg_I aggregate is obtained when a DCM solution of (S)-1 is diluted with MCH at room temperature, Agg_II aggregate is generated only after a slow heating (353 K)/cooling (273 K) process. Interestingly, during Agg_I formation (mechanism 1), short P chain oligomers are produced, which have a great tendency to aggregate in plane, yielding brick-like nanostructures that halt the aggregation process. On the other hand, after a heating/cooling cycle, long M type columnar helical aggregates (Agg_II ) are obtained, formed by individual supramolecular polymer chains (mechanism 2) easily visualized by AFM. The two different P/M orientations obtained for Agg_I and Agg_II reveal the dynamic character of the system and its ability to create diastereomeric helical structures under the right conditions. Different experimental protocols were explored to prepare long M type columnar helical aggregates, which are not obtained by using the previous MCH/DCM 99/1 (v/v) solvent mixture. The generation of the desired M oriented supramolecular polymer is achieved when toluene is added to the solvent mixture in a 97/2/1 MCH/Tol/DCM (v/v/v) ratio.

Genome-wide association studies for sperm traits in Assaf sheep breed

Sperm quality traits routinely collected by artificial insemination (AI) center for rams progeny test are related with the capacity to produce sperm doses for AI and, in more or less grade, with males' fertility. Low-quality ejaculates are unuseful to perform AI sperm doses, which suppose high economic loses for the AI center. Moreover, sperm quality traits have low heritability values which make traditional genetic selection little efficient to its improvement. In this work, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted by using sperm quality traits data and 50 K Affymetrix custom chip genotypes of 429 rams of Assaf breed from OVIGEN AI centre. Furthermore, 47 of these rams were also genotyped with the Illumina HD Ovine BeadChip, and therefore HD genotypes were imputed for all rams with phenotype data. Previous to the GWAS, a linear regression model was fitted including sperm traits as dependent variables; the flock of origin, date of sperm collection, and jump number as fixed effects; rams age at collection in months as covariate; and ram permanent effect as random. Pseudo-phenotypes obtained from this model were used as input for GWAS. Associations at the chromosome-wise level (FDR 10%) of 76 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 4 chromosomes for ejaculate concentration (CON), 20 SNPs in 3 chromosomes for ejaculate volume (VOL), 32 SNPs in 1 chromosome for ejaculate number of spermatozoa (SPZ), and 23 SNPs for spermatozoa mass motility (MOT) in 17 chromosomes were found. Only SNPs associated with MOT overcame the genome-wide significance level. Some candidate genes for sperm traits variability were SLC9C1 (OAR1), TSN (OAR2), and FUT10 (OAR26) for MOT;. DOCK2, CPLANE1, SPEF2, and RAI14 (OAR16) for CON; SCAPER and PSMA4 (OAR18) for VOL; and PARM1 and LOC101110593 (OAR6) for SPZ. SNPs associated with sperm traits were not found to be correlated with milk production genetic variation; however, the high frequencies of some SNPs with negative effect over sperm traits found in animals at the top milk yield estimated breeding values (EBVs) ranking would allow to exert some selective presure to improve rams sperm performances. Effects and frequencies of some of the SNPs detected over sperm quality traits make these variants good candidates to be used in marker-assisted selection to improve sperm characteristics of Assaf rams and AI center efficiency to produce sperm doses.

Chiral information harvesting in helical poly(acetylene) derivatives using oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene)s as spacers

A chiral harvesting transmission mechanism is described in poly(acetylene)s bearing oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene)s (OPEs) used as rigid achiral spacers and derivatized with chiral pendant groups. The chiral moieties induce a positive or negative tilting degree in the stacking of OPE units along the polymer structure, which is further harvested by the polyene backbone adopting either a P or M helix.

