Abstract
Although the magnetosensitivity to weak magnetic fields, such as the geomagnetic field, which was exhibited by radical pairs that are potentially responsible for avian navigation, has been previously investigated by spin dynamics simulations, understanding this behavior for proposed radical pairs in other species is limited. These include, for example, radical pairs formed in the single-cell green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (CraCRY) and in Columba livia (ClCRY4). In addition, the radical pair of FADH• with the one-electron reduced cyclobutane thymine dimer that was shown to be sensitive to weak magnetic fields has been of interest. In this work, we investigated the directional magnetosensitivity of these radical pairs to a weak magnetic field by spin dynamics simulations. We find significant reduction in the magnetosensitivity by inclusion of dipolar and exchange interactions, which can be mitigated by a scavenging radical, as demonstrated for the [FAD•- TyrD•] radical pair in CraCRY, but not for the [FADH• T□T•-] radical pair because of the large exchange coupling. The directional magnetosensitivity of the ClCRY4 [FAD•- TyrE•] radical pair can survive this adverse effect even without the scavenging reaction, possibly motivating further experimental exploration.

Abstract
In an effort to elucidate the origin of avian magnetoreception, it was postulated that a radical-pair formed in a cryptochrome upon light activation provided the basis for the mechanism that enables an inclination compass sensitive to the geomagnetic field. Photoreduction in this case involves formation of a flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD)-tryptophan (TRP) radical-pair, following electron transfer within a conserved TRP triad in the cryptochrome. Recently, an animal-like cryptochrome from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (CraCRY) was analyzed, demonstrating the role of a fourth aromatic residue, which serves as a terminal electron donor in the photoreduction pathway, resulting in the creation of a more distal radical-pair and exhibiting fast electron transfer. In this work, we investigated the electron transfer in CraCRY with a combination of free energy molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, frozen density functional theory, and QM/MM MD simulations, supporting the suggestion of a proton coupled electron transfer mechanism. Spin dynamics simulations discerned details on the dependence of the singlet yield on the direction of the external magnetic field for the [FAD•- TYRH•+] and [FAD•- TYR•] radical-pairs in CraCRY, in comparison with the previously modeled [FAD•- TRPH•+] radical-pair.

Salidroside Reduces Inflammation and Brain Injury After Permanent Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion in Rats by Regulating PI3K/PKB/Nrf2/NFκB Signaling Rather than Complement C3 Activity. Abstract
Salidroside, an active constituent of Rhodiola rosea, is neuroprotective after transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO). However, its effects in other experimental stroke models are less understood. Here, we investigated the effect of daily intraperitoneal injections of salidroside in rats after permanent MCAO (pMCAO). Cerebral infarct volumes at 1 day after pMCAO were significantly reduced by treatment with 100 mg/kg/day salidroside, but not by 25 or 50 mg/kg/day, and this benefit of salidroside increased significantly over at least 7 days of treatment, when it was also accompanied by decreased neurological deficit scores. These observations led us to investigate the underlying mechanism of action of salidroside. 100 mg/kg salidroside for 1 day increased NeuN, Nrf2, and its downstream mediator HO-1, while it reduced nuclear NFκB p50, IL-6, and TNFα. Brusatol, a Nrf2 inhibitor, blocked the actions of salidroside on Nrf2, NFκB p50, IL-6, and TNFα. Salidroside also increased the ratio of p-PKB/PKB at 1 day after pMCAO even in the presence of brusatol. LY294002, a PI3K inhibitor, prevented all these effects of salidroside, including those on NeuN, p-PKB/PKB, Nrf2, HO-1, and pro-inflammatory mediators. In contrast, salidroside had no significant effect on the level of cerebral complement C3 after pMCAO, or on the activity of C3 as measured by the expression of cerebral Egr1. Our findings therefore suggest that salidroside reduces neuroinflammation and neural damage by regulating the PI3K/PKB/Nrf2/NFκB signaling pathway after pMCAO, and that this neuroprotective effect does not involve modulation of complement C3 activity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Many reports show that denture adhesives improve the retention and stability of dentures. However, few randomized controlled trials have examined the effects of denture adhesives. OBJECTIVE This 10-center randomized controlled trial with parallel groups involving 200 edentulous patients wearing complete dentures aimed to evaluate the effects of short-term use of cream and powder denture adhesives. METHODS Patients were allocated into 2 cream- and powder-type adhesive groups and 1 control group. Intervention groups were treated with the 2 adhesives (1 each), and the control group received saline solution. Adhesive or control was applied to the denture-mucosal surface for 4 d, and data at baseline and after day 4 of intervention (i.e., 8 meals) were obtained. Patient satisfaction was evaluated with a 100-mm visual analog scale. Oral health-related quality of life was measured with the Japanese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile for Edentulous Patients. Perceived chewing ability was evaluated by a questionnaire regarding ease of chewing and swallowing food. Between-group comparisons were performed with Kruskal-Wallis tests with the Mann-Whitney U test adjusted by Bonferroni correction. Within-group comparisons of pre- and postintervention measurements were performed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Intention-to-treat analysis was also performed. RESULTS Between-group comparisons showed no significant differences for general satisfaction or Oral Health Impact Profile for Edentulous Patients. However, significant differences in satisfaction with various denture functions with cream- and powder-type adhesives were seen in pre- and postintervention comparisons (P < 0.05). Significant differences were also observed for perceived chewing ability of hard foods (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION These results suggest that although denture adhesives do not invariably improve denture function, they do affect subjective evaluations and possibly chewing of hard foods. Therefore, the effects of denture adhesive use are insufficient to resolve any fundamental dissatisfaction with dentures ( ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01712802 ). KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT The results of this study suggest that denture adhesives should be applied under certain conditions; however, an appropriate diagnosis is important before application. These practice-based data provide information to establish evidence-based guidelines for applying denture adhesives.

