Abstract
At the outer canopy, the white leaves of Actinidia kolomikta can turn pink but they stay white in A. polygama. We hypothesized that the different leaf colors in the two Actinidia species may represent different photoprotection strategies. To test the hypothesis, leaf optical spectra, anatomy, chlorophyll a fluorescence, superoxide (O2 ˙- ) concentration, photosystem II photo-susceptibility, and expression of anthocyanin-related genes were investigated. On the adaxial side, light reflectance was the highest for white leaves of A. kolomikta, followed by its pink leaves and white leaves of A. polygama, and the absorptance for white leaves of A. kolomikta was the lowest. Chlorophyll and carotenoid content of white and pink leaves in A. kolomikta were significantly lower than those of A. polygama, while the relative anthocyanin content of pink leaves was the highest. Chloroplasts of palisade cells of white leaves in A. kolomikta were not well developed with a lower maximum quantum efficiency of PSII than the other types of leaves (pink leaves of A. kolomikta and white leaves of A. Polygama at the inner/outer canopy). After high light treatment from the abaxial surface, Fv /Fm decreased to a larger extent for white leaves of A. kolomikta than pink leaf and white leaves of A. polygama, and its non-photochemical quenching was also the lowest. White leaves of A. kolomikta showed higher O2 ˙- concentration compared to pink leaves under the same strong irradiance. The expression levels of anthocyanin biosynthetic genes in pink leaves were higher than in white leaves. These results indicate that white leaves of A. kolomikta apply a reflection strategy for photoprotection, while pink leaves resist photoinhibition via anthocyanin accumulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have shown that miRNA (miR) can be stably detected in serum, and aberrant expression of various miRNAs has shown diagnostic value in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. However, the role of miRNA in the context of prognosis has not been extensively investigated. Our previous study reported that miR-22, miR-125b, and miR-15b in serum had potential for use as tumor markers for auxiliary diagnosing of NSCLC. Therefore, the objective of this study was to detect the levels of miR-22, miR-125b, and miR-15b in serum from NSCLC patients and explore the potential prognostic significance of the three selected miRNAs. METHODS The relative expression of miR-22, miR-125b, and miR-15b in 74 patients with advanced NSCLC in pre- and post-chemotherapy were detected by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Serum level of miR-125b significantly decreased after chemotherapy (p < 0.05) and the levels of miR-15b significantly increased (p < 0.01), while there was no change in the level of serum miR-22 (Z = 0.716, p > 0.05). Compared with pre-chemotherapy, serum miR-125b expression in advanced NSCLC patients of responders (CR + PR) were significantly decreased post-chemotherapy (p < 0.05); serum miR-15b expression in advanced NSCLC patients of responders (CR + PR) were increased (p < 0.01). The chemotherapy sensitivity of advanced NSCLC patients with high expression of miR-125b was lower than that of NSCLC patients with low expression (p < 0.05). The chemotherapy sensitivity of advanced NSCLC patients with high expression of miR-15b was higher than that of NSCLC patients with low expression (p < 0.05). High levels of serum miR-125b and low levels of serum miR-15b were related to poor overall survival (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The serum levels of miR-125b and miR-15b in advanced NSCLC patients were changed pre- and post-chemotherapy and these changes were associated with chemotherapeutic response. Serum miR-125b and miR-15b have certain potential clinical value for chemotherapeutic response in advanced NSCLC. The serum levels of miR-125b and miR-15b in patients with advanced NSCLC before treatment may be used to estimate the overall survival.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The lack of effective means for the early diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of the high mortality of NSCLC. This study aims to evaluate the clinical significance of serum mannan-binding lectin associated serine protease (MASP)-2 and isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) in the early diagnosis of NSCLC. METHODS The serum levels of MASP-2 and IDH1 were detected in 139 NSCLC patients, 46 patients with benign lung diseases and 61 healthy controls, using an enzyme linked immunosorbent method. The diagnostic significance in NSCLC of the two tumor markers were analyzed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. In addition, we compared the two markers with the current commonly used tumor marker cytokeratin 19 fragment (Cy¬fra21-1). RESULTS The serum levels of MASP-2 and IDH1 in the NSCLC patients were significantly higher than those of healthy controls and patients with benign lung diseases. The differences were statistically significant (p < 0.01). The combined sensitivity of MASP-2, IDH1, and Cyfra21-1 in the NSCLC was 68.3%, which was significantly higher than that of the single tumor marker (p < 0.01). The sensitivities of MASP-2 and IDH1 in detecting early NSCLC (stage I and stage II) were 39.0% and 41.5%, which were significantly higher than that of Cyfra21-1 (p < 0.05). The area under the ROC curves (AUCs) of MASP-2 and IDH1 in the diagnosis of NSCLC were 0.621, and 0.840, which were higher than that of Cyfra21-1 (AUC = 0.606). CONCLUSIONS Serum MASP-2 and IDH1 may be used as potential tumor markers for the auxiliary diagnosis and early diagnosis of NSCLC.

