Abstract
To be profitably exploited in medicine, nanosized systems must be endowed with biocompatibility, targeting capability, the ability to evade the immune system, and resistance to clearance. Currently, biogenic nanoparticles, such as extracellular vesicles (EVs), are intensively investigated as the platform that naturally recapitulates these highly needed characteristics. EV native targeting properties and pharmacokinetics can be further augmented by decorating the EV surface with specific target ligands as antibodies. However, to date, studies dealing with the functionalization of the EV surface with proteins have never considered the protein corona "variable", namely the fact that extrinsic proteins may spontaneously adsorb on the EV surface, contributing to determine the surface, and in turn the biological identity of the EV. In this work, we explore and compare the two edge cases of EVs modified with the antibody Cetuximab (CTX) by chemisorption of CTX (through covalent binding via biorthogonal click-chemistry) and by formation of a physisorbed CTX corona. The results indicate that (i) no differences exist between the two formulations in terms of binding affinity imparted by molecular recognition of CTX versus its natural binding partner (epidermal growth factor receptor, EGFR), but (ii) significant differences emerge at the cellular level, where CTX-EVs prepared by click chemistry display superior binding and uptake toward target cells, very likely due to the higher robustness of the CTX anchorage.

Abstract
Two triarylcorrole complexes, (hydroxy)[5,10,15-tritolylcorrolato]silicon-(TTC)Si(OH) and (dihydroxy)[5,10,15-tritolylcorrolato]phosphorous-(TTC)P(OH) 2 , have been investigated by magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and magnetic circularly polarized luminescence (MCPL). The spectroscopic investigations have been combined with explicit calculation of MCD response through time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) formalism. This has allowed us to better define the role of molecular orbitals in the transitions associated with the Soret and Q bands. Besides and more importantly, MCD has made it possible to follow the titration process of (TTC)Si(OH) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution with NaF and of (TTC)P(OH) 2 in dichloromethane solution with alcohols in a complementary and, we dare say, more sensitive way with respect to absorption and fluorescence data. Finally, the MCPL spectra and the ancillary TD-DFT calculations have allowed us to characterize the excited state of (TTC)Si(OH).

Abstract
Porphyrins and carbon nanomaterials are among the most widely investigated and applied compounds, both offering multiple options to modulate their optical, electronic and magnetic properties by easy and well-established synthetic manipulations. Individually, they play a leading role in the development of efficient and robust chemical sensors, where they detect a plethora of analytes of practical relevance. But even more interesting, the merging of the peculiar features of these single components into hybrid nanostructures results in novel materials with amplified sensing properties exploitable in different application fields, covering the areas of health, food, environment and so on. In this contribution, we focused on recent examples reported in literature illustrating the integration of different carbon materials (i.e., graphene, nanotubes and carbon dots) and (metallo)porphyrins in heterostructures exploited in chemical sensors operating in liquid as well as gaseous phase, with particular focus on research performed in the last four years.

Abstract
A low-cost on-paper sensor based on 5,10,15-tritolylcorrolatocobalt(III) triphenylphosphine, CoTTCorr(PPh3), was developed for cyanide detection in aqueous solutions. The sensor was coupled to a smartphone and used a home-written color intensity analysis software in order to record and interpret the colorimetric response. The detection of cyanide was possible down to 0.053 mg/L, an order of magnitude lower than the value of 0.5 mg/L set by the World Health Organization (WHO) for safe short-term exposure of cyanide in potable water. The colorimetric sensor had selectivity toward cyanide ions over the anions Cl-, Br, F-, NO2, SCN-, OA[Formula: see text]-,ClO4-, H2PO4- and HCO3- while the influence of NO3- ions on the sensor optical response towards cyanide was overcome by optimization of the ionophore/anion-exchanger ratio inside the sensing material. The best performance was obtained for the optode with an ionophore to exchanger ratio of 1:3. The optimized optodes were employed for quantification of cyanide content added to potable water and saliva.

Abstract
A series of 5,10,15-triarylcorroles has been prepared, with the meso-aryl rings functionalized with different substituents to investigate their influence on the aryl ring rotation with respect to the corrole plane. The study has been carried out by different NMR techniques, allowing the complete assignment of the 1H NMR spectra and giving insights on the kinetic and thermodynamic factors driving the atropisomerism in triarylcorrole derivatives.