Raman Optical Activity (ROA) as a New Tool to Elucidate the Helical Structure of Poly(phenylacetylene)s

Poly(phenylacetylene)s are a family of helical polymers constituted by conjugated double bonds. Raman spectra of these polymers show a structural fingerprint of the polyene backbone which, in combination with its helical orientation, makes them good candidates to be studied by Raman optical activity (ROA). Four different well-known poly(phenylacetylene)s adopting different scaffolds and ten different helical senses have been prepared. Raman and ROA spectra were recorded and allowed to establish ROA-spectrum/helical-sense relationships: a left/right-handed orientation of the polyene backbone (M_helix /P_helix ) produces a triplet of positive/negative ROA bands. Raman and ROA spectra of each polymer exhibited the same profile, and the sign of the ROA spectrum was opposite to the lowest-energy electronic circular dichroism (ECD) band, indicating a resonance effect. Resonance ROA appears then as an indicator of the helical sense of poly(phenylacetylene)s, especially for those with an extra Cotton band in the ECD spectrum, where a wrong helical sense is assigned based on ECD, while ROA alerts of this misassignment.

Chiral Overpass Induction in Dynamic Helical Polymers Bearing Pendant Groups with Two Chiral Centers

The dynamic behavior of helical polymers bearing pendant groups with two chiral centers was studied. Controlled conformational changes at the chiral units placed either closer to or further away from the main chain promote different helical structures. Although the first residue is usually responsible for determining a specific helicity (P or M), we now found that the second chiral center is also able to induce a preferred helical sense when it is located closer in space to the main chain, thereby cancelling the order from the first chiral moiety. This result was achieved through proper coordination with a metal cation. As proof of concept, poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) that bear one and two chiral amino acid units of different sizes and configuration combinations (l/d-alanine and l/d-phenylalanine) as pendants were evaluated. In total, ten polymers were studied. This constitutes the first report of axial control from a remote stereocenter in polymers bearing complex chiral pendants.

Chiral gold-PPA nanocomposites with tunable helical sense and morphology

A novel type of stimuli-responsive dynamic helical polymer-metal nanoparticle nanocomposite formed by a helical poly(phenylacetylene) (PPA) combined with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is described. Thus, several PPA copolymers containing the ethynyl-4-benzamide of (S)-phenylglycine methyl ester (M1) to dictate the helical structure/sense of the copolymer, and the ethynyl-4-benzamide of the 11-((2-(2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl)amino)undecane-1-thiol (M2) to link the copolymer to the AuNPs are prepared. Different morphologies of these nanocomposites were obtained by considering the thiol ratio and the self-assembly properties of the PPA, which generates from dispersed AuNPs to fibre-like structures. All these nanocomposites show a dynamic chiral behaviour, it being possible to manipulate their helical sense by the action of external stimuli. Moreover, it is possible to control the aggregation of these nanocomposites into macroscopically chiral nanospheres with low polydispersity by using Ba2+ as a crosslinking agent.

Decoding the ECD Spectra of Poly(phenylacetylene)s: Structural Significance

The role of the main dihedral angles in the electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra of poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) was estimated by using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) for oligo(phenylacetylene)s (n = 12). These studies reveal that in cis-transoidal arrangements, the first Cotton effect is dominated by excitations involving molecular orbitals (MOs) mainly related to the polyene backbone. Hence, for this scaffold, the ± sign of the first Cotton effect reflects the P/M helical sense of the internal helix of the polymer. However, in cis-cisoidal arrangements, contribution of MOs in the polyene and the aryl rings of the PPA backbone produce the first Cotton effect band. As a result, two different ECD signatures with three or four alternating Cotton effects can be produced depending on the sign of the ω₁ and ω₃ dihedral angles which determine the helical sense of the polyene (ω₁) and the relative orientation of the aryl ring toward the polyene (ω₃), respectively. Thus, on the one hand, if ω₁ and ω₃ rotate in opposite directions, a CD with three alternating Cotton effects is observed, where the sign of first Cotton correlates with the P/M helical sense of the polyene. On the other hand, if ω₁ and ω₃ rotate in the same direction, a CD signature with four alternating Cotton effects is produced where the information relative to the P/M helical sense of the polyene is contained in the second Cotton effect.