Abstract
The visible light–driven ZnS–TiO2/RGO nanocomposites, with good visible light–driven photocatalytic activity, utilizing graphene oxide as precursor, were successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal thermal method with graphene oxide as precursor. Ti4+ ions were derived from titanium dioxide powder (TiO2, P25) and tetrabutyl titanate. S2− ions and Zn2+ ions were provided by sodium sulfide and zinc acetate, respectively. The photocatalytic and absorbance activity of the nanocomposites was investigated through the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution. The results showed that the ZnS–TiO2/RGO nanocomposite prepared by tetrabutyl titanate exhibited better photocatalytic and adsorbance activity for methylene blue under visible light irradiation and its photocatalytic efficiency reached 90% in 60-min light irradiation, almost 1.5 times that of the synthesized ZnS–TiO2/RGO by P25, which was attributed to a cooperative reaction because of an increase of photo-absorption effect of graphene sheets and photocatalytic effect of ZnS nanoparticles. The adsorbance activity for ZnS–TiO2/RGO–tetrabutyl titanate) reached 48%, which was almost 1.7 times higher than that of ZnS–TiO2/RGO-P25 and almost 3.7 times higher than that of ZnS/RGO.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The lack of effective means for the early diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of the high mortality associated with this form of lung cancer. This study aims to explore the potential significance of serum miRNA in the auxiliary diagnosis of NSCLC. METHODS The relative serum levels of 10 miRNAs in 120 patients with NSCLC, 45 patients with benign lung diseases, and 45 healthy controls were detected using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were then used to analyze the significance of the expression of these 10 miRNAs in the diagnosis of NSCLC, as well as to compare them with the current commonly used tumor marker carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). RESULTS The serum levels of miR-125b and miR-22 in the NSCLC patients were significantly higher than those in the other two groups (p < 0.05), but the serum expression of miR-15b in the NSCLC patients was significantly lower than that in the other two groups (p < 0.01). The sensitivities of serum miR-22 and miR-15b in detecting early NSCLC (stage I + II) were significantly higher than that of CEA (p < 0.05). Area under the curves (AUCs) of serum miR-22, miR-125b, and miR-15b in the diagnosis of NSCLC were 0.725, 0.704, and 0.619, respectively, and the diagnostic significance of these three serum miRNAs for NSCLC was higher than that of serum CEA (AUC = 0.594). CONCLUSIONS Serum miRNAs have potential as NSCLC-screening tumor markers, and serum miR-22 and miR15b might be used as reference indexes for the early diagnosis of NSCLC in the future.