Abstract
Two different copper and gallium arylcorroles have been functionalized using the Vilsmeier-Haack reaction. A further Knoevenagel reaction with cyanoacetic acid was performed on both complexes, affording the desired products with yields above 90 %. The newly synthesized compounds have been thoroughly characterized by a combination of spectroscopic methods, optical analyses, and X-ray crystallography. Moreover, they have been tested as anchoring groups for the hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles. The morphology of the heterogeneous composites has been studied by SEM, EDS and fluorescence microscopy analyses, thus confirming the presence of the corrole macrocycle in the hybrid material.

Abstract
Silver corrolates are attractive compounds from both practical and theoretical points of view. Indeed, they play a key role in peripheral functionalization reactions occurring at the macrocycle, enabling high-yield and regioselective group insertions useful to further elaborate the molecular skeleton. In parallel, the Janus innocent or noninnocent behavior of the corrole ligand in these complexes makes their description particularly challenging. Herein, we report properties for a series of silver 3,17-disubstituted triarylcorrole complexes with various functionalities (halogens or different phenylethynyl units) that deeply affect the electron density in the macrocyclic ligand, with obvious repercussions on the observed spectral characteristics. The compounds were obtained in yields of 54-92% by applying the Stille coupling reaction with the appropriate tributylethynyl stannane. Among the complexes prepared was a derivative bearing two terminal acetylenic units which opens the way to "click" reactions for new corrole-based architectures. This corrole was structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The addition of substituted ethynyl groups resulted in red-shifts of the electronic absorption spectra, the largest of which was observed for the compound with two β-NO2-Ph-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C substituents. The remarkable influence of the NO2 groups on the electron density of this macrocycle was further demonstrated by electrochemical measurements, where an easier reduction of this complex derivative was observed as compared to the others. DFT calculations showed full delocalization over the entire p-nitrophenylethynyl unit of 5, largely affecting orbital distributions and the corresponding electronic absorptions. Although a variation of the β-substituents dramatically modifies the Soret- and Q-band positions towards lower energies for all the examined complexes, the saddling of the macrocycle resulting from functionalization is only moderate. The collected results suggest the description of these compounds as AgIII-corrolate3-, a metallocorrole with an innocent macrocyclic ligand.

Abstract
We report a low-cost sensing platform for effective naked-eye detection of fluoride ion in aqueous media. The sensor is based on silicon complex of 5,10,15-tritolylcorrole (SiTTCorr) deposited on paper support and designed in a particular way that permits it to perform in a unique sensing event an internal sensor self-calibration and subsequent analysis of fluoride ion in a concentration range from 20 [Formula: see text]g/L to 200 mg/L with a LOD 9 [Formula: see text]g/L, much lower than the WHO guideline value of 1.5 mg/L for fluoride in drinking water. The influence of tetradodecylammonium chloride (TDACl) anion exchanger addition to the performance of SiTTCorr-based sensors was studied and the sensor with optimal ionophore: exchanger [Formula: see text] 2:1 ratio demonstrated the highest sensitivity. The evident color variation of SiTTCorr-based optode from dark pink to intense green occurred upon addition of increasing concentrations of fluoride. A smartphone application equipped with home-written color intensity analysis software as a detector of developed sensor output permitted fluoride content quantification in bottled water and toothpaste samples. Moreover, since at the quantification step the SiTTCorr color variation was significant for the red component of visible light and increase of fluoride content evidently changed this color from red to yellow and then to green, the developed optode was compared to a kind of chemical traffic light, able to detect the presence of fluoride in permitted, borderline or dangerous concentrations, respectively.

Abstract
A star-shaped array, consisting in four tetraphenylporphyrin fused to a phthalocyanine central unit by pyrazine groups, is constructed via the condensation reaction of a dicyanoquinoxaline annulated to a porphyrin ring. The nature of the annulated group is critical for the success of the reaction; in the case of smaller linkers, such as a dicyanopyrazine unit, a nucleophilic substitution occurred, giving the corresponding alcoxy derivative in alcoholic solvents. The visible spectrum of the array shows the typical absorptions of the macrocyclic sub units. The synthetic pathway here presented opens the way to the preparation of [Formula: see text]-fused porphyrin-phthalocyanine arrays.