Abstract
Motivated by the observations on the involvement of light-induced processes in the Drosophila melanogaster cryptochrome (DmCry) in regulation of the neuronal firing rate, which is achieved by a redox-state change of its voltage-dependent K+ channel Kvβ subunit hyperkinetic (Hk) reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) cofactor, we propose in this work two hypothetical pathways that may potentially enable such coupling. In the first pathway, triggered by blue-light-induced formation of a radical pair [FAD•-TRP•+] in DmCry, the hole (TRP•+) may hop to Hk, for example, through a tryptophan chain and oxidize NADPH, possibly leading to inhibition of the N-terminus inactivation in the K+ channel. In a second possible pathway, DmCry's FAD•- is reoxidized by molecular oxygen, producing H2O2, which then diffuses to Hk and oxidizes NADPH. In this work, by applying a combination of quantum and empirical-based methods for free-energy calculations, we find that the oxidation of NADPH by TRP•+ or H2O2 and the reoxidation of FAD•- by O2 are thermodynamically feasible. Our results may have an implication in identifying a magnetic sensing signal transduction pathway, specifically upon Drosophila's Hk NADPH cofactor oxidation, with a subsequent inhibition of the K+ channel N-terminus inactivation gate, permitting K+ flux.

Abstract
We report on the design, manufacture, and testing of an ultra-compact telescope for 16 unit (16U) CubeSats for Earth and space observation. This telescope provides 1 arcsec resolution at a 2.9 degree field of view. Dimensions are optimized to 230 × 230 × 330mm3 with a mass of less than 6kg including support structure. Our catadioptric 5-element design consists of a full-aperture corrector, a Mangin primary mirror (PM), a secondary mirror (SM), and a 2-lens field corrector. The focal length is 745mm, and squared-circular aperture has an equivalent diameter of 241mm. The designed modulation transfer function (MTF) is 0.275 for the entire unit including baffles at a Nyquist frequency of 161 cycles/mm for the 450-800nm band. As one of the distinguishing features of our state-of-the-art design, all optical surfaces are spherical to simplify adjustment. For the best thermal stability, all optical elements are produced from fused silica. We describe the details of design, adjustment, and laboratory performance tests for space environments in accordance with the requirements for in-orbit operation onboard Earth-observation micro-satellites to be launched in 2018.