Abstract
Background Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is an important protein in the lectin pathway of the immune system. This study explores the association between MBL polymorphism and the susceptibility to tuberculosis (TB). The association between the MBL2 polymorphisms and serum MBL levels is also analyzed in the present study. Methods A total of 112 inpatients with pulmonary TB and 120 healthy controls were recruited to participate in this case–control study. Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism(PCR-RFLP) technology was used to genotype MBL gene (variants in −221Y/X and exon l codons 54 A/B). Serum MBL level was assayed by human MBL ELISA kit. Demographic data and exposure information were also obtained from the study participants. Results Genotypes YA/YA of MBL gene were more prevalent in the healthy control group than in the TB patient (P =0.038, OR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.34-0.97) and genotypes XA/XA were less frequent in the healthy control group (P =0.007, OR, 6.42; 95% CI, 1.39-29.67). The resistant diplotype was more frequently found in the younger patients and retreatment cases with TB in MBL gene sites −221Y/X or codon 54 A/B. X/Y and A/B polymorphisms were strong determinants of serum MBL levels. Conclusion The polymorphisms of MBL gene may be associated with susceptibility to TB and the recurrence of TB. The YA/YA may be a protected diplotype against TB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many tumor markers have been analyzed for applications in diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of cancer. Currently chemotherapy is routinely performed for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The purpose of this study was to examine the serum tumor biomarker of cytokeratin (CK)-3A9 level in patients with NSCLC and its potential correlation with chemotherapeutic response. METHODS The serum samples of 196 NSCLC patients, 84 healthy controls, and 87 benign lung disease patients were provided for measurement of CK-3A9 and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Serum CK-3A9 concentration was examined using a chemoluminescent method. The potential correlation between serum CK18-3A9 concentration and chemotherapeutic response was analyzed in 124 patients with advanced NSCLC (stages III and IV). RESULTS The serum CK-3A9 levels in NSCLC patients pre-chemotherapy were significantly higher than those of healthy controls and benign lung disease patients (p < 0.01). CK-3A9 was related to Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) stages (p < 0.01) and histological classification (p < 0.05), but not related to age, gender, smoking status, and chemotherapy regimen (all p > 0.05). The testing results of serum CK-3A9 levels showed a higher sensitivity than that for CEA (48.2% and 39.5%, respectively). The chemotherapeutic response in the 124 patients with advanced NSCLC included 0 complete response (CR), 50 partial response (PR), 65 no change (NC), and 9 progression disease (PD). Post-chemotherapy CK-3A9 levels were significantly decreased compared to pre-chemotherapy (p < 0.05). The serum CK-3A9 levels in patients who achieved PR declined significantly compared to those who did not respond (SD + PD) after 2 cycles chemotherapy (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS CK-3A9 appeared to be a new biomarker for reliable, cost-effective prediction of the efficacy of chemotherapy in patients with advanced NSCLC, although the results should be confirmed in larger studies.

Abstract
Background In this study, we aimed to establish the rabbit VX2 limb tumor model, and then prepare a “necrotic zone” as a safe margin by volumetric modulated arc therapy and simultaneous integrated boost (VMAT-SIB) technique applied in the areas where the tumor is located adjacent to the bone (GTVboost area). Material/Methods Rabbits in the control group (n=10) were not treated, while those in the test group (n=10) were treated with the SIB schedule delivering a dose of 40Gy, 35Gy, 30Gy, and 25Gy to the GTVboost, GTV (gross tumor volume), CTV (clinical target volume), and PTV (planning target volume) in 10 fractions. Magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging (MRDWI), 3-dimensional power Doppler angiography (3D-PDA), and histological changes were observed after radiotherapy. Results After radiotherapy, the two groups showed a significant difference in the GTVboost area. In the test group, the tumor necrosis showed a significantly low signal in DWI and high signal in apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps. The 3D-PDA observation showed that tumor vascular structures decreased significantly. Histological analysis demonstrated that a necrotic zone could be generated in the GTVboost area, and microscopic examination observed cell necrosis and fibroplasia. Conclusions This studies demonstrated the feasibility of using VMAT-SIB technique in the rabbit VX2 limb tumor model. The formation of a necrotic zone can be effectively defined as safe margin in the GTVboost area. showing potential clinical applicability.

Abstract
Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) remains one of the most important infectious diseases worldwide. Several studies have suggested that genetic factors may affect the susceptibility to PTB, but the specific genes involved have not been fully characterized. The gene for monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) has been linked to an increased risk of tuberculosis in some Mexican and Korean populations. To explore the role of the MCP-1 gene in the susceptibility to PTB in a North Chinese population, we evaluated the association between MCP-1 -2518A/G gene polymorphisms and the risk for tuberculosis. Polymerase chain reaction amplification of genomic DNA followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis was used. There was a significant increase in the frequency of the GG genotype of MCP-1 -2518 in 136 patients with PTB compared to that in 152 healthy controls (P = 0.008, X(2) = 7.133, odds ratio = 1.96). Similarly, the frequencies of the A/G alleles in the 2 groups differed; the frequency of allele G was higher in patients with PTB (P = 0.011, X(2) = 6.428, odds ratio = 1.536). In conclusion, the -2518A/G polymorphism in the MCP-1 gene was found to be associated with an increased susceptibility to PTB in a North Chinese population.