Stimuli-Directed Colorimetric Interconversion of Helical Polymers Accompanied by a Tunable Self-Assembly Process

Interconversion between extended and bent structures at the pendant groups of a chiral polyene framework [poly(phenylacetylene) with (R)-(2-methoxy-2-phenylacetyl)glycine residues linked to 4-vinylanilines] allows the reversible colorimetric transformation from stretched to compressed helical cis-transoid polyenic structures through manipulation of the flexible spacer. This transformation generates either organogels (stretched helical form) or nanoparticles (compressed helical form) under the control of polar/low polar stimuli respectively and opens the way to the development of new sensors and stimuli-sensitive materials based on these concepts.

Macromolecular helicity control of poly(phenyl isocyanate)s with a single stimuli-responsive chiral switch

The introduction of a single chiral substituent with a switchable conformer equilibrium at the poly(phenyl isocyanate) terminus allowed the control of the helical sense of the polymer backbone using various external stimuli. Helical sense enhancement was achieved through a domino effect, where the helical sense was assigned by VCD spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

Chiral-to-Chiral Communication in Polymers: A Unique Approach To Control Both Helical Sense and Chirality at the Periphery

A novel approach to the classical Sergeants and Soldiers effect, using chiral Sergeants and chiral Soldiers, allows control over both helical and external chirality in helical polymers. In the systems reported here, it is possible to induce the same helical sense ( M or P) from either of the two enantiomers of a chiral pendant group ["chiral Soldier", major component; i.e., ( R)- or ( S)-1] when it faces a single enantiomer of an appropriate "chiral Sergeant" [minor component; i.e., ( S)-2]. For instance, the copolymer series poly[( R)-1 _r- co-( S)-2_{(1- r)}], poly[( S)-1 _r- co-( S)-2_{(1- r)}], and poly[( rac)-1 _r- co-( S)-2_{(1- r)}] adopt the same P helix even though the major component shows the opposite absolute configuration. This chiral-to-chiral communication effect is transmitted by the stabilization of different conformations in each enantiomeric form of the Soldier. As a result, this groundbreaking approximation to the Sergeants and Soldiers effect allows the preparation of a single-handed helix-which depends only on the Sergeant's configuration-with different chiralities on the helix periphery. Thus, a P helix can be decorated with the R isomer, S isomer, or even a racemic mixture of the chiral Soldier. A change in the absolute configuration of the Sergeant affords the opposite M helix, which can also be decorated with the R isomer, S isomer, or racemic mixture of the chiral Soldier.

Sequential Induction of Chirality in Helical Polymers: From the Stereocenter to the Achiral Solvent

Several steps of chiral induction have been detected in poly(phenylacetylene)s among their different hierarchical levels of chirality by vibrational circular dichroism, namely, (i) from the stereogenic centers to the innermost polyacetylene helical covalent backbone (helix_int), (ii) from this to the external helix (helix_ext) formed by the side phenyl pendants that form a complementary helix or counter-helix, and (iii) from this pendant helix to the helical solvation sphere (helix_solv.), the last one being observed along this work. The pendant to polyene backbone chiral induction determines the helical structure adopted by the polymer and therefore the solvation helix. This helical structure is promoted by two mechanisms: steric effects and hydrogen bonding. An important finding concerns the demonstration by VCD of how an achiral solvent becomes chirally organized owing to the template effect of the covalent polymer helices, an effect that is silent to other structural techniques such as ECD or AFM and that hence significantly broadens the scope of these previous analyses.

Predicting the Helical Sense of Poly(phenylacetylene)s from their Electron Circular Dichroism Spectra

The calculated ECD spectrum (time-dependent density functional theory TD-DFT) for small oligomers of polyphenylacetylenes (PPAs) show a very good match with the experimental spectra of the PPA polymers, particularly with the first Cotton band associated to the helical sense of the internal polyenic backbone. This has been proven with a series of PPAs representative of cis-cisoidal, cis-transoidal, compressed and stretched polyene backbones, with identical or opposite internal/external rotational senses and allows the prediction of the helical sense of the internal helix of a PPA directly from its CD spectra.