Abstract
PURPOSE Dental faculties in Japan have organised many short-term international exchange programs to enable their undergraduates to study abroad. However, not many students apply for those programs. In this present study, we attempted to clarify the factors that discourage undergraduate dental students from studying abroad. METHODS We administered a questionnaire survey to 512 undergraduate dental students in three national universities located in different areas in Japan. RESULTS Although 61.7% of the participants expressed interest in studying abroad, only 19.1% of them had prior experiences of study abroad or plans to do so. Their main worries were about lack of sufficient language ability in academic fields. Comparing those who were interested in studying abroad with those who were not revealed significant differences regarding their concern about lack of language ability and lack of specialised knowledge in dentistry. Participants who did not want to study abroad indicated that they did not perceive a purpose in doing so and cited not having foreign friends as a problem. Household income was significantly correlated with concerns about overall expenses. CONCLUSION Overall, language ability and academic knowledge appeared to be the two strongest factors affecting dental students' consideration of studying abroad. Dental schools in Japan can use the findings of this study to improve their undergraduate exchange programs in such a way as to stimulate greater interest amongst their students.

Abstract
Until recently, few prognostic signatures for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients receiving 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-based chemotherapy could be used in clinical practice. Here, using transcriptional profiles for a panel of cancer cell lines and three cohorts of CRC patients, we developed a prognostic signature based on within-sample relative expression orderings (REOs) of six gene pairs for stage II-III CRC patients receiving 5-FU-based chemotherapy. This REO-based signature had the unique advantage of being insensitive to experimental batch effects and free of the impractical data normalization requirement. After stratifying 184 CRC samples with multi-omics data from The Cancer Genome Atlas into two prognostic groups using the REO-based signature, we further revealed that patients with high recurrence risk were characterized by frequent gene copy number aberrations reducing 5-FU efficacy and DNA methylation aberrations inducing distinct transcriptional alternations to confer 5-FU resistance. In contrast, patients with low recurrence risk exhibited deficient mismatch repair and carried frequent gene mutations suppressing cell adhesion. These results reveal the multi-omics landscapes determining prognoses of stage II-III CRC patients receiving 5-FU-based chemotherapy.

Bound Flavin-Cytochrome Model of Extracellular Electron Transfer in Shewanella oneidensis: Analysis by Free Energy Molecular Dynamics Simulations. J Phys Chem B 2016; 120:5617-24. Abstract
Flavins are known to enhance extracellular electron transfer (EET) in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 bacteria, which reduce electron acceptors through outer-membrane (OM) cytochromes c. Free-shuttle and bound-redox cofactor mechanisms were proposed to explain this enhancement, but recent electrochemical reports favor a flavin-bound model, proposing two one-electron reductions of flavin, namely, oxidized (Ox) to semiquinone (Sq) and semiquinone to hydroquinone (Hq), at anodic and cathodic conditions, respectively. In this work, to provide a mechanistic understanding of riboflavin (RF) binding at the multiheme OM cytochrome OmcA, we explored binding configurations at hemes 2, 5, 7, and 10. Subsequently, on the basis of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, binding free energies and redox potential shifts upon RF binding for the Ox/Sq and Sq/Hq reductions were analyzed. Our results demonstrated an upshift in the Ox/Sq and a downshift in the Sq/Hq redox potentials, consistent with a bound RF-OmcA model. Furthermore, binding free energy MD simulations indicated an RF binding preference at heme 7. MD simulations of the OmcA-MtrC complex interfacing at hemes 5 revealed a small interprotein redox potential difference with an electron transfer rate of 10(7)-10(8)/s.