Abstract
Nondestructive preoperative breast imaging techniques are widely used for breast cancer testing and diagnosis. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of quantitative diagnosis via the thermal analysis of abnormal metabolism. Nine hundred forty-eight women who underwent breast biopsy from 2009 to 2013 were investigated. Thermal analysis was used to calculate the internal heat source (i.e., tumor) thermal power for each participant. The applicability and effectiveness of our approach were estimated using the chi-square test, kappa statistics (k), and odds ratios (OR). Breast density and tumor size were considered during this estimation. A thermal power q = 0.2 w was determined as the optimal separation threshold between breast cancer and benign disease. Moreover, good agreement (k = 0.837) with the gold-standard assessment (breast biopsy) was confirmed in 93.2% of the patients (N = 884/948), and the sensitivity and specificity were 94.2 and 92.9%, respectively. The results also found no significant differences in methodological accuracy between the fatty and dense breasts (OR = 1.194, P = 0.524). Furthermore, after dividing the cohort into three groups according to tumor size (T1: <2 cm; T2: 2 to 5 cm; T3: >5 cm), the tumor size had no effect on the proposed method (ORs = 1, P = 0.724). Internal heat source analysis can feasibly and efficiently distinguish between breast cancer and benign disease.

Abstract
Background The important role of angiogenesis displaying in tumor development and metastasis has been generally realized. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and endostatin (ES) are critical members of angiogenesis modulating the balance between pro-angiogenenic and anti-angiogenenic factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the circulating level of these factors in serum and explore their prognostic significance in 96 operable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Methods Pre-operational serum VEGF, bFGF, and ES were determined by commercially available enzyme-link immunosorbent assay for 96 NSCLC patients and compared to a cohort of healthy controls (n = 51). Values were correlated with clinicopathological features and overall survival (OS). Results The pretreatment serum levels of VEGF, bFGF and ES in NSCLC were significantly higher than in the healthy control (P < 0.001, P = 0.009 and P = 0.016, respectively). Univariate survival analysis showed that a high bFGF level correlated with shorter OS and remained an independent factor in multivariate analysis (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.918, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.061–3.464). In the squamous subtype, a high bFGF indicated a particularly poor prognosis (HR = 2.609, 95% CI, 1.188–5.729). Conclusions bFGF is an independent predictor of poor survival in patients with NSCLC. For patients with high serum bFGF, aggressive antitumor treatments should be given after surgery. Approaches targeting the bFGF signaling pathway should be considered as potentially promising therapeutic strategies in NSCLC, especially for the squamous subtype.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many tumor markers are analyzed for usefulness in diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new type of tumor biomarker, cytokeratin (CK)-2G2, in serum for the early diagnosis, confirmative diagnosis as well as assessment of treatments of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS Use a chemiluminescent method to examine the serum CK-2G2 levels in 100 patients with non-malignant lung diseases and 100 cases from the healthy population, as well as 124 cases of NSCLC patients prior to chemotherapy, after one course of treatment and after two courses of treatment. RESULTS The average levels of CK-2G2 in the serum of NSCLC patients was found to be significantly higher than that of the group of non-malignant patients as well as the healthy control group (p < 0.01). It was further observed that CK-2G2 is markedly higher in squamous-cell carcinoma than in adenocarcinoma (p < 0.05) whereas CK-2G2 was found to be higher in stages III and IV than stages I and II (p < 0.05) and CK-2G2 is markedly higher in large tumor size (> 3cm) than in small tumor size (< or = 3cm) (p < 0.05). Serum CK-2G2 levels for patients with cancer progression were found to increase after two courses of chemotherapy (p < 0.01) whereas patients with stabilized tumorigenesis or tumor regression showed a significant trend of CK-2G2 decrease (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Detection of the new tumor biomarker CK-2G2 has certain clinical values for early diagnosis, verification of diagnosis as well as classification of patients. Thus it is warranted that CK-2G2 be widely deployed as a new type of cost effective parameter for evaluating efficacy of chemotherapy of NSCLC.