Abstract
The tetraferrocenylporphyrin synthetic procedure was performed varying different reaction conditions. Mg, Mn, Pd and Cd complexes were synthesized and preliminarily studied. The results obtained show that the synthetic procedure strongly depends on catalyst, solvent and reagents concentration, even more than what observed with similar tetraarylporphyrins; concentration of substrates plays an important role in determining the outcome of the reactions.

Abstract
Functionalization of corrole at its peripheral positions is an intriguing field of research, since the unusual reactivity of this macrocycle usually makes it difficult to predict the reaction products. We have investigated the introduction of halogen atoms at the corrole β-positions by using haloacids as reagents. Different behavior, in terms of number and position of the units introduced, was observed: chlorination yielded mono and disubstituted corrole, whereas bromination only afforded mono-substitution, even if on different positions. Iodination did not occur on the corrole free base, while the protection of the inner core by chelation with silver ion gave better results and a symmetric diiodinated corrole was isolated. 2D NMR analysis and X-ray crystallography provided useful information about the site of these corrole functionalizations.

Abstract
After the definition of efficient synthetic routes for the preparation of triarylcorroles, the functionalization of these macrocycles is becoming a necessary and challenging field of research. One important synthetic step is the introduction of substituents able to influence the electronic distribution in the macrocyclic ring. A valuable target would be a corrole macrocycle with some β-pyrrole positions occupied by methyl groups, while exploiting other positions to introduce electron-withdrawing substituents. To explore the scope of this approach, we investigated the bromination and the nitration of the corrole ring and the desired products have been obtained in moderate to good yield. The successful preparation of selectively halogenated corroles is particularly interesting since they are suitable substrates for the preparation of more complex partially alkylated structures using modern cross coupling methodologies.

Abstract
The phenyl-iron complex of 5,10,15-tritolylcorrole was prepared by reaction of the starting chloro-iron complex with phenylmagnesium bromide in dichloromethane. The organometallic complex was fully characterized by a combination of spectroscopic methods, X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All of these techniques support the description of the electronic structure of this phenyl-iron derivative as a low-spin iron(IV) coordinated to a closed-shell corrolate trianion and to a phenyl monoanion. Complete assignments of the (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra of the phenyl-iron derivative and the starting chloro-iron complex were performed on the basis of the NMR spectra of the regioselectively β-substituted bromo derivatives and the DFT calculations.

Abstract
In this manuscript a multitechnique approach is proposed to characterize the interaction between new tri-N-methylpyridyl corrole (TMPC) and its germanium(IV) derivative (GeTMPC), with single- and double-stranded nucleic acid homopolymers and calf thymus DNA. The specificity of each spectroscopic technique has been exploited to analyze the different aspects of corrole binding. Noteworthy, this approach allows us to distinguish between H aggregation of TMPC in the presence of polyriboadenilic acid (poly(rA)) and J aggregates in the presence of polyribocytidinic acid (poly(rC)) as well as to identify the formation of GeTMPC dimers in the presence of single-stranded poly(rA) and pseudointercalation with single-stranded poly(rC).

Abstract
Functionalization of the β-pyrrolic positions of the corrole macrocycle with -NO(2) groups is limited at present to metallocorrolates due to the instability exhibited by corrole free bases under oxidizing conditions. A careful choice of the oxidant can limit the transformation of corroles into decomposition products or isocorrole species, preserving the corrole aromaticity, and thus allowing the insertion of nitro groups onto the corrole framework. Here we report results obtained by reacting 5,10,15-tritolylcorrole (TTCorrH(3)) with the AgNO(2)/NaNO(2) system, to give mono- and dinitrocorrole derivatives when stoichiometry is carefully controlled. Reactions were found to be regioselective, affording the 3-NO(2)TTCorrH(3) and 3,17-(NO(2))(2)TTCorrH(3) isomers as the main products in the case of mono- and disubstitution, in 53 and 20% yields, respectively. In both cases, traces of other mono- and disubstituted isomers were detected, which were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The influence of the β-nitro substituents on the corrole properties is studied in detail by UV-visible, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical characterization of these functionalized corroles. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations of the ground and excited state properties of these β-nitrocorrole derivatives also afforded significant information, closely matching the experimental observations. It is found that the β-NO(2) substituents conjugate with the π-aromatic system of the macrocycle, which initiates significant changes in both the spectroscopic and redox properties of the so functionalized corroles. This effect is more pronounced when the nitro group is introduced at the 2-position, because in this case the conjugation is, for steric reasons, more efficient than in the 3-nitro isomer.