Photoactivation of cryptochromes from Drosophila melanogaster and Sylvia borin: insight into the chemical compass mechanism by computational investigation. J Phys Chem B 2015; 119:3883-92. Abstract
Although behavioral studies demonstrated light-induced magnetoreception in the insect Drosophila melanogaster, gaining insight into the possibility that a radical-pair mechanism accounts for the magnetic response of the cryptochrome (DmCry1) is complicated by a number of factors. In addition, the mechanism of magnetoreception for the cryptochrome from the garden warbler bird Sylvia borin (gwCry1a), which demonstrated a long-lived radical pair by transient optical absorption measurements, has also not been rationalized. To assess potential feasibility of a radical-pair mechanism in DmCry1 and gwCry1a, formed by excitation and electron transfer between a Trp-triad and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), further separated by electron transfer within the triad, we applied a combination of theoretical methods, including homology modeling and molecular dynamics (MD) for structure refinement, high-level ab initio theory, and MD simulations using a polarizable force-field for prediction of pKa and the electron transfer rate. Calculated excitation energies, followed by electron transfer in model compounds of DmCry1 that assume proton transfer in conjunction with electron transfer from Trp (W420) to FAD and the predicted pKa for the proximate residue to FAD (Cys416), support a radical-pair mechanism. Furthermore, free-energy and reorganization energies for the Trp-triad in DmCry1 demonstrate facile electron transfer, explained by the local protein environment and exposure to solvent, which in turn enables a large enough distance separation for the radical-pair partners. Results for gwCry1a demonstrated the importance of accounting for relaxed excited-state geometries in validating the first stage of a radical-pair mechanism. This work provides insight into the so-called chemical compass mechanism to explain magnetic-field sensing in DmCry1 and gwCry1a, expanding on previous work on the cyrptochrome from the plant Arabidopsis thaliana (Solov'yov et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 18046-18052. Solov'yov et al., Sci. Rep. 2014, 4, 1-8.).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although many DNA methylation (DNAm) alterations observed in peripheral whole blood/leukocytes and serum have been considered as potential diagnostic markers for cancer, their origin and their specificity for cancer (e.g., vs inflammatory diseases) remain unclear. METHODS From publicly available datasets, we identified changes in the methylation of blood-borne DNA for multiple cancers and inflammatory diseases. We compared the identified changes with DNAm difference between myeloid and lymphoid cells extracted from two datasets. RESULTS At least 94.7% of the differentially methylated DNA loci (DM loci) observed in peripheral whole blood/leukocytes and serum of cancer patients overlapped with DM loci that distinguish between myeloid and lymphoid cells and >99.9% of the overlapped DM loci had consistent alteration states (hyper- or hypomethylation) in cancer samples compared to normal controls with those in myeloid cells compared to lymphoid cells (binomial test, P-value <2.2 × 10(-16)). Similar results were observed for DM loci in peripheral whole blood/leukocytes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel diseases. The direct comparison between DM loci observed in the peripheral whole blood/leukocytes of patients with inflammatory diseases and DM loci observed in the peripheral whole blood of patients with cancer showed that DM loci detected from cancer and inflammatory diseases also had significantly consistent alteration states (binomial test, P-value <2.2 × 10(-16)). CONCLUSIONS DNAm changes observed in the peripheral whole blood/leukocytes and serum of cancer patients and in the peripheral whole blood/leukocytes of inflammatory disease patients are predominantly determined by the increase of myeloid cells and the decrease of lymphoid cells under the disease conditions, in the sense that their alteration states in disease samples compared to normal controls mainly reflect the DNAm difference between myeloid and lymphoid cells. These analyses highlight the importance of comparing cancer and inflammatory disease directly for the identification of cancer-specific diagnostic biomarkers.

Abstract
In this work, to explain doping behavior of single-layer graphene upon HSSYWYAFNNKT (P1) and HSSAAAAFNNKT (P1-3A) adsorption in field-effect transistors (GFETs), we applied a combined computational approach, whereby peptide adsorption was modeled by molecular dynamics simulations, and the lowest energy configuration was confirmed by density functional theory calculations. On the basis of the resulting structures of the hybrid materials, electronic structure and transport calculations were investigated. We demonstrate that π-π stacking of the aromatic residues and proximate peptide backbone to the graphene surface in P1 have a role in the p-doping. These results are consistent with our experimental observation of the GFET's p-doping even after a 24-h annealing procedure. Upon substitution of three of the aromatic residues to Ala in (P1-3A), a considerable decrease from p-doping is observed experimentally, demonstrating n-doping as compared to the nonadsorbed device, yet not explained based on the atomistic MD simulation structures. To gain a qualitative understanding of P1-3A's adsorption over a longer simulation time, which may differ from aromatic amino acid residues' swift anchoring on the surface, we analyzed equilibrated coarse-grain simulations performed for 500 ns. Desorption of the Ala residues from the surface was shown computationally, which could in turn affect charge transfer, yet a full explanation of the mechanism of n-doping will require elucidation of differences between various aromatic residues as dependent on peptide composition, and inclusion of effects of the substrate and environment, to be considered in future work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE 3D high-resolution MR imaging can provide reliable information for defining the exact relationships between the intraparotid facial nerve and adjacent structures. The purpose of this study was to explore the clinical value of using a surface coil combined with a 3D-PSIF-DWI sequence in intraparotid facial nerve imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-one healthy volunteers underwent intraparotid facial nerve scanning at 3T by using the 3D-PSIF-DWI sequence with both the surface coil and the head coil. Source images were processed with MIP and MPR to better delineate the intraparotid facial nerve and its branches. In addition, the SIR of the facial nerve and parotid gland was calculated. The number of facial nerve branches displayed by these 2 methods was calculated and compared. RESULTS The display rates of the main trunk, divisions (cervicofacial, temporofacial), and secondary branches of the intraparotid facial nerve were 100%, 97.6%, and 51.4% by head coil and 100%, 100%, and 83.8% by surface coil, respectively. The display rate of secondary branches of the intraparotid facial nerve by these 2 methods was significantly different (P < .05). The SIRs of the intraparotid facial nerve/parotid gland in these 2 methods were significantly different (P < .05) at 1.37 ± 1.06 and 1.89 ± 0.87, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The 3D-PSIF-DWI sequence combined with a surface coil can better delineate the intraparotid facial nerve and its divisions than when it is combined with a head coil, providing better image contrast and resolution. The proposed protocol offers a potentially useful noninvasive imaging sequence for intraparotid facial nerve imaging at 3T.