Abstract
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) plays a central role in the regulation of the immune response. HLA class II molecules are essential for T cell-mediated adaptive immunity and present peptide antigens to CD4(+) T cells. Because of its important role in the immune response and its high degree of polymorphism, the HLA system is associated with many diseases. We examined the polymorphisms of HLA-DRB alleles and the sequences of the HLA-DRB promoter region in 97 unrelated patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and in 62 unrelated normal controls of the Han nationality from North China, using PCR with sequence-specific primers and PCR direct sequencing. We found that the frequency of HLA-DRB1*15 was significantly higher in the pulmonary tuberculosis group than in the healthy control group. The P value was 0.001, and the odds ratio was 3.793. The pulmonary tuberculosis group had the same HLA-DRB1 promoter region sequences as the control group. We concluded that the HLA-DRB1*15 allele is associated with pulmonary tuberculosis in the Han nationality from North China. The HLA-DRB1 promoter region sequences had no association with the development of pulmonary tuberculosis.

We identified acaricidal compounds in Inula japonica Thunberg (Asteraceae) that were effective against carmine spider mite, Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval). Petroleum-ether extracts from I. japonica were toxic to T. cinnabarinus, with a 50% lethal concentration (LC50) value of 1.18 mg/ml. Silica gel column chromatography was used to separate the acaricidal components. Seventeen of 38 fraction groups had mite mortality rates >50%, nine fraction groups had rates >60%, and three fraction groups had rates >80% at 2 mg/ml. The major volatile compounds in the bioactive fraction groups were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy, and beta-sitosterol (1), stigmasterol (2), lupeol (3), and alpha-amyrin (4) were identified and determined to have acaricidal activity against T. cinnabarinus in vitro.

Abstract
Previous work demonstrated that methyl palmitate possesses acaricidal activity against Tetranychus viennensis Boisduval (Acari: Tetranychidae) via an unknown mechanism. Here, the symptoms of methyl palmitate toxicity to T. viennensi were studied to determine the acaricidal mechanism of action of this fatty acid methyl ester. Methyl palmitate caused concentration-dependent mortality of T. viennensis, with a moderate concentration (5 mg/ml) eliciting excitement and premature oviposition without spinning shortly after exposure. Tremors of the appendages were subsequently observed, followed by quiescence after approximately 5 h. Mites developed dorsal fluid exosmosis at 15-20 h posttreatment with reduced egg production, followed shortly thereafter by death. Some typical neurotoxic symptoms such as excitement and convulsions were observed in methyl palmitate-exposed mites, suggesting that methyl palmitate may be a neurotoxin. Compared with other neurotoxic acaricides, methyl palmitate poisoning is a slow process in mites. Transmission electron microscopy revealed serious ultrastructural damage in response to 5 mg/ml methyl palmitate exposure. Autolysis of membranous structures was also observed, especially in the mitochondria, suggesting a novel mode of action for methyl palmitate-induced toxicity.

Abstract
Monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) is an important chemokine that has a dose-dependent anti-tumoral effect. Polymorphism in the MCP-1 distal regulatory region (-2518A/G) can affect the level of MCP-1 expression. We examined the polymorphisms of 112 unrelated patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and 82 unrelated healthy controls of Han nationality in North China using PCR-RFLP. We found that the distributions of AA, AG and GG genotypes of MCP-1-2518 were significantly different in NSCLC patients compared to controls (chi(2) = 10.106, P = 0.006). There was a significant increase in the frequency of the AA genotype (odds ratio (OR) = 3.138, chi(2) = 8.905, P = 0.003) and a significant decrease in the frequency of the GG genotype (OR = 0.516, chi(2) = 4.613, P = 0.032) in the NSCLC patients, compared to controls. The frequencies of AA, AG and GG genotypes did not differ in the NSCLC patients according to the number of pack-years smoked. Based on these results, we suggest that the MCP-1 -2518A/G polymorphism is associated with genetic susceptibility to NSCLC.

Abstract
The primary function of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system is to regulate the immune response. Because of its important role in the immune response and its high degree of polymorphism, the HLA system is associated with many diseases. We examined the polymorphisms of HLA-A, B and DRB1 alleles in 100 unrelated patients with lung carcinoma and in 438 unrelated normal controls of Han nationality from North China, using sequence-based typing and PCR with sequence-specific primers. We found that the frequencies of HLA-A*0201, A*2601, B*1518, B*3802, DRB1*0401, DRB1*0402, and DRB1*1201 were higher in the lung carcinoma group than in the normal control group. The P values were 0.035, 0.040, 0.001, 0.017, 0.014, 0.004, and 0.019, respectively, and the odds ratio values were 1.052, 3.513, 4.047, 3.054, 4.237, 19.397, and 2.128, respectively. The frequency of HLA-DRB1*1302 was lower in the lung carcinoma group than in the normal control group (P = 0.046, odds ratio = 0.168). We concluded that patients with lung cancer and healthy controls of Han nationality from North China differ in the frequencies of various HLA alleles.