The role of the secondary structure of helical poly(phenylacetylene)s in the formation of nanoparticles from polymer-metal complexes (HPMCs)

The great importance of the secondary structure (compressed/stretched) of helical poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) in the formation of nanostructures (nanospheres and nanotoroids) by complexation with metal ions of diverse valences is demonstrated. PPAs bearing the same chelating units [anilide of (R)-methoxyphenylacetic acid] but displaying different helical scaffolds show great differences in their nanostructuration due to the different secondary structures of their helices despite the analogous ways in which their mono- and divalent metal ions form complexes. This key 3-D structural feature has not been taken into account previously when studying the nanostructuration of helical polymer-metal complexes (HPMCs).

Prospective multicentre study on barbed reposition pharyngoplasty standing alone or as a part of multilevel surgery for sleep apnoea

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to demonstrate in a prospective multicentre study that Barbed Reposition Pharyngoplasty (BRP) procedure is safe and effective in management of obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) patients.

DESIGN

Prospective study.

SETTING

Multicentre study.

PARTICIPANTS

Patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnoea.

MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES

Values of postoperative apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI), oxygen desaturation index (ODI), epworth sleepiness scale (ESS).

RESULTS

111 Barbed Reposition Pharyngoplasty procedures standing alone or as a part of multilevel surgery for OSAHS, performed between January and September 2016, were analysed in 15 different centres. The average hospitalisation period was 2.5 ± 0.5 days. The mean patient age was 46.3 ± 10.5 years. The average body mass index at the time of the procedure was 27.9 ± 3.2, and the majority of the patients were men (83%). The mean preoperative and postoperative apnoea/hypopnea index was 33.4 ± 19.5 and 13.5 ± 10.3, respectively (P < .001). The mean preoperative and postoperative ESS score was 10.2 ± 4.5 and 6.1 ± 3.6, respectively (P < .001). The mean preoperative and postoperative ODI were 29.6 ± 20.7 and 12.7 ± 10.8, respectively (P < .001).

CONCLUSIONS

Patients undergoing BRP standing alone or as part of a multilevel approach for the treatment of OSAHS have a reasonable expectation for success with minimal morbidity.

Chiral nanostructure in polymers under different deposition conditions observed using atomic force microscopy of monolayers: poly(phenylacetylene)s as a case study

Dynamic poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) adopt helical structures with different elongation or helical senses depending on the types of pendants. Hence, a good knowledge of the parameters that define their structures becomes a key factor in the understanding of their properties and functions. Herein, the techniques used for the study of the secondary structure of PPAs using atomic-force microscopy (AFM) are presented, with special attention directed towards the methods used for the preparation of monolayers, and their consequences in the quality of the AFM images. Thus, monolayers formed by drop casting, spin coating followed by crystallization or annealing, Langmuir-Blodgett and Langmuir-Schaefer methods, onto highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) or mica, are described, together with the AFM images and the resulting helical structure obtained for different PPAs. Furthermore, some conclusions are drawn both on the adequacy of the different techniques for the formation of monolayers and on the solid supports utilized to elucidate the secondary structure of different PPAs.

Simultaneous Adjustment of Size and Helical Sense of Chiral Nanospheres and Nanotubes Derived from an Axially Racemic Poly(phenylacetylene)

Nanospheres and nanotubes with full control of their size and helical sense are obtained in chloroform from the axially racemic chiral poly(phenylacetylene) poly-(R)-1 using either Ag⁺ as both chiral inducer and cross-linking agent or Na⁺ as chiral inducer and Ag⁺ as cross-linking agent. The size is tuned by the polymer/ion ratio while the helical sense is modulated by the polymer/cosolvent (i.e., MeCN) ratio. In this way, the helicity and the size of the nanoparticles can be easily interconverted by very simple experimental changes.