Abstract
The modification of peripheral positions of corroles by introduction of nitro groups is an important functionalization of this macrocycle. The nitro substituent strongly influences the corrole behavior leading to the preparation of macrocycles with different properties, which can be of interest for their exploitation as catalysts, sensing layers in chemical sensors or in the field of supramolecular chemistry. In the last few years we have developed different routes for the β-nitration of the corrole ring, and we report here novel synthetic protocols which can allow the formation of tri- and tetranitro derivatives, as demonstrated by X-ray analysis. In all of the methodologies used, the presence of isocorrole species as reaction intermediates was established, which regenerated the corresponding corrole by metal insertion.

Abstract
Two different methods for the regioselective nitration of different meso-triarylcorroles leading to the corresponding β-substituted nitrocorrole iron complexes have been developed. A two-step procedure affords three Fe(III) nitrosyl products-the unsubstituted corrole, the 3-nitrocorrole, and the 3,17-dinitrocorrole. In contrast, a one-pot synthetic approach drives the reaction almost exclusively to formation of the iron nitrosyl 3,17-dinitrocorrole. Electron-releasing substituents on the meso-aryl groups of the triarylcorroles induce higher yields and longer reaction times than what is observed for the synthesis of similar triarylcorroles with electron-withdrawing functionalities, and these results can be confidently attributed to the facile formation and stabilization of an intermediate iron corrole π-cation radical. Electron-withdrawing substituents on the meso-aryl groups of triarylcorrole also seem to labilize the axial nitrosyl group which, in the case of the pentafluorophenylcorrole derivative, results in the direct formation of a disubstituted iron μ-oxo dimer complex. The influence of meso-aryl substituents on the progress and products of the nitration reaction was investigated. In addition, to elucidate the most important factors which influence the redox reactivity of these different iron nitrosyl complexes, selected compounds were examined by cyclic voltammetry and thin-layer UV-visible or FTIR spectroelectrochemistry in CH(2)Cl(2).

Abstract
Different strategies for the demetalation of corrole complexes have been developed, using copper complexes of corrole as model compounds. Best results were obtained using the acidic mixture CHCl 3/ H 2 SO 4, which allowed the almost complete removal of copper ions from both meso-triaryl-, β-octaalkyl- and fully substituted corroles. This route reduced both the decomposition of the starting complex and the formation of isocorrole species produced by oxidation of the corrole ring in the acidic conditions necessary for the demetalation reaction. To investigate the scope of the reaction, the same approach was later extended to other metal complexes of corrole, such as cobalt, manganese, iron and germanium derivatives. Although not always successful, this approach demonstrated that in the case of corrole it is also possible to obtain a reversible coordination of metal ions, a route of synthetic interest for further functionalization of the corrole ring.

Abstract
Cavitand- Zn porphyrin conjugates self-assemble to give supramolecular (1 + 1) structures upon coordination of bifunctional ligands such as 4,4'-bipyridine and the like. The formation of the capsule depends on key structural factors, such as the size of the cavity, and the possibility of the onset of hydrogen bonds, π–π and π–cation interactions. The extension of this protocol to chiral bifunctional ligands, such as (+)-cinchonine and (−)-cinchonidine, and cinchona alkaloid derivatives, results in the achievement of supramolecular structures with chiral cavities, whose configuration is dependent on the asymmetry of the bound ditopic ligand. MM calculations, gave further insights into the plausible geometry of the structures.

Abstract
The reaction of 5,10,15-tritolylcorrole with EtMgBr opens the way for novel functionalizations of the corrole ring. DDQ oxidation of the macrocycle, followed by addition of the Grignard reagent, led to the formation of 5- and 10-alkyl substituted isocorroles in satisfying yields. Together with the one-pot formation of these isocorrole isomers, the use of such a nucleophile evidenced the competitive reactivity of the macrocycle β-positions, leading to the formation of 2-bromo- and 3-bromo-5,10,15-tritolylcorrole. While the formation of these monobromocorrole derivatives is not unprecedented, this is the first time the isomers have been separated and fully characterized. Furthermore, the higher yields of the 2-substituted species highlight a useful regioselectivity for the substitution reaction.