Abstract
Walnut, Juglans regia L., is known for its insecticidal activities to a range of herbivores and microbes. Isolation and identification of bioactive compounds from walnut is a potential approach for the development of new pesticides. Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the acaricidal activities of green husk extracts of walnut. Bioassay-guided fractionation of petroleum-ether extracts of walnut led to the identification of a common plant-borne fatty acid ester, methyl palmitate (MP), which produced strong acaricidal activity (62.8% mortality) at 1 mg/ml at 24 h. The structure of MP was characterized with infrared spectrum and NMR, and the identification of MP confirmed using an authentic standard on high-performance liquid chromatography. Based on a slide dip bioassay, 10 mg/ml MP provided 97.9% mortality against adults of Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval) (Acari: Tetranychidae), whereas mortality against eggs was much lower (57.2%).

Abstract
Leaf extracts of the walnut, Juglans regia L., were evaluated under laboratory conditions to determine their acaricidal activity on the mites Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval) and Tetranychus viennensis Zacher (Acari: Tetranychidae). Extracts had both contact and systemic toxicity to these mites. The four solvents tested for preparing crude extracts were petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Methanol was the most efficient solvent, with an extraction rate from 17.06 + 0.80 to 20.27 +/- 0.28%. Petroleum ether was the least effective solvent, with extraction rates from 2.30 +/- 0.13 to 2.71 +/- 0.13%. However, the crude extracts with petroleum ether resulted in the highest mite mortality (79.04 +/- 0.52%) in a slide dip bioassay. Mites mortalities from the concentrated extracts prepared by chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol, or distilled water were significantly lower than petroleum ether. The mean lethal concentrations (LC50) of the extracts from petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol, and distilled water to the two mite species were 0.73 +/- 0.04, 1.66 +/- 0.28, 4.96 +/- 0.35, 7.45 +/- 0.67, and 9.91 +/- 0.32 mg/ml, respectively. After liquid chromatography and thin-layer chromatography, the concentrated extracts of petroleum ether were separated into eight fractions and tested for acaricidal activity. Fraction 6 produced significantly higher mite mortality rates than the other groups, killing approximately 90% of both species.

Abstract
Extracts of an annual herbaceous plant, Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad (Macrophomina), were bioassayed to determine their acaricidal activities against Tetranychus urticae Koch, Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval), and Tetranychus viennensis Zacher (Acari: Tetranychidae) in the laboratory. Extracts had both contact and systemic toxicity to these mites. Three solvents were tested for preparing crude extracts: petroleum ether, chloroform, and methanol. Methanol was the most effective solvent, extracting 3.11-4.53% of the acaricide. Petroleum ether was the least effective solvent, extracting 1.25-1.54%. However, extracts with chloroform resulted in the highest mite mortality (78.86%), and ultrasound-assisted extraction required the least time (10 min). Concentrated extracts were prepared using chloroform, methyl acetate, or distilled water as a solvent. Mite mortalities from the concentrated extracts by methyl acetate or distilled water were significantly lower than those by chloroform. The mean lethal concentrations (LC50) of the extracts by chloroform, methyl acetate, and distilled water to the mites were 0.71 +/- 0.06, 2.08 +/- 0.16 and 8.75 +/- 0.062 mg/ml, respectively. After liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography, the concentrated extracts by chloroform were separated into seven groups of isolated fractions and tested for acaricidal activity.

Extracts of a perennial and poisonous weed, Stellera chamaejasme L. (Thymelaeaceae) were bioassayed to determine their acaricidal activities against Tetranychus viennensis Zacher (Acari: Tetranychidae) in the laboratory. Extracts had both contact and systemic toxicity to the mite. After liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography, the extract was further concentrated, separated, and bioassayed. This study is the first to report the acaricidal property of S. chamaejasme and its potential as a botanical pest control agent.