Partial splenic artery embolization for thrombocytopenia and uncontrolled massive ascites after liver transplantation. Transplant Proc 2012; 44:755-6. Abstract
Thrombocytopenia (platelet < 60,000/mm(3)) and uncontrolled massive ascites (ascitic fluid > 1000 mL/d over 10 days) after liver transplantation (OLT), although uncommon, usually represent serious complications. Splenectomy is a useful treatment despite its many side effects. Recently, partial splenic artery embolization (PSAE) is considered to be a nonsurgical, less invasive treatment. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the results of PSAE after OLT. Between October 2008 and February 2010, 11 patients underwent PSAE after OLT due to thrombocytopenia (n = 6) or refractory ascites (RA; n = 5). Six patients (54.5%) were males and 3 (27.3%) were children. The primary liver disease was virus-related liver cirrhosis (n = 6), biliary atresia (n = 3), fulminant hepatitis (n = 1), or alcoholic liver cirrhosis (n = 1). Seven grafts were from living and four from deceased donors. The major axial size of spleen was 12.1 to 23.4 cm and its average embolized volume, 76.4% (range = 70%-80%). As the result, the platelet count significantly increased after PSAE in all patients maintaining values greater than 100,000/mm(3) in four thrombocytopenic patients (66.7%). Cases of RA showed marked decreases after PSAE (100%). The follow-up was 6 to 28 months. After PSAE, patients experienced abdominal pain (n = 9, 81.8%), fever (n = 2, 18.2%), and abdominal distension (n = 2, 18.2%). However, there was no serious complication after PSAE such as splenic abscess, rupture, pancreatic infarction, sepsis, or death. In conclusion, PSAE was effective and safe and can be the choice for thrombocytopenia or RA related to hypersplenism after OLT.