Abstract
A series of free-base and metalated isocorroles represented as (TT-n-iso-Cor)H(2) and (TT-n-iso-Cor)M(II), where n = 5 or 10 and M = Ni or Cu, were synthesized and characterized by electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry in CH(2)Cl(2) containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate. The metalation of the free-base macrocycles with Co(II), Mn(III), or Zn(II) was also attempted but was unsuccessful. Six isocorroles were isolated and shown to undergo two stepwise oxidations to give pi-cation radicals and dications in CH(2)Cl(2), with the most stable products being obtained in the case of the 10-substituted derivatives. The same isocorroles could also be reduced by one or two electrons, but the initial one-electron addition products are unstable and undergo a rapid chemical reaction giving a reduced corrole or corrole-like product, which could be reoxidized to the corresponding (TTCor)M at a controlled positive potential. This series of reactions effectively illustrates an isocorrole to corrole conversion upon reduction and reoxidation and was monitored by both electrochemistry and thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry.

Abstract
The reaction of 5,10,15-triarylcorrole with 4-amino-4H-1,2,4-triazole provides another example of corrole ring expansion to give the corresponding 6-azahemiporphycene, a novel porphyrin analogue. The facile oxidation of the corrole ring is a required step for the ring expansion and for this reason the reaction fails in the case of corroles bearing meso-phenyl groups carrying electron-withdrawing substituents. Steric requirements also limited the scope of the reaction, which is not successful in the case of 2,6-disubstituted meso-aryl corroles. The occurrence of an initial oxidation is further supported by formation of the 6-azahemiporphycene derivative when the reaction is carried out under the same conditions, using a 5- or a 10-isocorrole as starting material. (1)H NMR spectra and X-ray crystal characterization of 6-azahemiporphycene evidenced the presence of an intramolecular N-H...N hydrogen bond in the inner core of the macrocycle, while photophysical characterization confirmed the aromatic character of the novel macrocycle, showing an intense Soret-like band around 410 nm in the absorption spectrum. The fluorescence emission is very modest, and 6-azahemiporphycene showed higher photostability than the corresponding corrole species. Different metal complexes of 6-azahemiporphycene were prepared following synthetic protocols usually exploited for the preparation of metalloporphyrins, demonstrating good coordination properties for the macrocycle. Both the free-base and metal derivatives were characterized by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry in dichloromethane and benzonitrile. To further detail the behavior of this novel macrocycle, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out on the basic structure of 6-azahemiporphycene with the aim of assessing aromaticity and tautomerism, as well as calculating its stability with respect to the 5-aza isomer.

Abstract
Nanostructured molecular assemblies may provide additional sensing properties not found in other arrangements of the same basic constituents. Among three-dimensional structures, nanotubes are particularly appealing for applications as chemical sensors, because of the potential inclusion of different guests inside the cavity or the induced modification of the skeletal interaction after analyte binding. Porphyrins are a class of compounds characterized by brilliant sensing properties, appearing also in non-ordered solid-state aggregates. In recent years, it was reported that aggregation of oppositely charged porphyrins led to the formation of self-assembled nanotubes and in this paper their sensing properties, both in solution and in the solid state, have been investigated. The interactions of porphyrin nanotubes with guest molecules have been monitored by following the changes in their UV-vis spectra. The results obtained have been exploited to build up a sensing platform based on a computer screen as a light source and a digital camera as detector. Porphyrin nanostructures exhibited an enhanced sensitivity to different compounds with respect to those shown by single porphyrin subunits. The reason for the increased sensitivity may be likely found in an additional sensing mechanism related to the modulation of the strength of the forces that keep the supramolecular ensemble together.

Abstract
During 2004 and 2005 we selected ten motivated and well informed patients affected by hepatic cirrhosis and medium-large esophageal varices; we performed endoscopic band ligation to prevent the first bleeding episode in these patients because not eligible for non selective beta-blockers full dose therapy. After over 3 years' follow-up we have no found fatal or not varices related complications. Five patients died from hepatic failure. Recent literature highlights endoscopic band ligation usefulness because of favourable cost-effectiveness ratio and good quality of life in well selected patients treated by a skilled endoscopic team.