Inhibition of biocatalysis in [Fe-Fe] hydrogenase by oxygen: molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations. ACS Chem Biol 2012; 7:1268-75. Abstract
Designing O(2)-tolerant hydrogenases is a major challenge in applying [Fe-Fe]H(2)ases for H(2) production. The inhibition involves transport of oxygen through the enzyme to the H-cluster, followed by binding and subsequent deactivation of the active site. To explore the nature of the oxygen diffusion channel for the hydrogenases from Desulfovibrio desulfuricans (Dd) and Clostridium pasteurianum (Cp), empirical molecular dynamics simulations were performed. The dynamic nature of the oxygen pathways in Dd and Cp was elucidated, and insight is provided, in part, into the experimental observation on the difference of oxygen inhibition in Dd and the hydrogenase from Clostridium acetobutylicum (Ca, assumed homologous to Cp). Further, to gain an understanding of the mechanism of oxygen inhibition of the [Fe-Fe]H(2)ase, density functional theory calculations of model compounds composed of the H-cluster and proximate amino acids are reported. Confirmation of the experimentally based suppositions on inactivation by oxygen at the [2Fe](H) domain is provided, validating the model compounds used and oxidation state assumptions, further explaining the mode of damage. This unified approach provides insight into oxygen diffusion in the enzyme, followed by deactivation at the H-cluster.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE An RU486-inducible recombinant adenovirus-Nrf2 construct (Ad-RUNrf2) was constructed and expressed in H460 cells to determine whether Nrf2 gene expression can be regulated and to observe the effect of the adenovirus Ad-RUNrf2 on inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress and apoptotic factors that mediate paraquat (PQ)-induced A549 cell injury. METHODS The Nrf2 gene within the RU486 (mifepristone)-inducible system was introduced into an adenovirus vector. A549 cells were transfected with Ad-RUNrf2, and Nrf2 expression was detected using Western blotting and real time-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RT-PCR, Western blots and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were used for observing the effect of RU486-induced Nrf2 expression on the inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)), oxidative stress factors (catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA)) and apoptosis factors (caspase-3, caspase-9 and cytochrome C) that mediated PQ-induced A549 cell injury. RESULTS After infection of H460 cells by Ad-RUNrf2, RT-PCR and Western blot analyses showed that Nrf2 expression increased with additional RU486 doses. IL-6 and TNF-α protein and gene expression levels were significantly reduced, and IL-10 protein levels were significantly increased. Although IL-10 expression increased, it remained significantly lower than that of noninduced adenovirus infection and the simple virus exposure group. RU486 induced a significant reduction in MDA expression and increased CAT protein levels. Caspase-9 and caspase-3 protein and gene expression levels decreased in the RU486 induction group (p < 0.05). Cytochrome C protein levels were not significantly reduced, but its gene expression was significantly decreased (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Ad-RUNrf2 adenovirus was successfully constructed and can be stably expressed and regulated in cells. Ad-RUNrf2 can reduce PQ-induced inflammation, oxidative stress and apoptosis in A549 cells.

Design parameters for tuning the type 1 Cu multicopper oxidase redox potential: insight from a combination of first principles and empirical molecular dynamics simulations. Abstract
The redox potentials and reorganization energies of the type 1 (T1) Cu site in four multicopper oxidases were calculated by combining first principles density functional theory (QM) and QM/MM molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The model enzymes selected included the laccase from Trametes versicolor, the laccase-like enzyme isolated from Bacillus subtilis, CueO required for copper homeostasis in Escherichia coli, and the small laccase (SLAC) from Streptomyces coelicolor. The results demonstrated good agreement with experimental data and provided insight into the parameters that influence the T1 redox potential. Effects of the immediate T1 Cu site environment, including the His(N(δ))-Cys(S)-His(N(δ)) and the axial coordinating amino acid, as well as the proximate H(N)(backbone)-S(Cys) hydrogen bond, were discerned. Furthermore, effects of the protein backbone and side-chains, as well as of the aqueous solvent, were studied by QM/MM molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, providing an understanding of influences beyond the T1 Cu coordination sphere. Suggestions were made regarding an increase of the T1 redox potential in SLAC, i.e., of Met198 and Thr232 in addition to the axial amino acid Met298. Finally, the results of this work presented a framework for understanding parameters that influence the Type 1 Cu MCO redox potential, useful for an ever-growing range of laccase-based applications.

Biophysical properties of membrane-active peptides based on micelle modeling: a case study of cell-penetrating and antimicrobial peptides. J Phys Chem B 2011; 114:13726-35. Abstract
We investigated the molecular mechanisms of short peptides interacting with membrane-mimetic systems. Three short peptides were selected for this study: penetratin as a cell-penetrating peptide (CPP), and temporin A and KSL as antimicrobial peptides (AMP). We investigated the detailed interactions of the peptides with dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles, and the subsequent peptide insertion based on free energy calculations by using all-atomistic molecular dynamics simulations with the united atom force field and explicit solvent models. First, we found that the free energy barrier to insertion for the three peptides is dependent on the chemical composition of the micelles. Because of the favorable electrostatic interactions between the peptides and the headgroups of lipids, the insertion barrier into an SDS micelle is less than a DPC micelle. Second, the peptides' secondary structures may play a key role in their binding and insertion ability, particularly for amphiphilic peptides such as penetratin and KSL. The secondary structures with a stronger ability to bind with and insert into micelles are the ones that account for a smaller surface area of hydrophobic core, thus offering a possible criterion for peptide design with specific functionalities.
